Fun older game, plays well, would recommend the entire game series. The just cause series has huge open maps, many missions to complete, and so much more for you to do. 10/10 hands down

the 1280 x 960 part is to correct the developers oversight. Old games are 4:3 which is why they only have 4:3 resolutions to choose from. However there is one 5:4 resolution listed inside this games options that is 1280x1024. this might be a mistake because 1280x1024 is a 5:4 aspect ratio and will slightly stretch your game (you can test it with screenshots, with any proper 4:3 resolution your minimap circles will be perfect circles, but if you choose 1280x1024 they become slightly oblate, because the game is being slightly warped to fit the abnormal 5:4 aspect ratio)

i googled it, the only reason 1280x1024 exists is because they were common in tv's in the early 2000s

look on the wikipedia of screen resolutions, 1280x1024 is listed ALONE in the 5:4 category with no other resolutions, interesting.

1280x960 is a correct 4:3 resolution and im shocked its not included in the options.

I really love the Just Cause franchise but I just couldn't play this game like others.

-There is no saving option, you have to finish a main task and afterwards game asks if you wanna save it or not. If you die while in the main task you have to restart from a while back which sucks most of the time cuz fights and long roads are just not worth it.

-Driving is a bit sketchy, after getting some speed vehicles become weightless hence they kinda start flying and become unstable.

-Your own Agent vehicles get stuck in the ground which sucks again since now you have to go to a main road to carjack which means a ton of walking mostly.

-Side missions have no meaning no story no nothing you just go around shooting stuff, I mean it would be fun if it was like Just Cause 3 but the reasons above make it a chore.

-Grappling gun is sketchy you can only use it on vehicles which there ain't much mostly expect crowded places like cities but map is mostly consisting of intercity roads, and it is difficult to use as you might expect from a 2006 game.

So I watched the storyline on youtube and just dropped the game, If you wanna give it a shot do it but don't expect much from it

An absolutely horrendous experience.
This game will frustrate you in every way possible. From not being able to alt tab, to not being able to save until you complete a main story mission. Doesn't matter how many side missions you have done, if you don't do a main mission you can't save the game. (Unless you basically unlock it, then you have to go all the way to a safehouse to save anyway. If you die, be ready to lose progress.) The driving, the grappling hook, basically everything is broken in this game. I am trying to force myself to beat it for the sake of hoping i eventually find something positive, but story wise so far you can start on 2 and you won't miss anything.

Make sure to change your properties on steam to your resolution using the prompt provided below (set the numbers to whatever your specific resolution is.) Doing so will allow you to enjoy this mess of a game a little bit more.

It's really not a very good game. The gameplay is repetitive, the side missions are fetch quests (so also repetitive), the story is . . . minimal, if I'm being kind, and while it's still rather addicting despite the tedium, some sadistic, thoughtless jack*ss thought it would be a good idea to use a checkpoint save system in a massive open world game, so most of your time will be spent repeating the same boring mission over an over. Oh, and you can't save at all if you're on a main mission, even at one of your safe houses. So stupid. Also, there is zero reason to explore this world. You can't interact with the inhabitants, you can't enter or interact with the buildings, you can't interact with the wildlife because there is none, you can't really do anything except move from one pre-populated waypoint to another, doing one of only a handful of things over an over and over, listening to some of the worst environmental sound design I've ever heard in a AAA game.

Buy and play if you're a fan of Just Cause series or want to see where the franchise begins, otherwise skip. It is buggy, glitchy and illogical, but at least it gave us Just Cause 2 and eventually Just Cause 3, so there's that. As for my playtime being 1.6 hours - well, I couldn't take it any longer with all of Rico's attempts to die at his earliest convenience from almost anything you can encounter in the game.

i mean its decent i had to install a mod to get full screen but was worth it, I got it to work on controllers not 100% have to use the keyboard to quit the game, but if you like older games i suggest you try this.

also why is the grapple hook so a unbelievably terrible, you can only use it on a car.

GTA on an island with a focus on politics/factions. It is fun, BUT :

Not horrible at first but not particularly good or interesting. I was a bit curious to see if the game would improve and it did until it got much worse again and I quit.

1) Big event : when I played the cocaine truck theft mission and failed it twice, I instantly uninstalled the game. Reinstalled it a few hours later to try again and it wasn't so bad after all but even after beating the mission quite easily, I can say that the game is badly designed (too simplistic).
- In that mission, if you decide to ignore the cars shooting at you, you will fail the mission by getting blown up. If you leave your truck to get rid of the enemies, more cars will show up 15 seconds later. My point is that there isn't really a way to strategize in this game and the gunplay is not bad but also very simple. It kind of takes the fun out of the game. In other games where shooting is at the center, either combat itself will be more complicated and interesting OR the strategies you employ will be. In any case, Just Cause is not bad, but it's clunky and in 2024, you can easily find other games that are similar and better. Just Cause 2 is apparently better so I'll try that one eventually.

2) *** *** Big event #2 *** *** : now that mission is miserable. It's a mission where you gotta kill a man followed by a convoy. Turns out he's already reached his destination and after already spending some time reaching the '' first target '', you have to drive on a dirt mountain for literally 10-20 minutes and where the driving is so bad that I would say it's almost unbearable and unplayable. I ended up dying after being shot at by the helicopters and all the enemy soldiers for these 15-20 minutes. That mission was so poorly designed (the main issue really is the driving though) that it made me give up. Good bye Just Cause.

Rest of my review :

The game has obviously aged a lot (not talking about graphics), but it's not unplayable. One of the other problems is how long it takes to travel to missions/locations even though there are ways to travel faster. Could be worse, but it doesn't help.

Driving is exciting when at high speed, but only when going in a straight line. Doesn't control well when trying to steer left or right. Basically, the driving is stiff and it's too easy to lose control of your vehicle. It results in funny situations though (when cops charge into your car for example).

Aiming and controls are kinda clunky. Sometimes you receive aim assist (when on a vehicle with a machine gun) and it's way too easy. Sometimes you don't and it's hard to aim if the enemy moves.
- Gunplay is mediocre but satisfying I guess. The physics of the bodies make shooting at enemies satisfying and funny. Enemies die quickly as well so that helps.
- Enemies almost miss every shot they take at you and the AI is OK. Worse AI than GTA 4. I didn't play GTA 3 or Vice City so IDK about those and I don't remember the AI in San Andreas.

Like I already said, there is not much strategy in how to play the game. For example, if you decide to do something really stupid, you'll get yourself killed probably. Otherwise, I doubt you'll die if you're an OK gamer. Other example : liberation missions are basically you blowing up a few walls and shooting a few people. It's just too simple and not that interesting. Not bad, but just not good either.

Cutscenes dialogues and characters are all right.

Switching weapons at the Safehouse is badly made and confusing - the HUD doesn't help.

***Other details : this game is crazy! While doing side missions for a guerilla faction, there's an helicopter following me + cops telling me '' stop right there citizen - this is the policia '' constantly and literally firefights going on everywhere, cars blowing up everywhere, sound bugs as well I think?... This game is a mess lol. ***Also, some of the side missions I start end before I even reach the location of the mission because the target gets killed before I even reach it lol.

Only buy and play if you’re a fan of the series and want to see its roots; otherwise, there are better Just Cause games out now and better open-world third-person shooters available from that time period.

This game has aged poorly. I have played Just Cause 2 already and wanted to go back to its roots to see what it evolved from. It’s cool to be able to see that all—they really differentiated this game from just being a GTA knockoff by taking the GTA formula but applying it to a rebel overthrowing a government with CIA help. It’s a great idea, and I’m sure that it was fun in its day. However, while I usually do some of the side quests, collectibles, and mini games in open-world games, I found myself playing straight through the campaign (about 21 total if you count the last one as three parts) without doing anything else because the game felt kind of empty when I wasn’t actively involved in a mission.

The Positives:
-The thing that I love about this series is that you have the ability to summon things—no need to run for 10 minutes to go find something you like when you can just call in a vehicle and have it airdropped. You can also fast travel to the next mission. Those are amazing quality-of-life features that I appreciate. It came in especially handy at any time where you get frustrated in the game because it speeds you up to the next fun thing.

-There is a good diversity of weapons, though I will say that the limited ammunition for anything other than the stock weapons that your enemies have means that you can’t do much with them.

-The vehicles were interesting—I love the realistic nature that there are cars of all different ages and conditions because it’s a third-world country. They also have agency logos on all the military-style equipment they give you, which is amusing.

-The cutscenes looked pretty good for their time. The characters had personality, and the storyline built up from simple disruption to the final overthrow.

-The game does not hold your hand. This is both a pro and a con (which I’ll cover later), but the pro side is that you just grab things and figure them out as you go. I think I was learning the controls all the way until the end of the game because there was always a new weapon, vehicle, piece of equipment, or game mechanic being introduced. I’ll save you some trouble (skip this if you don’t want a hint) and tell you that the difficulty of the final mission jumps up to 11 where the security of the island is insanely strong and yet they drop you with a dinky boat that will get slaughtered if you approach. It takes minutes to go get a helicopter with a machine gun, and you’ll still likely die. I think the game wanted you to hijack one of the helicopters blowing you up around the perimeter. The controls make it difficult, but I finally mastered it and got one with missiles so I could take everything out to get past Part 1 of the final mission.

-Once I got the controls down, the run-and-gun combat wasn’t too bad. They gave you the ability to survive major gunfights as long as you keep moving. That gave the game a sense of constant motion because that’s what you have to be in to not die.

-If you’re interested in cruising through the game just for gaming history, it only took me about 6 hours (in-game timer) to beat by doing almost exclusively missions (I did enough side quests to take over two island areas and gave up after the quests were all the same and I didn’t see a noticeable difference in my progress or abilities after completing them). I like short games, and this doesn’t overstay its welcome—I beat in about 3 evenings of a couple of hours each.


The Negatives:
-This game is very buggy. At one point, I would enter a tank during this one mission, and it started bugging out and launched thousands of feet into the air and in the wrong direction to the next checkpoint. Fortunately, I was so high up that I could just jump out, use my parachute, and cruise for 3-4 minutes to complete it, which is how the strengths of this game make up for the weaknesses sometimes. But you’ll experience bugs throughout that will kill you or thwart your mission progress, from being thrown hundreds of yards to not being able to make your motorbike go forward.

-I couldn’t use a controller for this game because there’s no sensitivity adjustment in the options and so the reticle would just fly around the screen, but keyboard and mouse worked just fine.

-The game was a little vague sometimes with what you had to do. The mini-map helped you know where to go, but then once you were there you had to figure it out. One time, I had to destroy crops but didn’t know how. I ended up using the enemies grenades and vehicles in conjunction with my grenades to destroy them, but it took over a half-hour for that one mission (without deaths). There are canisters that I think you’re supposed to drive over and spread out to get them all—and I think there might be a flame weapon or something somewhere—but I couldn’t get it to do any more damage than a grenade and so I just used that. One mission requires you to blow up an entrance into a building and doesn’t really tell you that (how would you know to do that???), while another one tells you to stop an enemy but you don’t have the vehicle, weapons, etc. to do so. That last one forced me to get creative, which was cool, but most of the time it was a tad annoying.

-There’s not much in the game. They made a huge island with not much in it. It was early days of open-world gaming, and they were going for a huge island to differentiate from GTA et al, but it’s a whole lot of nothing with a few cars, people, etc. between villages, military bases, or rebel stations. The side quests were all “go to military installation, wreak havoc, and raise a flag” in nature or “go get X person or thing and return to the quest-giver” missions. This is what I disliked about Just Cause 2, and it’s even worse here when combined with the fact that there’s not a lot to do (JC2’s graphics and gameplay were so improved that it compensated for this).

-The health system was annoying. The positives were that you had stations you could go to for health, weapons, a vehicle, and saves…but then you’d leave and just about anything would knock out 75% of your health in about 2 minutes: getting hit by a car; your car exploding; you jumping out and falling too far; you getting shot at by someone while you’re supposedly driving innocently; having 5 people come out of nowhere, careen into your vehicle, and shoot you half to death while obstructing your vehicle (if anything is in your way, your vehicle stops dead). Fortunately, the recovered roughly 20% of your health if you got away, and if you keep running around you’ll almost never die by bullets—something has to explode, you have to get stuck or stop, or you have to fall or get hit by a car to die.

Overall, I didn’t care for the game for the most part but did enjoy some parts—especially the part at the end with the jet. I like these kinds of games so managed to make it fun and I’m glad I could just complete the missions to beat it and be done with it in a reasonable time, but I couldn’t go 30 minutes without experiencing at least one or two bugs that messed up my progress. Saving often and learning how to either avoid the bugs or have them work to your advantage will help. If all else fails, just grab a helicopter with missiles and blow everything up (as long as you keep moving and don’t let SAMs or other helicopters get a clean shot at you, you’re invincible).

My recommendation: Play the 21 missions if you like the series to say you played it; otherwise, go play GTA3-era games or Just Cause 2 for better experiences of this genre.

Shit game, very badly balanced. Health is shaved off constantly and when you fall over, your dumbass character has a hard time getting up while the npc cops keep peppering you with bullets. Hate games that are hard not because the levels are carefully thought out and the missions are challenging, but are instead hard because the layout of the level is terrible and makes no sense due to bad design and janky controls. Save your money for something else. Don't bother copping it on sales either, because that would be like be like buying a steaming pile of shit with makeup on. Slightly improved, but still shit.

This game is just incredible

This is a review from someone who only has experience with Just Cause 2, starting with the demo back in the PS3 days.

Would I suggest this game? Sure, but it should be known that this game is... Rough around the edges, no joke. This game has many bugs, and so long as you can deal with that, then you should enjoy it just fine. This game heavily reminds me of the Mercenaries games by Pandemic Studios, being able to use very heavy weaponry, hyjacking even the likes of tanks and helicopters. The coolest aspect of the game is that you have the grappling hook, that being said, it is NOT like it is in Just Cause 2... Just Cause 2 upgraded it into a HUGELY useful tool, to attach against the environment and zip around to even climb buildings, or even to attach 2 things together as well.

The bugs, however, are very strange... You cannot use the steam overlay with this game, as it really doesn't like it, let alone like you responding to friends while using it either. There was also a time that the game lagged and crashed during a mission out of nowhere, and my laptop is more than capable of running this title. The game also will become invisible if you tab-alt out of it to look at other things, and you'll have to restart it by then. The last notable bug I've found, involves the truck vehicle you can order via the agency, which seems like a fun ride, but it REFUSES TO MOVE. I have yet to find a fix about this issue that even works, so do note that this unlock is... Sadly worthless.

I still suggest this game, just know that it is not the most stable of games... If you understand this, go ahead and enjoy an underrated open-world game that is better than GTA and Saints Row.

Queria muito ter gostado desse jogo, mas tudo nele é tão maçante que tira toda a diversão da experiência. Não sei como Just Cause se tornou uma franquia com jogos muito melhores e muito mais divertidos, mas com certeza o primeiro foi o começo bem conturbado. Recomendo darem uma chance para a franquia começando do Just Cause 2 em diante, mas se quiserem começar pelo primeiro, já advirto que não é um jogo que envelheceu bem.
Inimigos são esponjas de bala, open-world maçante e irritante, pois tudo te atrapalha e o mapa é desnecessariamente grande, levando até meia-hora pra ir até a missão. Progressão confusa, levando algumas horas para entender o que é pra fazer, e os veículos possuem uma física horrível!
