Operation Warcade VR

I like the concept - arcade machine, side-scrolling fun, infinite ammo, just you and lots of enemies. The best part are the immersion sections where you can hop into specific set pieces of the map to throw knives, snipe distant enemies (sniping always being troublesome in VR), dual-wild bazookas, or drive various vehicles (which is honestly more trouble than its worth most of the time). It's a cool and fun concept that helps shake up each level, and they're completely optional (minus the challenges that require them) so you don't have to do them if you're sick of a sequence or just want to get on with things. I like that thrown weapons like grenades at the enemy or knives at you grow and shrink in size as they cross the screen threshold, neatly transitioning between the two aspects of the game. I also like that you can see your own "face" on the arcade screen in immersion sections. It's good for a giggle.

All that to say, I do not like this game once I got past the first ten or so levels. It just doesn't work out when you have tons of tiny enemies shooting at you from every direction and you're dead before you can parse all their locations. There's a reason on-the-rails shooters in proper arcades only have you dealing with the enemies you can see all at once on the same screen without needing to peer around to try finding them behind walls, cover, vehicles, and more, as well as making them nice and obvious. Grenades work to pick up the slack on dealing with hidden enemies until you run out. The game has a few cruel tricks - like those bomber jets that you need to know they're coming in advance to shoot them down in time or they just kill you, or the Hostages which are incredibly easy to kill by accident.

In the end, after getting killed several times on the same maps retrying over and over and feeling that some challenges were just way too much effort to make progress, I uninstalled. This thing needs tweaks before I'd be willing to give it another serious shot. If you're curious, buy it on sale for $5 or less and you'll get your money's worth.

An on-the-rails shooter is simply not fun in VR

i was kinda skeptical before purchase, but i picked it up on sale. Totally worth it. The videos dont do the game justice. Playing on quest 3, with 3090ti. Plays perfect. no issues, and its fun!

I enjoyed this game. It had an arcade feel. Its a rail shooter type game with some areas that you can unlock by shooting an icon and go into a mini game in that area for the level. Seemed like you needed to complete challenges to earn points and move on to new levels, which i'm not a huge fan of. Regardless, this game was fun. Try the demo and see if its for you.

A lot of fun and takes me back to the good old days of going to an arcade to play these.

The arcade room itself could use some love and some of the flight/driving controls can be a bit wonky but otherwise a good VR game.

I would not recommend paying full price for it. Wait til it's on sale. It's a good game, but not $19.99 good.

And thank you Devs for having a free demo! I wouldn't of bought this without being able to play it first.

So far only played a bit but it is a real fun on rails shooter.
Plays like a side scrolling arcade shooter with a twist.
The bonus sections are very odd and sometimes very difficult to play but they are more like optional side quests.
Overall fun game for a low(ish) price.

Got this game for $8 on a sale. Can firmly say it was worth the price. You can choose between playing it like it is a arcade cabinet. Or be warped into the cabinet. In the arcade cabinet mode there is a box that if you shoot it will warp you into the game.. I don't think anything compares to feeling like you are in a action movie blasting people with dual uzis...I felt like this was GTA when I would be driving the car and blasting people at the same time.

Such an excellent concept. Take an old arcade favorite like operation wolf or it's many other games just like it from the old arcade days and adapt it to VR. Once again just like Midway they did not deliver. Not even close. This game is terrible. Broken achievements. Broken game play. Terrible design choices. The hostages are like a terrible joke on players. The same few concepts repeated over and over in 6 levels to reach an artificial game length. I hope another developer does something like this, but actually puts skill and effort into it.

Wow. I don't have a lot of time played yet, and I didn't play this much in the arcades, but it's amazing. You play the game like you're standing in front of the arcade while being transported into the game at various stages. When you're in the game is where Operation Warcade really shines. Flying the plane was awesome and I can't wait to see what else they have in store for me! I would put the fun and playability from a retro standpoint up there with Half-Life: Alyx. It's that much fun. The demo only offers one level. Had I known it would be this cool, I would have skipped the demo and bought it.

It's a great mindless arcade game, don't get me wrong it's a lot of great fun, it's just kind of mindless,like an arcade game should be I really enjoy it!

This was one of my favorite games on oldschool platforms, and I already had this game on Viveport (where i already played for a couple of hours), i rebough it because it was included with the "Nostalgia Bundle".

Its a GREAT game, based on the original, but in 3D with "immersive zones" where you go down to the ground and fight in 1st person.

These are kinda like minigames, where you drive a truck with one hand while shooting with the other, or ride in a chopper, or fly a jet, or shoot arrow, or shoot a sniper, or take a high position and take out enemies below... and a few others like that.

Its pretty cool that even if there are at least a couple of these on every level, the devs managed to make them slightly different so they are not really a repeat over and over.

Each level has 3 special requirements specific of that level (kill 3 enemies with a granade, kill 5 enemies using crossbow, etc...) finishing the level AND doing the tasks gives gold stars, the amount of goldstars you unlock, also unlock upgrades for your weapons, and unlock new levels.

Performance was great with a gtx1080, audio, controls, all around worked as expected.

Imo this game for the price of the bundle is a very easy game to recommend. Im thoroughly enjoying this.

OMG way more fun than i was expecting. Bought this game to satisfy my light gun itch and its done that and more. Feels more like your'e in a live action shooting gallery. Simple and well done with power up pov changes to add to the fun.
bought it for $5, would've been satisfied paying $20.

VR today is fun, but it seems as if the development teams are pretty much focused on certain genres of gaming. You have the first person shooter types - Half-Life, Boneworks, Pavlov, etc. Then you have your 'experiences' which aren't really games but rather immersive movies where you might have to point at some things or solve puzzles. Then of course you have your beat based games such as Beat Saber and Audica, Synthriders, etc.
I love VR, don't get me wrong. But most of the games are pretty much the same style of gameplay. Sure, there are exceptions - Op. Warcade is one of them.
I've never played a game like this in VR - not only does it give props to the old school style shooter arcade cabinets of old, it literally puts you right in the game itself. Not just shooting troops, but flying airplanes, helicopters, manning gunboats, etc.

This game ROCKS because it's so innovative. What's sad is that there hasn't been any activity from the team for quite some time.

Even for the price point it's at now - if you are yearning for something different - just buck up and buy it.
Stay away from the bundle though - the other ones are pretty meh.

If you have a fondness for the janky nature of most early VR software, you'll probably get a kick out of this.

Everyone else should wait for a sale. I got it for seven bucks, and I wouldn't have paid more. The mechanics of the game are really neat, but there's some strange design choices and a general absence of polish.

Operation Initiated... enough said. :) O.k, maybe not quite enough. This awesome homage to the original arcade classics brings back the feeling of walking into your regular arcade, and seeing a machine gun stuck on top of an arcade cabinet. Yeah, WTF! Reloaded.

I'm not often compelled to review anything but I simply have to for Operation WarcadeVR as it's brought me the most fun so far on the Vive.
It's become my new goto game to show to Vive first timers and there can be few better accolades than that alone, but there's so much more to it.

On the surface a simple classic and highly nostalgic shooter based on Op Wolf from the 80s, but the depth it offers with absolutely incredible 'immersion points' just goes vastly better.

The immersion points are little set pieces that break away from the normal side scrolling and break up the flow with excellent little minigame scenes. Along with these are oodles of challenges to complete which often occur wiithin the immersion points.

No other game has made me feel quite so epic. Dodging bullets and batting them away with a titanium uzi or a shield never felt so heroic.

Incredible game, exceptional quality that surpasses most offerings on the Vive and a fantastic demo of the capabilities of the tech. I love it!

Fucking Awesome one of the best VR games I have played so far, the immersion arcade option is just epic. This is what should be coming out for VR, thank you just when I was getting a little jaded with some of the VR titles I have played recently something this fun comes along.

Will be my show people VR game from now on as most can relate to the old arcade games but this new take will blow them away. Talk about making someone feel like Rambo, I can't highly recommend this game enough to anyone who has VR and has been a long time gamer.

This game is by far the best VR experience I've had to date. I'm old enough to remember the original Operation Wolf in the arcades. That machine got a lot of my 50p's I tell you.
So what can I say about this game?

1. Whether you have VR or not, buy it. It plays in 2D/3D on a regular screen as well.
2. I got it in the steam sale for £8.99 but it's easily worth the full asking price.
3. You build up a posse of NPC fans behind you. Virtual pals are better than none I guess.
4. If you feel the rage after losing go for a walkabout and punch/push some of them over. It's very theraputic.
5. In VR mode you can almost stick your head in the screen to look around.
6. Immersion within immersion. There are various immersion points in all the levels that give you a different POV in the game. This is amazingly executed in VR. I luvs the explosive <3 bow & arrows <3
7. It surpasses the original arcade game in many many ways, suffice to say, the game is awesome.

One niggling issue is the game crashes out on rare occasions.
Another bug is the game glitches sometimes in VR, making the view jumpy/shaky, which is a little off-putting to say the least. Thankfully it doesn't happen very often and when it does just restart the game. Not a huge problem as I said but will keep submitting bug reports.

Whether you're into playing classic arcade or want fresh, fun challenges, then this game deserves a bit your time.

Quite simply, this is an excellent remake of an 80s all time classic. It comes with my "RaNDoM(PReCiSioN) Highly Recommended" badge.

It's like a childhood fantasy come true. You feel like you did as a kid playing Operation Wolf.
It's crashed a couple of times, but seeing as it's short levels, it's not a deal breaker. I recommend this highly, I think most people will love it.

EDIT: I now have 3 stars in every level. The crashing seems lots less frequent since todays patch. Can't wait for more content. This really is one of my favourite VR games ever!!! Keep up the great work.
