During the attack on a mysterious facility in the sky, an experiment called Rane gets the chance to escape. However, to make it outside she'll have to pass through all the dangerous areas of the facility, fight hostile genetic experiments, and defeat the ones who've held her captive.
After having been contained there for years, she'll use the full extent of her abilities to make it out and gain her freedom!
What is Geneticognito?
Geneticognito is a 2D platformer with combat and stealth mechanics. Levels consist of hazards that can either damage Rane directly, or detect her. If Rane is detected, security robots will appear through doors, and the exit door to the level locks itself. Rane may fight the security robots and shoot them down, but unlimited amounts of robots will continue spawning while in Alert state. So stealth is important!

Geneticognito is an action stealth platformer where you play as someone held captive in a mysterious facility, taking advantage of the fact it's under attack in an effort to escape it. There are two main aspects to the game, the first being stealth. Navigating through the facility, you must avoid various environmental hazards such as lasers, jets of fire and tentacled monstrosities hiding within sections of water. You must also avoid being detected by searchlights and yellow beams because otherwise you'll trip the alarm, the exit will lock and security drones will be dispatched to hunt you down. This leads to the second aspect, combat. You're equipped with an attack drone of your own that you use to destroy the security drones and containers that contain health, plus you also use it to fight against the various bosses that will block your way.
The game is divided into areas, each area containing several levels. The first level's level design is something I appreciate because I can see how it gradually teaches the player the different mechanics of the game, going from movement and interaction, to shooting, to avoiding detection, to avoiding hazards, before they're all combined together to test the player on what they've learned. Each area also does a good job at establishing an atmosphere of a dark and oppressive environment, with each one adding their own flair to it: the first setting up the overall feel, the second being based around water, the third revolving around fire and the final area giving glimpses to the outside due to the damage done to the facility as a result of being under attack.
At the end of each area is a boss. The first boss is pathetically easy, the next two are a little more challenging (though the second moreso than the third) and the last two will be responsible for the most deaths out of all the bosses, as expected. The final boss in particular took me many tries to defeat the first time I played the game. On subsequent playthroughs, though, he was much easier to handle since I was used to his attack patterns. Speaking of which, the bosses are pretty simple; only having one or two attacks each, with either erratic jumping or sheer volume of projectiles providing any semblance of challenge. The final boss is a little more complicated, since his jumps generate an attack of their own each time he lands.
It has a good soundtrack. There's not many games that I'll listen to the entire soundtrack of, but this is one of them. Each area has a different variation of the same theme to give the impression that you're still in the same place, just in different parts of it. It's also dynamic, with the music shifting into muffled variants whenever you go underwater. The main theme has a memorable melody, which is also used in the track used for the first three bosses. The penultimate boss theme, which is the second theme used in the trailer and what ultimately tipped my hand into buying this game in the first place, is my favourite track in the game. The two themes of the final boss are good too, though.
The game does have a few flaws, however. The stealth aspect of the game can be nullified by rushing to the end of the level, camping by the exit door and destroying the security drones until the exit opens. Perhaps making it so all the yellow beams change to red lasers ala Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus and having more drones spawn at once to add a greater consequence for being detected could solve this issue? The bosses could also use some improvement since they are, as mentioned before, pretty simplistic. Some additional attack patterns and tactics would be a welcome addition.
Despite these flaws, the game is only £1.99 and for that price offers an overall fun experience. It's also worth getting because it's the prelude to another game from the developer I enjoy, Super Gear Quest, and adds additional context to a number of events in that game. It also works in reverse, since the androids mentioned in the beginning cutscene are characters from Super Gear Quest.
A fun little platformer which is well worth the money. I suggest giving it a go if you like playformers :D
I had a little glitch during the final boss though. I somehow went into the floor lol
The game was short, but it was fun! I would love to see more of this, and a story that has more depth.
