Fantastic Arena FPS! Reminds me of UT. Tell your friends!
Master Arena is an amazing take on a modern Arena First Person Shooter that perfectly captures the nostalgic feeling of Unreal Tournament. It provides all the classic mechanics of an Arena FPS, such as fast-paced gunfights, strategic movement, close-quarter combat, and the iterative nature of trying to master the skill of movement and aiming.
Unfortunately, due to its challenging nature and the fact that it requires a unique set of skills that most modern games don't, the genre is not popular in 2022.
Despite this, Master Arena has managed to create a great atmosphere for competitive team-oriented gameplay with their take on Instagib Capture the Flag. This mode provides a great blend of fast-paced shooting and strategic team-play that allows for a lot of different strategies, making it one of the best experiences I've had in a long time.
However, I wish the development team had put more effort into a modern take on a basic team-based mode, such as CTF or Elim, in order to make the game more attractive and appealing to new players.
Overall, Master Arena is a great take on a modern Arena First Person Shooter that captures the nostalgia of the classic titles and offers a great team-oriented experience with its take on iCTF.
All in all, Master Arena is a great game, and I would play it more if they took the time to make their own version of the most popular Capture The Flag map of all time - CTF-Duku.
As a Professional Instagibber, I aprove this game.
An intense, quake-like FPS game
Fun arena shooter. good movement if you learn it. At first it might feel slow till you learn the tech. Worth the money just to have a game to shot bots on. They arent too easy if you turn them all the way up. Not enough players to review pvp part.
This game feels very solid. Really fun and addictive. Maps are beautiful and well designed.
UPDATE: After almost 60 hours, still playing it and having a blast. The bad reviews come from people who play 10 minutes and think they know everything about the game now. The game has gone free to play, very accessible, it even has now a campaign mode so newcomers can become familiar. The developers are very friendly and helpful, and really listen to suggestions.
I love Arena Shooters like Quake and UT, so I bought this game hoping it would be similar to those with a decently alive community. I can't speak for the community, but playing the game myself with bots, I have to say it's boring compared to other arena shooters. Since it billed itself as inspired by Quake and Unreal, I expected the game to be somewhat fast, but it feels like it plays at a snail's pace compared to those games. With that lack of speed, the game just isn't very exciting. I like the idea of the jumping mechanics it has, but the game is just boring. The weapons on maps also need some better balancing, it's nearly impossible to find a shotgun in this game. I will give them props for having a good grenade launcher though, which was excluded Quake Champions.
A pretty good Arena FPS overall! Although, I would like to see a bigger playerbase as well as an improvement to the offline gameplay modes.
This is not a "NO!", it is a "nah.... not yet". Needs more maps and better bots. The bots are not totally awful, but they should be better. Not "snipe you from across the arena" better, "play like people" better. They should have different skills levels; the lesser ones shouldn't be too dumb to function and the better ones shouldn't be Xan Kreiger on steroids either (maybe at the top level). The interface and map selection / map list creation should be better too. I mean if you are gonna get the gang together to play, then ok, could be pretty fun. It's better than some arena games, it looks nice and the weapons are good. It just isn't as good as the OG arena shooters. It is close enough however that I still intend to keep an eye on it.
Free edition edit review:
Maybe it is my old rig, but the load time is forever. It crashed a couple times. I mean, I can run Toxikk, UT4, Rage 2 at least decent. I think this ran better before. Bots still need work. Should be able to change bot number and skill easily in all modes. I love a bombing run kind of game but this keeps crashing. Arenas feel awkward to move around. Still it can be fun for a bit, if you and maybe some friends have nice new computers.
There's a real core atom of promising gameplay as well as a notable lack of crashes and buggy stuff for something still in alpha. Think movement and physics close to the original UT, whilst still being able to gleeful bounce around like an idiot in the later editions, with a weapons roster inspired by both UT and Q3A in equal measure.
Good fast fps game with a different variety of movements to practice
So i am rewriting this review simply because this game is FANTASTIC. The dev's listened and delivered, CTF is a thing and its even got the bots playing. A.I. Has improved massively and is now a fight to survive. This game is great its fast paced its got advanced moves its got the guns the gore its getting good guys.
I will keep watching this game as its looking like a BEAST.
To sum it up: The best arena shooter in a long period of time, everything is done perfectly, bringing unreal tournaments best moments together with the best things, which made quake so addictive, movement possibiliets are brilliant, playing the maps smoothly to the gallery + the workshop support, which is perfectly integrated into the game, is the cherry on the cake. Thumbs Up !
Extremely high level of polish for an "Alpha" Early-access game. No noticeable bugs, and great performance. Features Unreal Tournament style announcers (that is, "HEADSHOT!" and what have you) tied to Steam achievements, which is a nice touch. Very promising overall.
Dont buy this game.. its dead.. no players to be foun.. no bots
Failed to innervate in a crowded and competitive genre. Would of been cool to see some gun play mechanics that build off of but aren't constrained to the source material (unreal tournament), since there are already games like TOXIKK have recreated it better.
The game could still lean more into the speedrunning/timetrials aspect because the movement is surprising intricate and fast pace once you get going.
I really loooove the announcer. The sound design in general is good.
I've played for a few hours. Even if it's in early access, the game content is very nice. This game is kind of an evolution of UT2004. I love it!
Now having played this game a bit more, I can see that it might get fun to play somewhen.
But I couldn't play an online match yet because there was not a single server listed in the server browser.
Also movement may be nice but it is just too damn slow. It's slooooooow.
I don't feel that the balance between movement speed, turning speed and bullet speed is right at all.
I was hoping for a more modern version of Xonotic, but sadly this ain't it.
I got closest to having fun with custom settings enabling Instagib and 10% Faster Movement.
Hoping for more players and even faster movement, especially I'd like to get rid of that inertia delay.
Worth the price for the bot support alone.
if you're an Unreal Tournament fan or a quake fan then you will love this! Even in it's Alpha stage it's fun, playable, has great maps, solid weapons and game play. I think I'm becoming addicted, and you will too :)
Finally a FPS that I have enjoyed since UT.
