The game looked good, but none of the many workarounds I found online would make it work properly with an Oculus Rift S controllers. I should have read the other reviews before buying it, but I didn't suspected that a game released by id software would never have been patched to work happily with one of the worlds best selling PCVR setup that came out less than 2 years later (Or for that matter, be compatible with the original Rift CV1 that had been on sale for about a year when this game came out). This just feels like a huge oversight that must have badly hurt sales.
As it stands, I requested (and got) a refund on this game rather than just holding on to it on the off chance that this seven and a half year old game might get fixed at some point, I reasoned if it was going to get fixed it would have happened already and if a 5 year old headset is too new to be supported it's unlikely that any future headset upgrade I do will get me any closer to being able to play it, so there was no point keeping it.
make it to whare you dout have to telaport and you can just walk
has potential however the fact you need a very specific vr set up to play this left me returning it. its good just not lemme go buy a whole new vr for this single game type good tho
This game is a shit.
Why in the world is smooth turning not a default option?!
And also why is it so hard tweaking to integrate this?
I was not able to do this.
Save some time and don't buy this game!
I love the Doom series but this is the worst VR game I've ever played, and I'm not explaining why
ive thought a bit about how im gonna review this so heres my verdict:
the controls are absolutely clapped, especially on the valve index; this is AFTER i even installed/modded the improved movement system into the game.
Still, this is kinda fun. It certainly has charm to it. If this wasn't so clapped to actually play, id probably find myself replaying the campaign someday.
I really, really wish we could two-hand weapons, but whatever. Its cool.
Definitely not worth full price though, get it on sale, for both of our sake.
you need speacal controllers for this game
doom 2016 but in vr just get it man its so fun and realistic graphics are good if you want to feel like doomguy this is it even tho your not playing as doomguy in this game
my priest walked in on me playing this :(
no smooth locomotion
good
Worst doom ive ever played controls were hot garbage.
Missing important locomotion settings - SNAP TURN. The game is not playable without it.
Doom VFR... Cool seeing/fighting demons as if they were life sized. like very cool. only issue i have with the game is the control options... there's literally so little you can change. you can't turn at all with a controller. they give you huge guns that block a lot of your view. you can't even two hand anything because left hand is dedicated to holding a grenade/grenade launcher... and the game expects you to tp to get across every gap. my friends did tell me it was TP Movement first... but its not good imo.
I had no idea a AAA publisher could make a POS like this. I actually never played it... because the controls were so un-intuitive and broken, I couldn't proceed out of the start of the game and I immediately refunded it.
when u slam ur head against ur key board bvghncy vcbgfh vbgcfhtn vfgbchtyr c
I'm going to sound crazy, but I actually like this game. DOOM VFR is a good experience if you tweak the settings enough, the game is brutal, fun, and fast paced. You can hate me for liking it, but I'm still going to like it.
Just buy this game on sale and come in with the expectations that its just a mediocre alternate doom 2016 campaign in VR with no ability to turn unless you have an outdated HTC Vive. Its really not as bad as people say it is but its not the magnum opus of doom or VR games as a whole. If you apparently own a Quest 3 it wont work but I'm not dumb enough to buy another useless headset when my current one also works so test that at your own risk of deadass $3.78 MAX 💀 (you can also just refund the game too so I don't see the problem)
a really good gamengl, the only thing I have against it is that it is way too short and theres no too many gorekills. plus the ending was mid. but fun af to play. I hope they make a new one
such potential wasted do not buy this game
Unplayable. This should be removed from the store. First game I've refunded on Steam.
its just awful
I'm unsure how this game was constructed or how it got to the state that it is, part of the blame could be on Steam's overhaul for its VR, ID Software or Bethesda's lack of engagement with it, etc.
But I know this. It's not entirely a good time and definitely disorienting.
I was able to get used to it and get it working well with my Quest 2 thanks in part to Steam Input. The game however completely hated whenever I brought up any kind of overlay whether it'd be Steam's or Meta's and will lag so incredibly hard until I exit out of the overlay.
It also loved to crash on level loading. I'm unsure if this is because the game itself was unstable or if my PC had something to do with it; a fix I found sleuthing online was loading a classic level first THEN loading the level I want.
Nearly a quarter of my playtime was trying to just get controls to work and having to do that work around for level loading because the game kept crashing whenever it wanted to. Which is a significant amount since this game is just a 2-3 hour tech demo for id Tech 6 in VR basically.
The game itself is a decent experience. Perhaps my way of playing it via Quest 2 over AirLink wasn't the best but it did get the job done. It can be pretty fun running around killing demons and seeing the sheer size they actually are compared to you. It's a different perspective for sure than Doom (2016). And seeing the levels in detail in VR is really cool.
Unfortunately, the pacing itself is weird and the speed at which you get certain weapons, such as the grenade launcher, is sudden and not telegraphed very well. The game does this whole tutorial for throwing grenades (if you didn't disable the tutorials) only to pretty much throw all that out the window for the second level of the game excluding the hub. You just suddenly pick up the grenade launcher after probably not even bothering with grenades only to realize later that in your left hand is a whole new gun without the game really telling you.
And it's a bit of a shame too because the game later also changes out the grenade launcher for a BFG variant with very limited ammo. So your left trigger just gets relegated to a panic button with no way to switch back. It could've been really fun just spamming explosives around, blowing up and shredding demons but then for nearly half the game, it takes that away from you. It went from throwing grenades being part of a tutorial to just getting a launcher for the grenades (which made it more fun to use them) to not even bothering with grenades entirely. The game, outside of being a quick VR experience for Doom, could've made a better name for itself if it just let me play around more with the grenades but no.
The telefragging replacing glory kills is a neat concept. I think it makes sense from the middle ground of wanting to be creative and efficient with development. I do have to mention that it's a big shame how you can't do something like a custom glory kill where you get to rip a demon apart in your own way. Now THAT would've also helped the game's reputation. Instead, the best the game does to emulate that is telefragging when they're stunned and placing berserks everywhere so that you kind of get the feeling of ripping the demon apart yourself with your fists.
The story is.... Eh. I doubt its canon considering you fight the Cyberdemon here too which the Slayer kills twice in a row in his own campaign. The ending twist of Samuel shutting you down does make for a bit of interesting insight to what would later be implied/explained in Eternal's DLCs but it's likely the story wasn't that far ahead yet when this game was made.
This is at best, a fun experience that lets you explore some of Doom 2016's enviroments in a new way.
At it's worst, it's a big headache inducer. It tells a lot that only 6% of people who have played a 2 hour game have beaten it. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really itching for a nu-Doom fix and happen to have a VR headset.
Ran like a charm for me on the quest 3. I didn't follow any guides or do any modifications to the game. The controller layout it teaches you assumes a controller scheme like my old htc Vive, and the teleportation movement mechanic is jenky to get ahold of vs standard movement on a joy stick but I still had a blast and beat the campaign in under 4 hours. Bit short but if you get this on sale, are a doom fan, and don't mind some jenk it is a grand time.
the controls are hrd to master it doesnt eveb show local contoller bindigs u have to guess from the guide
Im glad they didnt forget the most important aspect...
Unplayable, it's insulting that they continue to sell this.
its ass it hurts my head
people were not fucking around when they said this was not a good VR game just get something else not even good in 2025
A decent VR game with some fun combat, but is dragged down a bit by some clunky movement and a short length. Cool for Doom fans, but not necessary for casuals.
Pretty fun once you get it working. I just had to follow this guide to get it to work on quest, works perfectly. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2736094459
its really easy to fix the jank in the controls just by using the steam vr controller binds modifier
I liked playing through this game, a lot. it was challenging, fast paced, and visually beautiful. The weapons of Doom are second to none, and this iteration of the game is no exception. The Telefrag feels SO good in VR! I prefer games to have no cutscenes, and Doom got close.
But the fucking controls are unbelievable on the index. It is absolutely crazy go nuts bad. They should've put in support for keybindings for index, and fuck them for not doing it. The weapon wheel is horrible to use. It sucks so much. The teleportation is crucial, and so frustrating on index. The touchpad on my left controller stopped working while I was making my way through Doom. None of the games in my heavy rotation use that control, so I'm 95% sure I broke it trying to make Doom VFR's teleport work reliably.
If you really really want to play Doom in VR, then you should definitely play this at a deep discount. May god have mercy on your soul.
The buggiest game I've ever played. If I can get the sound working then the game just quits. Sheesh what drek.
Although gameplay alone is absolutely fun (though very short - finished in around 3 hours), I can not recommend buying this. Rarely can you see a game this bugged and unfinished. Crashing constantly.
TLDR: Its rushed trash.
Now to the actual review:
There are many things wrong with this game, my main problem being the controls, locomotion just feels rushed and you cant even turn properly. The weapon select wheel doesnt work and sometimes gets stuck which is extremely annoying in tense situations and all of that combined with the fact that the story is a thing that, even without having played the game before, you can play through in a day, just dont make it worth 15 bucks.
For point of reference, my, at the time of writing this, 4 hours playtime include playing the campagin multiple times and getting every achievement except for the dollhouse achievement which i would assume would take another hour to complete if you take your time.
I tried to get it running with my Meta Quest 3s, but the game starts without being streamed to the Meta Quest. I’ve tried all possible graphic settings, but nothing worked. Looking at all the other issues in forums, I’ve lost the motivation to keep trying. I can’t recommend a game that doesn’t work.
This game is trash. Beating my head against a wall for an entire day trying to get the right stick to work on a Quest 3. Finally got it working but that was the least of my problems. When I start the game I'd say about 20% of the time I get no audio. 20% of the time I get no video. 40% of the time the controllers don't work at all. Basically I have to start the game a good 5 times EVERY TIME before I get a working run. Then I'm lucky to get an hour worth of play time before the battery dies. AMD 3970X / ASUS 4090, so yeah, it's not my computer!
I tried to play this with my oculus quest 2, and when i started the game the company intros had sound and etc. but the rest of the game was completely mute (I checked every setting, restarted the game 5 times, but nothing). As the controls, only the triggers was functional, the rest of them didn't responded.
I do not recommend to anybody, unless they have that VR hardware that the developers had on thought when they made this game.
You cannot turn with the controller. You can only turn physically. So I had to refund it.
Definitely worth a buy on sale. If you have an Oculus / Quest headset then it is easiest to just use a gamepad.
very awesome game pretty difficult tho
Not the greatest Doom game, a bit difficult to play without a Vive, and it's hard to look around in game, but it isn't the worst game ever. Definitely not underrated, but overhated.
i get to beat the hell out of demons so im happy
Short version: Great game, fun combat, music could be better, very few technical issues.
Long version: Iam bit surprised about reviews commenting on poor technical state or controls. Only issue I have is that game hates minimizing as it will loose controller connection.
Maybe they patched game a lot recently?
But other than that it runs flawlessly, controls are obviously different than PC but except for weapon wheel which is clunky, shooting and killing demons is great fun!
Yes, weapons can be comically large since you are wielding it in one hand, but we dont play doom because of realism.
To be fair, music is meh.. not nearly close to original banger, somehow blending in background. In game puzzles are repeatable and boring, could be skipped entirely. But again, we are here for shooting which works great.
I would highly suggest switching to smooth movement instead of teleportation, and use TP just as finishing move. I absolutely love (little non-story spoiler ahead) including grenade launcher to other hand. Finally I have good reason to use grenades all the time.
About story in doom, its little like story in P movies. Its not important, but you kinda expect it to be there.
Game is fun (Played on Oculus 3), no technical or performance issues here and I have fairly average computer.
Definitely recommend
the game is not finished, first time playing i had bugs. there is a lot of texture bugs.
i really wanted to give the game a chance but its unplayable
So much fun!
The menus are s bit clunky and you need to tinker with the controls a bit but there are easy to follow steps
But it's probably the best vr experience out there, worth it!!
Doesn't tell you in the description it is only designed for 1 type of VR headset and controller so couldnt even get past the tutorial because I didn't have the correct one, will be refunding and never played again, even with the correct headset
Excellent incarnation of Doom in VR. Great controls, great gameplay, great graphics.
Couldn’t play it on quest 1, but it works great on PSVR2.
After playing this title with PS VR (gen 2) back on PS4 and then buying it on sale to play with a proper PC headset (Oculus Quest 2 in my case), it was a much different and more enjoyable experience. But yeah, it is a 2017 title, so you have to keep this in mind.
It might not have the proper graphical glory that modern titles have, and you'll have to map controller bindings on PSVR2 and Quests headsets/controllers. But if you are willing to do some tweaking, it might be a worthwhile experience.
Who is the one responsible for greenlighting the state of the game it released in? I tried playing with a Quest2, I know reviews might vary between each person's experiences, but I just could not get the controls to be in a playable state. I've tried mapping the controls since they weren't bind correctly at first, then configuring the game to enable smooth turning, which unfortunately did not work. I'd rather not waste my time trying to troubleshoot for a relatively short VR game that is ripped off of Doom 2016. Good visuals, I guess, but piss off with whoever designed these controls.
