Ugly and unbalanced. One level will be a snooze and then the next will have enough bullets to topple a third world country.
Every level is as follows:
Spawn in the middle of a bunch of enemies
use arrow keys/wasd to dodge their projectiles while using your mouse to shoot at them
try to pick up a power up here and there.
This bullet hell is very by-the-numbers, and in the couple dozen levels I've played no particularly interesting enemies, bosses, or modes presented themselves, beyond the sort-of-unique ability to blow yourself up on purpose without losing a life sometimes.
I bought it years ago, because it reminded me of Geometry Wars. Once played, I didn't think much of its lacklustre design and roughness in execution compared to Geometry Wars, or even Mutant Storm or Blast Factor (on PS3) which it has more in common with as you progress through the game's levels by clearing waves. I just gave it another try after so many years and frankly, it seemed to have more potential than I remembered. Maybe because of the update the dev made for the game?
But holy moly! The music and SFX audio levels are way too loud and clip like crazy. It makes me frightful of damaging my speaker setup.
So, on this 5 star rating scale:
★★★★★ Loved it / Recommended
★★★★☆ Liked it / Recommended
★★★☆☆ It was OK / Not recommended
★★☆☆☆ Disliked it / Not recommended
★☆☆☆☆ Hated it / Not recommended
It was a ★☆☆☆☆ for me and the main culprit is the audio.
Pretty basic dual analog shooter, but fun. Worth a penny.
Do me a favor, do it, do it.
An average game all around. I stayed in the centre of the screen and circled fired for most of the first 12 levels. I got bored by the 20th. Doesn't look too fancy, which isn't a huge problem, but playability is rather dull too. I am not sure if I'll bother to give it another go.
This was the first game I bought through the Steam digital storefront. I still go back to it every now and then. I'm partial to it.
Very unpolished game. The sound effects are painful, the music annoying and repetitive. The graphics are okay but nothing stellar. Gameplay is narrow and repetitive, focusing mostly on avoiding projectives on a static rectangular level while collecting as much score as possible from pickups.
There are lots of better games in this genre, like the geometry wars series.
The name should be changed to bullet hell - because that's all it is. I refer to the genre, not some explanation of the game. Although, I guess to some extent they're more or less the same thing. Bullet Candy is another asteroids/geometry wars/miscellaneous newgrounds top down bullet hell shooter. It's pretty much the same as most of them with a few difficult challenges/achievements.
Nothing special here. Move on.
This wouldn't be a terrible game if it had been free. It's not a total loss for people who are into into twin stick arcade shooters but this is no Geometry Wars. Its extremely simple, its messy (hard to tell what is going on sometimes because of the clutter) and there is a stupifyingly obnoxious difficulty spike.
First 30 levels are easy, you'll lose occassionally but eventually reaching the 'checkpoints' every 5 levels, 30 is a breeze to reach, it'll take you 20 minutes maybe. Once you try and reach 35 however the game becomes a monster of absurdly and seemingly unfair difficulty. The change in difficulty is like night and day, like so bad that you wonder if they guy spent even 10 minutes to play test.
You should probably stay away.
It's pretty fun, but this is practically on the level of online flash games. It's not quite worth the purchase, even at its cheap price.
First of all, really in the early stages of the game, it was not as exciting as it seemed, after the recent update has improved everything, including the gameplay that was even easier than before.
Only recommend to people who like ship and bullet hell games. If you are not one of these people, you will find this a horrible game and so do not recommend it...
Honestly Not worth it, & mostly due to the nature of the music & audio being very painful & .... honestly bad for anything but setups that can filter out bad base, terrible audio the levels of bootlegged media bad (not filled with people talking, but with.. ... poor sound quality.

For a better version, do not buy until patched/upgraded... even with a high discount price. Money better spent on the better version.
utterly .... unforgivable that one would have to use audio correction to make it not painful to listen to.
Outside that the shooting is nice, fairly easy to setup, & isn't to bad just it's done far better in other games and their audio is great. (geometry wars:Retro evolved) which is just as cheap on steam & a much better title.
(will update review if this game ever becomes worth playing, as of now I'll just use the Gamers gate version which is far better in most ways, despite it's own problem)
Bad game, terrible graphics. non anti-aliased sprites. The sprites lack originality and remind me of lego technic pieces. The art style is unclean.
This game might not be fore everyone. Hence some of the negative reviews. But if your into twitch shooters, STG's/SHMUPs, or games seemed to be inspired by Jeff Minter, this game is for you.
A fun, bright, hectic and mostly fair arcade arena style bullet hell shooter up until you reach wave 47, which honestly seems impossible. I can find no way to beat it with out dying, and one of the ahievements requires beating the game without dying. There's also a "Perfect" edition available on the Dev's site and the game I played recently looks slightly different from what I played the first time I installed. Fun game for the price, but I think only the best of shmup players can beat Wave 47, and I consider myself pretty decent.
Interesting little shooter. I feel like it would belong better on a mobile platform such as an Android handset. Runs well on netbooks, low cpu/gpu ussage, so if you have a netbook or a low end computer you want to dick around on this could be a game for you. The developer honestly doesn't feel like who put all that much thought into this game, but its still an interesting title to pick up and play now & then. Don't expect a full fledged game, or even some of the interesting features we have come to love and expect from indy developers. This is a bare bones game, don't expect any suprises. It is also worth noting that it doesn't seem to want to work with my 360 controller. Sad day. The keyboard/mouse controlls seem a bit awkward, but it works well when set to keyboard only. It also has a joystick option, but I don't have a joystick anywhere to test this. Interesting little title. ~PR0XIDIAN
Damn, I am not good at shumps, and this one beat me up. It feels good, controls good, and looks nice. However too many purples and pinks for me: I've played and beaten many other Shumps, but this one had me down at round 25 - I got there in 10 mins and spent another 10 mins trying to continue it again again, and decided I didn't feel like getting my ass handed to me all day. It would be TONS easy if they just gave it controls like SMASH TV.... then I would own at this game, but unfortunately if gives you the mouse cursor from your position, which is actually awful in use if you've played old Shumps and games like SMASH TV or TOTAL CARNAGE. Anyways, worth it on a sale if you like dodging bullets all day.
If this is candy, I don't want it. The goal is to kill enemies and get through as many waves as you can before you die. But it's missing something... Actually, not something, it's missing a lot. It misses personality, polish and fun. Do yourself a favor, skip this one.

Bullet Candy is a decent time killer but lacks the polish to make it a truly addicting game. Honestly there is nothing really unique about this game. Everything it does, beat hazard or geometry wars probably does better. The only “new/outstanding” feature that bullet candy offers is the ability to collect pills floating around the maps to auto kills every enemy ship on the map instantly. This is of course no easy task as the game gets more chaotic towards the end game. Like Beat Hazard you have to dodge ships and bullets while destroying your adversaries. This game is of course not a cake walk, like beat hazard and many other top down shooters, dodging a bullet even by just a millimeter can save your life. Overall an ok time killer, but if you already had beat hazard and are short on money, don’t waste your time with this game.
I love this simple little game. No higher level thinking here, just turn off the brain and watch the pretty explosions. I will start playing and an hour later still be smiling like an idiot.
