"GameDevDan vs Life" is difficult to write a review for because it's not one single game but a large collection of very mediocre games, basically demos and other very short/unambitious games. To formulate this review, then, there will be some generalisations made, but I feel after going through many of the games that this generalisation is warranted and valid.
The minigames/demos etc all share many of the same defects, sufficient to disqualify any single game, and it's barely worth the effort to go through each one just to check if each one meets minimum standard expectations that PC gamers have (customisable resolution, 4K support, 60hz support or greater, decent artwork/visuals, customisable controls, not mobile apps, etc etc). Let's go into the general defects.
Many of the games are obviously intended to be mobile apps and not real PC games (including instructions to "tap" your 4K gaming monitor... right).
The games don't feature customisable controls or resolution. They all look bad... they all have mediocre visuals, not even 3D graphics... it's really hard to make a compelling argument to gamers that they should spend money on such inferior visuals and technical delivery.
Some of the defects in the games can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs, which is what just about all the games here feel like.
A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developers", Chequered Ink Ltd/GameDevDan have done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers.
These technical defects push these games below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
"GameDevDan vs Life" didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the bundle, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the games didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for playing the two "last one standing" games, trivial to get, but less than 31 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the bundle. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the games.
The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in these low quality games is to be expected.
So, should you buy this game bundle? Are these some of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
"GameDevDan vs Life" has the laughable price of around $6 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $6 asking price for this game could get you games like "Dishonored", "Mass Effect" or "Rainbow 6 Siege".
I'd rather pay three times the price of this for one single decent game... sure, there's a lot of games, but more of a bad thing is not better!
realy good pack!
The carting, gyro boss and mystery games make this pack worth it. Full of fun puzzle games, reflex games and platformers that will fill up thirty minutes here and there. It's not an amazing piece of art but there's a couple of gems in there that really make this unique compilation stand out.
