Multiplayer unplayable at this point
First, if you buy this just to play official Online matchmaking, don't. You will get ddosed eventually, and if someone really hates you, worse could happen to your system.
The campaign is alright, I guess.
If you still want to experience multiplayer safely, play on Plutonium servers. But even for that, you don't even need to own the game on Steam, you could just browse the web for a bit and "own" it differently for free.
Owning it on Steam doesn't change anything, since playing Plutonium doesn't launch the Steam version of the game, therefore it won't track hours and such.
It's just laughable that even on sale, activision still charges $20 for this broken mess.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II is a very fun game. The story is good, with some parts in the past and some in the future. This is the first game I played with multiple branch story-lines, so your choices really matter and can change the ending. It makes me play longer to see all the different paths. The graphics are a little old, but the single-player mode is still exciting. If you like shooting games with a deep story, you will enjoy this one.
The story for Call of Duty: Black Ops II was primarily written by David S. Goyer and Dave Anthony. David S. Goyer is well-known for his work in Hollywood, including writing for films like The Dark Knight trilogy. He helped bring a cinematic feel to the game’s narrative, while Dave Anthony, who also directed the game, contributed significantly to the storyline and its branching paths.
It has an impressive story that is connected to the previous game. In my opinion, this one had a better story. There are different endings depending on the choices you make during the game. The graphics look the same as the previous game. In fact, we can say that all the mechanics are the same. As a negative, I can say this: The price is very high for a game made in 2012, I recommend you wait for the discounts. My score is 9/10.
The Black Ops 2 campaign is the best of the franchise. The story is so gripping. The plot twists. The voice acting.
How you perform in the game has a big effect on what happens later on. absolutely worth a playthrough.

Leaving a negative review as there is a bug that occurs after the Celerium mission where the game crashes giving an "Unhandled exception caught" error. There seem to be quite a few reasons why this error occurs but the big one that pertained to me was simply having too many friends on my steam friend list, which seems to cause issues with the leaderboards that appear in game thus causing the crash. When the game crashes and is relaunched you have to complete the mission again as it didn't register the completion of the mission.
The fact that this is still an issue is quite absurd, this occurs on steam deck as well and can also occur when you set steam to offline mode. The only way I was able to circumvent the problem was by downloading a save file online from someone who already completed the game, thus allowing me to go through each mission as if I was "replaying" the missions, doing this means the choices you make in game (which are integral to determining your ending) as well as getting post game credits/cinematics won't occur as you have to go through the game organically to experience those.
The campaign is pretty good and I recall zombies being a lot of fun, I would not trust MP for any CoD over 10 years old.
Got this game for the zombie mode until i realized I had to pay for the other good maps. Would still recommend only because the campaign and multiplayer.
Classic really good game.
Two complaints, pretty expensive for 12 year old game, and the flying in the jet and wingsuit were really hard one keyboard and mouse.
Amazing Campaign and all multiplayer shenanigans. I recommend buying ONLY on a sale, the games way too overpriced for a campaign and multiplayer that you can get hacked by. Overall its a good 8/10
"Liked the campaign as much as Titanfall."
Game's multiplayer server is dead and they decide to increase the price for no reason
Developer of the Decade
The last COD that achieve so much. The best COD ever made to be honest. Campaign, multiplayer and zombies is a prefect game that can't be replicated. The true experience of playing COD. Get this at a discount, not worth for $60 USD but worth the TIME!
peak campaign, activision can't make another one of these games! zombies and mp was also rlly good, got the best memories
Best COD game of all time.
The price is dogs### but hey, when it's on sale, it's worth it.
slaps pretty hard, only complaint is that when i was playing offline, it didn't give me achievements and now I have to restart like 4 missions to get them. Otherwise, pretty good game
pretty much unplayable, it doesn't stop crashing each time I finish a section of the main story and randomly freezes in mid game. Have to play it on a windowed screen, so I could be able to close it when that happens. Pretty much a huge dissapointment.
Multiplayer crashes every time, making multiplayer unplayable.
Note: This is a singe-player review about the campaign, I don't play COD multiplayer.
This has aged rather badly. If you've played today's great open world games, this one almost feels like an on-rails shooter. It's a bit better than the original Black Ops though, you sometimes have small choices (e.g., whether you want to provide sniper cover from high above or get in close). Also there are different story outcomes and characters you meet depending on what choices you make in some of the missions.
Pros:
* varied maps . Some include special sections in vehicles, with bad controls though.
* graphics are okay for the age, and it works with modern screen resolutions (2560x1440 in my case)
* mindless shooting is fun for a while
* you can choose your favorite weapon for the most part of the game and use guns dropped by enemies for variety.
Cons:
* very restricted level design and gameplay: you rush forward in a tiny corridor, while lots scripted stuff (mostly explosions) happens all around you. No exploration, no secrets, no point in looking left or right (health auto-regenerates, there is no armor afaict), just rush fowards to next waypoint that is always 15m ahead and updates all the time. the game micro-manages your every step.
* annoying cut scenes
* gets repetitive very quickly
* all that yelling and military/ego/overly manly stuff you would expect from a COD game
Neutral:
* hilarious story
Overall 6/10.

I love this game so much but please do not buy it. This game has a terrible remote code exploit that let exploiters install trojans or other malware onto your computer through the game. The developers have known this for years and refuse to fix it. Please report it to be taken down to prevent people from unknowingly install malware.
i miss when all the games werent hacked so bad, but the zombies and campaign is enough to still like it. should be cheaper though, like other people i would value this at 35-40 dollars. NOT full price from original release. I checked back because i was bored of the maps i have and wanted to get og origins and maybe even die rise but now seeing the prices, idk. even though i said i reccomend the game in the bottom, i only reccomend if they lower the price to 35-40 because your missing a whole 1/3 of the game with the multiplayer dead. thats my review :3
NOT WORTH THE $$$$ today, should be worth 10 or less, servers are dead and its crazy how greedy activision is.
may be a lengendary game but its long past now
Still my favorite Call of Duty iv every played as of this review(2024). I really hope my kids will play this game or at least understand/appreciate the beauty and simplicity of this COD. Great maps that feature my favorite 3 lane system. Most newer maps have a very messy layout which is ok but i again, i juts prefer this and makes for great gameplay for most gamemodes. Amazing weapon camo's to grind for, fantastic scorestreaks, super simple and balanced create-a-class system unlike today's cods where you run around with 48957943 attachments smh. Just when you you think i couldn't glaze this game anymore I have yet to talk about zombies. Iv been a zombies player since WAW days and this is definitely a close second only to BO3. Not gonna get too deep into that but i would definitely recommend this game to any FPS enjoyer. Shame this game is dead....
Fuck you for a full price came thats over 12 years old. Great game, terrible port. Game kept crashing and isn't exactly fully optimized for keyboard. Some parts that have slower movement are 100x slower with keyboard. but whatever. The only reason why I bought this was to go through all the black ops games on computer.
get it if you're desperate for it, it's one of the best in the series imo
however, at that price, you're getting slapped in the face and kicked in the groin. when i first saw the change, i legit thought steam was glitching and showing me the price of one of the premium editions, or the season pass or something.
no excuse for raising the price on a 10+ year old game.
The campaign is actually pretty good for a call of duty game. Once in my life i can write an actual review on a campaign. But this game also has shortcuts to launch multiplayer and zombies. There isnt any DLC in this version, *as far as im aware* but this game is still a good purchase, just skip the multiplayer tho, too much modders. This game is an all time classic.
While the original version of this game is an arguable must play, this pc port is not. from crashes to freezing, to even slight screen tearing. this pc port is pretty bad, of course don't buy this game at 60 as you should aim for a decent discount for this game. ps. not even the multiplayer works regularly without having to mod it.
Campaign: arguably the best CoD has given us (contested with BO1 and MW2), nothing can beat the choices/multiple endings and custom loadouts where you can complete challenges to unlock stuff. Section is one of the most underrated CoD protagonists IMO.
Multiplayer: Felt very oriented towards fun and partying up, being mostly balanced and having a separate playlist for competitive players as well as great maps, weapons and customization.
Zombies: Very mixed bag but gets points for creativity and innovation, Mob of the Dead and Origins started a lot of the trends many players dislike and the 2025 maps are definitely not for beginners, this was the last gasp of classic Zombies glory before the overly complicated nonsense of BO3 - current day Zombies.
I didn't like it at first, however, surprisingly, the further you progress the more interesting the game becomes. There're definitely some boring segments, such as forced stealth or scripted scenes when you keep getting killed by an unknown something located who knows where (that usually happens during missions where you fly an aircraft) but there're way more cinematic scenes than in the original Black Ops game as well as the story is more dramatic.
What surprised me even more was that the game has several (eight, if I'm not mistaken) endings. Although I got the worst of them, it was still worth it as it shows you what happens when you spare a lunatic. I like that you actually can influence the course of events.
Also, the 'true' ending which you get after the credits is hilarious!
This is a fantastic game that is unfortunately afflicted by a lot of technical issues (mainly crashing) There is a bug which will prevent you from completing a mission early in the campaign, which is caused by having more than 59 friends on steam. Simple stuff like this is somewhat aggrivating, there were many times I was working on challenges and the game would crash, erasing my hard earned progress. Still, this is a fantastic game that has an absolutely fantastic zombies mode with some very unique mechanics.
Do not Play Multiplayer, as RCE Exploits are still prevalent on PCE.
Still one of the best games back in my childhood. If someone sees this i would say get this game and enjoy the fun we had as kids. 100% nothing can beat this game.
This game Is the best! The people behind this, was passionate about what they were doing for SURE!
The story 9/10
GamePlay 10/10
Note: I advice you to buy it when it's on a sale. And I advice to play starting from black ops 1, because that's what I am doing, playing the whole thing from the beginning (:
very cool epic game with cool mp and cool zombies very cool awesome amazing game story very good and horny i am after play game because of all hot lady like woods i get wood when i see him im so happy i buyd game it so good yes buy now even 100$ very good price i buy again for family when back from war thank
Game is great, but unplayable online due to security issues. Do not play public multiplayer, you run a risk of someone injecting code into your PC. To play online just use plutonium. Activision shouldn't be allowed to put a game with this bad of a security risk on steam.
Tried to finish the third mission 3 times and the game crashes without saving every time
I have played this game since back in 2013 when I had it for the PS3, I just recently decided to re purchase the game and replay the campaign, this is without a doubt the best Call of Duty that has ever been produced and will probably never be topped. This game is simply perfect.
IMMEDIATE WARNING:
Critical Security Risks in Older Call of Duty Titles
- STOP PLAYING NOW.
YOUR PC IS AT RISK.
If you're playing older Call of Duty games on Steam, you're vulnerable to severe security exploits that can compromise your system, steal personal data, and put your device at risk of malicious activities.
Remote Code Execution (RCE) and Remote Access Trojan (RAT) exploits have been identified in:
-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
-Call of Duty: Ghosts
-Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
-Call of Duty: Black Ops 1
-Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Hackers can:
-Gain access to your PC, even if you're not in a lobby
-Execute arbitrary code, steal personal data, and compromise system security
-Utilize your device for malicious activities, such as DDOS attacks, audio/video recording, and credential theft
Activision has neglected to address these issues, leaving users exposed to potential harm. The store page descriptions are misleading, and purchasing these games can put your computer at risk.
Recommendations:
1. IMMEDIATELY STOP PLAYING these games online.
2. REFRAIN FROM PURCHASING older Call of Duty titles on Steam.
3. REPORT THESE GAMES AS HARMFUL and write reviews to warn others.
4. DEMAND ACTION FROM ACTIVISION to address these critical security issues and provide safe gaming experiences.
Protect your PC and personal data. Stay informed and cautious.
