One of the best mainline Sonic games by far! Hope they bring it to mainline consoles.
This is a near perfect example of how to transition a series from 2D to 3D, and retro gaming fans, and modern Sonic fans alike will love this game. The mechanics of this game are smooth and easy to learn, and has a versatile amount of content hidden throughout the game
The camera controls are bad. I spent most of my time in the chao garden, and i didn't actually use mods on this game.
i really liked this game but i would recommend that you install better sadx or sadx mod installer but i really loved this game and if you whant my rating from 1 to 10 i will give it an 8.8/10.
(date i wrote this 12/6/2024)
This game is an amazing platformer, but this is probably the worst port. Its pretty ugly and buggy in this state (and why is there no widescreen?). Luckily, there is many mods out there that restore the game back to its original Dreamcast glory. The game is still playable without mods, I suppose, but I can only recommend the game if you plan on downloading those fixes.
Sonic Adventure is one of my favorite games of the franchise. Despite the port job by Sega being botched, the community has made this version the best way to experience the iconic title. I highly recommend the Dreamcast Conversion mod, as it is the best way to play Sonic Adventure since the original American 1999 release.
Despite it being ported from the Dreamcast, Sonic Adventure holds true to the speedsters first open world adventure. Just watch out for the graphical glitches and bugs...
More Jank than Nostaliga
As much as I wanted to experience the "glory days" of Sonic with Sonic Adventure, this port is riddled with issues that make it more frustrating than fun:
1) Fullscreen Issues: The game stubbornly sticks to a 4:3 aspect ratio, which looks incredibly dated on modern displays. Attempting to force fullscreen results in a janky experience with dodgy borders or stretched visuals (the window for Steam Big Picture mode breaks if you have 2 windows), making it visually unappealing and uncomfortable to play for long periods.
2) Inconsistent Graphics: The low-poly human characters and levels juxtaposed against the higher-poly Sonic gang create a jarring visual disparity. It feels like you're playing two different games at once, with the poorly aged environments detracting from the more polished character models from the DX version of the game.
3) Graphics and Performance: Even for a game from its era, the graphics in SADX haven't aged well, but the porting to Steam was so lazy that the issues are even worse. Textures are muddy, and the overall visual presentation is underwhelming. What's worse, performance can be hit or miss, with random frame drops that shouldn't be happening in such an old game.
4) Modding Nightmare: While mods can enhance the experience, getting them to work is a headache. Installing and managing mods often breaks the game on Steam (since most mods need you to replace the Steam files with the 2004 version's files), causing lag or deleting saves, achievements dont even work using mods as simple as model swaps. The community-made fixes are great, but the hassle they bring shouldn’t be necessary in the first place.
5) Gameplay Glitches: It's all too easy to clip out of bounds or fall through the environment, which turns what should be fun platforming into a frustrating exercise in dealing with bugs. These glitches aren't just occasional—they're frequent enough to disrupt gameplay regularly.
5) Camera Issues: The camera in SADX is bad. It often gets stuck in awkward positions or fails to follow the action properly, leading to numerous cheap deaths and moments where you're fighting the camera more than the actual game. Chaos 0 and Emerald Coast were terrible to play, looking at online gameplay and emulating the Dreamcast version myself, I know that the camera SHOULD NOT be doing this
If you were hoping for a smooth nostalgia trip, you might want to think twice before diving into SADX. The game's charm is still there, but it's buried under a pile of technical issues that make it hard to enjoy.
Is your save not loading??? Awesome. Here is the FIX. Go to GameBanana, download and install SADX Modloader, then.....!
This is a very dumb fix, but if you are playing the game using Steam you need to go into your SAVEDATA folder here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sonic Adventure DX
.....and freaking delete it. What is happening is the game is trying to load save data from Steam (which there is none because the way the game saves it to Steam is fundamentally flawed) instead of the Mod Loader (which is actually saving things properly). Useless freaking folder.
Base game is a port of a port of a port of a port of a port. You NEED mods to fix it if you are looking for an experience akin to SADX for the Gamecube or Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast. Please get the mod loader and the highly recommended mods for the game, and thank me later. The game runs way smoother with it, and your camera and controls will feel far less funky. Not to mention the game will actually have a lighting engine that doesn't make characters look like rubber!
You are welcome.
EXTREMELY glitchy game, and the controls and camera suck ass. Not to mention I lost my 6 hour save in this game due to simply because how glitchy this game is, I wanted to recommend this game because of the OST and story, but honestly, don't buy this. Just go watch someone play it or watch a walkthrough of it, you'll have a way better experience rather than playing this glitchy crap of a game.
I would suggest buying this game if you are a Sonic fan, but there are things about the game that hold it back. Specifically the audio, graphical errors and glitches. If you do get this game I would suggest modding it to get the best experience.
Nostlagia, and genuinely fun. So campy, silly, and cool. 9.5/10 (Nostalgia)
Very fun when on life support. I have to use 20 mods to keep it running and looking good. Otherwise 10/10 game.
The overall gameplay is fun, (mainly Sonic's) the chao garden is addicting, and overall a blast to play, I reccomend getting it before the December 6th delisting.
Would highly recommend to any new person to the Sonic franchise but would recommend to get the Sonic adventure Dx mod installer to make it look like the original Dreamcast game.
amazing game that got ruined with a horrible port, do not play this without the sadx mod installer
Loved this game as a kid when I first played it 22 years ago as a 5 yr old. For its time, I really liked it. I still kinda like it. But playing it now, especially with it being a bad PC port, it has aged poorly.
- Most of sonic's stages are still good, although hindered by bad camera angles and clipping through walls if you go too fast.
- Tail's stages are solid but they're really all minigames.
- Amy's are okay although too stop-and-go.
- Knuckles' are okay and are improved in SA2.
- Big's are horrible even when you know what to do.
- Final boss is solid still.
- The cinematics are meme-worthy but I do find them fun to watch due to how they are.
Overall, there's alot of jank and you're much better off spending your time playing the best of the 3D sonic games like SA2, Colors, and Generations. 6.0/10.
Adventure 2 gets a lot of hype, but I honestly think this is a better game. The Sonic levels really hit a good balance between going fast and still having control. Some characters' stories are much worse to play through than others (Big), but I would still recommend the game as a whole.
Honestly a really great game despite its issues. The time attack aspect is super fun, especially in Red Mountain and Speed Highway.
The game itself is good and the story is also incredible!
If you look at just the story then it is interesting and fun.
The gameplay is okay but what triggers me the most is the camera angle and how it moves. I had some tough times beating some zones and they were hard because sometimes I couldn't see anything because of the camera moving so badly. Overall if getting 130 emblems would be much easier then I would rate SA1 DX 8/10 but because I had some hard times getting trough it then I have to rate it 7/10. Maybe I just didn't have those skills that I have in other Sonic games.
I know that some people don't like the DX version because Sonic looks like plastic and so on.
I'd rather have 60 fps than 30 fps honestly. Just be happy for what you have. This is just my opinion.
I got it in a bundle with SA2. I got the demo version as a kid. Pretty cool, but it does show it's age sometimes because of the controls and camera
Haven't even finished Sonic's story. Great game. I flipping LOVE the soundtrack, the mouth animations need work.
Sonic Adventure 1...what a game.
Before anything else, this game has deteriorated in quality every time it's been ported, and it's been ported a lot. For me, the audio and controls flat out didn't work out of the box. If you pick up this game, getting the SADX Mod Manager is a MUST, as it comes pre-packaged with a bunch of mods that restore the collision and features from the original release, and make the game work properly on modern hardware.
So after all that work (and it's not that much work, come on), is the game even good? It absolutely is. Sonic is a blast to control in 3D. He's incredibly powerful in this game, and when combined with the game's open level design, the game really allows you to think outside the box and get creative with how you tackle levels. Obviously there are some misses, and some levels have weaker segments, but the amount of creativity and expression a majority of the levels allow for can't be ignored.
This game's main standout feature, however, is it's 6 playable characters. This is where things get a little messy for some people. In my opinion, Gamma and Knuckles are consistently enjoyable albeit easy, Tails is fun but you spend a large amount of his story stuck in gimmicks that don't let you play as him, Amy's levels are slow paced and filled with puzzles that aren't interesting or clever, and you've probably already heard the Big horror stories. The game's camera is also consistently an issue in every story, and it can get REALLY annoying.
Now, all 5 other stories only make up about an hour (or less) each compared to Sonic's roughly 4 hour story. Sonic's story is the main attraction and I think it's worth the price of admission alone (but you should still play the full thing!!). However, when I crunched the numbers...I only enjoyed about 63% of the stages. That didn't sound right. But then I remembered that I didn't like most of the boss fights, and navigating the adventure fields got annoying later on.
So is Sonic Adventure 1 a 6/10? Well, despite it's flaws, SA1 is never unfun for too long, and it's strong level design combined with it's charm has made me love the game, and coming back to it to improve my times or just mess around and find new ways to tackle the stages is a blast. I honestly love this game, and I would absolutely recommend playing it out to the end.
I normally don't review games without beating them or having played them off-platform, but this is an exception.
Sonic Adventure DX is a good game, but this is a bad port. It's buggy, the models and textures are somehow worse, and the lighting is downright awful and ruins the atmosphere. Again, Sonic Adventure is a good game, but this is easily the worst way of playing it. If you still want to play this version, you HAVE to install A mod for a good experience. The mod in question restores how the game looked like when it was originally on Dreamcast, and it works. If want more information, I'd recommend reading through this website that goes into autistic detail about the differences between the versions.

ngl it's embarrassing that the community has to make this game any good. SEGA dropped the ball here.
Somehow I enjoyed playing as Big more than Sonic (irony helps). Milk-esque aging but can't get mad at an old cheap game enough to thumbs down it. I cry for robot every time
Crazy good game! The story is great, the levels are fun, the general vibe screams 90s which is always a treat. It's insane that the first time Sega tried to make Sonic in 3D it came out really great. It's a shame they don't make Sonic games like this anymore. Boost-style games are fun and all, but the Adventure games give the player a sense of control that is unrivaled in the Sonic series.
Biggest flaw: Missions 53 and 54. If you know, you know.
game is REALLY good, despite the fact that this is probably the worst version of this game since its a port of a port of a port.
half the fun on this game is modding it to play custom stagos or just restore the game to its dreamcast form.
really good game, would def recommend with the definitive sadx experience mod and super sonic mod for more replayability.
it is a very good game but you should get SADX mod installer to make it way more better (or bettersadx if you want)
I use to play this on the gamecube. tip for big the cat action stages push down when a fish bites the bait. makes his levels super easy.
It's almost 2025 and Sega still hasn't made anything as good as the Big the Cat sections in this game.
it is a pretty good game and an amazing story line but there are major bugs and frustrating parts that ruin the fun
Peak gaming. This is also a must play if you're either new to the series or want to get into the lore.
Play it with the SADX mod manager installed. It may not the best-looking or best-playing game out there. But it has alot of charm and personality for which I can't fully describe. Fuck press "X" to dash, momentum FTW.
NOTE OF WARNING: the base game that you get off a fresh install is kind of notorious for being a shoddy port (or more accurately a port of a port of a port of a remake) that messes with a lot of the artistic choices, namely lighting and some texture reworks. For the best experience I implore you to look into downloading the SADX Mod Installer (I'll link it below) which will 1.) revert the Steam version into the 2004 PC version, and then 2.) apply various mods to the game to restore a lot of the Dreamcast version's aesthetics, alongside some bug fixes. On Steam Deck you'll also need Protontricks to run the installer and download the dependencies, but it's relatively easy and there's a few guides to do so easily.

First and foremost as a guy who only recently played the game I so desperately want to find whoever said "Sonic had a rough transition to 3D" and launch them to the moon. This game is a downright impressive conversion of the 2D gameplay and aesthetic into 3D that the series hasn't quite been able to replicate. All of the characters (barring Big the Cat) feel fluid to play as, the levels are all varied and fun to play through even with character-specific revisits, the soundtrack is phenomenal (hooking a fish has never felt so cathartic), the *Dreamcast version's* graphics hold up rather well (DX looks a bit meh, especially this PC port on its lonesome, but eh), and in general it's a pleasant experience all around.
Give it a whirl if you want a taste of the franchise at its arguable peak.
This game is being delisted along with every game in the Genesis/Mega Drive and Dreamcast collections (including Sonic Adventure 2) on the 6th of December, if you've ever wanted to play this game please get it soon. It's not as good as the 2nd one and it's a bit rough around the edges but it's still a fun game. I don't recommend playing this game vanilla since the port is abysmal but there's a mod loader you can get that comes with a bunch of restorations built in that make it much closer to the Dreamcast version and it's easy to install.
This game is so bad that it makes even sonic 4 and 06 seem polished in comparison. It's filled with so much jank and bugs, along with no sense of direction whatsoever. If Heroes didn't exist, this would be by far the WORST sonic game of all time.
Enjoyed it quite a bit. The game holds up pretty well. The negatives the camera is diabolical and a few of the platforming stages i found very difficult due to inconsistent controls. Positives the music and I quite liked the hub world. It could do with a full remake to iron out the issues but this was well worth playing through.
Rough transition to 3D MY ASS. This game rules even 25 years later! Hilariously terrible voice acting, the surprisingly grave story that is told in both complete sincerity and in the campiest way possible, the series defining soundtrack with its use of incredibly corny lyrical bangers, 6 playable character of which only 1 is terrible (and even then, big has one of the shortest campaigns), the extremely cryptic mission mode that works wonderfully with the game's atmospheric hub worlds and fun stages, and a final act that cemented my love for this series. I genuinely don't understand why we don't regard this in the same breath as Super Mario 64 because this game is what I see as the genre-defining 3D action platformer. Please play this if you haven't already; its under 10 dollars.
Great game but a bad port. Theres videos out there going into all the specifics but basically from the original dreamcast release to the dx version on gamecube and the original pc release of dx there were alot of lighting and visual bugs that make the game overall uglier, at the very least it runs at 60fps but theres no official widescreen support or any hd upgrades like with the adventure 2 remaster. Thankfully the game is fairly easy to mod and restore all the features that were cut such as the game gear titles with mission mode, and the overall lighting. Despite what steam says it worked on my steam deck with really 0 issues (the launch settings made me have to use the on screen keyboard but other than that it worked out the box). Even if you don't mod it, the game plays fine and sounds great, it'll just look alot less colorful and vibrant compared to even the original dc version. Hopefully this game doesn't get delisted like the other games they seem to be taking down for greed, its literally a steal if you nab it at a discount whether it be a code or a sale, but at $8 its good fun.
i loved adventure, really was a blast from the past, cant wait for the next game about the blue blur. has some kinks and glitches but overall a great game
8/10
if your thinking about buying this game buy it now
sega is going to delist most of its genesis and dreamcast games off steam which could include sa1 and sa2
Sometimes buggy as hell, but still a really fun game, with a impressingly good story, the 2000s feel of the game also makes me feel nostalgic and also I just find it really charming.
the only part of the gameplay that I found really annoying is the one of Big the Cat, which is a shame cause I think the character is so funny lol.
7.9/10
Only 4 of the 6 campaigns are any good, but the 4 that are good are some of the best stuff to ever be in a Sonic game. (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Gamma are the good ones. Amy and Big are just poop lol) It's really a shame that some gameplay styles here have never been revisited since, like Knuckles' emerald hunting, and Gamma's time attack structure. Like sure they were kind of revisited in SA2, but they were much worse there for some reason lol. But yeah this game is awesome. It's my 2nd favorite Sonic game, next to Project 06 as my top favorite. It also has one of the best soundtracks just ever, it's great.
even though the game has some bad parts aka big with mods it is Awsome and even without mods it is still great
5 great playable characters that has the 2nd best story in the sonic franchise and started the best era of sonic storytelling. id recommend and it gets even better with the customization it can have, also big +}
Played it again with the steam version and it was very cool, the city hub is nice, good platforming and speed stuff!
To this day still the most fun 3D Sonic game, from running at mach speed through a weirdly constructed highway, through treasure hunting for jewels, to losing your sanity trying to catch that goddamn 2000g fish which you might THINK that you may HOPE to reel in this 50th attempt, but then it just decides to swim away and disappear for no reason. Such a variety of content!
Sa1 better than Sa2(my only complaint is that why do i need to get a mod manager for the game to look good, but overall pretty good game)
idk if i'd say this game is good but it's still kinda fun. super goofy and jank and really frustrating at points but also it's got a really charming vibe and it can still be enjoyable unironically at points. peak bad
I grew up with this game on the SEGA Dreamcast, and the Steam SADX port does not fail in recreating that childhood nostalgia. Very easily a staple in video game history - the code to this game was AHEAD of its time.
