Cannot recommend, even for fans of this style.
The visuals are fine but the environments lack atmosphere. This is largely due to a bland soundscape, but also the lighting and post processing.
The game focus on the contrast between areas of light and darkness, but what the game considers 'lit' and 'unlit' often has no relation to what you are actually seeing. A rooftop with no light at all is safe, but one meter away from a lamp is not? It's not always inconsistent, but often enough for it to be annoying.
The bloom is set to insane levels by default, often obscuring vision. It can be turned off but this makes the environments look even more flat than they already do. There is also an issue with scaling. Sometimes (but not always) I would feel as though my character was a child's height. At first it seemed it could be intentional, but as I progressed it became clear it was just some props being scaled wrong.
There isn't a good sense of direction within the game. Guidance is limited and neither lighting, colour, or level design is utilised to point you where it wants you to go. Readable notes and collectable items are highlighted, but that's all. A set of drawers might be intractable or it might not. No way to know until you try.
Accidentally walking into a dark spot during a level can instantly kill you, forcing you to replay from the start, which is more tedious than anything.
The biggest issue though, is the story. It's just not engaging, and the main character always sounds as bored as I felt playing. To be fair, I don't think the voice actor is at fault. It seems more an issue with direction. He delivers the lines as if he's mildly interested at best, even when stalked by a monster.
Narrative wise, it feels like going one place to another with little sense or reason or mystery.
I gave up around 2 hours. Maybe it picks up later, but I feel like the game showed it's hand early, because the end of my playtime felt exactly the same as the start.
There are some interesting ideas in here and I'm sure this team has the potential to to better. As it stands though, Those Who Remain is a bland 'horror' with no scares or tension, about a man running around small weirdly lit rooms clicking on everything until he finds what he needs to move to the next spot, and do it all again.
Those Who Remain is a psychological horror game that uses the light and shadows as a core mechanic. You have to stay in the light to survive, as the darker areas have deadly figures that will kill instantly if you get close. It's a good concept, and the tension of finding safe paths through the darkness keeps the nerves on edge. The story goes into serious topics like guilt and redemption, which adds emotional weight to the gameplay.
The town of Dormont is creepy, with some beautiful lighting effects. That being said, the pace slows down a bit in places where you don't quite understand at first what you need to do, like backtracking to find a key or a door, unlock said door, flip a switch to proceed, or move something out of the way. I algo got stuck in a chase sequence where it wasn't immediately clear how to escape, which let to some trial and error.
Despite these minor hickups, it's a nice horror game with a tense story and cool mechanics.
Quiet American town drenched in darkness and secrets. The game blends psych horror with a heavy dose of tension, making every step feel like a risk. And it is, sometimes you step just a bit more than you planned into the dark areas, and you're slashed by the shadows.
The pacing is a bit slow in some parts, but the eerie atmosphere and moral dilemmas make up for it.
The graphics aren't up to par, the game play is exhausting and tedious, and the story is barely there. I gave it an honest try, but this game is terrible.

A horror game about darkness, both figurative and literal, where the player needs to use light to stay safe. There are armed ghouls in the shadows that will kill you if you get to close, so most of the time you need to stay away and find ways to make them disappear. Sometimes it's not exactly perceivable where you can step in or not, and you might die a couple of times because you didn't get the distance right.
Story is good, tragic of course, but horror needs tragedies.
Everything about this game is garbage.
It feels really tedious and just a chore to get through.
Puzzles are not intuitive. No hand-holding for such obscure solutions.
Running down the corridor with furniture obstacles, that you need to remove in seconds, escaping monster - what could be "better"?
Only absence of checkpoint before this run and 6 doors to guess for correct one in the end of the run - and in case of mistake you must start all over.

The game looks bad.
It's like everything is cast in plastic or play-doh.
The movement is very janky.
You run way too fast (although if that helps you finish this awful game faster then maybe that's good), and the movement itself is just very stiff and sharp. Ruins immersion.
The story/writing is awful. Just a flat, unengaging story that expects you to care.
The voice acting is mediocre at best, and genuinely bad at certain parts. I guess the horrible writing is to blame for this, partially.
Those Who Remain has one of those stories that seem familiar without feeling like a copy from something else.
You get immersed in the story while the game throws a few puzzles at you, that aren't especially easy or hard, ok I guess. Some chases and some mild jumpscares. It's good.

It's not great. It feels really tedious and just a chore to get through, at least for me.
There are some cool moments but the negatives outweigh the positives on this one. Don't get me started on the voice acting...
Not bad at all. Has a good story that keeps you interested until the end. It's not entirely original, but has a few surprises that make it stand on its own.
The other world is especially interesting, but unfortunately it's not that explored. Could be something to dive into in more detail in a future game.
This was a pretty good game, i enjoyed it over all.

There are quite a few things that could be fixed and changed.
Namely fixing a few of the levels so as to not let you fall OFF of the map and into the endless void if you wander too far forcing a quite out and reload. a death barrier under the entire map would fix this.
There are quite a few objects and walls that have ZERO collision.
i managed to break the lighting in a few of the levels. The game was acting like there were lights but it was pitch black. This glitch also lets you bypass flickering lights with the ghosts that kill you.
A couple of the puzzles had ZERO clues on how to solve them, nothing in game at all. i had to resort to googling to figure them out which really breaks immersion and ruins the flow of the game.
It's also frustrating.
(The water pipe puzzle in the police station and the pressure plate puzzle in the church)
There were a few times when an event was supposed to trigger but it simply didn't.
Forcing me to wonder around for 30 plus minutes til it decided to trigger randomly.
A Journal to log all the audio clues and text files you find in game.
It would make solving a certain set of puzzles easier and help keep track of any missed collectibles/papers.
(The Church level requires you to memorize a bunch of papers that have been scattered about to solve the 3 puzzles, a couple of them are easily missed.)
this is less a review and more a list of stuff for the Devs to take a look at.
It was better than expected. The story keeps you engaged although the checkpoint system could be better. I do recommend it if you are into horror games even if it's not that scary
