This game is a lot of fun if you know what you'r doing. Build cars and have a lot of fun finding some.
I worked in an auto repair shop for almost 2 years. The game doesn’t even cover half of what you’ll go through if you decide to try the craft of an auto mechanic. There are no gaskets for every head seal or other closed systems. You won’t encounter a rusty bolt that won’t come off (so you have to mess with it, heat it, apply WD-40, and wait again). The game is more like assembling a bicycle or a lawnmower. There are few assemblies, and everything is very simple. I disassembled and reassembled the main assemblies in 5 minutes. That’s madness.
This is not a simulator. Don’t think that the parts in the game will help you identify a part in real life! That’s not true. Most parts are just made universal (I guess to avoid putting effort into creating a wider range of models). The placement also raises questions at times, except for the engine—it stays in place (just joking).
The graphics are also questionable. New cars come in rusty. The word "dirt" seems to be a forbidden word for the developers because there’s simply none. All cars are perfectly clean. There are very few effects, and all the colors are oversaturated. The controls are very difficult to configure and only through the MAIN MENU, which raises a lot of questions. And most importantly, a very strange control model has been chosen, with magnetization to each part (which essentially kills the word "simulator"). In real life, you stand under the car (or worse, lie under it) and try to feel for what you need. Elbow-deep in grime and exhausted.
However, this is a game. The development team is not large, and I think that’s a big problem for them. You can feel the desire to simply make money on similar projects rather than investing in them. I’d be happy if something more thoughtful and interesting comes out in the future.
For now, I don’t recommend it.

I enjoy this game so much. Spending my time to find the not discovered part (1 hour). I recommend this game to you, if you have free time.

With the DLC, it can be an interesting and fun trek though the story mode thanks to the surprisingly good amount of details in the engines and suspension. Without the DLC, it get repetitive very quickly.

One of the easier car building games. (when compared to things like my summer car) Has its issues here and there but still a fun experience 6/7 years later. Good knowledge comes from this game too. Put someone who is not mechanically inclined in this game and 20 hours later they are searching for a job at a junkyard.
This game brings hours of fun. It is also educational and teaches you about mechanics

Was surprisingly fun and relaxing, even if you don't know much about cars. The game strikes a nice balance between realism and accessibility. It's definitely simplified to keep things fun so you're not drowning in overly complicated mechanics. It's realistic enough to teach you the basics, but not so much that you need to be a real-life mechanic to enjoy it.
10/10, would lose sleep again to rebuild an engine that purrs like a kitten.

А еще, эта игра — отличный способ отдохнуть от повседневной рутины. Вам не нужно беспокоиться о пробках, криках клиентов или о том, где взять запасные части. Вам просто нужно найти нужную деталь и привести в порядок автомобиль. Это, конечно, проще, чем понять, как работает Wi-Fi!
В общем, Car Mechanic Simulator 2018 — это идеальная игра для всех, кто хочет быть механиком, но не хочет замараться в реальной жизни. Рекомендую всем, кто хочет прокачать свои навыки (или хотя бы научиться отличать масло от бензина). Не забудьте взять с собой хорошее настроение и запасной ключ на всякий случай!

For someone who actually works in the automotive technician field I kind of felt weird buying Mechanic Simulator 2018. I guess it would be like a farmer buying Farming Simulator and expecting to experience real farming. I knew there was no way for them to bring a completely accurate representation of being a true mechanic but I thought I would take a chance and see how far their “simulation” gets anyway.
Starting out with the graphics, I actually was pretty surprised how much they included in the environment. Each shop is pretty detailed with its own tools and “stations” for you to get things done. While there are some obvious short-cuts, like having vehicles magically move from one position to another, they don’t really detract from the overall experience.
Vehicles are fairly detailed but have also been simplified to prevent the game from being overly mundane. A good example of this is the fact that, on one car I was working on, you could remove an engine head with the extraction of 6 bolts and 4 injectors, and then simply slide out the camshafts. If it was that easy in real life I’d make a fortune on head rebuilds, haha!
There were a couple things about the game that somewhat broke immersion and I wished there was a little more thought put into it. The first thing was the simplistic part listings. It’s nowhere near that easy in real life. Most times you have to do some referencing to get a part number before you even think about going to a “store” to buy it.
Secondly, the diagnosing of vehicles was almost non-existent in this game. When a vehicle came into the shop there wasn’t a customer complaint, there was an actual outline of what was wrong with the vehicle. Vehicle has bad brakes. Vehicle has bad timing components. This is totally unrealistic, as most times the customer has absolutely no clue what’s wrong with their vehicle. A good part of a mechanics job is taking a vague complaint, like maybe a weird vibration when the brakes are applied, and then determining from that what the actual problem is. Maybe it’s bad brake pads. Maybe the rotor is out of round. Maybe the caliper sliders are seized. You never know until you get in there and do the work. The customer might not even point you in the right direction. I can’t even count how many times the customer said something was wrong with their vehicle and I find the actual problem isn’t even close to what they thought it was. Vehicle was running rough and customer told me they just had the o2 sensor replaced. I found the problem was a disconnected vacuum hose on the top of the engine, had nothing to do with the o2 sensor.
The most important thing I found missing from this game was the realism in dismantling vehicles. I’m not talking about how you only need to remove 6 bolts to take off an engine header. I’m talking about how every bolt just slips nicely out of its hole like it was just installed yesterday with 2 pounds of anti-seize. There was so much that could have been done in this area. Seized bolts that required heating or drilling. Broken bolts that required an extraction mini-game maybe? You know, SOMETHING to show that taking apart vehicles isn’t all sugar and spice. How about torquing components back onto the vehicle while you’re at it? That’s a HUGE part of a mechanics job and there wasn’t a torque bar to be seen anywhere in this game. This is where this game takes a huge hit in my opinion. The designers just didn’t get it. It’s not simply about taking parts off and tossing them back on again…
So what’s it about? It’s about the challenge. The challenge of getting a vehicle you know nothing about, sluthing out what’s wrong with it. The challenge of running into a seized component and still getting the bugger apart. The challenge of taking something that was falling apart and through struggle and strife making it like-new again. Taking pride in your accomplishment. Knowing the battle was hard fought, but in the end you were victorious! THAT’s what being a mechanic is all about.
At any rate… What it comes down to is the question, is this an accurate depiction of what it’s like to be a mechanic? Well… No, it’s not. That said, I can’t fault the developers too harshly for that. People aren’t buying this so they can see what the mechanic life is like before they decide to become one. They aren’t buying it to train themselves in rebuilding cars. People are buying this for entertainment. This is a game based on being a mechanic, and for that it does very well indeed.
So what’s the verdict? Well, at present the game currently retails on Steam for about $22 and at that price it’s a good buy. Where I find a problem is when you start to add in and calculate the available DLC for the game. Most of the DLC for this game averages between $5.50 and $6.50, and for that price you unlock very specific content. For example, the Dodge DLC only gives you the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger with OEM parts and no “muscle car” options, making the DLC seem like it should have been included with the base game. In fact, a lot of the DLC feels this way. Personally I would have liked to seen all the DLC included in the base game and perhaps the retail price then set around $40. Having the DLC options with this game is more of a black mark on the game than an actual advantage. Perhaps Red Dot will consider that with their next title.
Anyway, the verdict… Well, this game is certainly a niche title, but don’t let that stop you. There is a lot of enjoyment to be had here even with the base game and no DLC. At a cost of $22 it’s pretty fair and I’d say go for it. My only warning is to stay away from the DLC unless you absolutely know what you’re getting into.

"Is this a good game to learn about cars?"
In all honesty, yes it would be. That said, it’s not going to teach you what you need to know to work on your own cars. It will show you the basic parts of a vehicle, where they’re located, and how they go together. The level of detail is fairly good but there’s a lot of unrealistic short cuts and some need to know knowledge (ex. Proper torque procedures) that aren't covered. This game is good if you’re looking to just learn the basics of a vehicle and how they’re put together.
I love building these cars I find it very Relaxing and its also a very good way to learn how an engine works.
The more I play this game, the more I learn about cars. I will open a shop for myself soon.

this game is so poorly made. you can't change mouse sensitivity from in game. you can only do it from main menu and the mouse cursor and camera sensitivity are controlled by the same dial and they aren't compatible. like you either have a really slow main menu mouse cursor or a really fast camera sensitivity AND you can't change it at all from in game. It's made by idiots
Only reason I do not recommend this game is because they have made a newer one, and that one is a lot better. This is good for budget-friendly options tho.
Game was interesting to play until I got a job as a small time mechanic at my local shop. Now whenever I play it, it just feels like clocking in at work.

played this on PS4 and now PC really great fun and sometimes challenging tasks, you have to grind hard to get to level 30 to unlock paint booth , welder and interior detailer. overall great game if you up for a grind and after those achievements
It's incredibly frustrating to have to fix one part... except removing other parts to get to that part sends those parts below the minimum part level needed to finish the job... so now you have to replace a ton of parts because simply putting the part back that wasn't needed to be changed causes flags because the part you put back, that was never meant to be changed, is below the required level of repair for all parts. Simply taking a yellow part off a car that needs all green means now you MUST replace that yellow part even if it was never on the list needed at the start... you get mission where you have to replace bearings and you might as well buy all the bearings the car needs because you're going to have to replace them all anyway simply trying to find the one that needed fixed. It's an immersive game then you hit a point of frustration where no matter what you do, the car just keeps getting worse because parts you take off, that were never meant to be repaired, but needed moving to get to parts that do need repaired, well now they need to be replaced too simply because you took the part off the car. I spent a lot of time in this, got to level 15 or so... ran into a job that no matter how I took it apart, it was making me replace everything that was never meant to be replaced, costing me all my money and an entire day of frustration.
