Rex: Another Island is a retro Platformer game.
The game starts out easy and becomes very hard later on, but with the amount of checkpoints that is forgivable. The moving platforms are incredibly buggy however and that's extremely frustrating. The graphics are very nice for retro graphics and the music is good. The game doesn't really have a story but that doesn't matter.
I have a HUGE GRIPE against this game however, as it conveniently shows your progress in collecting all coins (for a special ending/achievement) and my checklist was all messed up! At some point I got to 774 coins and every single areas completed on the checklist with a checkmark at the end (the keyboard X menu), but for some reason... the 777 coins door wouldn't open! That includes the hard to find ones and the secret one, so that's not an user error.
To continue on this very peculiar bug, I explored the entire game and found the 3 missing coins approximately 30 minutes later, in an area I had never seen before in Mountain. I found 3 coins just laying there while I'm at 45/45 completion on top of the screen. So I grabbed them and they counted as if I had never grabbed them before, my total on the X menu didn't change and it still shows I have only 773 coins, while the game now shows I have 777 instead of 774 coins! Mind-blowing bug, but I lost 1 hour in total trying to figure out this bug.
Overall, this is a very mixed review, because that bug drove me crazy.
I really like this game! It's fun to exploring the island for coins. Although I will admit, the controller support could be better. You can only use the d-pad to move, not the sticks. The buttons work fine though.
Great game. What more do you need than dinosaurs? I think it's worth the price and it also goes on sale for less than $1 so keep an eye on it. Other small games like this usually take an hour or less, but this took a pretty good chunk of time. I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing it. I hope there will be a second game sooner or later.
Got it on sale, but honestly would have been worth the 3 bucks. Great soundtrack and a distinctive platformer in its own right. I recommend picking this one up!
this game is a true delight. everything is so charming.
highly recommend to anyone that likes 2d platformers
A quick and simple game with cute graphics. It has a purple dino, it's 8-bit, what more can you ask for?
Short and sweet retro-platformer. 100% completion will probably take 1-2 hours, depending on your ability. Some people might find that too short but I personally enjoy being able to sit down for an hour and just have a good time, then be done with a game.
Rex felt like a the pixel platformer i've been looking for for a long time.
Rex reminded me of the Flash games id play as a kid after getting off school and going down to the library, it was a large sense of nastalgia to a tiem where i didnt have many responsibilities. This game was a blast to play through and recieve all 3 secret endings, in under an hour of playtime. A short but sweet game with an easy to traverse map, challenging platforming, and a simple yet straightforward task.
What i liked most about the game is that it made it obvious to you how many coins you had in each world. I find it unbareable in other games when it says im missing just one more collectible but doesnt say what area its in, this game helps you out the perfect amount to make the endgame achievable.
Overall a great game to play, i recommend it 10/10
Rex: Another Island is a side-scrolling retro platformer where you play as Rex the Trex, gathering coins through the terrain. I beat the game and 100%'d everything in about 1 hour and 30 min. I beat it using a game controller, but switched to mouse when using the menu. Difficulty is moderate in general; some small parts are pretty hard, but with enough deaths are not insurmountable.
- The various challenges are fun and gameplay is straight forward. You will not be let down if you're looking for a retro platformer. There are no bosses or attack moves. It's just a friendly romp coin collector type of game.
- The music is really catchy.
- It's got a Trex!
- There are badges. Whole three of them. One for each Trex toe.
- The game is short and sweet.
- There's no map. BUT... The game is so short it doesn't really need one. If you hit B you can zoom out, but you can still die or walk around when you do this, so be warned.
In short: for 3 bucks Rex: Another Island is well worth the enjoyment if you're looking for a retro sidescrolling platformer to entertain you, or a quick game to play between longer games. It's got all the classic hallmarks of oldschool platformers. You've got coins, gems, and many death traps in between. On top of that, Rex is a pretty awesome trex.
Ah, PixelJam, what can I say about these guys except I'll always support their work. I've been a fan for a very long time both of their games and their artwork for a number of years now, and this little game of a purple dino collecting coins and gems was a nostalgic blast.
Tight controls for both keyboard and controller, and a beautiful simplistic look to it, and lovely music to go with it all. There was challenge without wanting to rip your hair out or smash your controller across the screen, but still a sense of accomplishment for when you got past a particularly tricky spot.
Another little Gem form the Pixel Jam team. I would recommend this for anyone that wants to have a little challenge and has a hour or two to kill.
Exploration driven medium-core (not too hard, not too easy) platformer Rex: Another Island was just delightful. Backgrounds and environments, obstacles, and awesome music make exploration engaging, while quality of life features like frequent checkpoints and well-placed and paced teleport beacons take away the discouraging parts of exploration (i.e. progress-less backtracking). The game-feel of this game was amazing, and was definitely aided with Xpad and Dpad controller support. A compact, perfectly proportioned package, Rex runs at a good 2 hours for all 3 endings, and I loved every minute. I would love to see another. I'd give this a 9/10 with tons of confidence.
I thought I would leave a Negative review for this game since there aren't any as of yet, and someone might want to see a different opinion. This isn't a bad game, it's just not much of a game. We played through the first 5 or so levels in 20 minutes and encountered no game mechanics other than platform jumping and collecting coins. We saw a total of 2 enemies, both of which were simple move-and-avoid enemies. Other than that, no bosses, no power ups, nothing but jump, avoid spikes, collect coins. I would call this a half developed game.
A very enjoyable MS-DOS inspired collectathon-platformer. I'd recomend to anyone how likes this style of game.
Fast and fun collect-a-thon featuring a sweet pink dino who doesn't want to eviscerate you with his massive dewclaws. Some pleasantly tricky sections, with long, simple segments in between that let you feel like the man for a while. A world that feels huge, but in which you can't get lost.
A bite-sized joy of a game that emphasizes the fun of collection, with none of the headache that comes from canvasing every dark crevice for that one last doohickey.
Beat it with 100% completion in an hour and some change, it's short and incredibly sweet. Everything is well drawn, and the music is a big plus as well. It can be as simple of a game of making it from point A to point B, or you can go for the collectathon route and try and get everything; just all depends on how you want to play it. Has a lot of cute design 'teaching' moments without actually ever spelling the mechanics directly out, besides the most basic controls. I highly recommend it at any price, preferably the full price for a well designed, thought out, tight controlling and above all adorable platformer.
Great short and sweet platformer! Great Level Design and a nice challenging game, but still fair! I would recommend to completionists and speedrunners and platformer fans. 10/10
A really good platformer that all takes place on one giant map/level, but still has several distinct biomes. You can beat the game in just a few minutes if you know where you're going, but this is a game built for replayability and speedruns. There's three endings- 1) collect all the gems and make it to a special exit, 2) collect all the coins and make it to a special exit, and 3) make it to the 'normal' ending exit. The gems/coins exit are considerably more difficult, as you might expect.
The controls work well, though occasionally they're a bit punishing- you really need pixel-perfect jumps in a few spots. But it never feels unfair. Music is good, but you can turn it off if desired. Graphics are nothing that will blow you away but they serve the game well and have a great retro feel.
This isn't just another crappy 2d platformer to idle for cards, this is actually a good game.
edit: 11/28/2017: A few more notes: The devs are really nice people, the game's music is actually STELLAR (there's hints of Donkey Kong Country here), and more players need to be checking out this game, particularly speedrunners. It's a real gem.
This is exactly my kind of game, and fortunately it's a GOOD one to boot. Well worth the hour and the price. :)
Finally the game is on the mac :) It is really a cute game. I loved every moment while playing. Although at some parts, it was quite challenging (specially to get all the 3 endings). The world design is great, every part is calculated. Although all the obstacles and enemies are not changing much but the designers always find new ways to use them.I totally recommend this game :)
A charming and straightforward little platformer - an enjoyable hour or two can be spent exploring and coin-collecting.
