As a certain internet funny man once said: "it's an honor to, like, experience it, y'now? like, I don't think everyone deserves to, but everyone should".
Playing the story? anyone could do it.
100% (according to the game)? could be fun (not counting Big's Twinkle Park rank A).
The Missions? wouldn't wish it upon anybody without internet to look up:
A) where the cards are
B) what you are supposed to do
C) how to do Missions 53 and 54 without a TAS.
Great sonic game! The first real 3D sonic game was so good! Really don't understand why people say that sonic had a rough transition to 3D when this was the first full 3D game.
This game is super fun! I adjusted the movement for a better experience and its nice! Just a few bugs from being ported by so many people though. I really like Sonic's story! All the boss fights are pretty easy, I love the story, and although it isn't like the Dreamcast version, I like the good graphics! I'm very close to finishing Tails story which gives me more things to learn about, always been a fan of SA1 & SA2!
Also I got this with a gift card so yeah no money spent
Amazing game!Rough port though, download mods to make it better
other than camera and platforming its pretty good
this shit aint even a directors cut 0/10
but in all seriousness it's just a solid and convenient way to play sonic adventure, if you can stand glitches and bugs, also you can't get a single game over here (unless you're playing as big the cat lol)
this game is a true classic. And is a must play for new sonic fans/classic sonic fans who want to go 3D. This is a fast paced fun adventure that lives up to the name, every story is fun (besides big) and is a 10/10 game, that really hits what it was aiming for. a fun, action packed adventure that is dare I even say better than sonic adventure 2? But you can decide that after you play this game!
the game gets a little annoying later on but the cutscenes are peak
Ok so, this game isn't the best but it is pretty fun once you get into it and it does have its charm.
What I did like:
- Most character play-through's were really fun and enjoyable
- Goofy dialogue
- Nostalgic feel
- Price: cheap as heck for the amount of content
What I didn't like:
- Sonic's playthrough: Very janky and I was clipping out of bounds or getting stuck on objects one too many times. Speed was almost uncontrollable first time playing, wasn't able to get used to it until after I beat the game
- Big the Cat's playthrough: Pure pain, had to look up how to actually catch things
- A level missions: Extremely tight times and criteria for certain levels, others were too lenient. Inconsistent difficulty
- The Camera: It just does not want to stay put where you want it.
- The Chao race: Requires a ridiculous amount of time to grind your stats
If you're a fan of sonic I would definitely recommend picking this up. Otherwise the game is still good so it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up regardless if you're familiar or like sonic.
Pretty good, especially when you consider its a Gamecube redux of a Dreamcast release. The controls aren't great but the level design and gameplay is fun. The toughest bosses are the camera and flat surfaces. Oh, and GET A LOAD OF THIS: this OST is FIRE.
Game for autistic people.
shitty port, requires mods
Definitely the best sonic game i've played. I know it upset me more than once with jank and dated design, but its actually a really solid transition to 3D for such high-speed gameplay, and once you get a handle on it, its pretty fun. Favorite level is Red Mountain. RIP my son eggyolk he aint dead but i havent seen him in a while.
Sonic had a pretty epic transition to 3d, while I think the port has its issues I still recommend it on the fact that it's a very replayable game while yeah some sections like Amy's levels aren't very fun but then you have such GOATed sections like the ever iconic Big the Cat fishing levels overall 10/10 would play as Big the Cat again
It was first 3D Sonic platformer game that got released and which have more then just having Sonic's gameplay - running from point a to point b as fast as possible, like beating somebody else in a race, fleeing from somebody, geting to end of the stage and maybe have boss fight in time limit which you can increase... ok those gameplay are more or less same, but there is also treasure hunting and fishing.
Fishing maybe could have been implemented at least a little bit better.
So this game isn't who want to play just as Sonic, because if you want to know full story you need to play all character campaigns.
Overall I enjoyed this port even if I noticed some problems. Those weren't game breaking problems. And really why playing pinball is counted as mandatory stage? Ok you have option to do that stage in regular way but multiple times. But I can't do it in time with legimate method.
So I don't know if I missed something from orginal version.
game is good but if you neve3r played before or never saw someone play sometimes you get stuck so you might wanna use google
Probably one of, if not the best 3D Sonic game. Except for Amy and Big's stories. Those were the bad parts of the game, but 5/7 of the game is still really good. I highly recommend.
Well unlike a lot of people I really liked the DX Port and dare I say even prefer it over the Dreamcast version. The Adventure Games are a must-play for any sonic fan and steam makes it super easy to play these old games! I loved the variety of characters you have here: Sonic, Miles, Knuckles, Amy and ugh.. Big... which also brings me to the thing I disliked.. BIG THE CAT. Who Thought this was a good idea, to bring to a Sonic game.. Basically you have a rod and need to catch fish with Big. This does not belong in a Sonic Game and es I do understand Amy being slow but she only has 3 Levels so it´s fine plus you still walk not like this other purple excuse of a cat...!!
What I´d like to add though would be that for the definitve playthrough mods are such a quality of life change that It´s Impossible to play without, once you use them. The SA Mod Manager makes the Game so much better that I had to mention it. Especially because of the Ability to play as Super Sonic in the In-game stages. The Mission mode is also fun except one Mission as Miles (Tails.) As I 100% the Game I can assure you that Ice Cap Mission as Miles is the true test of your calmness like they really make you suffer big time. Oh and A-Ranking, have fun with that... and the moment you think you´ve done all that pain and can finally rest, worry not they have a pleasent Surprise in store for you after you get 130 Emblems.. (Metal Sonic)
To Conclude everything I can 100% say you ought to play SA1, if you´re a Sonic Fan and if not, It´s a great sonic game to start with, just a bit unusual, as I think you should start with Sonic 3&K or Sonic Mania.
PS: I´m writing this after I 100% Mania which is a tale for another time.
If you read this far, thanks for your time and thanks for reading. Have a good one, bye
Only buy the game if you plan on installing mods, if not just play the Gamecube version or something, it's way better.
Positive sides:
+Vivid colorful kind game
+unique bright characters
+dinamic gameplay, different for each char
+music
+unique interesting bosses
Negative sides:
-camera (it sucks, just super sucks)
-level mapping (except Emerald Coast maybe)
-physics of levels
-game has no any optimization for current PC: 25-30 fps and video card almost in sleepmode, widescreen is not supported, leapsync is not exist as class, FOV is not possible to change
-story of all chars except Sonic's one is too short
Conclusion:
In current time this game more actual for old funs. Modern players will get mostly negative experience because many factors. Mods surely can fix some problems, but definitely not all.
it was my childhood and big wasn't that hard to beat once you learn to mash anticlockwise in all stages except the final stage where you mash up and right. Even if it's not your childhood its worth it imo. very good action game at being fun rather than 'competitive'.
Going to give my review of Sonic Adventure DX. The game is great, fun story, great characters and awesome music. Even though the cut scenes have jank to it, can't deny it has charm. My issues with the game are he bugs. It's littered with textures not being right, compressed audio for some reason, removed lantern engine making everything bright at night, I could go on but it's not the best. The mission mode isn't fun especially mission 53 and 54, those stages are not enjoyable . And some action stages can be hard to get A Rank but it's not terribly hard. If you're thinking of giving the game a try i recommend using mods with it, you get the OG models, textures, lighting engine, widescreen, bugs fixes and other stuff. It's a much better experience, but yeah it's a good game despite the flaws. Solid 7/10 (with mods).
8.5/10. just be warned, BIG THE CAT'S STORY SUCKS! He is so buggy and boring. The camera is also so unforgiving. You need to manually adjust it at points to face your actual objective. the game is also unclear about where to go and what to do at times. The S ranks are also hard to figure out on your own so search up a guide to figure them out. final thing, the writing and audio isn't the greatest but what do you expect?
Broken from the start. Have to mod the shit out of it from 3rd party sites. Dope+
This was my first Sonic game, and MY GOD do I have some thoughts!
Firstly, I have to say that, just like the other reviews, you DEFINITELY need to download mods for this game. I wanted to play this game without mods at first, only to come across an unfixable sound glitch that got rid of all audio for my game. This is what caused me to break and mod the game. Personally, I got Dreamcast Converter, which patched several bugs and made the game much more playable, as well as fixed lighting issues as well. If I remember right, I used Game Banana to do so.
Now, I'll talk about the game itself:
I LOVED this game. I got into the Sonic Franchise thanks to the Sonic The Hedgehog movies, so I did research on what game to start out with. I didn't want a 2D platformer, since I am more used to three-dimensional games, and this delivered for me.
The storylines were very fun to play with despite having some frustrations at times, and I really do recommend this game!
If you do have frustrations, try your best to push through! You learn the more you try, and I REALLY learned that while playing, especially when I got stuck on bosses. If you are truly stuck, don't feel ashamed to search up tips on what to do! Trust me, I dislike searching up tips when I am stuck during a game, but it is much better than quiting a game entirely due to one small hiccup!
I really tried, but I just couldn't enjoy this game. I didn't even want to bother finishing every route. It just wasn't any fun for me. There were aspects I enjoyed, I loved the music, some of the zones themselves really weren't that bad, and while the voice acting and graphics haven't aged the best- I did find it endearing. My main gripes come from the overworld segments and the disjointed nature of the other routes. In Sonic's story, you zip and dash through levels, but it Knuckle's route you're exploring all the levels kinda slowly, and then in Amy's story you have to deal with her incredibly slow running speed. It's super inconsistent, which hey - if you appreciate the different gameplay styles, that might be up your alley, but for me personally, I didn't find any portion of the game super fleshed out. I just feel like this game has seriously, seriously aged. When compared to something like Mario 64 which came out two years earlier, it's honestly a huge mess (though that's not to say Mario 64 isn't dated either), there's so much jank.
But hey, as with any Sonic game, if you're truly interested in this entry, you should give it a try yourself and form your own opinion on it. It seems like everyone has something different to say
ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONIC GAME . i recommend you buy this game now. especially the fact that its compatible with controllers to boost that feeling of playing this during your childhood
Released in 1998 for the Dreamcast, it was one of the first 3D platformers, and boy does it show. Three words best describe this game: haste makes waste.
I can forgive the sparse landscapes. It was a first generation 3D game. Everyone was still trying to figure out how to make a 3D platformer, so I understand why the game feels sparse. i can even forgive the camera bugs to a point. Every early platformer had this problem. Nobody knew how the camera should behave, and it's because of trial and error done on these early games that game designers figured it out.
But I can't forgive the camera bugs this time. At the start of the game (Chaos 0), they are horrible! The camera zips around erratically, sometimes panning to Sonic's feet for no apparent reason, and getting the camera to point at the enemy he's fighting is a pain in the ass. It's very possible to die on the very first playable area just because the camera is an enemy unto itself!
And the problems just keep getting worse. Each level is short and narrow with no room to move or run. Some of them are just plain annoying, like the Casino area. It's long, boring, slow and adds nothing in the way of fun. The Adventure Fields are a total waste of time, as are the humans populating this new world.
The cutscenes are laughable! Characters are constantly bouncing up and down, and for no apparent reason, so you can't take anything they say or do seriously. The voice acting is also awkward (at least here in North America). Knuckles' emotionless "oh no" is especially lousy. The story also makes no sense. It sure tries to build up to a grand finale, but it fails.
Finally, the Chao are stupid.
I liked the multiple storylines. I really did. I especially like how Knuckles' and Big's stories came together. Tails finally has a decent role as well, though his flying is pathetically limited. Knuckles has better flying than Tails, and that's sacrilege in my book. The variety in gameplay is refreshing, and seeing these multiple stories come together is great. Especially e-102 gamma's. A bird trapped in a robot's body seeking to free both himself and his family from their robotic bodies. It's a story that can only be done in the Sonic universe and it's the best in the game! That, and the game's soundtrack make it worth finishing!
But the story as a whole is a confusing mess. By the time I reached the final boss I still didn't know what was going on. Such an enormous buildup and nothing makes sense.
It's well-known Sonic Team was pressured to release the game before it was finished in order to meet the Dreamcast's shipping deadline. The proof is in the game itself. The early levels are littered with camera bugs, cramped environments and awkward cutscenes. Then, in the game's later levels, the environments become more refined and the camera glitches all but disappear. Levels are still cramped, but they feel more like real environments instead of graphics demos. I guess the story was evolving at the same time as the graphics, too. Maybe it would've made more sense had Sonic Team been given more time to develop the game.
Everything about Sonic Adventure is half-done, but it never feels like a bad game. Rather like a first draft. It left me wanting the finished product. If any game out there deserves a remake, it's Sonic Adventure.
This game is great just make sure to download the sadx mod manager and dreamcast conversion
It's a bit janky around the edges, but it's still just as fun as it was growing up
With mods to fix some issues as well as lighting and level restoration, it's also like rediscovering each area anew for the first time. We haven't really gotten another Sonic game with the sheer amount of character and gameplay variety since, though the sequel is somewhat close.
In any case, if you like Sonic and can handle the occasional backrooms clip, it's a good game.
interesting story, and funny
Even though this is the steam version, sonic adventure is genuinely one of the greatest sonic games ever. It represents such an amazing era of sonic when they actually cared. This game is just simply magical.
So you can do a lot like finsh the sonic story mod the game Do. what ever you want like had modded characters
Great game, dont look at my playtime. I played the game in offline mode. after like 6-7 hours i managed to complete all of the storylines and defeated perfect chaos. 8,5/10. Camera is a bit janky.
While this is not the best version of Sonic Adventure it is still incredibly fun. I just wish Sega would have made more Sonic games that captures the Jenesequa of this and Adventure 2.
Sonic Adventure DX is a fantastic re-release that captures the charm and excitement of the original Dreamcast classic. The game’s vibrant visuals, energetic soundtrack, and diverse cast of characters make it a joy to revisit, especially for fans of the Sonic franchise and nostalgic gamers alike.
The gameplay remains engaging, with a variety of campaigns that keep things fresh—from high-speed platforming with Sonic to the more methodical exploration with characters like Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. The addition of new missions and challenges adds replayability, and the revamped graphics give the game a fresh look while preserving its original spirit.
However, the game isn’t without its quirks. The camera system can sometimes be frustrating, especially during fast-paced sections or tight platforming. It occasionally struggles to keep up or gets stuck in awkward angles, which can lead to some unintended deaths or missed jumps. Speaking of deaths, there are moments in Sonic’s campaign where cheap deaths can occur—sometimes due to camera angles or unpredictable obstacles—that can be a bit frustrating, particularly for new players trying to master the speedrun segments.
Despite these issues, Sonic Adventure DX remains a delightful experience that offers a solid blend of nostalgia and fun. If you’re willing to overlook some camera quirks and occasional cheap deaths, it’s definitely worth jumping into for a dose of classic Sonic excitement.
Tbh, this game hasn't aged that well compared to other sonic games, but in my opinion, i think its still worth playing atleast once. If you are to play it tho, i'd recommend downloading better SADX, it just makes the bad steam version much more like the original Dreamcast version. I personally think the game is worth its price just to see what the first 3D game was like in the series!
I know steam says I have only played it for 12 minutes, but I have actually played all of sonic's story. I think it has to do with me playing it with mods. This game is significantly better with mods.
This is not a review of the base Sonic Adventure DX. This Steam release is a port of a port of a port of a port, making it very faulty with a lot lost in translation. You should 100% take some time to at least download BetterSADX with the Dreamcast conversion mod and then get a mod loader to apply some improvements. Playing this game as is will not at all be so enjoyable.
Sonic Adventure was an ambitious game for 1998, but that ambition wasn't fully realized and so its gameplay and story aren't the greatest throughout. The hubworlds provide great world building, especially if you speak with the npcs, but they do sometimes result in you not knowing what to do even with the help of the guide orb. Another fault of the game are the bosess because they're almost all either way too pathetic or are just boringly drawn-out. You will be forced to fight some of the same bosses multiple times throughout the stories which is annoying when you're going against the snoozefest that is Chaos-4. The game has several different gameplay styles that heavily differ in quality, length and originality. It falls into the trap of trying to appear like a massive game that has a lot to offer to everybody, but in doing so it fails to nail down every aspect which makes it appeal to fewer people.
From best to worst:
Sonic is 100% the most fun part of this game and has the longest most fleshed out campaign with 10 levels, almost going to every "zone". His speedy platforming gameplay is really fun and the control is surprisingly good for the time. You should get some improvement mods to fix aspects like the wall collision though and to make the light speed dash instantaneous. His story features some of the best levels in the series like Speed Highway and Red Mountain, though some others like Windy Valley or Icecap aren't as amazing. Once you beat the game as every character, you unlock the final boss. You of course play as Sonic and the final bossfight is pretty good. It would be better though if you weren't able cheese it by going backwards to easily get your speed back up so you can attack.
Knuckles' treasure hunting is honestly a perfect translation of his gliding and climbing gameplay from before. You gotta fly around until you detect an emerald shard and then must figure out where exactly it is. It's complete RNG but it's still enjoyable to try to find everything quickly in these in and out levels. The levels themselves are just the more open sections of Sonic's levels though which makes his campaign less original. He does have a good boss with his final fight against Chaos-6 actually sorta providing a challenge.
It may be a bit controversial to say, but I think Amy's gameplay isn't as bad as others make it out to be. The main complaint is that she's too slow, and while that is true, you can still have fun if you treat her like an acrobat because you go faster if you continuously jump and you can attack enemies midair. A robot named Zero is chasing you but, he's a complete non-threat with a worthless attack and the ability to be stunned with a simple attack. They're quite pathetic. Her campaign is actually the shortest of the characters, only having 3 levels. The good thing though is that she visits unique areas in these levels, the most stand-out being the inside hall of Twinkle Park. The levels themselves do admittedly consist of fairly simple platforming and puzzle solving, but it is quite fun if you are able to enter a flow-state of jumping and attacking to have yourself flawlessly weave through them.
Tails' gameplay is the first that I'd call badly designed. His flying causes problems because you can basically just skip over everything in the level because you play through Sonic's stages again which weren't made with flying in-mind. They have this gimmick where you have to race Sonic because Tails wants to prove himself as capable, but Sonic can't at all keep up with you and it's kinda sad to see the AI struggle and desperately rubberband. Tails also has some odd pacing because later on in the story you do a series of levels that aren't platforming, but maybe that's for the better because it gives you something you can't just cheese. I still rank Tails higher than the other characters because of the option to still interact with the level design instead of flying over everything and because he does get some unique flying sections to himself. They are kinda dull to be honest though.
The design of Gamma's gameplay is very sound on paper, but in execution it's clear that along with Tails, he didn't get a lot of attention. His gameplay tasks you with defeating enemies to get extra time on the clock, but you'll get much bigger bonuses for defeating them in groups. The thing is though, you get way too much time to begin with and the levels are too way too short to really make it a concern. It kinda results in you just turning your brain off as you demolish every enemy in sight. Only his final level, Hot Shelter, actually requires you to focus on getting some extra time to get through it. His final fight I think is another good boss fight, with it engaging you quite a bit to attack it.
Honestly, the only reason why Big is the worst is because his fishing controls are confusing and he just doesn't at ALL fit into a Sonic game. Watch a YouTube tutorial to understand how to get through his story easily. His levels to be fair do still have some platforming in very unique areas with upgrades to search for. It's not a lot though because he gets the second shortest story with only 4 levels. If you're someone who likes fishing then I guess this is good enough and is overall better designed than both Tails and Gamma, but a fast-paced action platforming game locking the final boss behind having you fish is such an absurd move.
The story here is very enjoyable but has major issues, namely in the infamous presentation problems but also with its consistency. The story is told across the various characters' campaigns where they experience different perspectives of the story. There are some odd inconsistencies where the exact events and core details change across characters. There are flashbacks that provide backstory to the main antagonist and to Knuckles' ancestors. These flashbacks happen at seemingly random points though and Knuckles himself doesn't seem too interested in them which is a shockingly big missed opportunity. The reason that this is still one of my favorites stories is because the individual quests and writing of each character is amazing. Sonic goes on an epic adventure, Tails become his own independent hero, Amy shows her kindness and wants to prove herself to Sonic and Gamma has a heart-touchingly sad story. Knuckles' story could've been better focused on his ancestors and Big's story, is just goofy I guess. Regardless of all this, I can look past the problems of this storytelling to really appreciate what it does to make me love these characters.
For a game from 1998, I still think it holds up fairly well when it comes to visuals, with the most distracting aspects just being the human npcs and the detail of the jungle area. The theming of the locations is great even if I'd prefer if it blended more of the Classic Sonic design visuals into it. The music of this game is some of my favorite music of all time. There is the major issue of there not being tailored made music to fit the cutscenes. This results in music starting to play before getting cut off abruptly, or the music restarting when the scene has to change or load another area. Regardless, this is more of a presentation issue than a music issue.
Again, PLEASE mod this game to restore it to the much more competent Dreamcast version with fixes and improvements so you can give it a fairer chance. I used to not quite like this game before but restoring it has made me come around to honestly loving it. Sonic Adventure is a flawed game, but its importance to the series cannot be taken away from it.
Stole my personality from Amy Rose, so yeah, I like the game and highly recommend it.
I told you we'd be friends the next time we met. Even birdie wants the best for you! **^-^**
This game is good, but do yourself a favor and get the SADX Mod Manager as tbe game doesnt look too hot in it's current state
Aside from the camera that is absolutely trash, the game is really good
Sega Back then saw the Mario 64 sells said bet lets try to make the same this came out, then the dramecast die lol.
But great game do you even know how fast I am boy.
Fun but flawed classic game. I can definitely see how this game must've been jaw-dropping during its time, and still is a pretty decent game to play nowadays. The controls are pretty clunky, but that usually comes with any old game and I can get past that most of the time. Although this port might be disappointing compared to the Dreamcast original it still is playable and if you're determined then modding is a great way to experience what the Dreamcast version looked like. Sonic's stages are great, tons of campaigns, and pretty decent level design and a good soundtrack. The worst thing about this game is Big's campaign, but it's short and there is a good community guide on steam on how to fish as Big and there are walkthroughs on YT. 7.5/10, leagues better than SA2.
Just 100 % the game and still all that mission crap i have to say that i love this game,my favourite of the bunch i recommend it to anyone looking for a fun time (just dont play Bigs story a lot)
It's about 50/50 on if it's good or not, I wouldn't say you should buy this if you're new to the series, some of it, is really frustrating (Egg Viper, Amy Levels) Otherwise it's Decent
I'm close to 100%ing the game, so I'll give my opinion.
Sonic Adventure is unarguably in the top 5 Sonic games EVER. The lore isn't the greatest or anything, but that game is almost 30 years old soon. The lore is pretty easy to understand, and the game is kinda addicting when you don't drop it instantly after the first mission.
Out of the 6 characters, I'd say I had the most fun with Amy. Sonic was super fun too, but Amy's stages really stood out for me. Even though she only had 3 stages, solving them all was genuinely fun, sucks she wasn't playable in SA2. Knuckles' stages were enjoyable, but they were way too easy. Don't even let me start on Big, man. That was just horrendous to play, boring and sloppy, not a style of Sonic gameplay. I'd say that Tails was also pretty fun, probably the 3rd best story. Gamma's story was cool too and kinda sad. Sucks that he went so soon.
Getting B & A ranks is also pretty fun (EXCEPT THE LAST 3 SONIC LEVELS, RAGHHH). The OST of this game is truly phenomenal. I guarantee that every stage will get you bopping your head.
Took less mods to fix than SA2B did, so that's a plus. Overall still holds up and brings back fond memories. Runs better than most games these days. Recommend if you just wanna revisit an old gem for fun or want to play a game that isn't as broken as some AAA games are these days.
Best part is the cheat to skip Big's story entirely because I am not that masochistic nor do I want to ignite the PTSD from my childhood of fishing for Froggy.
I have incredible nostalgia for this game, as well as Sonic Adventure 2. This game is almost better now than it was when I was a kid. If you have nostalgia for playing this game when you were young, you will love playing it again now. It really holds up.
Nostalgia glasses off: The game is fun, but there are some really cheap deaths due to them not having figured out 3D platforming for Sonic just yet. Lots of falling down bottomless pits in ways that feel cheap. The achievements feel bugged. I currently have full completed Sonic, Tails and Knuckles stories, but I only got the achievement for Sonic, which felt incorrect, but apparently there is only the one achievement. No love for the rest of Sonic's crew, I guess. The level designs are reused for different characters, and the boss fights are the same in many cases, so it's a little repetitive.
Solid 8/10. Must replay for Sonic fans.
I like this game becuse it is so true to the dreamcast but better geraphics...way to go steam
Bigs story sucks and so does amy, SOnics story is amazing, exept for the 9th lvl
