Super Dungeon Boy is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere.
This seems to have a generic platformer theme specifically to try ape the characteristics of Super Mario Bros and Alex Kidd, trying to be a little meta with the theme proposition, but retro pixel crap looks garbage no matter what it's trying to depict. And as always, the underlying gameplay that's supposed to make up for the garbage visual presentation isn't there either.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The controls and game handling are notably very clunky and unsmooth here. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing. They dropped the ball on this one.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Super Dungeon Boy is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
This game is boring/inspired and the enemy placement makes it ridiculously easy to soft-lock one's checkpoint.

Super Dungeon Boy is a very basic action platformer that has some annoying controls. It is good for around 2 hours of play time before getting boring and repetitive.
It's really not worth it; The level design is uninteresting, there are too many pointless achievements, the game is overall boring because no new mechanics are added after the first few levels, and the controls don't feel fluent at all.
For how much it costs its pretty good platformer that you can be in one sitting. Controls well and the game keeps getting more challenge the further you get.
First impressions after a full six minutes of play.
I really like the look of this game, graphics are low res but really well done, very colourful with some nice particle effects and lighting. I hate the feel of the character controls though, just doesn't feel quite right. It needs a little more tuning on the control system and it would be a really great game.
I like a simple platformer as much as anyone (probably more), but this one's pretty lousy. The graphics are fine, but there's no visual variety. There are only 2 enemy types in the entire game (although one comes in two behavior variations). The controls are uncomfortable, with a jerky jump and an awkward wall jump. Several levels are bathed in darkness so you can't see where you're going or what you're doing. Enemies often pop up out of nowhere for cheap hits. The game is quite difficult, but it seems like the difficulty is more a result of unfair enemy placement than well-crafted level design. There are lots of secret chests to find (3 per level), but good luck mustering the patience to scour each stage when just getting through them regularly is a chore. Not recommended.
If it would be for free, than this would MAYBE be okay, but the game is so boring, and you need to waste money on it, so it's not as good as you may think at the beggining, trust me...
Interesting little distraction for the price. Props to the developer for solid controller support though. Very much appreciated.
What do you do? Wander around a maze stage and find the exit, sometimes finding keys first before you can leave. If you really want to, you can hump the walls and the floor to find 3 hats in every stage as well. They don't do anything, just achievement bragging rights.
Only real complaint is that crates have far too much health and for the life of me I have zero idea why. They only ever have coins, why add a few seconds worth to getting them every single time?

This is an honest game. It costs really cheap. It doesn't promise innovation or extraordinary gameplay.
It's a small game made with Unity.
You run through the levels, killing stuff, gathering coins and using them on heart-ups and saves.
I can't say it's really difficult. As soon as you are familiar with controls - it's "your skill vs. level design". Not that hard.
The graphics are okay, the sounds are okay, the story is none. Plain platformer joy.
If you like platformers - you'll have some fun with this one.
Personally, I didn't like it. It's a game I would play back in 2005 or something. But it is done nice and I can't complain. Especially because of it's price. Just not my cup of tea. On other hand Super Dungeon Boy steps up above all those trash "look, I maed t3h gaem" games that flooded Steam recently. Cheers!
NOTE: I have played a very small amount of this game as of now (20/7/2018). My thoughts and feelings probably won't be that accurate to the game's actual quality. I will probably be making edits once I git gud enough to progress further.
Now that that's over with, I'll start by saying that this game is not what the title implies. It is only a clone of Super Meat Boy, in that it's a platformer with wall-jumping that I find difficult. It's closer to the 2D Mega Man X games without robot master abilties in terms of controls and level design. You still need to play the stages in a specific order. There seems to be a bit of a steep difficulty curve between levels A and B, but it could just be that I suck. I find this game fun to play, and I really like the art style, even if it was just made the way it was to save time and/or effort. (I have a soft spot for enhanced 16-bit graphics.) However, the music isn't really that fitting, and it gets a bit annoying. I'm also pretty sure that some of the music is just stock retro-sounding music.

Cheap & simple Axtion Platformer delivers..
You travel thru a dungeons levels A-Z searching for the exit, collecting coins & shooting monstaz along the way.. You can look for sum hidden tokens before you go if you want to add a lil playtime but I wasn't interested..
The look, feel & sound r all adequate, the Game Godz (Tower Up Studios in this case) just didn't add anything memorable to the classic genre..
What ya see is what ya get.. If your looking for a lil axtion to follow a TBS (as I waz), then give it go, it's entertaining enough to finish.. PEACE=]
The game’s an inexpensive distraction that worked well as a supplement with other audio sources, especially considering that the soundtrack gets pretty grating after a few minutes. Nonetheless, where I ended off playing, things got much bumpier. Levels become more devious and the game’s shortcomings begin to stick out. The immobility of the bow pairs very poorly with the three enemy types, leaving encounters awkward. Since combat is so limited, jumping into the fray undoubtable leads to death, making the terrific roll disappointingly underutilized. Coins and their connection to health is interesting yet the system falls prey to cheesing with the low cost of save-states. There’s not much diversity to it, but I am a fan of the pixel art. That little that is presented is pretty solid.
Given that the game had changed up or added very little since the beginning, I had no foreseeable reason to push through and decided to set down Super Dungeon Boy.
I like it. Saw it, bought it and 15 seconds later (only a 30mb download) was playing it. Two hours later I still was. Completing a level usually involves trading a life or two to make it to the next save point. Luckily the levels (the early ones anywaway) are quite short so it's just a matter of memory and reflexes. You'll definitely need a controller though.
Graphics and music wise this game is great, but controls and mechanics leave it feeling very unsatisfying.
- Gravity is way too high
- There is no melee attack
- There is a slight delay between hitting the attack button and the attack actually happening because the attack animation has to play. This feels VERY unsatisfying and makes mid-air shots near impossible, especially with the high gravity.
- Attacking slows my character down while running
- I can't shoot under water
- I can't shoot up or down, only sideways
- There is no stomp option e.g. (down + attack while in mid air)
- Wall jumping feels wrong. I can't use right or left + jump off a wall. I have to jump first and then move
- If I touch a vertical wall I automatically attach to it and slide down slowly. It would be better to have to push right or left while I'm falling down the wall to attach to it, instead of automatically attaching to it like this
- Crates have too much health
- The little pudding/jelly creatures scream for head stomping Mario style but this doesn't work
- While there is always an element of the player moving more slowly in water in most platformers, I feel the slow down is too high in this game.
It's like the devs decided to sacrifice fun to be more realistic.
Super Dungeon Boy is a fun platformer that can get difficult. The only issue I have with the game is that it has no variety in background music. It's just the same tune playing over and over.
High quality old school platformer, it has full joypad support and the controls and gameplay dynamics are spot on. You just need to get to the exit on every level but there are hidden secrets which gives this game some replay value. The ending hints at a sequel - hope it comes to fruition. There's a few hours of gameplay here so it's well worth the money.
Not very interesting game. Just after beating dungeon A, it seems like the game is kinda repetitive. Kill the enemies (or find a way to trick them), and finish a level. Jumping system is terrible - no height control. Maybe someone else will like it, but this one is not in my style.
This is a pretty fun game. Each level is like a puzzle, that needs to be figured out. What I mean by that is: if you figure out the best approach, you'll find it easier to survive.
So if you're finding some area hard, maybe adjust your approach to it. That type of gameplay, also makes it not frustrating in the least.
There are some really good design decisions here. The Roll is especially good. I-Frames and totally controllable length.
I'll let you find out the rest.
And the Controller support is superb. Choose your poisen in the options, by picking the input you have (only if Automatic doesn't work that is). Complete with a picture of an X-Box, PS4 or Keyboard; just in-case you can't read too well. jk.
The only thing I'm missing is some bosses. I haven't come across any.
The price is nutz though. 1.5 hours and I'm just under half way through, it seems like.
And I'm pretty good at these types of games so it may be longer for you to figure out.
Yep. It's underpriced.
So overall. This game is a steal. If you like Spelunky or similar, you should definitely like this.
