I wanted to like this game it seemed promising so I picked it up during early access. The game feels very unfinished and I somehow soft locked my progress with not investing my gold in the right crafts before making a discovery, I've spent literal hours exploring looking for more gold that would be accessible to my character.
There have not been any updates since the cartography update, and the game definitely needs a bit more polish.
I got this game at an 80% discount for $2 USD since someone said it has heavy Thaumcraft vibes, and I was excited to get started delving into a bunch of research on new things I hadn't seen before. Well, let's just say that this game deserves its mixed ratings.
It feels like they took some lore (which is good, the science actually makes sense) and tried to turn this idea into a game, but they didn't know the first thing about how to design a good game.
When you die randomly to something you can't even see and the game makes it clear that the default experience is hardcore because the game is supposed to be easy enough, but then they go out of their way to make everything easy EXCEPT for this one encounter with NO notification that you're low on health?
"Alcor has claimed you." No death sequence, just a fade to black after you get hit by something that does 60+ damage out of nowhere while everything else has been doing 3-5 damage, and no, I'm not exaggerating. Worms do low damage and even lower poison damage. The scary Ossi's you fight? Only take you down by 1/3 of your total health during the entire fight while you just sit there and hold the F key to attack them. Speaking of combat...
Combat? What combat? You literally hold a key and your character chases and attacks the enemy automatically. There's no strategy. You can't "hit and run" either. Trust me, I tried. It's stats vs. stats. Resource gathering? Hold this key, and your character automatically collects all nearby resources, finding the closest one that you can harvest and harvesting it. You just... Hold a button. Just like combat. I get adding QoL things, but this? It's too much. Makes the game that much less fun.
Oh yeah, you'll also get constant notifications every 30 seconds that "I don't feel so good". Every time you pick something up, you get a "This resource did this thing," or "Your physical training allows you to pick up more!"... Every, single, time. Without fail. You numb yourself to any notifications that might actually be important, which, of course, during my gameplay, there wasn't any.
The developers have a great idea. I just really wish it was executed better. If you end up playing this game, do NOT follow their suggestions to play on Adventure mode. You don't want to get halfway through the game and lose everything due to poor design choices.
Gameplay and story is quite simple, but boy, is it original.
Using science and MacGyver skills to understand and bend an exotic word's magic to your will is a great concept.
Decent artwork and awesome OST create a fitting, weird, alien atmosphere.
Weirdest crafting tree I've ever seen. But in a good way. Expect the unexpected.
Gave it a second playthrough after a two-year break and still liked it.
