About the Game
Blending the tactical precision of modern stealth titles with the unprecedented immersion of VR, Espire 1: VR Operative is the gold-standard VR stealth FPS. In Espire, the technology of virtual reality has been militarized, allowing you to become the ultimate super-spy as you pilot an Espire Model 1 Operative from the comfort of your very own cutting-edge “Control Theatre”. Yes, the danger - including motion sickness - has been minimized, but the threats are very, very real. It’s your job as an Espire Agent to identify threats and eliminate them before they seize control over the IFA Facility.Espire takes full advantage of virtual reality technology and design to create a deeply satisfying stealth/action FPS while also minimizing drawbacks like motion sickness through the fully customizable Control Theatre system. In Espire, full-freedom movement maintains immersion and feels more comfortable than ever. So you can worry less about taking a break, and more about how you want to play.
Espire 1: VR Operative Key Features Include:
* The definitive VR stealth experience: bringing the stealth genre to the exciting medium of Virtual Reality, delivering gameplay mechanics for the stealth and action genres that have yet to be explored.
* Full freedom of movement: allowing players the freedom to move anywhere within their virtual environment, moving, climbing, and falling with full comfort and no motion sickness for almost all players.
* Complete single-player story, rich in detail: developed as a dedicated single player VR experience with individual story missions and scenario missions that use the story mission environments for short challenges.
* Voice control: Using the VR headset’s onboard microphone, players can make commands and perform actions simply by speaking. The noises players make can draw the enemy to their location – adding a new way to gain the advantage.
* Arsenal of weapons and gadgets: As an Espire model 1 Operative, players will have access to dozens of unique gadgets and weapons such as a tranquilizer pistol and deployable spy cameras in order to complete the mission objectives.
* Global Leaderboard: A worldwide tally awards players a competitive score based on mission time, movement, stealth, ammo conservation, takedowns and other factors.
* Intuitive controls that mimic real life: Interaction in this game aims to be natural and intuitive. Instead of memorizing dozens of button combinations for every action, players perform them as they would in real life. Operatives can crouch and enter cover by physically using their body.
* Smart AI: Enemy combatants in this game actively hunt the player. The AI responds to sight, sound, and other stimuli and will react to with varying levels of suspicion based on the player’s physical stance, movement speed, cover and relative location.

Great stealth game. Leveldesign is good. You can sneak through the levels or kill the opponents.
It's a neat little game
Core compaign may be on the short side, but offers replayability value with different challenges.
There are also a good amount of extra missions in the game you can tackle
Runs smooth, has a good gameplay loop
Overall not too shabby for the price asked
Works on Reverb G2.
This is a neutral review. Espire 1 is not nearly as bad as review score suggests: it is flawed and a bit outdated, but the core gameplay is still fun. A lot of negative reviews were caused by a rough launch and long pause between updates for PC version, but now a lot of things are fixed and improved.
Stealth aspect works well, if you are willing to play by its rules: environments are fun to traverse and hide around, melee takedowns are physical and satisfying, there are a lot of badass gameplay possibilities, like hanging from the ceiling with one hand and shooting a pistol with the other. But unfortunately the game does not push players enough into being sneaky: you can beat the whole game running around guns blazing and get zero enjoyment from that.
Gunplay is bland, but functional, except for shooting behind a cover. A lot of objects have big invisible hitboxes, that do not let bullets pass near them.
Enemy AI is still weak even after an update to it. Guards are extremely shortsighted and they drop combat state when the player goes behind a corner or into a cover for just a few seconds. But I really like how enemies handle finding a dead body and use radio for alerting others.
AI detection issues would have been much less noticeable, if the game was darker like Unknightly or Westworld Awakening. But for some reason, most levels are brightly lit, which is baffling for a stealth game, IMHO.
The game was released in 2019, so it lacks player body physicality. Empty hands clip through everything, making climbing quite awkward at times. Visuals are not outdated though: dynamic shadows are missing, but static lighting is good looking and easy on the performance. There is a little texture popping here and there, but nothing outrageous.
just picked it up, great game so far, mechanics are solide and feel good.
When this game first came out on PSVR it was ahead of the game in what you could do in a VR game. Recently it has been updated for newer headsets. Still in some ways the mechanics in this game are no where in other VR titles such as camera's on the hand to peak around a corner or Verbally say freeze and the A.I react. It is one of my favorite stealth expierences VR has to offer. Reminds me of Metal Gear Solid in some cases. I highly recommend this game.
I *want* to like this game. Reeeeaaaaally want to. I had it on my wishlist for the longest time (before I even had a headset and was just scrolling through my "oooo, this I would like when I get a headset", back in 2019) so I thought to finally get it - oh it is *glitchy* to the point the game is a jumpscare without knowing it. You feel less 007 and more ... like you're playing a stealth VR game that still has some loose ends in the code. I think the talking part is very innovative and cool - it's what convinced me to wishlist it in the first place - but the rest of the game still needs more polish, even after all these years
While the game is somewhat fun if you're into stealth games. It makes you SOOOOO nauseous. Yes, I've spent enough time in VR to be able to handle most games, however this one is something else.
I had not played E1VO before 1.12 update and I'm surprised at how well it's made with all its mechanics and fluent gameplay. It feels like the standards for VR games were much higher five years ago. The only downside I see is that the hands don't collide with the environment, but I understand that was normal back then. The art style and music are fantastic. I hope they will be able to release E2 on Steam eventually, as I'll definitely want to try it.
I'm only 3 hours in but enjoyed what I have played.
This game has so much potential, it sucks that it doesn't live up to it.
The most glaring issue is the AI, they are not threatening at all. They take forever to spot you (even at the highest difficulty) and are not very accurate, giving you plenty of time to kill them before they alert anyone else.
As a stealth game it gives you no incentive to actually be stealthy, I just killed an elite trooper, took his gun and started running around like a maniac shooting everything in sight and not caring at all about being sneaky.
The guns also feel weightless and outdated. being outdone by games that are much older; the gunplay here feels archaic by comparison.
The Tranquilizer is insanely broken. I can see the inspiration from MGS but in that game Tranqs took some time to work if you didn't get a headshot. In this game, every shot puts the enemies to sleep, making the Tranquilizer a better weapon than any lethal one.
The story isn't very interesting, I haven't finished it since I already decided that this game is not for me and refunded it but from what I experienced, it's not good enough to keep you engaged on its own.
When the short but sweet "Oh my god it's MGS but in VR!" phase goes all you'll be left doing is mowing down squadrons of enemies without difficulty running around from one point to the next wondering "When will this game end?"
Forget bad reviews. Game is good. Some jank here and there but still an amazing experience.
We are so back and SOLID
I've tried to play this game on like 8 different occasions and every time I get fed up with the multitude of amateurish mistakes and quit around the third level.
Right off the bat the game shows HTC Vive controllers in the menus even though I have a Quest 3. Why show controllers at all? Just show the character's hands. You get into the game, grab a gun, and realize the controllers aren't aligned properly. You put your gun away and it seems to switch holsters at random, so when you need it most it isn't where you expect it to be. Even after 10 calibrations your chest holsters will either be inside of your body or blocking your vision. You're told that you can climb metal surfaces but that's not entirely true, you can climb like 70% of the level that isn't metal and which 70% seems to be completely random because one level you can climb concrete walls and in another you can't. It'd honestly be better if you could just climb everything except for special anti-magnetic surfaces or something. Your hands phase through the world which makes it difficult to climb things like ladders because you keep pushing your hand through the surface and grabbing the air on the other side resulting in you falling. The level design assumes you can jump but you can't, there's a part in the second level where it seems like you're supposed to jump from scaffolding to scaffolding to traverse a pit but instead you have to awkwardly drop off the side of each one and climb back up. There's tons of railings and ledges that you have to awkwardly mantle over that a jump button would have made so much easier to traverse. Sprinting doesn't turn off when you stop moving, so if you sprint, come to a complete stop, then try to sneak past an enemy, you just end up sprinting full speed and making a bunch of noise because it doesn't turn off unless you press the sprint button again. I just unbound the damn button because it was so annoying. There doesn't seem to be any checkpoints, so if you're attempting full stealth and get detected you have to start the whole level over. There might be some in later levels but I've never had the patience to reach them. The AI spots you through anything considered glass, even if it's nearly opaque, and should never be engaged with in melee combat as you can punch an unsuspecting soldier 4 times in the back of the head with all your might and they'll just turn around and alert everybody. Use your gun every single time, no exceptions. The AI isn't great and will walk over to your exact position if they spot a pixel of you for even a millisecond. The sound design is poor with your character's footsteps being incredibly loud, giant mechanical metal airlock-esque doors making no noise whatsoever when opened or closed, and music changing volume at seemingly random.
Ugh. I don't want to, I really don't want to, but I think I hate this game. I wish there was a good stealth action game for VR and this one looks like it could really be a winner but every single time I come back to it I'm driven away by a dozen different smaller problems making the game generally annoying to spend time with.
