Borderlands Collection: Pandora's Box

This title is included in Borderlands Collection: Pandora's Box!

About the Game

A new era of shoot and loot is about to begin. Play as one of four new vault hunters facing off against a massive new world of creatures, psychos and the evil mastermind, Handsome Jack. Make new friends, arm them with a bazillion weapons and fight alongside them in 4 player co-op on a relentless quest for revenge and redemption across the undiscovered and unpredictable living planet.

Key Features:

  • All-New Characters and All-New Classes: Four all new playable classes including the Siren, the Commando, the Gunzerker and the Assassin. Step into the role of the Gunzerker, whose highly deadly skills allow him to dual-wield any two weapons found in the game. Not only that, you will build on that skill to do more things with two guns than you ever imagined possible. Dual machine guns? Cool. Dual rocket launchers? Of course! Dual Sniper Rifles? Sure, if that’s your thing! Want to try other styles? More tactical perhaps? There are multiple classes to choose from!

  • Dynamic Co-op online, and LAN: Share your adventures with friends both online and via LAN. Borderlands 2 features a seamless system enabling you to drop in and drop out of a campaign without ever having to restart the game. On top of that you can even take your new gear from any game to any other!

  • World Connected Story: Find yourself left for dead in the frozen tundra of Pandora as you begin your quest of revenge and redemption. Expose the evil surrounding the Hyperion Corporation and take on the perpetrator of a universe-wide grand deception -- the nefarious Hyperion CEO, Handsome Jack. (Oh, also: he's stolen credit for the opening of the Vault.)

  • 87 Bazillion...Everything: In addition to the new gun system, you will lust after procedurally generated shields, grenades, Relics, class mods and much, much more. And you thought the original Borderlands had a ton of loot!

  • Brand new environments on Pandora: Hunt through entirely brand new areas of Pandora that are more alive than ever! From the arctic tundra, through the dangerous grasslands, past the mysterious corrosive caverns to beyond, you’ll be surprised by the unpredictable world of Pandora at every turn!

  • Brand new enemies: A whole slew of new enemies are out there to kill you in Borderlands 2. Hulking, gorilla-like Bullymongs, vicious predatory Stalkers and the Hyperion mechanical army, run by Handsome Jack, are just some of the new enemies in Borderlands 2.

Probably my favourite borderlands. The writing hadn't gotten stale and the guns were fun. I found its lifetime significantly lower than other folks, though. After finishing it I kind of lost interest fast. Part of it was that I found assault rifles the least fun guns to use.

Drops a star for slight mapping errors in the environment (like floaty cogs, and badly optimised environment features - often you feel you should be able to jump somewhere and it's just invisibly blocked off).

A good all round game, if a little disappointing after the changing to The Sanctuary for the first time where you end up pacing around long distances on foot. You see they've graduated away from walking after first area, as the mechanics would otherwise be repetitive, as is often the case in open-world games. The shift could have been done better, and the feeling is that there's a repetitive nature in the open-world areas.

Going down into the indoor areas the game excels at blasting off the player's frustration in tight firefights but then slightly slackens off as it is unsure if it wants to let the player out again or do something half way. The transitional sequences in combat also excel but then have blips where the continuity fizzles out but it's not completely problematic as the firefights are fun - but it does break your concentration and you feel re-spawning in this game is largely not your fault.

Overall, very atmospheric game. Still holds its own after over 10 years (I don't know what that says about modern games). It brings some classic elements from old games like the Quake grunting sound when jumping, or the inspiration for the weapons, to the open world interaction like Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Sure, there's a big feel of Fallout 2 but then that was a mix of other inspirations anyway, and has a different 'feel' and this is more polished and contemporary.

It makes you think what can be done with older graphics capability, the fact that it's thoroughly fun despite being older than other games, that don't play anywhere near 62 frames per second, as this consistently can do. The installation file isn't too big either, for the amount of gameplay, and in any case it's under 11 gigs. Duke Nukem is another that shines years after its release, for doing the most with the hardware, so it's like that. Perhaps it's a time where more focus was spent on optimising existing technology rather than nowadays where there is a growing disparity between high end ultra-customisations and lower end performance. Back then, you could play a game at 300 FPS if your system would let you, but it would still look the same (and you could play most of next year's titles comfortably). I think this is going to be a topic for debate, particularly with the high sale price of modern games, and the industry-wide conversion of graphics chips to other non-graphics uses.

Best borderlands imo. Was also my first impression. The gameplay was unique and very fun. The story and dialog had a mix of humor and weight at different moments.

The art has an identity on its own. Even after years since release, it’s still a fun game to play through.

Freaking fun, and I love the humour and how most the time they don't take names or a whole lot of stuff seriously, the story is great, the character design is great, the gameplay is amazing with hundreds of guns that do awesome stuff, stop reading reviews just buy it, trust me this game is awesome.

I still think Borderlands 2 is the single greatest video game ever made. It has so much humor and is such a solid story with great characters. I have played for MANY years. First on Playstation and now on PC. I just never seem to bore of this game.

A review for people into single player story and character based games:

Graphics/Art Direction:
- The graphics look quite nice, even many years later, due to the cell shading and excellent world and character design. The first game had a very generic look to it, but his game has varied locales, breathtaking background scenery, vibrant colors, wild and fun enemy design, and is overall visually a pleasure to play. While the art direction is a bit over the top at times, if you take in context of the world they are building, I think it is done quite well.

Gameplay/Game Mechanics:
- I'm not really a first person or shooter fan, but the gameplay is fast paced with exciting boss fights that are both challenging and rewarding, a fun albeit basic looter feedback mechanic, and each primary character feels different with different specializations, powers, and strengths versus weaknesses. Most of the time you are toting your weapon of choice and blasting through enemies, but there is a tactical nature to it as well. Do you want to snipe from far away or go close quarters with a shotgun. Do you want to focus on critical hit versus status effects like burning or electricity. Do you want to maximize the damage, fire rate, etc. It creates a varied approach that lets you tackle most situations at your own pace.

The boss fights can be a lot more difficult if your playstyle does not support close quarters though, as you generally get overwhelmed with a bunch of minions and the bosses will shred your shield very quickly resulting in being highly vulnerable. I honestly died a lot trying to tackle content that was higher level than me, or that I was under geared or had the wrong tactical approach to, which was sometimes a source of frustration. Keep in mind I completed the full game and DLC completely solo, however, and many people recommend partying with others.

My biggest gripe was how you need to be a few levels higher to play content solo without the frustration of dying really easy, but there are a lot of quests which will easily keep levels moving smoothly, so if you are completing most of the content it is reasonable and doesn't feel like grinding in the traditional sense. My other main complaint is that the gear you find is generally pretty lame. When I did find epic/legendary loot, it was usually under leveled or a type of weapon I either did not specialize well in with my default character skills or something that did not meet my play style: say a pistol when I'm a sniper for example. I wish loot would have been less stingy and that there was more flexibility with weapons, as there really are a couple of weapons that tend to consistently be more viable/useful than others.

Story/Character:
- This game was a huge step up over the first game, featuring flushed out and interesting characters that stick with you and are fun to listen to in dialogue. Even the fetch quest/kill x enemies side quests were interesting and fun to complete due to the witty writing and wanting to know more about the characters. Some characters did fall flat/I found less appealing: Torgue for example. Regardless of your personal investment in the over-arching narrative or characters, I think the scenarios and characters were well written, and the narrative payoff was pretty great. I really liked Jack as the main antagonist: really well voiced and interesting character.
- One thing I feel could have been done better is your chosen character's involvement in the narrative and cut-scenes. While not a silent protagonist by any means, most of the dialogue you contribute are witty lines here an there throughout the game versus the compelling characters you meet that actually drive the story. This game would be epic if you could have companions like many RPG staples, but the focus is on co-op, and for this reason, it sometimes felt a bit barren and less interesting exploring environments while moving to the next set piece. I loved the holotapes though. They take a bit of effort to find but are fun to listen to and make exploration more interesting than just searching for things to shoot and chest to open.
- One thing I absolutely hated was how loud everything is. The soundmixing is pretty bad. I don't mind the one liner threats from enemies, but it is a non-stop barrage from every enemy, combined with screaming midgets, DoT causes enemies to scream incredibly loud to the point it hurts your ears, your characters makes loud breathing noises constantly, and the cacophony of sounds tends to happen at the most inopportune time, in the middle of trying to listen to critical dialogue and storytelling for example, to the point that I nearly stopped playing in frustration. Why create a compelling narrative and characters, witty dialogue, or hire fantastic voice actors and writers to create a compelling narrative at all, if you plan to drown it out with generic grunting and ear piercing blood curdling screaming sounds that completely drown it out? And there were no sound settings to address this issue as these were all inclusive to the voice setting, so turning it down also turned down the story dialogue. This was by far the most infuriating aspect of the game. While I still really enjoyed my experience, I feel I missed a lot of content because of it.

For the record: I played this on PS5 before getting a PC but felt compelled to leave my review on Steam since I have switched to PC.

Score: 7.5

Pros:
- Fund story and characters
- Witty and excellent dialogue and writing if you suspend disbelief and accept a goofy yet sometimes serious world and setting
- Generally engaging gameplay and varied and interesting boss fights

Cons:
- Loot is not very rewarding and often does not match your build or character skills
- Areas feel a bit barren and uninteresting to explore between story beats: I'm sure this would be better in co-op
- Your main character feels less compelling and interesting than the supporting cast

God awful:
- Sound mixing
- Inability to clearly hear important story dialogue due to screaming enemies and generic call-outs, threats, and player character grunting

pros:
- really fun gunplay and mechanics
- one of the best co-op shooters i have played so far
- long and interesting campaign with tons of side quests
- funny jokes and satire throughout
- cool af art style
cons:
- acting is quite bad at some times
- characters are just ok and it is hard to properly sympathize with them (some of them do have their charms but the rest are blandly written)
- no option to skip cutscenes which gets annoying especially on second playthroughs

It does everything the first does, but better. Its gunplay ranges from decent to good, and is a blast with friends. I still have some gripes though.

Level 1-10 takes about 2.5 hours and is basically a forced tutorial. your first 5 levels give you no skill points, for some reason. Having your car blow up in the middle of a huge map and having to walk back to the carpool is always an annoying slog. The game thinks it has much more charisma than it does, and about half the comedy hasn't aged well. It has a habit of coming up with a funny idea, and then beating it to death by overusing it.

I feel like the XP gain is about half as much as it needs to feel right, in other Shooter-looter or diablo-like games what keeps me moving forward is the anticipation of the next level up and what I'll do with it. In this I always felt annoyed that I hadn't done enough yet to modify my character.

I don't get why people enjoy these games so much. They are designed with nothing but maximum frustration and tedium with very little in the way of redeeming qualities.

It just makes you want to play a game with those qualities without all the trash design around it, which just makes you angry that game doesn't exist.

This is more of a middle thumb. The gunplay is solid, there are lots of cool weapons. I love the physics on the cloth, how you can shoot holes in it and tear off pieces. More games should do that.
Overall though Borderlands 1 is way better. The first game was bleak, serious and dreary with subtle splats of humor here and there. #2 took the humor overboard and cranked it up 1000%. 90% of the time to cringe or teenaged annoying levels. I cant stand to continue anymore. The only thing that kept me going is the solid gunplay and juicy loot.
I even checked out the DLCs (even though I havent beat the main game) just to see if they were cool or not. NOPE. Literally 2 of the DLCs are childrens stories. The one is actually just one of the most annoying characters playing dungeons and dragons. I cant imagine how awful the pre sequel and 3 are. Just seeing the trailer for the pre sequel makes me vomit.
Back to one I go and will remain for all time.

If you expect a looter shooter and nothing else I recommend this and I think that's what the game is supposed to do/be and in this way and mindset it's enjoyable.
It's nothing life changing and it's oldish, so I recommend getting it when it's sale.

What I really don't like is the characters and dialogues, the game is aimed at adults due to language and violence but the way characters behave and talk is mostly the behaviour and humour of school children in the middle of their puberty. We had this in BL1 but less so and in BL2 it got by far too much for my taste, I found it to be more and more annoying to listen to loud childish characters which also offer no relevant information or good story telling, so if you are like me, I recommend turning off voice sound volume and just loot and shoot.
An additional reason for turning off voice is that regularly different dialogues play at the same time both at full volume which is super annoying it's like standing between two people both yelling at you.
The only more or less interesting and adult character is Angel imo but even she does this "uh oh I/they said something bad", I'm surprised that she didn't giggle like a 13 years old as well.

Also it's a lot of mindless boring travelling, you gotta quit and reload a lot because it's faster than travelling even with a vehicle in many many cases: Finish a mission -> quit and reload -> use fast travel -> turn in mission.

So, if you want something that has at least an interesting story and/or conversations then this is not a game for you, it's a "turn your mind off and shoot things" game.
I would even go as far as saying like 80% the work they put in for conversations and voicing them was a waste of time and money, the game gains nothing from them.

Literally my favorite game, and I can't play it because gearbox reached in and broke everything. I can't get past the launcher! I'll open it up, and then it crashes a second later. Did all the trouble-shooting, messed with files, verified everything with steam, turned off my firewall for a minute, I did everything and it still won't work. It was fine before, it was great before, and they reached in and made it so the 60 bucks I spent is just down the drain, because I no longer have money or a game to play. Great game, 10/10, but unplayable now.

The game gets grindy in spots but is a very good experience. They basically built on everything that the first game did and pretty much all aspects end up about 20% better. MMO-esque side quest design gets old, but I'm glad they saved the grindier content for optional stuff. Some enemies wind up being huge bullet sponges, though I don't mind it too much since the mechanics are satisfying enough for me to stay engaged. The biggest draws for me were definitely the environment design and combat gameplay. I'm pleasantly surprised with the story given the game's reputation for obnoxious writing - it's nothing groundbreaking, but the plot is very clearly a step up from the first game and I actually cared a lot more about the characters. Definitely worth playing if you like the visuals and don't get much combat fatigue.

This game is pretty damn fun! Note: It's not exactly made for singleplayer. The game has been kicking my ass all on my own. At some point you have to realize strategy and careful manuveuring is more powerful than the measly firepower you're so proud of.
The story is entertaining, unorthodox weapons are plentiful. Really it feels like all the developers wanted was to make this fun, and they succeeded.

Borderlands 2 is a masterpiece of chaotic fun, blending hilarious writing, explosive gameplay, and an unforgettable cast of characters into one of the most entertaining games ever made. It’s the pinnacle of the Borderlands franchise, and a must-play for anyone who loves shooters, RPGs, or just having a blast with friends.

The gameplay is fast-paced, dynamic, and endlessly satisfying. With a massive arsenal of guns—each more absurd than the last—and a variety of character classes to choose from, no two playthroughs feel the same. The mix of skill trees and loot systems encourages experimentation, allowing you to build your Vault Hunter in a way that perfectly suits your playstyle. Whether you’re mowing down enemies with a chaingun or freezing them with a cryo grenade, combat is consistently engaging and ridiculously fun.

The story and writing are where Borderlands 2 truly shines. Handsome Jack is one of gaming’s most iconic villains, with his sharp wit and relentless taunts making him both infuriating and hilarious. The quests are filled with clever humor, pop culture references, and unexpected twists, keeping you invested in the narrative from start to finish. Even the side missions are packed with personality, turning what could’ve been mundane tasks into memorable adventures.

The world of Pandora is vibrant and diverse, with a mix of sprawling deserts, lush highlands, and industrial wastelands. The art style is bold and unique, giving the game a distinct personality that stands out from other shooters. The soundtrack complements the chaotic action perfectly, and the voice acting is stellar across the board.

On top of all that, Borderlands 2 excels in co-op. Playing with friends makes the already amazing experience even better, as you strategize (or argue) over loot and tackle increasingly insane challenges together. The DLCs, like Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, add even more value, with creative new content that extends the game’s already impressive replayability.

Simply put, Borderlands 2 is a masterclass in fun. It’s a game that doesn’t just embrace chaos—it celebrates it, and you’ll love every second of it.

Rating: 10/10 – A looter-shooter masterpiece. Handsome Jack approves (probably not).

Borderlands 2 is a blast to play, combining humour, action, and a fun story into one awesome package. This first-person shooter with RPG elements from Gearbox Software improves on the original in all the best ways.

The real magic happens in co-op mode. While playing solo is fine, teaming up with friends takes the game to a whole new level. Up to four players can join forces, mixing character abilities to handle tough fights and crazy situations. Each class—like the stealthy Assassin or the tanky Gunzerker—brings something unique, and working together makes every battle feel exciting. A Siren’s crowd control paired with a Commando’s turret is just one example of the fun combos you can try.

Co-op also ramps up the challenge, with tougher enemies and more loot to share (or fight over). Finding legendary gear is even better when you’ve got friends to celebrate—or argue—with.

The game’s world, Pandora, is packed with over-the-top characters, hilarious writing, and a villain you’ll love to hate: Handsome Jack. The cel-shaded graphics still look amazing, giving the game a style all its own.

With multiple character classes, loads of side quests, and endgame content like raid bosses and DLC, there’s tons to keep you coming back. Whether it’s your first playthrough or your fifth, the mix of humour, action, and loot never gets old, especially in co-op.

In short, Borderlands 2 is a must-play. It’s fun solo but incredible with friends, making it one of the best co-op games out there.

Such a fun and colourful game, that game physics and control is mostly good, really good for a game from 2012. Some issues in co-op with loot, and causing some issues, but nothing bad enough to ruin the fun of the game, and all stuff fixed in BL3! Highly recommend if ya want some low brain power fun!

This game is just worst if you trying to complete it in a single player. It simply doesn't work in single player at all. I played in it 10 years ago with friends, but have not finished, wanted to check it and finish the plot. As a result I just hate it, plot is okay, but if you are not going to bring your friends with you, avoid this game.
I played mechanic girl that can summon bot, Deathtrap.
Gameplay is not thought through:
- Just by playing the game you will end up not havnig enough level to beat monsters or bosses from time to time. So, welcome grind, and side quests only for purpose of getting level.
- Amount of monsters sometimes is just overwhelming, and you end up having fire from all directions. It is okay for multiplayer, but for singleplayer it is hard to control such amount. Especially this is a problem on bosses, you need to focus boss, but there are almost endless minions. Reminds MMO.
- If you respawn or distance from location for long enough time, mosters might respawn, but the loot is not. On a boss you can easily end up having 0 ammo on couple of most useful weapons.
- Monsters that disappear after taking couple of hits, so you can't have focused fire on them and have to always switch targets. It is okay to have a couple of them to distract player, but having 5-10 of them at the same time...
- Monster that one-shot your character. Okay with multiplayer, you can revive each other. But in single player, this is just terrible design. There are also similar suiciders, they are annoying, but I guess it is okay,
- Monsters can respawn in you. There are designated locations of monsters spawn. They spawn in waves, so if you moved though the location while killing monsters, easily can have second wave respawning right in you.
- World is empty, you have not motivation to explore it, because everything you will find there or kill will respawn at some point. As a result no unique events, world is boring outside of the main quests. You have no motivation to complete side quests besides for the grinding purposes.
- Most of the bosses I killed so far has no singleplayer strategy. They don't have phases, very few of them have attack timings, especially considering that there minions. If you avoid being damaged you are not dealing damage, at the same time if you are dealing damage, you will be damaged.
- Contructor bots: this is the quintessence of the game. They have endless missle barrage, which they just spam almost without any cooldown. If you take cover, it might decide to spawn something else: bots, healers or even nuclear bomb. Killing it in team would be fun, but it is completely not working for the single player, just annoying and takes a lot of time.
- Damage elements: would be nice, if there would not be elemental monsters. Which are immune to one or more elements. So, either carrying all kinds of elements for your weapon of choice, or you just carry weapon that does huge amount of damage. In the end I completed game with a pistol of level 22 (game ends on 30), that shots multiple projectiles at the same time, dealing huge damage. More than any weapon I had on level 30, only rocket launcher had more damage, but amount of shots is incomparably less than for the pistol.
- Weird invincibility frames for enemies. Sometimes during enemy animation they get zero damage, even projectiles fly through. I used shotgun with 15 projectiles, first shot deals 60% damage, some animation starts, I deal 0 damage, though enemy doesn't move. To be honest, looks like a bug.
- By the end of the game almost any enemy became possible to one-shot me if it has the same of higher level. Considering that there are multiple of them, it happens almost always. Only because of the second chance I have not dropped the game. Usual fight looks like this: hide in cover, shoot from time to time, get sorrounded, take couple of hits, die, kill nearest enemy, repeat.
- Experience for low level monsters. For some reason even couple levels lower monsters give you close to zero XP. Though they can kill without a problem. This also works agains the game, because you level up quickly and completing most of the side quests is pointless. I had multiple 26 level quests, but didn't even try to complete them after getting level 29, no more experience from monsters, and quest is only a small fraction of your XP income.
- Tons of backtracking. It feels like all side quests lead to the same 4-5 locations. At the same time I never visited anything else.
- Poor level design. It is almost impossible to udnerstand where do you need to go. I don't even know how many times I went where I thought I should only to end up in the completely different direction. Even died couple of times, because was not able to see end of the map in the fog of war. Besides killswitch there, those locations looked completely normal. Also there are location with multiple levels one above each other, you can't get any idea from the map where do you need to go. No logic, no map legend or topology, in one place you see no obstruction on the map, but there is wall, in other it says that there is a wall, but you can pass. Besides that, high constructions work against the player, allowing all flying monsters and some walking to clip through, making them a very hard target. You can't see where are they coming from. And they just clip through the wall in random place, make couple of shoots and disappear in another wall. Was saved here by Deathtrap, it follows the same logic, so they fight against each other somewhere in walls.
- Back then we dropped this game because became bored. We played one session fully, several chapters, but had no motivation to continue next time. Just found another game that was more fun.

Pluses of the game:
- It has good style. Characters are unique, they have interesting features. But because the world is dead, this is working only as a first impression.
- It definetely works as a Coop game. All the poor mechanics would be forgiven for the coop feature. We played a lot of games only because they had coop features, even though they are boring or even broken besides that. Yes, making mechanics that would work for both play styles is complicated, but would improve game significantly.

I think if this game would be similar to Helldivers, it would be much more interesting. Farming quests in separate sessions, with strangers or friends, against hordes of monsters. Would be nice. This game mechanics are more close to session games than to plot oriented games.

A well known Franchise....
This game is something that almost everyone has played or if not has had heard about it and had loved ones or friends play this while you watch them as they unfold the great story that fall before you or them. You are playing as a "Vault Hunter" on searching on the great quest of life and adventure. With the great companion of "Clap Trap" where he helps you in his, special, way with many puns and funny corny comments as you make your way through the story. This game has a franchise that is almost hoping for itself to create more and extraordinary story, that is different than the path that it has already laid out for itself before hand. The game when it first came out was a turning point on how people played looter shooter with the story missions in it to get the next highest piece of gear that was in the game, grinding for an extraordinary amount of hours to complete the mission or get the bosses equipment to get his gear that he has to make the other enemies easier to defeat and to play with your friends, in the feature that this game has in it.

In my opinion, this game is something of a pinnacle when it first came out and is still around and is played by hundreds to this day, however due to the emence shelf life that this game has. I highly recommend this game on super sale or a bundle deal l for the games that I have seen on here before. I have seen these games go for free as well.

When you’ve managed to create an unexpectedly great first entry for a franchise, it begs the question: What the hell do you do with the sequel? In the case of Borderlands 2 developer Gearbox has decided to largely stick with what worked the first time around, while implementing a host of tweaks that make it an overall superior game. A few relatively minor complaints aside, Borderlands 2 improves not only the narrative, but almost every major game system. If you’ve been itching for a reason to jump back into the world of Pandora, Borderlands 2 provides a more than ample supply. The hook of Borderlands 2, the very reason that I found myself thinking about it when I worked or tried to fall asleep, is the loot. Guns, ammo, character skins, grenade mods, class mods -- there’s always something just a bit better, something you so desperately didn’t even know you needed until you found it in Borderlands 2. Just like Diablo or a number of other action RPGs, the hunt for loot becomes intoxicating because of the tiny rush you get each time a rare colored item spills out of a chest or is dropped by a recently slain enemy. Every firefight and intense boss battle becomes all the more rewarding, because, though you might die a few times and want to crush something near you in real life, it suddenly feels like everything is going to be OK when you’re blasting away enemies with a newly looted gun.

Wow. Just wow. Borderlands 2 delivers, perfecting on Borderlands 1 in most ways. The devs polished up the bad parts of BL1 and made the good parts stellar. Borderlands 2, like The Empire Strikes Back, proves it worth as a sequel that is superior to its predecessor.

My recommendation for first time Borderlands players: don't skip Borderlands 1. Even though BL2 is better, the payoff is much more when you play 1 and then go to 2.

Recommendations for Specific Gamers

Good Villain Enjoyers

I came into BL2 hearing a LOT about Handsome Jack. And I'm pleased to say he lives up to his hype. Jack is an evil, cruel, egotistical and insufferable despot of Pandora. Those qualities should make him a stock two dimensional villain. But Jack is far from that. Handsome Jack is a great video game villain in ways that few make you feel.

You love to hate Jack, you rage everytime he foils you, and then you rage some more when he kills off characters you care about. Every inch you gain against Handsome Jack feels good. And, when you finally beat him in the end, you relish that sweet victory deep, deep inside you.

No joke: I killed Handsome Jack over and over in the final bossfight. I did it with every character class. Everytime I did so, it felt good. Ending Jack is more satisfying from a character perspective than a gameplay one . Very few endgame bossfights made me feel that.

Good Villain Enjoyers Part II

A thing I realized about Jack is that I never found him funny unlike most Borderlands villains. You can hate him, you can admire his cunning but you can't laugh about Jack's villanous antics. Why is that?

Borderlands is a fun and breezy game despite being set in a violent post-apocalyptic world. Because of the art style, the wacky cast of characters, the morbid humor, you find yourself laughing along and generally not minding the dark side of Pandora. Jack yanks you out of that frame of mind. That is how great of a villain he is.

One moment you are having fun, looting and shooting bad guys. And then you come across a horrific audio log about Jack's deeds. You realize how many people's lives, including those of the characters you love, he messed up. The Borderlands writers deliver punchline after punchline to laugh about. And Jack delivers the gut punch right after, reminding you what an evil bastar d he is. On the fun and fun planet of Pandora, Jack alone holds court in embodying its ugliest and darkest parts. He alone does the heavy lifting of reminding the player how brutal a post-apocalyptic world is. And this, again, is why I believe Handsome Jack is among the greatest villains in videogame history.

100+hours Gamers

Like getting lost in games that are 100+ hours long? BL2 has got your back! The full version of the game feels like it has endless content. Even just looking at the main game itself, there is so much to do. The Vault Hunter playstyles are unique and a thrill to make builds out of. Every map in BL2 has little secrets to find out or different characters to interact with. The downside to this is the grind and the monotony that eventually sets in. More on that later.

DLC Enjoyers

Borderlands 2 probably has the most (story) DLCs for a game I have played so far. The last DLC, Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary, was released in 2019! Think about it: that's seven years AFTER the main game was released! Oh, and even putting aside the big story DLCs, there are DLCs based on special occasions: V-Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween etc.

Most of the DLCs are meh and forgettable IMO. The ones worth playing are the Tiny Tina and Commander Lillth DLC. These two are standalone games which provide maximum fun and fan love if you are a Borderlands fan.

Fetch Quest & Grind Haters

I'd mentioned that Borderlands 2 has a lot of stuff to do. But here's the downside to that: too many generic fetch quests. X character asks you to kill bad guys and/or retrieve items. This format goes on ad nauseam. At some point the monotony sets in doing the same thing. I had to set down the game at one point because of this.

Related point: the grind in this game is awful. There are a few reasons for this. The first, as mentioned earlier, is that the game has too many fetch quests. Secondly, this game is designed to be played with friends. That's great but the downside is balancing issues when playing solo. Enemies on the harder settings are very tanky. You are forced to slag and kill, slag and kill over and over. This is particularly true when it comes to the DLC bosses which are impossible to solo. Towards the endgame/post-game DLC stage, I found it difficult to vary my playstyle and have as much fun as I'd like to have.

The Borderlands games are amazing for co-op playing. If you want a PvE game where you chill with friends, BL1 and BL2 would be on my recommended list. As a solo player, especially those looking to 100%, I can't recommend the BL games though.

Achievement/Completionist Hunters

The worst aspect of this game has to be 100%ing it to get the platinum. Borderlands 1 is actually better than 2 in this aspect (and yes, I am factoring in the Underdome DLC). I've already talked about the fetch quests and enemy tankiness. On top of that, you need multiple playthroughs. And then some of the achievements are RNG based. Oh and one or more achievements are missable so you may have to start the game/DLC all over again. All of these factors combined make Borderlands 2 an awful game to 100%. It is strongly recommended to drop the game when you are getting achievement burnout.

Conclusion

Borderlands 2 was a better playing experience for me than BL1. I still have to play other BL games but this game felt like the peak Borderlands playing experience. In hindsight, I am glad I didn't drop Borderlands after the first game. Borderlands 2 was worth it! On to the next games on the list!

Ive had this game in my library since I bought it over a decade ago, played it on console and replayed my save on steam in anticipation of BL4. I forgot how good this game is. Best villain in the series, best vault hunters as well. Dragons Keep is my favorite DLC in the whole series and love the DnD aspect of it. Do yourself a favor and buy this game if you like looter shooter games.. or just for the story line itself.

For me, it's not just a game, it's part of an era.

An era when games weren't just games, but something else.
An era when a game wasn't just an artificial running from point to point, but a story that you want to believe in, running from point to point.
This is a game that makes you laugh from the first click at the right moment.
This is a game that was worked on by people who loved it. This is a game in which unique personalities with deep feelings are hidden behind cartoonish graphics and seemingly childish characters.
This is a game in which there are mechanics that break its gameplay, but it doesn't look bad. This game needs to be broken, because it's part of it, because only by breaking it at high levels of difficulty will it stop breaking you.
Bordelais 2 is not just toilet humor, which they like to throw at us so much in modern projects.
These are iconic characters, author's raid bosses, objects for which on the sites of the ages spent more than one hour.
This is a whole world, which in those years when it was released, was considered boundless, unexplored and unique, in which you wanted to live, and to which you wanted to return. It did not have an open world, but an empty world like in modern Ubisoft games, but in my opinion this only makes it better
Unfortunately, the continuation of the game series could not preserve this great contribution that this game gave them, starting to follow the death of the world that we loved so much....
8/10 They don't make games like this anymore

Love this game. I actually enjoy all of these games. This one is definitely the best overall, tho, in my opinion. I like them all for different reasons, but this one had a great mix of upgraded maps, weapons, gear, loot mechanics, and skills with the best overall villain. The story is also presented in a really good way. Part 3 dropped the ball on villains and story for sure, but the gameplay and loot was even better. Hopefully, the writing is a little better for part 4.
