Game unifinished. It's an ok platforming shooter.
Dead game. They even had the gall to sell a soundtrack that they never released. Do not buy.
I'm bouncing between actually having fun and being incredibly frustrated.
The enemy spawns are specifically designed to box you in to the point of literally spawning enemies directly behind you basically out of nowhere. The game demands a more methodical approach because just moving moving forward will often result in you being boxed in which can be quite annoying.
When things are going well however it is incredibly fun and chaotic. The movement feels fine, though its platforming doesn't feel great. On occasion it feels a little unfair when an enemy spawns right behind you in the midst of an ambush, after a jump, (Which because of the enemies aggro range often results in them bee-lining it towards you) with little time to react forcing you to start from scratch essentially.
I do enjoy it a lot however, so thumbs up.
Wonderful game with a really interesting gameplay loop :D
Its an ok game. but its also not been updated in nearly a year. wait until a full release.
Botlike is a hidden gem of rougelike games. Even though it is still under developement it is a great game with nice visuals and good combat. I like the items system, when you have certain items they combine to a greater item. The upgradable weaponry is just beautiful.
Town / before the actual game
Town
The town offers a few occasions to prepare youself for battle.
* There's a slot machine at which you can invest permanent currency for a chance to win a non-permanent upgrade/weapon for your next run.
* Also you can find a shop just like any other shop you can stumble upon in the core game, having 4 random items for you to purchase for you next run, that is if you can afford it, since you usually start off with exactly 0 credits before you invested in some...
Permanent Upgrades
It's a bit grindy but that's usually the point of rogue-like games, isn't it? I feel like the prices of permanent upgrades are quite reasonable. The amount of different permanent upgrades is totally fine and you can pretty much customize just however you'd like to play the game. You can go for maximum tankiness, tons of damage or ninja play style dashing through everything that's thrown at you like it was nothing. You can even reduce shop prizes or the amount of bling you lose when you die.
Killing those bots / actual gameplay loop
Non-permanent Upgrades
Non-permanent upgrades which you collect during your runs and lose upon death are plentiful and varying. I especially like the idea of combining 2 or more of those upgrades to get an even better one. Those synergies can be incredibly devestating. It could do with some counter-productive combinations though. I.e. not everything you can pick up makes you stronger in general. Instead some combinations should actually weaken you so that you'd have to put some thought in what to pick up and what not to. This way there could be actual different builds per run, not just a few more or a few less upgrades. But that would require even more different upgrades as well. I expect those to happen sooner or later.
Weapons
Similarly to non-permanent upgrades you can find/buy weapons on your way. Weapon types were just raised to 10 in the last update, doubling the amount to choose from. Every weapon has up to 5 levels, which you can increase by just finding the same weapon multiple times during a single run. And they all have their own, different uses. Except for the blowtorch. Really, I don't get what I'm supposed to do with that thing. The shotgun at Level 2 or higher is an awesome flak cannon for instance. It gets rid of those pesky flyers in no time.
Movement
Movement feels a little bit clunky at times, especially the wall jumping, but then again it totally fits the overall theme. Being an old warbot with a tophat might actually feel exactly like that. ^^ It's nothing to really worry about.
"Levels"
There is a decent amount of content at the moment. 2 differently themed large areas put together randomly from tilesets each with a boss at the end. I'm gonna call them "levels" although there is a fluent transition from on to the other after the first boss. Enemy types vary between those levels as well as general mechanics. The difficulty really spikes after the first boss (which is not exactly easy either... at least not without a few permanent upgrades). The art style and ambience is great.
Death Screens
Yeah, I just have to mention those seperately. The death screens are hilarious. You'll enjoy those even more if you're an "IT person" yourself. ^^
Conclusion, already?
Yes, I never intended to write so much. It's 4 in the morning. Hell, it's about time.
My overall experience with this game was way better than I ever anticipated. For an early access indie game it's great and more than worth your 10 bucks. Especially if you value playtime per buck. I even gifted it to a few friends just to have a reason to throw some more money at Binji. You should do so too. Honestly, I really doubt you'll regret it. I'm not a great fan of the rogue-like genre but this game just gets it right in my opinion.

This is an Early Access Report. It therefore only comments on the game's state during the time the report was made and whether or not it is enjoyable/who it will appeal to. This EAR will be revised upon the game's full release.

Game really feels like it has some potential. Got frustrated with it at first, so I put it away for a little while and recently picked it up back up again, hoping there would be some signifigant updates. Controls are still a little clunky and character feels sluggish. Upgrades are ridiculously expensive, so unless you love grinding the first level over and over again for a few pieces of currency, I wouldn't recommend it. Doesn't even feel like a "git gud" game... at least those are enjoyable. Sorry, but I can't recommend it.
Botlike is a 2D shooter roguelite that tries some interesting things, but seems to fall flat in a lot of ways. The character movement is clunky in a way that doesn't feel challenging, but feels frustrating. The humor in the game is a little in your face, but it doesn't feel earned. The upgrades cost lavish amounts for the amount you earn from killing opponents. It feels to me like a slightly more polished Flash game.
In its current state, I can't recommend Botlike for people interested in various roguelites.
To all:
1.It's a gooooooood game worth spending time.
2.If you love the pixel style, you should choose this game.
3.A lot of hidden elements waiting for you to find.
4.Moderate operation difficulty, easy to get started.
To Developer:
1.HUD in ver 0.1 much esay to see all the info, hope can selected two different HUD in the option.
2.To the completely upgrade, the game interest can not continue. It hope has Challenge mode.
3.We want more!!! Full version!!! PLEASSSSE....
This game is a whole lot of fun. It takes your roguelite elements and pairs them up with a challenging side scrolling shooter game. The unlocks are cool and there are tons to collect. The game is extremely challenging right at the very beginning, so I am looking forward to seeing how hard it gets.
The graphics are cool and the characters are likable. If you like similar game you will love this one. Highly recommend.
The early access version of this game is much more playable using keyboard and mouse than using a gamepad, at least for me. With all that said, it looks like all the right stuff is there in the game. The controls are easy to get used to and there is a definite beauty found in the thought 'less is more'.
The music is amazing and transitions from area to area. The control is tight. Death is a part of this game, but the balance between what you can randomly acquire on your misadventures versus what you can build up between deaths is very nice. Because there is a balance between the two, I hesitate to call this a 'roguelike', where accomplishment is >90% the skill and randomness of a run. With all that said, sitting down and blowing stuff up is fun! Looking forward to more content and challenges ahead.
Some improvements I'd like to see (skipping content requests and keeping everything vague to try to avoid spoilers):
- More granular randomness: the current level seems to be generated in sections. Think of rooms and once you see the same room fifteen times you have figured out all its secrets. However, you can to a great degree predict which enemies will be where and the game becomes a grind rather than engaging.
- More AI depth... combined arms. So, when enemies are grouped it's really easy to blow them all up as a group. They spawned as a group, they die as a group. That's awesome. In keeping with simple AI, allow units in groups to work together. Maybe a big enemy throws a small enemy at or behind you. Maybe a fast moving enemy picks up one or two small enemies and brings them with as a sort of earth-shattering kaboom. Perhaps the likelihood of bots to work together increases with the amount of resources you spend between deaths or uses some other measure. Whatever these combinations are, still keep it simple so that the learning curve doesn't become a cliff.
Bottom line: for an early access game, what is delivered is rather well polished and full-featured. Everything in this review is subject to a LOT of change as the game is still in early access.
it's hard but I love it!
10/10 i cant say anything else
Excellent little game, and although a tad on the simplistic side right now, the foundation is rock solid. The movement, shooting, upgrades, skills, etc. all feel spot on. My only real issue is that some times the game falls a little on the dark side making it hard to spot enemies and pits, but this is really more of a nitpick than anything else. Bravo to Binji (the dev) on making something that has almost limitless potential for improvement and refinement. I did a brief overview with gameplay and commentary if you find yourself interested but unsure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kunXw1NoqJU&feature=youtu.be
Botlike already feels like a good roguelike with the potential to bring you hours of fun. The Gameplay is solid and rewards you with a constant feeling of progression, similar to games like Rogue Legacy.
Of course, as an Early Access Game, Botlike still has some bugs or balancing problems.
But with a little bit of polishing, this Game could become a new Indie-Hit.
If you like Roguelikes, you should at least give it a try.
Botlike is a solid Roguelike Game, which goes in the right Dirction.
Sure, its got still a lot to improve but its only Early Access, so everything can change quit a lot.
Lets see how the Game changes with the next Updates and reached Milestone.
I only can recommend give this Game a chance and see for yourself, if you like it.
To be an early access game I have to say that it is really well done.
It has an excellent progression system and the learning curve is right.
There are small bugs but nothing that compromises the gaming experience.
I recommend it to roguelite/bulletshell lovers.
