Great game. Not as emotional as the original Mafia, but still very worth playing.
One of the best games I've ever played, even though the game wasn't fully finished. It's a shame, because it could have been the best game in the world.
The humor is hilarious and the story and dialogues are just as good. Stellar.
Mafia 2's story is great, most characters are well written and the missions are good enough. Difficulty is not that harsh like it was in the previous game, although you can make it tough with the highest difficulty and also with realistic driving and there are still a few missions which can give a bit of a headache. The atmosphere is still very good and feels authentic, thanks to the soundtrack as well. Graphics look great, even though the game is more than 10 years old. Controls are fine, you need to get used to the driving and some of the key bindings but it's alright.
However, this game has its own problem on modern systems and most times it can crash a lot or the graphics can glitch. To fix this, you need to use the 4GB patch from here, and patch the mafia2.exe at .../steamapps/common/Mafia 2/pc. After that, all of those issues should get fixed (it got for me) and now Mafia 2 uses 4 GB virtual memory instead of 2 GB.
But this issue is not really the game's fault, but there are a few things which could have been better in Mafia 2, and one of them is the AI. Overall, the friendly AIs in gun fights are not doing too much or anything, meanwhile the enemies (especially in later chapters) will aimbotting and shoot you on sight, depending what weapon they have they can push you without trying to protect themselves. The police AI is also questionable, because sometimes they don't react to you if you are speeding right in front of them, but sometimes they notice you when you are speeding behind them. Or they can lose you in places where you are open to find or easy to find you but sometimes they can magically see you through walls and also they are ruthless in car chases... they are really inconsistent in general.
Then, there were parts in the story which felt overdone, too long and one of them for example is the prison parts. I get it that the story needs to build up Leo and Vito's connection, but this part was just too long without much interesting part for me.
There is the checkpoint system, which works fair and square but sometimes checkpoints are too far from each other on certain missions which makes them difficult to complete if you die a lot in them, although this part is more to the challenging aspect rather than a problem for me.
Mafia 2 has DLCs as well, which are additional cars and clothing. There are even 3 DLC stories to follow which are standalone from the story mode, which sounds exciting on paper.
Betrayal of Jimmy
This is basically an open world mode for Mafia 2 with a bunch of missions and to give an "arcade experience for the player", playing with a guy who looks like a budget Mr. Clean, but his name is Jimmy. Jimmy is a gun for hire, and in this DLC he will work for Sal Gravina on the Italian Mafia side and for Tam Brodie who is leading his Irish Brodie gang. Jimmy's job is to help them to eliminate their competition in a total of 24 missions.
This DLC has nothing to do with the main story (although some of it's missions are played on key locations from the main story), doesn't contain any character from there neither, which is not big of a deal, but to be fair this one has no real story or characters (Jimmy is deep as a character like a cardboard) to follow and the missions are also gets repetitive and some of them are really difficult, and on top of that the missions has a time limit to complete, and if you miss that you have to restart the whole mission, and some of them are takes a decent time to start it anyway. Not even mentioning that some mission's mechanics are not really working properly, for example missions which include cars with explosives in it and you are supposed to drive them carefully, they are never exploding for any contact... at least they never did in my playtime. Difficulty will come from either you having barely enough time to finish the objectives, or you have to deal with a bunch of enemies and also have to deal with the police continuously. And what is the craziest thing to me is that this DLC is almost as long as the main story mode, this takes 4-5 hours to playthrough, and the story mode is around 5-6 hours which is really crazy to think about.
In the end, the DLC tries to connect the dots and gives the illusion for an epilogue on this non existent story, where Jimmy gets set up when he goes for his reward when the police catches him with drug in his reward car, he will be sent to prison but promises to himself to take his revenge on those who set him up, on his former employers.
And to explain it further, throughout the whole DLC the player collects points from missions and from the free play part in order to get a good placement in the leaderboards, and that's basically the "arcade experience".
Honestly the whole thing is just a big miss, and has the most annoying game elements of Mafia 2. Do not play it.
Jimmy's Vendetta
It continues what the last DLC started story wise (even though that was not much to begin with), and in this one Jimmy wants to take his revenge on those who wronged him in the past in 28 missions now.
This DLC is basically the same as the previous one, except that Jimmy's Vendetta is more forgiving with the difficulty. It still has some quite difficult missions, but most of them are manageable and the time limits are not too bad either.
The final mission sets on a new place on the map, so that's a bit of a change and something nice to see, although enemies can occasionally wallbang you here.
In the end of the DLC Jimmy deals with the gang leader and head of the Italian family, however Jimmy goes for the Judge as well, who allegedly managed both groups and sent Jimmy to prison. Jimmy kills the Judge as well and that ends the Vendetta.
This one is a little bit bearable and takes 4 hours to playthrough, but there is no reason to play this one at all.
Joe's Adventure
This DLC focuses on Joe and fills the plot holes in the main story starting from Chapter 5, which sounds good for those who are interested more about the game's story. It basically shows how Joe meets with Eddie Scarpa and how he makes connections with his family.
The introductory mission is really good and fun, fits perfectly with the Mafia 2 missions from the story mode. It gives high hopes for the player after the two DLC...
but other than that, I think this is by far the worst DLC to play. The gameplay and even most missions are the same as in the other DLCs, except that there are occasionally proper story missions, but they are not that well made as the first one was. The reason I really don't like this one is the difficulty, which ramps up massively here. More active and annoying police, really picky mission states, difficult timed missions, aimbotting enemies and missions where you need to know ahead what will happen, otherwise you are done.
Getting through the 25 missions that this DLC contains is painful, it took me 5 hours in total.
So all in all, the base Mafia 2 game is fun and alright it has some points which could be annoying or could have been done better, but all in all fine. Any other additional content except the clothing and the cars are horrible tho, so only play the base game which I recommend. 30€ with the Definitive Edition sounds a bit expensive, I would go with 20€ max for the two games.

I had to "mode" the game to get it to run>tecknikly its just a aplicashion/program that lets the exe/game use more ram.but basicly it lets it run and run beter and smother and be beter.basicly just do it so you can literly play and progress thro the game.also no it dusent mess with steam achevments so you still get achivments.thats y I sed "Mode" be cuz its basicly not a mod its just sumthing to get the games to run sooth and in general espeshily on modern sistems.so basicly a must for almost evryone.you cold let this tarnish the game but I dont I just thik its becusz its a old game and it wasint dezined to play or run on modern hardwher and I dont think you sholfd let it hert the game.besides sume screen taring or sum buges comes with the agge of the game and newer hardwher.the game looks great and for a 2009/2010s game it still holds up vishily and game play wise It looks beter than the xbox 360 vershion of the game and that looks pritty good to begin with so the this vershion looks so much better ahd ovisly bing on the pc brings more posibilitys loke vishiwell inhancments and Mod's.the story is good and the shooting and aming and combat of the game is good and the cars handiling is ok.the music is a great banger simaler to the likes of Fallout Games radio and as well as GTA to the radio comershals and both are simaler.and all this lets to a asmospiric and emersave game and setting the seting the time piorid all this macks you feel like you are the caricter and conect with the caricters and youll loose lose time while playing this and mostlily garinteed losts of fun while playing. Terrible, non stop crashing
This game can either be the most enjoyable thing you've ever played or make you want to destroy everything in front of you from how absolutely broken the physics can be in some missions. From enemies that can shoot you through walls and one hit you if you happen to be unlucky enough to get some douche with a shotgun or magnum shooting you through a wall, to getting gangbanged by cops during a routine van hijacking in Joe's adventure, this game has it all. It has the perfect mix of great story telling and absolutely broken gameplay to piss you off bad enough to swear off of it for a day or two, but to drag yourself back and continue because even though you've played through it, you want to see it play out.
Also can we talk about how crap the "saving marty" mission is? screw the bombers but most importantly screw Marty im glad he got shot in the hotel because holy crap. You're telling me a hunk of meat like Joe cant pick marty's scrawny self up and carry him?
Overall 10/10 I'll probably finish Joe's adventure when I decide to come back in a day.

One of my favourite single player games. Story is great and graphics still hold up to this day. Would recommend.
It is honestly probably my favourite single player story-mode game. I love everything about this game and how clean and polished everything is.
I love especially the traditional 30s,40s vibe within some of the characters. They did pull it off really good.
No game ever stood up for me as much as Mafia 2 did.
There is attachment to the characters as well , you feel a genuine connection. Vito, Joe and Henry felt like real people to me.
I've been replaying this game countless of times because I never got tired.
The playboy collectibles are also pretty unique to what we are usually used to see in games.

The classic version is better, everything about this game is great, it's like gta but, better. 20/10
40's and 50's GTA, still stands up in 2024, if, expectedly, a bit outdated in terms of graphics.
I know is the Mafia II Classic but sadly is unplayeble, lots of crashes and lags. Its sad but if you want to play Mafia II I will recommend Definitive Edion.

Mafii II mám rád i přes její velké nedostatky. Tuhle hru poznamenal její ne zcela dobrý vývoj, který se potýkal s mnoha problémy, a proto nebyla nikdy zcela dodělána, a tak ve finální hře chybí mnoho věcí.
Příběh
Příběh Mafie II je mnoha lidem dobře známý. Hlavní protagonista Vito Scaletta se po službě ve druhé světové válce vrací domů do Empire Bay. Potýká se s nalezením svého místa a snahou pomoci své rodině s finančními problémy, Vito je rychle vtažen do světa organizovaného zločinu. Jeho starý přítel Joe Barbaro ho uvede do podsvětí a Vito se začíná propracovávat nahoru v mafiánské hierarchii.
Hra se odehrává ve 40. a 50. letech a zachycuje podstatu této éry svými detailními prostředími a autentickým soundtrackem. Vitoova cesta je plná ambicí, loajality a zrady, jak se pohybuje nebezpečným světem mafie v Empire Bay. Během hry čelí Vito mnoha výzvám a činí těžká rozhodnutí, která ovlivní jeho osud i osudy těch kolem něj.

Simply one of the best games I've ever played, if you want a great story, a fun time, and maybe a little challenge, just play Mafia 2, you don't need a great system to play this, that's also a big plus, the ambient is made at perfection, also a super good soundtrack, so if you have $20, buy Mafia trilogy, you will never regret that.

Good game, Joe is a great character, along with Vito. I would suggest playing the classic first before the definitive edition of this game as there are subtle changes between the two games, but not as many changes between Mafia and Mafia: Definitive Edition.
It was a good game. I really enjoyed it. Back when it came out....However ,with what Steam is offering now...other then RDR2 that does not work very well anymore , is all " insert" what ever garbage name you want to put in.
Mafia 2 is a game I have only good memories of, and it will always be in my top 5 games of all time. The amazing atmosphere, memorable characters, and captivating story combined with enjoyable gameplay create a fantastic package. Therefore, I can only recommend this successor to the already incredible first Mafia game.

Does not work at all on windows 10 anymore which is a shame i have tried every troubleshooting method out there i guess i will have to stick with the definitive edition :(
Plays very fine, just cap the framerate to 100 FPS and everything is gonna be fine until you reach chapter 13 which the game decided to crash before triggering story cutscene and i switched to DE to finish the game, i guess it's fault was W11 but i'll try to play the game on W10 if it's that

Doesn't really need to be open world. But it's a good story to chew through.
Remarkable characters, engaging storytelling, and immersive gaming experience! Never a dull moment. Driving cars in this game can get a bit wobbly and somewhat exaggerated whenever you make a turn, so it can require more exposure and handling of the controls before you get used to it. I remembered playing the demo as a kid back in 2011, and first thoughts were already high. I tell you, this game DELIVERED!
way more fun than the first game but doesn't have as good of a story still goat. remaster sucks tho

It's alright. Map exploration is okay, would've been lot better if there was an option to save. Story is good, it carries the game. Good source to watch old playboy models(They're bad af, 100% worth it).
Game crashes to desktop at the beginning of chapter 2. Bought the trilogy and enjoyed the first one, but couldn't play the next two. My refund request was denied, probably because I played the entire first game which is understandable. but FYI you might want to avoid buying this as part of a bundle just in case it's unplayable for you, too. A shame too, because this one was my favorite out of the three back in the day!
Great game. This port is hot dogwater. Don't buy it, it just straight up doesn't run for more than 2 minutes without crashing.
Since I couldn't find a good list of fixes anywhere, I'll drop what worked for me (so far) here:
1. Turn off PhysX
2. Open Nvidia Control Panel > Configure Surround, PhysX. Change PhysX Processor to CPU.
3. Download 4gb patch ( https://ntcore.com/4gb-patch/ )
4. Run 4GB patch on mafia2.exe (Steam>Steamapps>common>Mafia II>pc)
5. Finished
The fact the devs can't do this themselves for their own game they're selling for money is pathetic.
Rating: 7/10
Mafia 2 starts off strong with engaging gameplay and a compelling setting. The gunplay and driving are enjoyable, and the game captures the era effectively.
However, the story loses its impact in the later chapters, and the ending didn’t feel as emotional or memorable as Mafia 1 Definitive Edition. While the game is enjoyable overall, it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor.
