A friend linked this game's page in Discord and I had money to spare. I checked it out; it's like a dating sim/dungeon crawler hybrid. I like dungeon crawlers. I like the occasional dating sim. Both? At once? And you date the weapons? It sounded very silly and I like silly.
So anyway I bought it and like 5-6 hours later I'm at what I assume is the final boss. This game literally sucked me in like a damn whirlpool.
And y'know what? I love it for that. I went into this thinking "oh it'll just be a silly lil game about kissing swords" and NO. NO I GOT AN ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD STORY AND SOME NICE GAMEPLAY. My only negative for this game is that I didn't have enough money to just wait and then buy it full price. I'm gonna keep a closer eye on these devs and their games. I'm also going to buy them because this game was legitimately shockingly fun.
TLDR: I paid $8 for this game and I feel like I ripped off the devs by not paying more money for such a good experience. Buy this game if you love dating simulators and also dungeon crawlers.
My honest review is that I am disappointed but still had some fun.
I have had my eyes on this game for a while and waiting for a sale to finally get this game, I LOVE vn's and dating sims, it my favorite thing to play to relax and chill. However, I am glad I got this on sale rather than buying it at full price (which I can't do a lot bec I am on a strict spending limit).
The sounds are great, music is my most favorite thing about this game, character design is on point, and the voice actors are amazing choices for their characters. I did enjoy the gameplay part, it was a little tricky on heavy weapons, but I don't know if that's truly the game fault or my own, so I can't put that down, but the rest was easy and simple enough to get through with some difficulties to keep me going back. And being poly is nice and the options to be friends or even to just date one of the weapons is something I love in a dating sim bec I want to see all the characters and enjoy having the options.
Now for some problems I have.
The story was not the best in my opinion, for how it ended, the lead-up to the final battle was clunky, and I would have liked a more solid ground for it, it was not at all what I was hoping for and with a few minor tweaks, I could see it improving the game, like having the option to stay and if choosing to go then a better ending then what we got. fix a few lines here and there for some characters. The Eric part of the whole thing I felt more annoyed than anything. Also, making the hats stand out more of what their purpose is, I legit went through the whole game, and until I got to the last dungeon, I didn't know there was a reason for them, I played 18 hours yall.
otherwise, it a decent game to play, I did have some fun, and it was silly too. I would recommend this if you get this on sale and don't mind some quirks. I enjoyed my time, but still wished for a little something more that would make me come back to play besides finishing up achievements.
The wokeness is... mesmerizing. This game lets YOU, yes YOU date weapons.
I absolutely ADORE this game! I didn't know a part Dating Sim, part Dungeon Crawler Roguelite would be THIS much fun! I had to do everything! After I 100% the game, all I can really say is pick this baby up!! It can be pretty silly at times, but the combat is fun with all the different weapons, and it's a lot of fun getting to know each Weapon-Person for who they are! I even had some sympathy for the main antagonist!
You can kiss sword people and be gay and hit monsters with sword people, banger game
very action packed
Boyfriend Dungeon is set in a beach side town where you yield weapons that turn into people who you can smooch (or take the platonic route if you prefer). The game starts off with a really good pace. It doesn't overwhelm you with dating options because they are slowly introduced as you progress through the plot. However this is a double edged sword (wink)! I found myself more drawn to the early weapons/date options because I had already leveled them up more and it was easier to progress with them.
One of my favorite characters- Leah, an Ice Skating instructor fashionista who turns into a hammer, was not introduced until the game was almost over. Overall, the game has some really fun mechanics, cute dates, and some interesting combat styles that are tied to each weapon. But there is not much that varies from one run to another other than the weapon you choose. Also, only having three rather small dungeons felt rather brief. I was hoping for four. But imo it is always better to be left wanting more with a game than throwing in the towel because of filler content.
Playtime: 12.7 hours
Overall Rating: 8/10 🗡️
Spice Rating: 69/100 🌶️
Cute rogue-like/dating sim. You can either romance the characters or play completely platonic as friends.
Very cute game, 3rd dungeon is a bit challenging to complete but still fun none the less. Highly recommend!
Found the game fun. I love that you can date a bunch of different characters and try out all the different weapons. Dungeons are decently challenging but not impossibly hard. Works great on my steam deck too.
this is so much more fun than i thought it would be ...
those lads sharp as hell
AMAZING GAME!!! the game play is fantastic, the art and music is beautiful, I adore it all!!!
i love this game ive played it before on my xbox so i had to get it again on my laptop
Despite some initial hesitation, I really enjoyed this one.
Overall, I would recommend the game to people who like dating sims and maybe want something a little unique, action oriented, and more adventurous than a visual novel or interactive fiction. Each character has their own little story, and all of them are unique from each other. Plus, I found the animations very aesthetically pleasing.
There are 3 dungeons, each different, although sometimes the design of the levels within the dungeon felt a little redundant. However, not so much so that I quit playing. The monsters within the dungeons were creative and sometimes really goofy, but enjoyable to duke it out with. The weapons are each different from one another and it's fun to use the combos and different moves. By the time to finish a level, there is a sense of achievement -- and the highlight summary of your level accomplishments gave me a dopamine kick, at least.
Additionally, the game includes elements of crafting, gathering resources, looking for secrets and shopping around for materials or whatnot. It basically has enough different elements in the overall play experience that could satisfy somebody who likes the novelty of multiple things happening all at once.
Boyfriend dungeon is one of the better queer dating games I've seen out there. It has the goofyness of regular visual novel dating games combined with a variety of choices such as polyamory, the choice to be in a platonic romance with everyone if your ace, and even the option to straight up say no to people. It does, however, touch on very REAL topics from the queer community such as stalking and abuse, even including someone who "likes" weapons but only ends up using them. For that, you do need to be careful playing this game. Know your limits, take breaks when you need to. As someone who is ace-spec as well, there was one other character who made me slightly uncomfy by being very forward at all times, you can just turn him down and he will respect that, but it may make anyone who is ace slightly uncomfortable with that character. This game also gives 3 different pronoun options which was very nice to see, and one character later in the game even is referred to by both she/her and they/them pronouns which was nice to see. Overall, very good game, very queer friendly, lots of important discussions in the game.
Such a fun game with plenty of unique characters to get to know! I appreciated how inclusive it was with the characters, stories, and skill level. It has replayability and good value for what I paid. Would recommend to anyone that enjoys a rogue like with a romantic twist.
I'm a bit ambivalent about Boyfriend Dungeon. On the one hand, it has a lot of good things -- a wide cast of unique and well developed romance options; fantastic queer representation, with three nonbinary romance options; the ability to play as aro/ace or poly. It also has some elements I found less appealing. The main plotline about being stalked and having your boundaries violated is unpleasant and is a perfectly valid reason not to get into the game. Similarly, Sunder's plot also felt a bit ick at times, with him effectively manipulating you, which feels a bit odd given his presence on all the game's advertising. Perhaps the most damning critique though is that the main gameplay is largely repetitive and doesn't have the staying power the game's length requires. However, overall I recommend Boyfriend Dungeon because of its dialogue and characters, in particular my personal favourites Rowan and Dr. Holmes.
Normally I don't write reviews but I feel like I had to for this game after sitting on this for a while.
I bought this game on sale thinking that it would be a win-win scenario since I like both dating sims and roguelike games.
However, my experience turned out to be not as favourable as I thought it would be.
Visual Novel/ Dating Sim aspect
Pretty basic format of receiving texts from characters, meeting them in town and upping their affection through using their weapons in dungeons. No problems there.
The plot is pretty basic but I will be honest in saying that the climax felt extremely lacklustre in comparison to what it felt like they were building up to. The potential was there but I found myself getting disappointed and trying to hold it together in the final fight I just wanted to finish the game.
I tried really hard to like the characters. I really did but I found that some of the dialogue felt unnatural and some of the characters felt pretty shallow. So, I didn't really find myself getting attached to any of the characters and just went for whoever was easiest to use in the dungeons. The endings didn't really help either. I'm aware because of the setting, there really wasn't a lot of room for something of a deeper relationship but the endings either had me feeling empty or that it was all a waste of time. Not in a sense that I wish I didn't play the game but I felt bad that I had put all this time into getting to try to know these people only for me to basically just kind of dust off my hands and be like 'whelp that was fun!'
Gameplay
It took a bit to get used to. Especially with the heavier weapons which I did't really end up liking no matter how much I tried to force myself to use them.
I didn't hate the combat but it got really repetitive in a way that didn't have me looking forward to playing dungeons even though I needed to. I found myself wanting to rush through dungeons rather than taking a more reasonable pace like I had done in the beginning.
I'm not sure if I could give a proper number rating but this game left me feeling really empty and just wondering what could have been.
.
one of my favorite soundtracks and one of my favorite feel-good games. i got my family into this soundtrack. i didnt like any of the new three characters, but thats literally fine because theres like eight other ones im in love with. this game is fundamentally whimsical and queer. delightful.
Had a lot of fun with this. Very cute, lighthearted game.
I didn't know what to expect when I picked this game, but I didn't expect a humorous & heart-warming game that would capture my attention. I recommend this game for anyone looking for a mix of dungeon crawler roguelike + dating sim. I love that this game has support for all orientations, and you can run a full-friendship game without consequences. The music score I have saved, it is so well constructed. The art is impeccable.
Pros: the art, the music, the animation, the story. Cons: mechanics can be a bit clunky in the dungeon, time pressure instituted at the end of the game (unclear if it's a false pressure or not).
One of the best dating sims I have played. Very straight-forward, unique game play, and a wide variety of weapons and outfits make for a great rogue-like.
Like the concept of this game but the controls feel super clunky and none of the characters are likable.
I just wish they'd add more stuff and continue development
sad but happy face
still love it tho
A lovely game. The balance between fighting in the dungeon and going on dates is delightful! I supported this game from the beginning, and I'm so glad to have it now.
Pocket is best cat
Fun but short dating sim/dungeon crawler.
I never thought I would be so attracted to an axe...
And a dagger...
And a whip...
And ... ...
I simply loved everything! The soundtrack is amazing, the art is incredible and the gameplay is a delight! This game is a wonderful cozy roguelite, 10/10!
i know that many may say that this is a cheesy but i love this game and the narrative is very well thought out and the characters are well made and compelling, i live for my characters girlfriend and i love that it defiantly allows for a romance no matter your orientation, there is a character romance that fits any taste that you may have.
I can befriend a cute cat. 10/10 Now Sunder and I are married
This shi makes you question love and if you're gay or not. 10/10
Great characters, an intriguing story, and an engaging gameplay loop. i enjoyed alternating between the dating sim aspects and a rogue like dungeon crawler. That said, combat was a little clunky and I sometimes struggled with it being imprecise. Overall, a fun game that I enjoyed playing.
I've always wondered what it would be like to be chatted up by a man who could turn into a deadly weapon and send me pics of his sword hilt...
Soul eater if Ohkubo wasn't a coward
I knew this was going to be a good game, but I didn't expect myself playing for six hours straight!
Don't be like me and assume it's a dating sim, this is genuinely fun for the sake of being fun and romantic.
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
i like it, its super cute and im not great at video games so its nice to have one with simple fight mechanics that i learned very easily.
This game is splendid
Unusual mix of roguelite dungeoning with dating - simple enough on the combat and exploration to accelerate your dating routine - while the writing and characters are genuinely interesting and it pays off to get to know them better - and it's satisfying to see that "love" can just mean an intimate friendship.
It could do with a LOT more content, though! My craving for challenging combat and dating management is sated if I try to speedrun the thing - but it would definitely be nice to have more combat challenges that relate to the challenges of the people I'm going on dates with.
It's a fun and different rpg game where you date the different weapons in the game.
Very cool concept!
if youve played any recent topdown roguelike? Dont really both unless the characters super interest you.
Absolutely loved this game start to finish. I called it my guilty pleasure game as it's nutty dating your weapons but I LOVED IT SO MUCH. I finished it and I only want more. Loved the variation, the setup, the themes. DLC is great (secret weapons).
I think my favourite part was the music and the text messages. It felt so organic to be having texts with the people.
Hat tip to all the non-binaries in there. Glad to feel they were included. But such scale. Some people were completely normal that you'd meet them in real life. Some felt out of a fantasy novel. Loved that.
Love this game and the soundtrack. Fun to play, not too long and amazing characters. Can only recommend it
yes
Its a really cute game. The dungeoning is fun with each weapon having its own playstyle. The variety of relationships you can form in a game called "boyfriend" dungeon was surprising. The only thing I thought could be improved was some of the animations. the cutscenes could do with a second pass to make sure everything looks how they want it to look without any awkward proportions.
Great gameplay and beautifully queer, enjoyed it all
absolutely adored this!! <3 the ost instantly drew me in and the fun gameplay mechanics kept me hooked! i was happy to go down each route and appreciated the way the writers/developers handled polyamory/pursuing multiple love interests! sunder kinda sucks though. i loved every character and liked the bit of exploration into gender with the new characters:) super fun and rowan has my heart fr
Heh. Nice.
