This game is underrated. Excellent story line and game play. It does need a few community patches to make it work just right. Highly recommended.
eternal classic, even with bad ports and frame rate drops still very fun to play and remember my ps3 era lol
Best GTA game with beautiful sad story, deep characters, fun gameplay and features. As always - UNPLAYABLE without mods and tweaks. Multiplayer is killed by greedy s*ckers, fu rockstar. However, thanks to community, you can still enloy this masterpiece. To be honest, I would not recommend to buy it and give developer your money for broken game with deleted content, but you must give this game a chance (you know what i mean)
I was getting the fatal D3D error and could not launch the game for awhile, spent long hours searching for a solution, and finally decided to re-install windows (actually installed fresh copy of 11 - had 10 before)
The game now runs and I am very thankful! Would recommend this game, I believe it has the better story (than GTA5)
Port is terrible, just play on console or downgrade with mods.
Great game! one issue, it crashes a lot.
it is a good game if you can optimize it with mods
Requires an internet connection for activation, an account with a unique username, and a separate launcher.
I suspected this is the last Rockstar game I would ever own, but this confirms it. All that for a 16 year old game that's played completely offline? INSANITY.
The only reason I haven't refunded it already is that I've seen gameplay clips that make me think this was probably the last good single player game Rockstar made (this or RDR+RDR2, from what I hear). And I used to play all their games back in the day, stopping after San Andreas. And it was only $6 on sale. Even so, I'm considering refunding it and finding it cheaper elsewhere, because this is TRASH BEHAVIOR from a now TRASH COMPANY.
I guess the motivation here is lower barrier to entry to GTA 5/Online, but I already know to avoid that pile of dung by a developer who takes previously free content (tons of cars) and locks it behind a paywall.
The more I think about this the more sure I am that giving even $6 to these people is too much. The people who used to make Rockstar good probably aren't even there anymore.
To be extra-clear: I'm not just griping about the developer going completely off the rails. They absolutely have. But the negative rating is specifically about this specific title and them requiring a separate launcher with a separate online account for a 16 year old offline game.
Great game! but needs a lot of fixing to get it even to launch
Best game in the franchise, one of the best games I've ever played, It just does everything right.
If you perform the downgrade, lock the framerate and refresh rate to 60 (to fix the broken cutscene cameras) and setup GFWL (to make the multiplayer work), It literally feels like you're in the 2000's again.
This is just an example of how modding communities truly keep games alive.
Don't bother paying for this Rockstar Launcher wrapped garbage. Just download the game from green store for free and do all the fixing and restoration there. If you try to play this game with fixes on steam it will break once they update the game and there is nothing you can do about it.
bro i have to pirate this shit because rockstar has fucking locked me out of it because my launcher account is linked to an old, unusable email, despite the fact that i've bought the game on steam. fuck you rockstar.
should be able to buy the game and play it. shouldn't have to install a "fixer" in the first place. ridiculous you have to jump through hoops just to be able to walk out of nikos apartment with 60fps.
Hello everyone, I just bought this game recently. I have no problems in game except for one thing, Save Files. I cannot save a game whenever I try, it just says that the social club is failed yet I bought it here legally. How to fix it please comment
spent 6 hours trying to get this game to work
other than that, it really is the best gta game to ever exist (make sure you install fusionfix and dxvk tho).
This game is so unbelievably un-optimized and messed up in every way imaginable. This is hands down the worst PC port of all time and that is a feat within itself, even with modern technology and graphics cards the game is barely playable, the only exception to this is that you follow what basically every person in the universe who has played this piece of shit says and downgrade it and use mods that do Rockstars job of fixing it so you feel like you didn't waste your money. Steam should honestly remove this game from the store just for how messed up everything is, you shouldn't be able to sell a game that pretty much doesn't work unless you mod it and yet it blows my mind to say that it was even worse on launch, this is Rockstars "fixed" version. 3/10. Can't even take Roman bowling
- Got stuck in the garage of a cut scene on the mission where you steal Lyles car because it wouldn't open no matter how many times I restarted the mission and had to google a fix for it
- The aiming is so bad that if you are aiming near people your reticle will get stuck about mid level and won't go up or down which makes shooting anything impossible half the time but its a good thing NPCs can't aim for shit either
- Graphical glitches everywhere
- Screen tearing constantly
- Cars are so slow at turning you are almost on the sidewalk half the time just trying to turn a corner
- NPC aim is so bad that you can often times just stand still and they can't hit you
- I have had to restart missions a large number of times because of people falling through the map or getting stuck on objects
- You have to set traffic below 50 or else it lags your game no matter the graphics card and they will also start to drive erratically and swerve into everything around them including you which just freaks them out more and makes it even worse
- The graphics are somehow worse than the ps3 version
- Shadows are broken and have bad quality
- They took out a lot of good songs and radio channels from the original version
- If your FPS isn't capped at 60 the game runs into a lot more problems
- Missions that used to be considered challenging are now a joke because most of the time enemies stand still, can't aim, or walk right at you and just stare at you
- Mini games like Bowling on PC don't really work and neither do the controls for it
- Random fatal errors that crash the game
- Flying helicopters feels like walking on eggshells
Game #47 of My Backlog Clearing Journey
Status: Completed
I finally completed the main story today, something I should have done back in high school. At the time, I couldn’t finish the last mission because of its length and difficulty. This time, I took my time to fully immerse myself in the game, exploring everything I missed as a teenager—random encounters, dating, minigames, races, and other aspects I had overlooked. GTA IV stands out with its world, story, characters, and overall immersion, offering an experience I’ve never quite felt with other GTA titles.
The best game in the series (imo) but not the best port however with the steam guide it’s easily fixed. 10/10
I <3 LC
Love the game hate the launcher and having to always be online to play smh
waste of money, gutted there is an unsolved issue with save files preventing me from progressing even past the first mission!
such a shame because i have played this great game before on console but does not work on steam
Don't get me wrong, GTA IV is one of my favorites and is also one of the best games in it's series (imo). The problem with the steam release is it comes with Rockstar's terrible DRM in the form of Rockstar Games Launcher, which does nothing but makes it harder to play the game offline, and in some cases lock you out of the game entirely if you can't create/log into a Rockstar account. It's also pretty much required to install 3rd party modifications to downgrade the game's version to make it reasonably playable and restore cut content. It's insane Rockstar added all this unnecessary DRM and launcher bloat to a now 16 year old game that has been cracked wide open by software pirates for years. I cannot in any good conscious recommend an inferior, buggier, worse performing version of a game that comes with a launcher that may or may not allow you to play a game that you paid your hard earned money to obtain.
pros:
- Cousin
- Liberty City
- Entertaining characters
- The narrative
- Soundtrack
- Gunplay
- Outstanding physics system
- Bowling
- Outstanding bowling
- Writing
- Legendary protagonist
- Immersive world
- Niko
- Great combat
cons:
- Wish it was all bowling
Overall this was a great game but I thought bowling was going to be a bigger part, like why was the final mission not just a big bowling match?
In all seriousness this game is just incredible and you will not regret playing it if you like other Rockstar games
Final interview bug.... Imposible to finish game. As we all know.... Rockstar Games dont give a shit about customers.... so bug will never be fixed.
Trying to play GTA 4 with Rockstar Launcher is like being stuck in Roman's endless cycle of bad decisions—only here, the bad decision is needing an internet connection and an account for a single-player game. It’s like jumping through hoops just to get into Liberty City. I can deal with Roman’s calls, but Rockstar Launcher is a whole new level of ‘no thank you.’ Game’s a classic, but the launcher? It’s like dealing with a corrupt cop who keeps asking for more paperwork. At this point, I might as well pirate the game, even though I own it on Steam, just to avoid all this hassle.
A legendary GTA. In my option, with a best GTA character Niko Belic. But the game is old, visuals are outdated, however it's still gold.
Cannot recommend. It's a hassle with Rockstar launcher and gamers should not condone this behavior.
You would get a better experience by getting this game illegally. Steam should not sell games that require another launcher, period
This game is so good that you can't give it a negative review even though this port version is bad, it has a lot of bugs, you can't play it without being connected to Internet and also there some content is removed
Let us be a warning to everyone. DO NOT BUY RICKSTAR GAMES! If you happen to have any issues with your purchases, you are totally out of luck. They will not help you. They are theaves!!. I have several rock star games through steam. These games are associated with an old email account. Every game I buy is associated with this old email account. I have contacted rockstar several times to correct this they absolutely refuse. Recently, they updated and required me to log into my old email to confirm my account. This is obviously not possible because the account no longer exist. Contacting rockstar, they made me jump through so many hoops, screenshots, receipts, only to require me in the end to log into that email and confirm. So their solution to me not being able to confirm my account is to log into an email address that doesn't exist. They absolutely REFUSE to listen to me or hear my story. The stole my money as well as thousands of others, Google it.
Rockstar is not a company to do business with. You have been warned.
great game, garbage company. their useless launcher is mandatory and the pc port is straight up trash. if you have any integrity as a gamer, do not ever give money to these "people".
This fourth iteration of the series returns to the streets of Liberty City in what is the darkest and grittiest entry so far. Niko Bellic, from Eastern Europe, arrives in town seeking the American Dream and an escape from his troubled past, yet as the game progresses he will find more crime, betrayal, and revenge. The game has a more serious tone than previous entries and also feels more realistic. As with previous titles, the writing and dialogue contain a lot of humour and satire, and poke fun at American society and culture. For its time, the textures, player models and lighting were all a major step up from San Andreas, however the visuals as a whole have a gloomier and subdued feel, reflecting the content being presented. Liberty City feels alive with pedestrians and vehicles appearing to have complex routines and interactions, with unparalleled attention to detail. Car handling and physics received an overall, now feeling heavier and certainly not as easy to control at higher speeds, a valid criticism given the series' more arcadey roots. The cover system adds more in depth combat options, as opposed to the run and gun gameplay of previous entries. Of course no GTA game could be complete without its music and talk show radio stations; covering various eras and genres that appeal to a wide range of players. Overall GTA 4, while now dated, was a pivotal entry to the series with improved gameplay mechanics, compelling narrative and character development, and of course an interactive and detailed open world.
The absolute worst PC port ever released to the public. Has been completely unplayable since the day I bought it in 2016 and have been waiting YEARS for a patch. Across 7 different gaming PCs I've had over the years, after trying every fix known, the game refuses to use more than 5% of my CPU or GPU. Even willing to play at 30fps, You'll never get rid of the game breaking stutter. Good game on XBox, but Rockstar stole my money with this game on PC.
This game deserves so much better man :/
Haven't finish the story yet, but I have to be like half-way through now, and it's been great! The problem is this port is just terrible compared to how they handled it on console. Seriously. Why does it run so terribly, and why does it look worse than the console version?
I want to recommend this game, but I can't. There are mods out there to fix everything wrong with this port, from it's terrible framerate and lag spikes, to its visuals (making it look closer to how it did on console), so if you're willing to put in the time and effort to fix this mess, great game. I highly recommend watching TJGM's tutorial on Youtube, on how to fix GTA IV with mods. It's just 4 different mods that fix various graphical bugs in the game, and makes things look better compared to how the game normally looks. He also has a different video on how to fix the game's framerate and lag spikes.
This is a great game, but this port just sucks.
I started the same mission five or six times and each time I got stuck on the same thing because that stinking warehouse door kept closing.
Rockstar Games should use 2K as an exmple and finally get rid of thir damn launcher.
This game even doesn't want to launch. Just tells "the game exited unexpectedly". It's completely unplayable for some people.
As most people have mentioned, the game in itself is fantastic, but it is really badly ported for PC and performance is continuously horrible with frame dips and stutters, especially when driving that makes it really hard to enjoy unless you tweak it with some mods to begin with, absolute bare minimum you need FusionFix
Bought this years ago and am now locked out as Rockstar demands the original email to be associated to the Rockstar Launcher within steam, on support to Rockstar and cannot "Verify" my old account. making this game locked out at the launcher. Great Game, Terrible Practice.
Game is excellent, but acquire it by other means. This is a gimped version.
Cut radio music, multiplayer removed, and despite removing online multiplayer they found the time and resources to add a required secondary online account with "rockstar social club".
It's honestly sickening that companies can do this to a game you paid for more than a decade ago, then claim to be victims and put the law against you for trying to get your hands on the software that you originally paid for.
Bitiremediğim nadir oyunlardan. Nedendir bilmiyorum.
While the game itself is really good, in fact i think it's the best one in the GTA series, rockstar sucks a.ss and this version is unplayable on current high-end machines - the mission involving driving a bike early in the game is unplayable because driving is kinda slippery, and i later found out that's because the framerate is too high, so i had to lock it at 85FPS for it to be playable but also avoid motion sickness. The last part of the final mission, though, is unplayable, even with the framerate locked at 60FPS, and i guess you'd need to run it at 30FPS for it to work properly, so i gave up after trying it a dozen times or so, it was pretty frustrating. Also a lot of the original radio music from back when it was released is not in this version of the game, because they were too lazy and greedy to renew the licenses for the songs. Oh yeah, and you need to sign up for a rockstar account and have their launcher open while playing the game. There are mods that fix all of this, but needing mods for the main game to be playable is ridiculous, f**k rockstar, don't buy anything from them.
The game is amazing legend game but it runs poorly you have to use mods to fix it and i dont have time for that.
I was excited to play GTA IV, but it gave me a "FATAL ERROR" on my PC despite my system being far better than the recommended specs. After troubleshooting without success, I tried the Liberty City version instead, which surprisingly worked—but with severe performance issues. The framerate was consistently below 30 FPS, even on the lowest settings. Given that my PC far exceeds the required specs, this was incredibly disappointing. GTA IV feels poorly optimized for modern systems, and these issues made for a frustrating experience, ultimately preventing me from enjoying the game as I had hoped.
Good game, great story, but the PC port is awful.
GTA 4 is a really cool and fun game with fun missions (except for the helicopter mission glitch, that made me lose my mind) and is one of my favorite games and niko is my favorite protagonist. You just automatically love his character and his story. It's better than GTA 5 ngl
No offline saves; DRM trash. What’s the point if I can’t play while I travel. Always online for single player should be illegal
It's old, it looks just like it did on PS3, glitchy and the world will fall out from under you sometimes... but everytime I go bowling with Roman it makes it all worthwhile!
An amazing Grand Theft Auto game that I do not feel the need to write a detailed review for, it's been out since 2008 and you probably know what this game is, and all that there is to say about it has been said a thousand times before.
I've played through the game 3 times before and it's a great GTA experience, it's a very huge contrast when compared to the general enshitification of triple a video games that has happened post GTA 4 release.
This version gives you access to all the content that was released for GTA 4.
Beware that the game does indeed look like a 2008 PS3 game, quite low textures and in general the game has a 'foggy' or 'cloudy' look to it, however there are mods that improve the look of this game greatly making it a non-issue.
Also beware that you're required to make a Rockstar account and use their 3rd party launcher to play the game, an example of the tendrils of the modern triple a video game industry that manages to even slither its way back in time, so to speak, to decades old releases to taint those games as well.

started to play it in 2016 and still spending some time. Miss haircuts, car tuning and map not so big. But in general its fine.
Still better than GTA5 in terms of game physics.
surprisingly fun and well made. i reccomend you drive around with mopeds instead of cars because the cars are just horrible. other than that, the story is really good and i really enjoyed the dlc's aswell, even more so than the main story.
Man, GTA 4 is such a masterpiece! The gritty realism, the deep story of Niko Bellic trying to escape his past, and the raw vibe of Liberty City make it stand out. The physics engine and attention to detail were way ahead of their time. It might not have the flashiness of later games, but the atmosphere and storytelling are unmatched. Absolute classic!
