Sonic Forces is a modern 3D Sonic game that, unfortunately, disappoints, especially since it was released just a few months after the excellent Sonic Mania. Not only that, but it also brings back the gameplay styles of the equally excellent Sonic Generations, only to make them worse.
The best addition to this game is the ability to create your own avatar, with lots of customization options unlocked by playing and completing various missions. However, the gameplay for the avatar isn’t much better.
Modern Sonic offers the best gameplay style, feeling the most fluid and responsive. However, the boost mechanic is dialed back a bit, and everything just feels a bit slower. The avatar gameplay is mostly similar to Modern Sonic’s but without the boost, making it even slower. The avatar does have a customizable weapon based on Wisp powers, but most of the time, it feels like a gimmick. As for Classic Sonic, I don’t know what happened—I feel like I barely have control over him, which makes platforming sections especially annoying.
I don’t think gameplay is the worst offender here, though. It’s actually the level design. In Generations, you could boost a lot, but there were plenty of shortcuts that required quick reactions to access. Here, the levels are mostly linear, with a lot of autoplay sections, so boosting through stages just isn’t as satisfying. The same design applies to the avatar and classic stages, but it doesn’t hinder them as much because those styles are slower. However, each has its own gameplay issues, especially in the classic Sonic sections.
The stages are also quite short, and the same goes for the game overall. That’s likely why they added a lot of useless collectibles that force you to replay levels multiple times to get everything, as one set unlocks the next. Visually, the stages aren’t very interesting either. The soundtrack is also average, with many vocal tracks that feel out of place instead of appealing instrumentals. The story is average as well, though story has never been a strong point of Sonic games. There’s a free Shadow Episode DLC, but it’s only three stages with the same design flaws, and Shadow plays mostly like Modern Sonic.
Despite these criticisms, I actually enjoyed Sonic Forces. It’s far from the best, but it’s better than Sonic 4 and Lost World, for example. And at least it wasn’t released at full price. It’s just an average Sonic game, which makes it more disappointing than outright bad. If you’re a fan and find it on sale, I can recommend it, even if there are better Sonic games available, like Generations and Mania. But if I could, I would give this a neutral rating.
Get it when its on sale. The base game itself isn't really that good, But the game itself is worth it for the Overclocked mod which fixes so many problems of the game.
10/10 very good. Excellent time trial game. I heard people didn't like this one very much -- unfathomable. Just one issue, which is that you need to use the 60FPS max framerate option or you get major frame rate issues. Also vsync needs to be on as well or it tears, even if you can easily maintain frame rate. I played on a 4090. If you have a 60hz display and might upgrade soon, don't miss your chance to play this game
Presentation is excellent. Writing is awful. Overall gameplay is mid.
Overall, the game is mid.
There is always going to be that small percentage of people who say this game is overhated or doesn't deserve the flak it gets. They sure as hell will never explain WHY they think it's good though, they'll probably just bring up the music or something like that.
It is your civil duty to put them in their place every time they speak out of line. Unless you're really young and don't know any better, I don't know how you could possibly extract any joy out of this experience. It's utterly devoid of any creativity or passion. Every single possible thing they could have messed up, they went and did just that.
This game NEEDED the hate it got, or else we would have never gotten something as excellent as Shadow Generations.
This game is Good & its over hated by new gens, but overhaul its fun
F#$@ this game and what it did to the series for years to come. This game had an impact equal to the one Sonic '06 had, killing the budgets for projects going forward and interest in Sonic overall, turning him into a joke all over again. May we never have another game on this level ever again.
very thankful for the modders who are bothering to actually mess with this game even if their work only makes it slightly better cause the game is in just about every way not good
got me fucking tweaking, the characters move like they got rocks for breakfast lunch and dinner
With mods to improve physics and Sonic Forces Re-Imagined it's now even better
As much that I love this games ideas, it was portrayed horribly. They've made a cool villian which can make everything look fucked up, and has a very nice design, but, it was just portrayed horribly. And the stages are so short, I'm so glad that Shadow Generations fixed this after all these years. I just hope nothing get forced (pun attended) ever again in a sonic game, because THIS does have potential, just like 06, but portrayed horribly. But still live laugh love Sonic Team!
Only things I thought were good were:
1. Main villain design was cool.
2. Cutscenes integrated custom avatar flawlessly
Gameplay and story were unfun, clunky, and frustrating.
Not a flawless game, but I think it gets more hate than it deserves. It is short, and the writing downright sucks. But I still like the gameplay (for the most part), the level art is so detailed and beautiful, and the music absolutely ROCKS.
Absolutely DO NOT buy it at full price, but on a big sale I think it's worth checking out. I did grow up playing Sonic games though, so I might be a little more inclined to play it than someone who isn't a Sonic fan. Don't let this be your first Sonic game, though. That wouldn't be fair to yourself.
Every time i quit out of the game for some reason it deletes all my progress i made it to level 20 then left and all my progress was gone
I never really understood the need to bring back Classic Sonic or the Wisps (Again). This game would've been cooler had some narrative elements actually been true (Like saying Sonic was essentially being tortured and then him acting like it). I also would've liked it if there were more playable characters like in the Adventure games.
Don't waste your time playing this game, Silly Character, silly story, silly dialogue, GOOFY AHH CUSTOMIZATION, BUNS ALL TOGETHER... Shadow story quite dope though
This Game just isn't worth your time. the story is teribble, and so is the Level design. they just wanted to drop another game in 2017.
The last Sonic games I played were Sonic Mania and Sonic Adventure 2. This is fine, I'm enjoying it. There's undoubtedly better ones, but it's kind of cute to make an avatar and run through levels with them.
I can't be bothered to finish this game after reaching the final few levels. While the game looks visually pleasant and the soundtrack is really good (as per usual), the level design of this game feels very simplistic and linear to a fault. Not too much player control is required to beat these levels, and oftentimes player control is taken away through automated segments and mid-level cut scenes. The game only felt like it was slightly evolving upon itself, and never managed to reach the highs that other Sonic games effortlessly achieved. A nothing-burger experience, but I do want to check out the modding scene of this game at some point.
So. much. fucking. wasted. potential, The fact they went from Unleashed's high-speed levels, to fucking Corridor simulator, The fact they shoehorned in Classic Sonic, & the story trying so damn hard to be serious. Unless you wanna play Sonic Forces Overclocked, or Reimagined. Then skip out on this game.
Bad story, terrible characterization of the cast, boring level design and I beat the main campaign, bonus missions and Episode Shadow in only 4 and a half hours.
Kinda reminds me of the good old sonic '06. Mid story, bland characters and even worse gameplay
The game's 3 hours long and unless you care about customization or achievements, there's zero reason to go back.
This game is okay on its own, but great with the overclocked mod.
after a long time of not playng this game i just reinstald and played agen only to remember why i stoped playng in the first place the avatar creator is a joke and game play is as well and the item unlock is way to much a pain if you like this game good for you but you should expect better and i hope thay attempt something like this agan but remove the weapon crap and ad race abilites like in the show and games have and clotheing unlock not a pain in the azz and get rid of the body sutes and add pants slot also let me play as my avatar the hole game not just a couple stages helpfull or not thats just my opinion
I love the grafics and detials they put into this game. Defanetly one of my favorite so far.
There is no review, there is no joke, it's just mediocre.
Go watch Transformers One in theaters.
Tl;dr: Frankly, unless you can get this game heavily discounted, I don't recommend this game at all. It's utter garbage, standing out among the worst of the worst due to its poor controls, awful level design, and incredibly short story that doesn't even begin to get interesting.
Where do I even begin?
Story:
- The characterisation of every single cast member is atrocious. Too many ridiculous one liners, and the majority of the side cast are helpless without Sonic, even being shown up by the Rookie, who is literally a regular civilian that enlists at the start of the game.
- The tone is incredibly light-hearted despite having a darker premise. The most egregious example of this is Sonic being tortured for 6 months, yet showing no signs of physical or psychological damage whatsoever, instead being his usual cocky and quippy self.
- The new villain was not written well. The small backstory that led to his antagonism felt like childish nonsense. His level of power feels inconsistent throughout the game, built up as an incredibly strong opponent that loses steam towards the end because who the fuck knows.
- The game can be finished in a couple of hours during a regular playthrough. The story tried something ambitious, yet it's over so fast that it doesn't have time to really do anything. In some cases, it lazily slaps text on the screen to explain what happened over the course of a long period of time, which glosses over important details and sucks the fun out of it.
Gameplay:
- The level design is so poor that most of Sonic's levels do not even require you to move the control stick at points. If you've ever heard someone say that modern Sonic games are boost to win, Forces is the worst offender of that by far.
- The controls feel stiff, which makes it difficult to turn properly and control aerial momentum as any of the characters. I found this particularly annoying in 2D sections.
- Classic Sonic just feels worse to play than he does in any other game he's appeared in, primarily due to the stiff controls I mentioned.
- Certain levels have instances when there are short cinematics. These can be at the start, middle or end of a level. These cinematics do not stop the timer, nor can they be skipped. It makes aiming for good times on the rankings a bit unsatisfying, and also makes replaying certain levels a chore.
- 100% is a grind. One reason is because each level has to be played at least 3 times as new collectibles are added to every level (excluding bosses) after collecting one set of that level's collectibles. Another is because some of the challenges require you to max out the honour with each animal in the avatar creation, which can only be done by playing a bunch of levels with that animal to get points. It's not a difficult grind, but it's not a fun one either.
- SOS Missions are punishing in that if you die even once in a level, you fail the mission. As they appear randomly, this can get frustrating, especially if you die due to the poor controls.
- Episode Shadow is only a few levels long, so it can be finished in about 10 minutes. All of these levels re-use parts of levels in the main story, so they aren't particularly enjoyable to play as they lack a unique identity.
Sound:
- Each character has a different type of style for the music in their levels. Sonic is heavy on synth, Rookie's use vocals, and Classic Sonic's are reminiscent of the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis soundfont. In my opinion, Rookie's levels are the only ones with good music. Sonic's music is forgettable and Classic's are plain bad.
- The voice acting isn't great for most of the cast. There's a lack of emotional variety, and in my opinion, some of the voices don't suit the characters well, which can break immersion. Eggman's great as always, though.
Nitpicks:
- Sonic's fur colour is brighter than the usual, darker shade of blue he's had since Adventure, which makes him look more similar to Classic Sonic.
- Classic Sonic is back again. He didn't need to be and really shouldn't be.
- Episode Shadow should have been longer.
- Shadow isn't playable in every Sonic level due to the cinematic moments I mentioned prior.
- The rankings are full of cheaters and nothing has been done about them, so unless you're competing with friends, there's no point in aiming to do well on the rankings at all.
I will say that Forces does still have good points, such as the OST in Rookie's levels, and a pretty diverse avatar creator. Unfortunately, it's good points are few, and they're completely overshadowed by the colossal amount of bad. I've been aiming for 100% on the game, and any moments I'm not frustrated at a stupid death because I couldn't stop or turn properly, I'm bored by the repetitive grinding and uninspired level design. This is the type of game that you'll likely only play once if you're binging a video game series. It's not a game you turn on to have a good time.
I 100%'d the game out of spite. This should go without saying but this game is trash without a soul and should only be purchased for mods.
i think this was a great game,it had great graphics,I beat it in about 8 hours to beat, but its a really good game.
It's okay, the game is just okay but it's a massive downgrade of Generations, Unleashed and hell, even Colours. All you do is boost to win and everything feels so automated, plus the movement is so slippery that I can't even do simple platforming because I end up falling in a pit every time.
Oh yeah and the stages are super short, once the stage starts getting good, it ends...just like that. Also, this game doesn't know what it wants to be because the story makes no sense at times. There's this one moment where Sonic is presumably dead but actually, he gets tortured as mentioned but nope, none of that happens, he's just alive and happy go all lucky, the writing is just not very good. And why is Classic Sonic there? His stages are the worst part of the game btw, wtf happened to his physics?? It's a downgrade of Gens!
However, there are some good parts of the game like the Avatar Editor which is pretty cool, the soundtrack of course which is decent and I actually like Infinite, he deserves another chance in Sonic X Shadow Generations in my opinion. Overall, this game is not worth it, it's a step down of previous Sonic Boost games. Play Generations, Unleashed or even Colours instead.
Never play this game. Because you don't even get to play it at all. The moment Sonic or the Avatar starts sprinting, the game pulls you into a set path that you have to come to a complete HALT to deviate from.
Invisible walls are abundant, the level design is uninspired and the story is a joke. Bad game, 2/10.
Why two and not ZERO ? Because the outside areas of the Chemical Plant actually look pretty cool.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Sonic Forces. The themes are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of human history most of the ideas will go over a typical player's head. There's also Silver's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these themes, to realise that they're not just present- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Sonic Forces truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the meaning in Knuckles' existential phrase "None of this is good, Vector. That's why it's called war." which itself is a cryptic reference to Tolstoy's Russian epic War and Peace. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Takashi Iizuka's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have an infinity symbol tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
This game is so unbelievably ok and boring. The avatar stages are the only parts of the game I actually liked and they still weren’t very good. I’ve installed improvement mods for this but they only do so much, it’s not with the purchase. I got this on sale and I can’t see myself coming back to this game ever in the future. Its not terrible, it’s just so unbelievably ok and boring.
YES SONIC FORCES OVERCLOCKED MAKES IT WAY BETTER
Infuriating gameplay that's filled with slippery controls, broken elements and death pits; I'm pretty sure 95% of my deaths came from randomly placed death pits. The story is really bad, feeling very rushed and making characters like Tails at their absolute worst. Everything feels like it wasn't play-tested.
I'm very interested in playing the Sonic Forces Overclocked mod and I recommend just playing the mod and not the base game if you buy it. But a mod should not change my view on the base game itself, hence why I'm leaving a negative review.
If you want to play this wait till it is on sale, feels like a weaker entry for the series. the story is kinda mid but par for the course of sonic games from its time. the mechanics are not polished but still playable, Some boss encounters are literal repeats with ever so different moves. The ending felt like it didnt wrap things up. Its an ok game but again id say get it on sale
Este y Frontiers son igual de malos
Half cooked, too short. Like, mind numbingly short. The only redeeming quality is being able to create your own character and have them hold hands with Sonic when goin' too fassssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssst
gotta go fast
not only are the production values on the floor, but the game loves to take control away from you and play itself because it doesn't trust you to play it well enough, even when you're practically on rails most of the time. so, it'll take you four to five hours at most to fully beat it if you pace yourself and spend three quarters of that time choosing clothes for your character.
but really, we're missing shadow the hedgehog and sonic heroes on steam and instead have this? no thanks.
Where to begin with....
Music:Fantastic as always(except Classic Sonic's remixes)
Story:MHA but with world war(bad)
Graphics:Good(really good)
Voice actors:They don't give a shit about what's happening(especially Sonic)
Gameplay:Press X to win(bad)
Difficulty:Press X to win(again)
Game time:4 hours with all dialogues and cutscenes(bad)
Price:Should be 2€
this game is better than a lot of games i have played before but it also is not that good either
gotta fist bump fast
Its def a sonic game its ok
This game hits harder than a bottle of temazepam!!!
10/10
game base fun gadget the wolf classic sonic
Sonic, I think you've lost your mind
We're used to know you as a smart kid. Now you can't stop making stupid jokes, even when talking to your foes
What happened to you Sonic ?
i like game
Sonic forces is not a bad game just a very boring one however i highly recomend downloading the overclocked mod that alone makes the game worth it.
This game is short (less than 3 hours), and the level design is very boring. The story kinda stinks. The avatar creator is a cool idea, but far too limited to really be enjoyable.
Get this game on sale.
