Finished today. This isn't a game, this is a work of art. The only bad thing about this experience is that I get it to live it for the first time only once. Buy it, download it and bask into the perfect art direction of this masterpiece.
Reading the negative reviews on this game... i can definitely say some people are just NPCs who buy whatever game pops with overwhelmingly positive on their front page, then complain because they have 20 minutes attention spam and end playing their lifeless game who have hundreds of hours on instead, if the game is not for you, it's because it's your fault for buying it mindlessly, not the game's fault.
The neural activation you get from the music and art style of GRIS slap harder than the nukes Japan, and if you think i am exaggerating, or that this game is one of those "overrated games" you are probably the type of person who gets satisfaction playing soulless open world RPGs, idle games or asset flip roguelites. If you don't like walking sims/artistic/mystery/platformer/puzzle games, don't play GRIS, and if you do, don't say I didn't warn you.
I finished the game first time and looks like I missed a lot. But in chapter selection I have no idea which one I actually missed sth and deserve going back. This is one main disadvantage I would say. Progress is not revealed clearly.
Second is the story behind it. I was totally confused and had no idea what it was trying to tell. Is the statue her mom? Why crying for what?
Art and music are good designed. Else idk maybe not so good.
its insanely good, but a little too short. still, i do recommend everyone to experience this game at least once!!
the beautiful soundtrack and amazing visuals blend together to tell a story in a very unique way!
Have you ever suddenly become so inspired to draw that you run out, grab a pencil & paper, and sit down only to feel your soul being crushed because you realise you can't fit more than 3 toes on your stickmen?
Well if that's so, then GRIS is that feeling in game form.
The Story:
You play as a seemingly unnamed young lady who has experienced a significant loss and has to overcome it by journeying across an abstract world and restoring its colour.
The Gameplay:
GRIS is a 2D platformer with emphasis on puzzle solving. There is nothing in the way of enemies or difficult scenarios such as time limits. This may make it sound mundane but it definitely isn't, especially on your first playthrough. The environment in which you find yourself in is often lush and vibrant and the way in which you platform changes every now and then, keeping the challenges of the puzzles fresh.
As you progress through the game you unlock new abilities to help with the new environmental challenges such as glide and double-jump to name a few of the simpler ones. There is no voice-acting apart from the singing, and the environments that tell the story are heavily symbolic and open to interpretation, making each player feel something a little different.
Some Pros:
- Breathtaking visuals and artstyle
- Emotional and impactful music / musical sequences
- Well executed (if not original) puzzles and mechanics
- Smooth, seamless gameplay
- Chapter select with a degree of replayability
- Controller support
- Not overpriced, goes on sale occasionally
Some Cons:
- Level layout can be confusing as levels expand
- Has a fair amount of filler between chapters, where you just walk forward and occasionally jump
Conclusion:
GRIS is one of those games that's as much an "experience" as it is a game. It doesn't define a genre so much as makes an effort to be one of the games that represents the 2D platformer instead. The hype around the beauty of this game may make it seem like its this one-of-a-kind game whereas it could also be seen as just another platformer. Whether it is is entirely subjective but I can wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try, especially if you can grab it on sale. It's certainly easier and more enjoyable than making space for that 4th stickman toe.
10/10, Will cry in grey again :D
experiencing gris was something i can only describe as utterly heart-wrenching and profound - the sound design, visuals, art direction and platforming seamlessly amalgamate into what is one of the most breathtaking games ive ever played and i cannooooot recommend it enough. genuinely incredible story of grief and what it means to overcome it, all without a single word to top it off
A lovely little adventure with gorgeous graphics and an amazing soundtrack. Platforms and puzzles are fun. 100% recommended
Enchantingly beautiful.
Hauntingly memorable.
Indissoluble soundtracks.
Pure like ephemeral dreams.
Precious tale without words.
Magnificent work of art(s).
A solid masterpiece of all time.

I let all of my sisters play this game and all of us love it. this game has the most beautiful art and music design I've experienced before.
Beautiful game that cements the fact that games are the definitive form of art for me. This game is a perfect blend of stunning watercolor visuals combined with beautiful music and excellent sound design accompanied by clever (although quite simple) puzzle mechanics and level design. I'm always afraid of losing interest in puzzle games but nothing overstays its welcome and mechanics keep changing to keep things fresh. I loved the experience. Thanks for making a beautiful game!
Visually the game looks great, and that's what made me buy it when discounted.
Some of the puzzles were fun, but the game overall wasn't engaging enough to make me want to open it up again after the first two play sessions.
I'm sure there's meaning to the story for someone that finishes that game, but in a game of abstract figures and spaces, something being explicit - such as the story - might have at least got me invested in the game.
Gris is one of the best games I have ever played, if not the absolute best. It is easy and intuitive to pass the levels, and the artwork is astonishingly beautiful. It is simple, watercolour-like and perfect, while the story hits close to home. There are many ways one can identify with Gris's character. And it came at the right time in my life.
I found Gris by accident, as it was on sale for little over 1 euro. And as support for the developers, I have also bought the DLC soundtrack. The music is soothing, emotional, alert, depending on the game's chapters. I'm happy it's also on Spotify, so I can have it with me anytime I want to.
To get 100% on achievements might take you a second time to play, and I would advise you do so. Play it the first time for the story alone, and then you can come back (by chapters if need be) to complete the side quests. I would recommend playing it with a controller.
GRIS
A mesmerizing artistic journey that masterfully weaves watercolor visuals with Berlinist's haunting soundtrack. The game tells a poignant story of grief and hope without uttering a single word, letting its stunning art style and fluid animations speak volumes. The platforming mechanics, while simple, serve the narrative perfectly, never overshadowing the emotional core of the experience.
A must-play for anyone who believes games can be art.
Beautiful visual arts and not demanding on jumping. There’s little explanation on game mechanics and the story, so they are all up to your interpretation. Overall it’s a pleasant journey.
Other than the story related ones, most of the achievements are very missable in the first run. There’s the chapter selection function after completing the game, so no stress in the first run which takes about 5 hours.
The game’s experience is perfect on steam deck.
A beautifully crafted game by a studio that has delivered an exceptional experience and journey. What a joy to play through and would recommend anyone to play this game. A must have.
this is a must play music emotions stunning visuals and doesn't over stay its welcome coming in at 4hrs 10/10 amazing gaming experience. (if you get stuck just look up a quick guild so you can experience the game and not get hung up on a puzzle)
Gris is an absolute masterpiece—easily the best game I’ve ever played. The story is deeply emotional and thought-provoking, taking you on a journey of loss and healing. The hand-drawn artwork is breathtaking, with each frame feeling like a piece of art, and the music complements the mood perfectly, creating an immersive experience.
The gameplay is smooth and beautifully tied to the emotional narrative. It’s not just a game, but an unforgettable experience that stays with you long after it’s over. Truly a work of art!
Jogo incrível, uma ambientação sem igual, uma das melhores expereciências in game que já tive.
Segue a linha de jogos como Jorney, Abzu e Flower, se você gosta de um deles, pode comprar este sem medo.
finally played gris. i’ve been meaning to try something like this for ages but never got around to it. The music and gameplay are amazing—totally worth it!
I got this game cheap from a recent sale. Didn't think too much of it, saw it had really pretty art and decided to pick it up that way. The game starts off slow, at the time I was about ready to bounce off the game because I felt like I wanted more, but somehow I stuck with it.
And there were moments where the game continued to keep my attention, as more color gets added to the world. The sound and the music is absolutely so fitting.
This is not just a game but a lovely piece of art. It hits some themes of loss and grief so there is a lot of symbolism and theory you can pick at. It's also a rather short experience that you can finish in an afternoon; I ended up seeing the ending within three hours. Definitely worth a try.
First, let's get some context out of the way before the core review, at the time of writing this, the game is on sale at 90% off for under a buck. For that price, the game is a no-brainer. However, I'm surprised a game that is only 3 hours long costs nearly 10 bucks. I don't think the game is worth the hype at full price. But it's just my opinion.
The game itself isn't bad though. In fact for it's short duration, it did make me emotional with some of it's parts. There are moments that actually resonated with me through the amazing music and the ambient arts.
The puzzles are ridiculously easy, the platforming is super simple and the story is serviceable at best.
If you generally vibe with these kind of games, I guess there are worse way to spend your money. But I wouldn't recommend spending full price for a game that can be perfected in one sitting. Especially since the story isn't exceptional anyway.
Everything this game does, it does perfectly. The story is told without a word spoken. It evokes emotion in a powerful way. The puzzling and platforming are satisfying without being overly challenging. The art is out of this world. The soundtrack is a perfect companion to all of the above. As a friend said, the only negative thing I can say about this game is that I'll never be able to experience it for the first time again.
This game is all about the art, not the content!
About GRIS
Embark on a short artistic experience as Gris - "a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience", as described by the game description. Throughout this game, you'll navigate a 2D world in which Gris will find the colors of the world which have faded away from her reality. As Gris overcomes her sorrow, you'll unlock abilities enhancing your navigation experience, which are manifested inside of her dress.
The game is in the form of a simplistic platformer, however, this game is all about the visual experience rather than gameplay, story and mechanics.
My Pain Point About GRIS
I only have one pain point which is that I wish it was possible to track the amount of mementos you need in each chapter and checkpoint! Perhaps such a feature could unlock after reaching the end of the game! It would be useful for those seeking 100% completion!
My Overall Thoughts on GRIS
I purchased the game while it was on sale for just about 0.80 USD, and it was the best 80 cents I have ever spent. It was worth every penny. I really admired the artistic depiction and symbolism behind Gris' struggles and her journey to overcome sorrow. The art really left me in awe. Based on the childhood ending, I am assuming that Gris' painful experience was losing her mother. But, I am happy to see that, by the end, she has overcome that pain and moved on.
So, if you're looking to have a break from the games you usually play and just want to admire some art - then this game is for you.
Overall Rating: 10/10
Very bland the gameplay was a bit boring the art style looks good though so I'll give it that.
Bleh... An interactive piece of software, not a game. Boring, bland, seemingly pointless exploration. Does finding the collectables do anything?? The platforming is easy and you walk a lot just to stretch out playtime. Nothing interesting besides the visuals.
Gris has some of the most beautiful art and sound design I've experienced in a game, and is as emotional an experience as you suspect it is, given the trailer.
This is a game about grief, with its stages represented by the colours recovered as the game progresses, and the processing of it represented mechanically by the puzzles and critters you encounter throughout. It's an effective interactive metaphor that is held back by somewhat clunky controls and a poor UX.
SO, before you play, internalise the following:
- You cannot change the resolution before you start the game
- You cannot change the keybinding before you start the game
- Once you have control in-game, you can press ESC to modify the screen resolution and keybindings; it will default to 1080p, so this is recommended.
- Whenever you get access to a new ability, it will be available to change in the keybindings; this is recommended as the default keys are just badly-ported random letters on the keyboard. You will not be able to change the binding of all keys from the start, and must wait until each ability is unlocked before you can rebind them
[*] There is no tutorial and the game does a poor job at explaining itself; it assumes prior knowledge about the game before playing. This is not a metroidvania, and exploration is not rewarded; ignore collectables for your first playthrough and just focus on making forward progress - the collectables are there for the New Game+
This is a beautiful experience, but I suspect a platformer is the wrong format for it and that it would have been better as an artfully-animated short film. Despite that, however, it's still an emotional experience worth having, and it regularly goes on a steep enough sale that I can't do anything other than recommend it whenever it hits a price-point that you're comfortable with!
VISUALLY STUNNING. i'm obsessed with the art n storytelling. puzzles can be a bit challenging for my fish brain, but I'm enjoying the experience nonetheless ;3c
Wow. Just wow. I don't really have a ton of words to describe this. It wasn't a hard game, but it wasn't easy either. Quite possibly the most aesthetically pleasing game I've ever played, and the soundtrack kept reminding me of Made in Abyss for some reason(which is a very good thing). I highly recommend this.
Be sure to pick up a copy of the soundtrack too. One of the most emotive pieces of music ever made and one of the best soundtracks of any medium, not just games. Artstyle, gameplay and story are also stunning but the music is what elevates this beyond just a game.
If you have played games like Journey, abzù or inside, i would highly recommend to try this game too. It plays simple and looks gorgeous, give it try :)
Truly breathtaking. From the graphics to the game play - an absolutely adoring experience. The levels/puzzles were interesting and challenging enough whilst still being fun and easy to do. The art is amazing and the soundtrack is incredible. I could not recommend this game enough.
For a low investment of around 2 hours, GRIS is an emotional platformer that stands out for its watercolor aesthetic. While the mechanics of the game are certainly nothing to boast about creatively, they're implemented well and are merely the vehicle by which the art of the game is experienced. Solid game for the price.
There are hundreds of people complaining about X-Box controller support, while officially supported, not working, even with steam input enabled, and there is no well-known or implemented fix for the last 6 Years. Sure, you can play it with a keyboard, but thats by far less comfortable, and it doesnt seem like there is any effort put into fixing the issue. The game itself is great, a Platformer without the frustrating part, and a touching ambient. But every time i want to play it, I get frustrated with my controller not being registered and close it again.
A sorrow filled game with beautiful imagery and astounding soundtrack. An amazing 3-5 hour experience. A good game to just have a moment to yourself.
This game is beautiful no other way to describe it. From the beginning to the end I was mesmerised by just how picturesque all of the environments are. The gameplay is simple but its obviously not the driving point, its the experience of going through the areas and piecing together the message of the game. I Highly recommend it, the game is not long so you can finish it in one sitting. Its an amazing bite sized experience.
GRIS is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played and it's better than several other "artsy" ones I've experienced.
I've done a fair amount of watercolor painting and I love how GRIS captures that style. The animation is also great and the story, while not explicitly told, is understandable through the visuals.
The gameplay is platforming with puzzle elements. You can't die in this game and there are no enemies to fight, so progression is about using the powers you obtain to solve the puzzles in each area. There is a central hub you return to, but it's not like Metroid in that you need to open new paths by backtracking.
The game is very short at 3-4 hours. I didn't find the puzzles particularly hard, but I missed a lot of the achievement-related secrets so these are pretty well hidden. You can play by chapter after you complete the game to get these and I plan to do that.
While I enjoyed the game and recommend it, I do wish that the gameplay was more complex. I love the Ori games, which are full Metroid-style adventures with beautiful visuals, and they feel more complete than this game. I have felt the same way about other "artsy" games such as SCORN and SILT, though GRIS is more fun to play than either of these and has a better art style and story.
If you are looking for a visual feast and don't care too much about the simplicity of this game, then you will probably enjoy GRIS.
A wonderful game under every aspect:
both music and art direction are astounding and the narration is very interesting in its subject matter as well as in how its conveyed ( the game is entirely devoid of speech ).
The only downside may be the simplistic gameplay, but I at least wasn't bored and there a few secret achievements and "challenges" that may spice up your time with this little gem.
Definitely give it a shot
Simple yet satisfying gameplay, amazing soundtrack, and a beautifully endearing story.
Hands down the most beautiful game I have ever played; and I have played a few. The visuals and sound are beyond compare. I am not the best platformer in the universe, but with an Xbox controller I was able to complete the game. If you purchase and play just one game this should be the game.
I believe that GRIS is a masterpiece, stunning visually, in terms of atmosphere, music, script... one of the best games I've ever played.
The story offers a lot of room for thought. I have my own take on the trauma the protagonist and her mother went through. It’s a meaningful way to discuss deep, painful topics through meditative gameplay, soothing music, and delicate, airy art. This project really resonated with me. It blends contemplation with messages of acceptance. It’s truly impactful!
A beautiful and soft game, leaving a bittersweet taste after finishing it.
The gameplay is simple but the story and the level keep this game entertaining. I loved this game and absolutely recommand it.
I can't wait to play Neva now !
This game in my opinion feels kind of short, so maybe its best to buy it on sale? but otherwise this game is STUNNING and GORGEOUS. I love the artstyle the game has, it is so colorful and pretty and the sounds and music is also very beautiful and pleasant. The platforming and puzzles are a bit more on the simpler side but still well designed and fun to do. This game was overall a very good experience
thank you for making such a unique game , i loved the concept and everything about this game from the art to the music to the game play everything was pleasant 10/10
Amazing and adorable game. Thank you to entire team at Nomada studio.
Bought the game a while back priced off as I loved the style and found it different enough to warrant a look.
Normally I would not so quickly go for a game depicting feelings, but at least the art style was different enough to warrant a look.
It is a very nice and fun to play puzzle/platform game with an unique art style that flows and works well, but it feels a tad on the short side sadly as even without rushing it took me only 4 hours to complete all levels..
If you can find it priced off and want a romp through an interesting, differently styled and quite short platform/puzzle game, this one might scratch your itch, just be warned it is more a relaxed paced exploration then a frantic platformer.
I bought this game over a year ago and hadn't gotten to it. Now that I have played it is one of my favorite games. Amazing art direction and color usage throughout with art that constantly wowed me. The story was unforgettable and beautiful in such a surreal way. Whether or not a person can relate to what is being shown does not matter and the value of that trumps any doubts I believe a person should have to play this.
This is honestly one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. It has been my favorite since day one release!
I have never played any game as beautiful as this.
The artstyle, animations and music are masterfully brought to life.
Gris proves that games don't need to be needlessly long to create lasting impressions.
Imagine being in an art gallery looking at a painting wondering how it came to be, this game flips this perspective upside down, you are in the painting, you are the colors, you are the gentle strokes; oh dare I say you are the painting.
If you are interested in art Gris will definitely be a perspective changing piece, that being said you don't have to be an art-enthusiast to fully appreciate the beauty and the perspective the game provides.
