Описание

Canvas Quest is a turn-based JRPG made in RPGMaker MV. The game features an artstyle based around poorly made digital and physical art, featuring stickman characters and an abundance of obvious perfect circles and lines. Journey with Bob and friends to rid the world of the Evil King. However, things aren't always as simple as they seem.

Bob is an Average Joe who lives in Circle Town with his wife, Suzy. His only real taste of action is the training he has just signed up for. When Bob comes home from Day 1 of training to find a note saying Suzy has been kidnapped by the "Evil King," Bob rushes off to save his lover, meeting friends and foes along the way.

Canvas Quest is a game where experimentation is heavily encouraged. New spells and moves that characters learn may be useless. They may only be useful in certain situations or when paired up with other moves or spells. They may even be super powerful and useful. It's up to the player to determine what works best, as nothing is certain to tell you the best strategy.

Sure, you have slimes and bats, but those aren't your only foes! How about a slime in a mech suit? What about a tornado with a face or a small moon? Canvas Quest has those bases covered.

This game is over three years old now, and I've appreciated every individual fan! You all mean the world to me, and who knows? You might want to keep an eye out for something special very soon!

I had originally given this game a negative review since I had a progression blocking glitch happen to me, however the developer has been extremely helpful in addressing this issue for me and was able to personally guide me through a solution so I could complete the game to 100% and finish my achievements as well. There are some design choices that are rough around the edges but there's actually an interesting and challenging battle system with a pretty good variety of enemies and equipment that force you to think about your choices tactically. If you're someone like me who loves the JRPG genre and graphics aren't something you fixate on, there's fun to be had here if you want a smaller scale adventure with a rewarding progression system and something a bit different.

Surprisingly Addictive!
To be blunt, I'm not an RPG fan, I usually consider games like Final Fantasy too long to play with a convoluted story. Which probably explains why I like this one, because it is so simple and basic. I only planned to play for an hour, but ended up playing over a few days. It was surprisingly decent with good characters, enemies, and locations. Definitely worth it for anyone who just wants to play a simple RPG.

RPG Maker strikes again!

Canvas Quest is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Unlike most RPG Maker "games", this replaces the usual low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker with MS-Paint garbage, zero effort went into creating the game assets. An asset flip would be of higher quality. This dismal presentation is coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction.

The plot is painfully generic, as you adventure to fight the "Evil King". Just like zero effort went into the game visual presentation, zero effort went into the content used to fill out the RPG Maker templates/construction kit entries.

The artwork here is terrible, it's a blend of old retro pixel "art" used as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics, and some of the most amateurish MS-Paint style drawings I've ever hurt my eyes on. This is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can do graphics properly and lack of talent. The overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result of this inadequacy. The developer jumps the gun on the poor quality by directly admitting it, which still leaves the question, why is it good for gamers when developers don't bother doing their job properly? When developers dump badly made games onto Steam on purpose, this is a deliberate act to pollute the marketplace.

This is harmful to Steam, to gamers, and the gaming industry. This pollution takes up marketing space and exposure for genuine developers who did the right thing and make sincere efforts to produce quality games. It makes it harder for gamers to find those genuinely made games.

As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. The "art" has already been discussed, but the gameplay itself, because this is an RPG Maker game, is also completely awful. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers.

Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger.

The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.

Canvas Quest is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.

Note: Because this is more of a "joke" game, made badly with the hope of going viral because it's "so bad it's good" (but it isn't good at all), there's nothing here to offer to serious gamers. Like all awful/joke games, all the comedians come out of the woodwork. The vast majority of the reviews for this game are joke reviews, such as "this game cured my cancer, saved my marriage, changed my life" etc. The developer also admits to review manipulation. The positive review score for this game should be disregarded.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer decided to breach guidelines for no apparent reason than to attack the solid points of my review, while confirming other defects in this lazy RPG Maker trash. The game was, supported by raw data from SteamDB, an abject and utter failure. Why has the developer decided to breach Valve guidelines when forced to face the harsh truth?

The developer tries to excuse their utter failure and rejection by gamers as an attempt to "diverge from expectations". This is one of the strangest copes I've ever seen, but it changes none of the facts about this failure, and certainly doesn't improve the quality of the "game". I'll have to remember that next time I screw up so badly I could die from shame. I wonder if this line would work: "Your honour, I am not guilty, I simply attempted to diverge from expectations". What a joke.

The developer admits they lack the artistic ability to make something that looks like a real game, yet persisted in dumping this here knowing full well it's of unacceptably poor standard. Why is this good for gamers? Now we see the real reason the developer is so offensive. This game is not made for gamers, he made it for himself, to stroke his own ego so he can pretend to be a real game developer when he already admitted he's incapable of that (hence the use of RPG Maker, which is designed for children to use). When "developers" don't consider gamers, only themselves, the result is this kind of harmful pollution infesting Steam.

The developer demands that the children's toy, RPG Maker, is not abjectly terrible, another cope. No AAA game has ever been made with this crapware, it's intended to teach aspects of development and to make toys to pass around with friends. It should never be used for industry game development FOR PROFIT as the "developer" has done here. The developer depends their position with a list of UTTER CRAP RPG Maker asset flips, Final Fantasy rip-offs made with a children's toy.

In an attempt to discredit the facts and validity of my review the developer demands that the game must be played for several hours before determining any objective facts. Apparently, before deciding a carton of rancid milk is sour, the developer thinks we must drink the whole carton before we can tell anyone the milk has gone off. Rubbish. Playing a bad game for longer will not make the graphics better, cause the code to change, controls to become better, or fix any bugs or other defects in it. So why insist the game needs to be played longer? This is simply psychological denial on the part of the developer. If they can attack the review, they can pretend their game doesn't suffer from the defects this review highlights. This is outright delusion, unfortunately. It does not take very long for the defects in this game to become apparent. Playing the game for longer will not change them.

Finally: A bombshell. The developer admits to review manipulation, having had "close friends" write fake positive reviews in an attempt to mislead gamers for profit. You can see the absolute amorality of the developer here, the intellectual bankruptcy... all so he can stroke his ego dumping RPG Maker crap on Steam and making gaming worse for everyone.

My review stands unaltered, and I'm considering reporting this to Valve due to the admission of review manipulation.

Charming crappy MS Paint art style and spicy dank memes, what more could you want? Controller support? Cuz it has that too. Love this kind of unique RPG maker stuff, it's why I love the genre so much. 49 cents? Pff, pick it up and give it a try, especially if you like memes and that brand of humor, if you don't, eh you'll wanna give it a pass likely. Me? Love this kinda stuff.

I did however run into this really strange error, a black screen that just said this: TypeError Failed to execute ‘attachShader’ on ‘WedGLRenderingContest’: parameter 2 in not of type ‘WebGLShader’.

If the publisher reads this please tell me how to avoid this cuz it's a really fun game but it sucks I lost some of my grinding time :< I still recommend it though as I'm sure it's just an honest glitch the creator(s) can patch.

Also SPOILER: I'm stuck on the part where I beat the boss in the prison stage near the beginning when the 00:30 timer goes down and I have no idea what I need to do, there's no exit and unlocking the cell door with the family in does nothing, please help!

Its really not a bad game, sure it looks crappy on the outside and doesnt have 4k graffics. But it's not the graffics that count its the story.

The story is a little cheesy yet has a good element to it. Its a little funny here and there. Also the story has a good plot and moves along quite well. Battles can be hard, while the game can be giving at times it can taketh away even faster.

I like it.

This game is really enjoyable, it's funny and actually has a nice plot. For only 2-3 dollars you could really have some fun with this game. I'd recommend it to just about anyone who enjoys RPGs or something like that. The game isn't to hard and there is very little lag, and when there is it's probably just my computer anyway. I'd like it a little more if there is WASD controls but that's just me. So a very enjoyable game and I've only gotten up to about chapter one and can't wait to play the rest of the game. :D

For a game that has been made by only 1 person (I think) this game is great. I think it also has a lot of potential, and I personally can't wait to see what the game turns into. Some may think that this game was made lazily, but that's not true. The game has once again a great story and some people don't like the way the game looks, but how I see it that doesn't change the gameplay and the gameplay is really what I desire most in a game. I can see that Chao (the creator of Canvas Quest) put effort in this game and I respect that. Not to mention the game has been frequently updated and that's exiting too.
