Fantastic :)
A cute arcade shooter with an unlocked framerate. Has a lot of different characters, and a few different modes to keep you interested.
I found that game while scrolling randomly into my library and was really surprised it didn't catch my attention earlier as I'm usually very keen to play anything getting its inspiration from hero core (go play it !)
CometStriker DX is an arcade shmup where you can only shoot left/right. It also features a dash that can make you iframe through bullets / obstacles. It's very easy to pick up and play and the levels are finely crafted, one thing I liked was that the space at the entrance of each room was almost always safe, which helps think about your strategy for clearing the room before jumping into action ! It's a very good tool that can really help to learn the levels if you wanna speed through them for a high score later.
The base game is not really long (5 levels, pretty short, standard length for a shmup) but there a lot of replayability with higher difficulties, unlockable characters, unlockable game modes and a huge set of achievements ranging from slaying bosses with specific character to finishing the game without getting hurt once on max difficulty so you can really try hard and complete EVERYTHING if you want to.
About difficulty, I managed to 1cc hard difficulty on my very first try, it still was pretty tense experience and I barely made it so I guess I would have to train a bit at least to do it in very hard. Not sure I wanna go deep on this game as I wanna go further on my backlog right now but it certainly was a very fun time I would recommend if it looks like your thing !
Good game that just relies a little too heavily on dash for my taste. However, the game is a lot of fun and very charming and well worth the money.
Quick Score: 5/5
Notes: One of the best action/bullet-hell games on steam. Can't recommend it enough.
I think this does a very good job of designing enemies around your restriction of only being able to shoot left and right. I think that restriction is the main thing that sets this game apart from many other, similar games (where you would either always shoot in one direction, or have complete "twin stick" control).
The music is good and the designs are cute. It is definitely unforgiving in an "old-school" kind of way (losing upgrades when you get hit or respawn is maybe the biggest example), and I am not sure how I feel about that (I think it makes playing for score a little more fun and playing for survival a little less fun). The game definitely wants you to play on the arcade mode, instead of level-select, and I find the entire game to be a little bit too long for that, especially if you play on a difficulty where you are dying a lot.
A Fun game I feel is really underrated, worth the money and love the different unique characters. balanced enemies allow for improvement rather than throwing yourself at a target over and over, and overall a really good game!
8/10
This game has a kind interface made to help you set up and play the game.
Gameplay is well designed to make you try to perform the best under the restriction of only being able to fire in horizontal directions. It will be challenging but the game won't make you wish you can just shoot in more directions!
Normal difficulty is made to let players enjoy the game without being frustrated too much, and harder ones are made to properly challenge the players who are ready to face more.
For a game that can be beaten in one sitting, CometStriker will give you a thrilling ride.
It's a game with a lot of potential, but like so many others, doesn't respect your time as a "feature".
Buy it if it's on sale, but be aware you can't save and exit, not after chapters, not ever. You need to finish the whole thing in one go. Ridiculous.
Very good arcade shooter with many modes and characters to choose from. The artwork and the soundtrack are simply gorgeous. Highly recommended.
Iced Lizard Games’ CometStriker is a game I slept on for too long. I knew it was something I’d probably enjoy after watching someone play through hard mode. I’m not sure if it’s because of life or focus on other games but I didn’t purchase it for quite some time. After finally getting around to playing it I’m pleased to say it’s as least as good as I expected if not better.
CometStriker is an arcade style shooter complete with score/time leaderboards and achievements for getting a 1cc on each difficulty level. There is a story but I was more interested in the action than the lore so I don’t have anything to say about it. It has quite a few extras including unlockable modes and characters.
The game takes place on several different planets. Each planet is essentially a themed dungeon. The player must travel from room to room fulfilling whatever is required to proceed. This consists of killing all of the enemies or collecting keys. The characters that I tried were all armed with a weapon and a dash with invincibility frames. There are three power-ups and the character loses a powerup upon taking damage. The first hit removes the shield power-up and later instances of damage remove either the gun upgrade or the triple dash.
The scoring system is relatively simple as far as I’ve seen. It involves progressing through rooms quickly, killing enemies, and collecting gems. If the player takes damage while unshielded the score multiplier is reduced. While shielded, enemies that would normally drop a shield drop a valuable score gem. Achieving a high stage grade/score will require getting hit as few times as possible.
It’s easy to see that Iced Lizard Games tried hard or very hard to produce a great arcade style shooter, and I’d say they succeeded. Unfortunately as of writing this, it seems that CometStriker has flown under the radar of many. Don’t hesitate to give it a try!
I Went in expecting nothing more but a Rogue-like Bullet hell shooter.
Turns out it has a Rogue-like mode, a detailed story mode with branching paths, fun and unique bosses with 5 different difficulties and a wide variety of Characters to choose from (once you unlock them).
The art is very simplistic, but does its job just right. The backgrounds are amazing at times, and the music (although I wish the boss themes would be a little more pumped up) does its job quite well.
I Think that the Soundtrack is a little off when it comes to the Main boss fights. It does this, eerie-ambiant style that just doesn't make me feel like i'm in a bullet hell game. However, that does not exclude the fact that they're good songs. Just not the type I was hoping for.
The game has a really good replayability value attached to it with the different modes and characters to pick from. Not only that, but you can also put on Modifiers, that handicaps the player to the point of 1-hit K.O.
The controlls are fluid, shooting feels impactful, the enemies are Varied and Unique, music is full of an eerie vibe that generates a feeling of terror at times and the bosses are Big and Bad!
I Also have to say, one of my main reasons to why I bought the game was for the Achievements. I Wanted to have some goals to set out for. And completing a level on S-Rank is quite fun when you're looking for a challenge!
So cudos to the Devs for putting this in.
Give this one a shot, it's a fair deal for the price (especially when it's on sale).
I'm hoping to see more to this game, definitely give this one a try if you're a fan of Shooters.
Difficulties are varied and very forgiving on Easy. (So if you're new to Bullet hells, give it a try!)

CometStriker is a solid static-level score chaser with tight controls and some pretty great retro pixel art. Now I don't think I'll get super invested in this one, but all the right elements are here for those that may. The only thing to note is that you only shoot left and right; this is not a twin-stick proper.
Pros:
+Nice score chaser with tight controls
+The pixel art and ambience is neat
+If you get sucked in, you'll could get a lot of quality playtime out of this
Cons:
-While I appreciate the static levels, this could use a mode with proc gen
Neat game for a low price.
This game is a great pick-up-and-play arcade experience. There are a few simple mechanics that, when paired with the varied enemy design, ramp up nicely into a tricky bullet hell. Different characters help to add variety to replays, as do the different level layouts on different difficulty settings. A casual run will take around 40 minutes to an hour, so it's super fun to replay and try to improve your time or score. I've played through the game 7 times already and am having a blast with my attempts at speedrunning it.
At the time of writing, I did not beat the final boss (yet).
Another of Iced Lizard games, CometStriker is a game where you go through stages and shoot stuff. You move in 8 directions with the ability to "boost" - a short dash that lets you go through enemies and hazards without taking damage, and doing a little to the enemies as well. You also have the ability to shoot, though only left and right with the directions being their own buttons.
The game controls very well, which is an important thing given the challenges put in front of the player. You know how far you'll go when boosting, and when firing, you slow down if you need more percise dodging during boss fights.
The graphics are crisp and you can easily see what's the enemy/projectile and there's no confusion with hitboxes.
While the stages themselves provide reasonable challenge on higher difficulties, the bosses can kick your butt with their bullet hell patterns. Their attack order (not patterns) is randomized so each encounter is rather unique, letting you discover what the boss can do even if you get killed.
The music is upbeat, and while not an earworm you'll be humming, it provides a nice and non-intrusive experience.
this game makes me so mad!!! i want to buy a second controller, so i can throw it against the wall, just to release my anger ... but i still cant stop playing it
10/10
THIS GAME IS AWESOME. I can't say enough about it. Iced Lizard Games nailed it with this easy to pick up, hard to master masterpiece of a shooter. Everything about this game is clean and concise and can be EXTREMELY challenging if you choose to play it that way. With 4 difficulty settings you can pick a nice casual playthrough (easy), a challenge that most games you'll play won't even come to close to matching (very hard) or anywhere inbetween (although hard's no cakewalk either) :D I feel it's a pure skill based shooter. It can also cater to speedruns/highscore runs if that's your thing.
Replayability is super high for many reasons: The 4 difficulty settings, all the characters you unlock, the different modes that are available for you, or simply just bettering your time/score for the entire run or idividual planets. Oh yeah, there's more stuff too
I could keep going on and on about this game but I'll end with saying it's only taken a short amount of time for this game to be one of my favorites. It will be a game I play for a very long time and recommend to every gamer I know!
Enjoyable shooter with progressive difficulty, but always fair. A lot of replayability, simple yet challenging gameplay, great soundtrack that fits the well crafted levels. Definitely recommended.
I think this game is pretty great. A successful 1CC on Normal took about 45 minutes, and it was entertaining throughout. A lot of the variety in the game comes after your first playthrough, as you unlock a bunch of modifiers and alternate characters to make repeat playthroughs more interesting, although many difficulty options are there by default.
The room based structure reminds me a lot of Hyper Pitch Princess or Operation: Carnage. The stages are linear, with some branching paths and each world tends to host one particular theme that's introduced early on and expanded upon later. I especially like that besides an obvious mash-up in the final world these are typically hazards only found in their particular world.
The difficulty settings change a lot about the complexity of rooms and attack patterns. What's particularly nice is that you can see the places where future hazards when playing on easier difficulties, so that I know when I do play through on hard and above what I'll have to be prepared for. I mention that because it really feels like this was a game made with all difficulty settings in mind. It isn't just an arbitrary damage multiplier +/- on either side. A lot of thought has gone into a player's journey through the game; regardless of your starting skill level, there is a fitting place to start with future goals laid ahead for when your skills are honed.
I'm not great at reviews, but I enjoyed this game enough to want to encourage someone else to check it out.
I rarely write reviews but in this case I felt I needed to so that I may praise Iced Lizard on their customer service, and the second wonderful game that they have released!
First thing is first, I had a little difficulty getting this game to work. Iced Lizard reached out to me immediately and assisted me in fixing the problem. The response time was very impressive, and I greatly appreciated their assistance.
Now onto the game. This review is very much a stream of consciousness. TL:DR Get the game, it’s fun, fast, and has great replay value.
CometStriker has a great retro aesthetic and is very well polished. The levels are fast paced and have branching paths which allows for high replayability. In addition to branching paths, completing the game on certain difficulties will unlock certain characters that can completely change the way you play the game. I enjoyed it so much that I actually want to get better at it, and complete it 100%. It’s that enjoyable. If you like games made in a retro style you will absolutely love this game.
Background: Speedrunner, Retro Game enthusiast, and Dachshund Dad.
A very well polished, enjoyable game that blends the right amount of retro charm with modern game desgin knowledge.
The gameplay is challenging but the death to retry loop is quick and you don't feel like you've lost progress because of mistake. The difficulty level has enough variance that easy mode is friendly enough that even novices to the genre will find fun while very hard is... very hard.
Controls are tight (with a nice option to select Xbox or PS4 style icons), framerate is solid, music is enjoyable, and the artstyle invokes NES 8-bit era while also adding some modern charm to the enemies and boss fight.
Well worth your time!
