Описание

Revulsion takes classic Doom and Quake style gameplay and combines it with a loot based shooter. This involves getting better and better weapons and armor as you climb toward the level cap. In addition to that, there is a large amount of potential loot that you can discover to help you along the way. Weapons, armor, and even special abilities that are tied to limited resources. You will have the ability to craft items from blueprints, as well as repairing broken items that you may find throughout the world. You will navigate both hand crafted and randomly generated level design to unravel a series of increasingly more dangerous environments.

Revulsion is a game that is meant to challenge you without being unfair.

Hello, I am TheCastle, and the sole developer on this project. You have very likely played other games I have worked on at some point in the past. A really interesting FPS experience that blends solid gameplay with a neat art style. I'm also positively surprised about the amount of content for the low price.

Remember Paranutical Activity? It feels like PA, but looter shooter. Sadly there are no updates since end of 2020. But in overall the game is good.

I'm so starved for looter shooting and this ones not bad at all

The game might be a bit overtuned in difficulty, causing slower gameplay and corner shooting.
But death seems to be pretty consequence free, everything just respawns, but your stage completion stays, so you will naturally be able to grind more power while you play.

It's a nifty idea to have an open word, missions and a dungeon playstyle open from the get-go.
A lot of weapons to try, and after the first mission I'm kitted out with an electric pistol for armored foes, reload free shotgun for close range, sniper for long range and a grenade launcher if I'm feeling chaotic.

Out of all these "costs less than a burger" games this might make me the most happy.
Honestly if there was weapon or enemy expansions on offer I'd buy them in an instant to support such a simple but does it well game.

          A Quake inspired RPG.

It's fun. The gunplay is solid, the build variety becomes apparent pretty early on, and the soundtrack is good.

All in all, a steal at $3

This is more complex then I was expecting for such a low price, this is a solid indie looter shooter.

This has been quite a welcome surprise. While the UI and menus are janky and rather poorly done - the gunplay, progression, and loot all make up for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not rushing out to my friends demanding they try this out but I do think for the price it is worth it. Even without a discount, it is worth the $10 bucks.

Doom/Quake + Borderlands would be a pretty accurate combo. Gunplay feels very similar to Doom or Quake, while the missions, progression, and loot all remind me of Borderlands or even Hellgate: London (a Diablo-inspired FPS). All of course being styled in voxel-form. Much like Doom, it even has secret areas (with treasures) that can be discovered along the way. This exploration component is something I wish we saw more of. (Shout out to the modern Shadow Warrior for doing a stellar job of this)

One thing that is notably absent from Revulsion is a compelling story, backstory, or even any meaningful lore. There is no narrative or story to speak of. I think if something more had been added, along with better UI and menus, this would have been a far more popular title. The menus and map/mission selection mechanic are all bizarre and puzzling design choices. My hunch is the developer strongly lacked experience in UI/UX design.

Starting off can be pretty challenging. You start off very weak and it can take a while before you populate each gun-slot with an actual weapon. Once you do though, you begin to better understand what strategies can be applied in order to better progress and to better destroy your foes.

$10 feels a bit high, but if you can get it for $7 or under - I'd say get it!

there are many positive aspects about this game.

fun looting, a large variety of loot
the shooting mechanics are pretty damn good for being a pixel game
          fun enemies

one problem causes me to not recommend buying this:
my mouse inputs frequently are not registered by the game. lmb to shoot and rmb to ads do absolutely nothing about 5-10% of the time, which is unacceptable. this causes much frustration during gameplay. i know for a fact this is not a problem on my end. i tried with an old mouse and a brand new gaming mouse, same result, and i don't get this on any other game in my library.

if it wasnt for this flaw, it would be an awesome game.

I've only played 4 hours so far but I'm genuinely enjoying this game. It's hard to describe the gameplay but it's kind of a cross between Dark Souls and old school Boomer Shooters. The hook is that it has a similar weapon upgrade system to the Souls games too so there's some good depth there.
I feel like the only shortcoming to this game is the lack of actual levels but this seems to be something that the developer is aware of and working on with a level editor coming out soon. I also enjoy the barebones aesthetic of everything, it evokes the feel of old Amiga/C64 games (although not everyone may share that sentiment).
Make no mistake, this is not a perfect game. It can get a little repetitive but if all you're looking for is a casual old school, fast paced shooter, this is a worthy purchase (and I would consider it a must-buy if you see it on sale, considering it's only about 6 USD even when it's not)

Kind of a confusing mess where nothing is explained. That said, don't let the graphics fool you because the gunplay is actually top tier. Its all projectile based and everything has power and impact with satisfying dismemberment and rag doll along with a fast character movement speed and a lot of weapons. In massive need of refining and simplification, but I can't not recommend it because at the end of the day it is fun to just blow up some mobs.

I wished i could give Revulsion a neutral review.

On one hand the game gave me my money worth with guns that feel and sound fun to use (except for the railgun which feels and sounds far to weak), enemies that react satisfying to the impacts and a admittedly interesting crafting and upgrade system. The atmosphere is thick and interesting to start with (though i immediately shut of the music, which just helped the ambient track to shine even more).

However, coming the 7th hour of my 10 hour playtime the game became more and more repetitive.

The Areas blend over into one with the same monotone assets being used over and over, The enemies sorely lack variety and the bigger they get the less impacting is their design with some of them becoming rather comical then creepy. The last kick is then delivered when the same base enemies get scaled up and reused. The drab and dower atmosphere constantly stays the same level design wise and makes the player long for a chance in tone, either in some levity or in getting deeper in to the dark areas.

Due to the leveling system, which in itself is not a problem, the game also soon turns into a massive grind forcing the player to play the same areas over and over again. That is okay the first two times but every so often there comes a single barrier that forces the player to grind for resources to upgrade blueprints and then grind resources AGAIN to build the weapons from these blueprints. The costs for the blueprint upgrades and then the weapon crafting soon shoot up exponentially which requires even more grinding of the same areas.

Another problem are the way the enemies animate and react. Every enemy immediately turns towards the player as the player sees them, no matter the distance. And due to their not exactly excellent animation and physics enemies, even massive ones turn on a dime and hurl their projectiles at the player.

This makes the posited run and gun gameplay style not really that feasible either (at least with the solider class) since enemy projectiles are really REALLY fast and if the weapons they use does permit it, hit you near instantly.
This gets even worse every few levels since the player will meet ONE enemy they simply can't survive due to a lack of stats. You can be prepared and tactically strong enough and still there will be one enemy with incredibly fast movement and two hit kill damage, sending the player back to the grind to upgrade and level up the armor and weapons.
There is a so called Endless Dungeon mode which was probably thought to alleviate the problem a little but which in the end runs into the same problems just a little worse.

When i play Revulsion i can TASTE the potential. There is a great game underneath a lack of variety of weapons and monsters.

A bit more polish, more voxel art assets and more use of complimentary contrasting colors and the game could have been a bit more. Most of all it makes me wish i could program and tickle such a game just a little bit further.

Probably the most enjoyable loot and shoot game I've ever played.

For me, this sort of game is made on the basis of its moment-to-moment core game-play loop. For many people, the endless dopamine drip of randomized loot is all it takes to carry a game, but I am not one of those people. This is why I can't stand Borderlands and I like this game a lot (that and the incessant Reddit-tier meme humor, which this game mercifully lacks). This game feels nice to PLAY before you get into the equipment, crafting and loot (of which there is plenty).

Movement and gun-play feels a bit like a cross between Counter-Strike and Quake. Mind you, that is a loose comparison. Unfortunately, no bunny hopping or strafe jumping is possible, as far as I know. You have a movement penalty for weapon accuracy that resets pretty much instantly when you stop moving. This means that it is possible with certain weapons to counter-strafe much like you would in CS, though you still aren't as accurate. You do have good accuracy in the air, which is nice. There are a wide variety of weapons and most of them are enjoyable to use.

Maps generally follow a pretty old-school FPS design philosophy, They are sprawling and complex. You have to collect a set of objective items to unlock to exit from the level. It also features randomized level layouts which are what I would expect from that: a lot of modular stuck together randomly. They very quickly start to feel familiar, but there is enough hand made content that this isn't much of an issue.

There are a wide variety enemies, but nothing particularly unique. Zombies that walk towards you for a melee attack. Fast zombies that do the same. "Heavy" enemies with mini-guns, grenade launchers, and rocket launchers that walk slowly toward you and fire. Soldiers with pistols, machine guns, and shotguns. And so forth. They all work pretty well, though some enemies very easily lose track of you, which is easy to exploit.

The art style, sound design, and music are adequate, but not particularly memorable to me.

Overall, recommended for people who like more old school FPS mechanics and wouldn't mind some loot management and crafting on top of that.

this here is the real deal... old school FPS action, Souls-like progression, loot/crafting that would fit right at home with modern "AAA" games.

to be honest i bought this on a whim with my trigger finger ready on the refund button... voxel graphics, zombies, low rent production... i've been burned on this type of thing so many times before. but this is one instance where the game lived up to the pitch. hats off to the creator. an amazing game here

caveat is it takes about an hour to get into the groove of things. most mechanics aren't spelled out - which is good in a way, no annoying tutorial overlays disrupting you - but it takes some time figuring things out if you try and play it like doom, quake, ect off the bat

but anyway great game. up there with all the new shooters like Dusk and Amid Evil

          IN SUMMARY:

At last, a game with voxel graphics that's NOT a minecraft ripoff! This 3d FPS shooter is heavily inspired from Doom/Quake, with a few RPG and crafting elements from Diablo. You can craft weapons from specific blueprints, and there are player and item levels, but it's not Borderlands.

You go through levels, shoot enemies, get power crystals and move on to the next level. The main campaign is not randomized, but there is an endless dungeon mode with randomized enemies and levels. The only real changeup is that it uses the Dark Souls mechanic of dropping money on death, and enemies respawning when you use a fast travel point.

As befitting of a game inspired by Doom and Quake, the shotgun is fantastic and there are several varieties including a double barrel. Also a fully automatic 30-round shotty.

Overall, it's a fun, competently constructed shooter that doesn't really reinvent the wheel, but doesn't waste your time. An Easy Mode is available for those who need it, and there are in-game "advancements" with rewards but no Steam Achievements.

          IN MORE DETAIL:

The gameplay is as simple as simple gets - you have guns, you mouse over the hordes of the damned, left click as necessary to remove hordes of the damned. Naturally, they shoot back, but that's only fair. Enemies range from unarmed zombies to gigantic Beholder things that shoot gouts of flames at you. Despite the intimidation factor from hell demons and such, I'd say the humble zombies with guns are actually quite deadly since bullets travel faster than fireballs. The minigun zombies especially require quick feet and a solid object to hide behind. You can retreat to a safehouse if need be through fast travel nodes. Just using a fast travel node heals, reloads and recharges your Action Points (mana), but also respawns enemies.

There are RPG elements - you have levels, items have levels and can come in a variety of rarities, and enemies can drop loot, usually cash and crafting ingredients. Sometimes they drop broken weapons which can't be used unless you go to your safehouse and fix them for a usually reasonable sum of mats and money. There is an inventory limit which can be boosted with enhanced armor, but I have rarely hit the inventory limit from loot. Note that this isn't borderlands - There is a broad but finite number of weapon types, and their stats depend on level and rarity. The guns aren't procedural. If you like a weapon you can upgrade it at your safehouse to match your level and keep it useful. You can break down weapons/equipment you don't like for mats or sell them for a few bucks. You can also enhance armor with a selection of bonuses from "Extra carrying capacity" to "run faster".

The biggest difference between this and older FPS games is the ammo limitation. Ammo is actually quite sparse and so noteworthy it's pointed out on your automap. Picking up ammo restores ammo for all your weapons and you are encouraged to fill up your loadout ASAP so that you don't run out of options in a tight spot. You can craft, buy, or loot Ammo Boxes which increase your ammo for a type, but they have the heaviest weight of any item so you can't just cram an infinite amount of ammo boxes in your pockets. Besides guns, there's a pickaxe for a melee weapon you can put in your heavy weapon slot, but by default you have a knife which does an impressive amount of damage and levels up with you. It can hit multiple enemies or multi-hit a large enemy in front of you.

Healing and Specials are two categories of item that require Action Points as mentioned before. You can find a variety of healing items but they aren't consumables, they're pieces of equipment that heal on use and have a cool down, requiring a significant amount of AP. Specials function similarly to healing equipment, but do things like "Increase damage for 20 seconds" or "Perfect Accuracy for a limited time". These replace the consumables you'd find laying around in Doom/Quake.

A note on the RPG elements - your leveling up just adds health, damage, and AP. There aren't stat points or character builds, it just means you can take on tougher areas. The level cap is 25 and you can tear through it fast with some luck. The closest thing to character builds is the initial character selection - you choose from 3 archetypes : Scout, fast but Fragile and based on the classic 90s FPS characters. Soldier, the Mario all-arounder. Finally there's the Enforcer, based of off modern FPS heros who is slow but tough.

The main game is a straight up classic campaign - nonrandomized levels, secrets, collectibles you have to go back with later upgrades to get them - all that old school stuff. Your mission in most levels is simply to get the Power Crystals, which serve as keycards and progress markers. Get them all, and you can move on to the next level. You leave levels through a door, and can retreat through the Fast Travel nodes at any point, provided you can get there. You also respawn at the last Fast Travel Node used if you die, with a marker on your hud where you died.

I like this game and really appreciate the mix of old and new game design elements. Strongly recommended.

          So far so good !
I only played six hours and enjoyed every minutes of it.

Revulsion is surprisingly fun and challenging, to sum it up fast i'd say it's a great indie doom/ rpg/ rogue like.
The gameplay is great, graphics are nice, the rpg elements are well implemented, with lots of body parts, skills you can upgrade.
There's a good ammount of weapons, every weapons i acquired so far felt really good and sick to use (you can also upgrade them).

Some levels are pretty huge and high tier ennemies can be really tough to defeat.
You will have to progress carefully, be patient and precise if you don't want to die repeatedly.
Like some rogue likes if you die you lose some gear but you can recover it by looting your own stuff.

The only things the game might be lacking imo is a true story, a better ui (in game ui is basic but at least works correctly), more ambient music would have also be nice.

Just like Project Warlock it's unbelievable the game was made by only one person.
          Well done TheCastle.
          Highly recommanded !

Amazing. I'm just 4 hours in but I've had a great experience.

It's like playing Diablo 2...but FPS with guns.

          1) Monsters aren't horrible bullet sponges that never die, but are still very challenging.
          2) Items are more in-depth than what you may think. Armors have affixes/different boosts.
          3) Huge range of different gun types which is a MASSIVE plus for an FPS ARPG.
          4) Fun level design
          5) COOL music!!! Action sequences have awesome guitar rifts and rhythms.
          6) Just like an ARPG, play any level you want repeatedly to farm. However, the game isn't grindy.

So far the only caveat I would say is the initial conditioning to the graphics style, not a big deal. You get used to it.

Revulsion is a blocky homage to old school shooters like Doom, where the story is "Here's a gun, go kill things", and the levels are big and easy to navigate. The environments are bright, the style is fun, and the sound effects really pop from the speakers to let you know what's going on.

I played this game when it was very early Alpha and absolutely LOVED it. Then, everything changed because the dev thought it was too easy. The difficulty became brutal, and the gameplay became hugely unbalanced and very repetitive. The novel unusual levels of the early alpha became warrens of grey metal, and I stopped playing it for almost two years. I came back to it periodically, would start a new game, but always ended up battering my head off an unkillable baddie, and left it again.

... Then I saw that the game had changed again, so I tried it... And this time I found that the design had completely changed once again, back to a little more like what it was at first. The levels had been restructured, the progression was far more balanced and the boss fights / zombie rushes were far more manageable and suited the player level WAY better.

I've just played through the first three levels in the new format, and I found the game FAR more approachable. Some of the Dark Souls elements have been toned down, and the enemy difficulties have been nicely balanced. The levels, while still a little samey in places, are now simpler and have nice clear paths through them, so you don't need to have a photographic memory to work your way through.

The crafting system is still a bit borked IMHO.. The costs for things are a little skewed, which leads to huge rewards for things due to the points inflation... But it's not horrible...

All in all, this is a really well crafted game now, and feels really good to play. You should definitely get this and plough through. The UI is still a little amateurish, but don't let that get in the way of a really good, satisfying shooter in the same vein as DooM.

I'm loving this game. It's a perfect blend of Action RPG and first person shooters (as the description says, Dark Souls meets Doom). The gameplay is highly addictive and rewarding for overcoming challenges, so take your time.

There are a few bugs and performance dips but those certainly will be ironed out.

After only a few levels I knew i was in love with this game. The level of difficulty and feel of gunplay are pitch perfect in my opinion, It runs like a dream on max settings, and the deep roguelike systems are addictive as hell. While the somewhat basic visual design was a point of hesitation when looking at the promotional media, in game it is both charming and a great fit for the style of play. The modular look of the game fills me with hopes that in the future a level editor will usher in endless levels of content considering I already know my thirst for this game will be endless. This game should fully satisfy both action-roguelike and classic shooter fans in equal measure.

Here's a list of a few features that stood out while playing.

Fun and detailed ragdoll effects with dismemberment.
A classic system of accuracy simulation as seen in the original Deus Ex and Rainbow 6 made more action friendly.
Tons of loot, with a full diabloesque inventory.
          Destructable environments.
Hit location based damage and effect. Hit them in the head for more damage and a chance to stun.
