Sonic Forces

I've seen negative reviews that say things like "only get this if you are a die-hard sonic fan", and personally, I disagree. I think most of the criticism comes from die-hard sonic fans who were expecting more rather than newcomers experiencing this with a fresh take.

I really like Sonic as a character and a game series. But, I don't think I can consider myself die-hard as I've only completed Sonic Heroes, Sonic Rush, and most recently, Sonic X Shadow Generations. (I've played the Genesis games a little bit, but never beat any)

This game has very smooth and fun gameplay most of the time, I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt refreshed while playing it. Maybe it helped that right before this I re-played Sonic Heroes and had a bad time with it's clunky physics, bugs, poor design, and overly long levels.(Nostalgia didn't save it for me, sadly.)

The only frustration I experienced is that boosting on turns without guard rails can cause you to go off the edge. The infinite fight and final boss fight were some of the best I've experienced in the series and was a satisfying way to end the game.

I think most of the criticism of this game is due to missed opportunities. Overall it's a solid game, but the missed opportunities can make it look terrible when you see what could have been.

For one, the plot had amazing potential. It started out with an intense scenario where Eggman has won, Sonic might not be alive, and a resistance with little hope is trying to fight back. But the story writers weren't willing to take risks, because you are instantly told Sonic is alive. We all know they wouldn't actually kill of Sonic, but they should have kept the suspense a little longer to keep the tense feeling of the resistance.

A lot could have been done with the Phantom Ruby as well, including virtual versions of any past character or zone. Null space was underused too... imagine if instead of being in Eggman's prison, Sonic was actually trapped in Null Space, and the Resistance had to go through Null Space level(s) to get him back?

Sonic games rarely have good plot or even potential for good plot, so the wasted potential likely resulted in more disappointment than if it had a generic premise like many of the other games.

But I'm not basing my review on the plot. Like many others I play Sonic games expecting a fun fast-paced game, and this game certainly delivers! (If it's got a good story that's just a nice added bonus)

Game's an absolute mess. Frame rate constantly dips even on the most powerful of hardware, the controls are super stiff and unresponsive, and the level design is truly atrocious. The serious lack of time playing as sonic in a game with his name in the title is truly mystifying and the return of classic sonic brings nothing to the table but some of the most frustrating controls I've experienced in a game. Skip this game, the avatar mechanic is cool but not a reason to buy this game. Play Sonic X Shadow Generations instead, you'll have a far better experience.

Beside everything in this game being tired, automated, and just feeling terrible. The game won't save your progress, I beat this game back when I was on console and it sucked then too, but at least it had the decency to save. FUCK THIS GAME.

Absolutely abysmal in so many ways. Terrible level design, gameplay and controls are wonky af! I don't know why there's so much input lag on a solid 60fps. Avoid this like the plague!

Bought this on sale, had fun. Can't recommend full price however. But on sale, making your own oc and running around with some cool visuals like sliding on runways with your grapple really is a blast. Music nice too even if ending is kinda lacking in music at times lol

The whole fighting for freedom thing is a cool idea but the way they executed it was done poorly which I find funny because the sonic boom tv show did an episode like this and it was done way better than this. Also this has been done before so why was this so bad? Maybe Sonic Mania made this look bad but thats just me.

I know that my opinion on this game is going to be pretty unpopular but i think Sonic Forces isn't a bad game, in fact I had fun playing it! While I do understand the dislike, i don't think this game deserves to be hated as much as it is. I managed to get S ranks on almost every stage pretty easy and the story was actually pretty interesting. I don't think classic sonic should have been included but that is probably my only complaint. I had fun and I think others should really just enjoy Sonic Forces for what it is.

Only buy this on sale, disregard the base game, and install Sonic Forces: Overclocked.

I love Sonic but I'll stick to the original games or movies. Every newer game of Sonic on Steam is a complete waste of money, even when buying on sale. You can press the same button at the exact moment of the same situation and get a completely different result.

I have played this game multiple times before on a playstation 4 and i still like to play it even on my PC it think this is a good game to play and i would recommend it to other people that like playing sonic games and the thing i like about it is that it's just fun to customise your very own character and obviously create one and to play as classic sonic and modern sonic also the character but downside it only has 30 stages and some could complete the story maybe in less than two hours if they skip dialog and cut scenes

The game is really fun, Im a 10 year old who REALLY likes this game. It's one of my favorites to the sonic franchise, I've played many sonic games. But none like this! It's very exciting when you beat the bosses, some levels are hard to beat. I recommend that you play normal/easy mode before hard mode.

i finally decided to pick this game up again after years of not playing it. I loved it when it came out, I was a child then. I'm no longer a child anymore.

six - nearly seven years later, I cant begin to tell you how much this game is the definition of mediocre. From the awful story, to the awful game play, there's a lot to rip into.

First off the story is genuinely awful as I said. If you're name isn't sonic or "Rookie", you are stuck to the sidelines with nothing to do. Tails in this game was the worst offender.
The game play is even worse. The levels in this game feel lazy and uninspired. They feel like you are running in a straight line all the way through. Barely any branching paths and the few that exist are so obvious its genuinely funny. The characters you play as are garbage too. Classic Sonic controls like a brick and for some parts YOU WILL LOSE MOMENTUM WHEN IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TO DO SO. Hes genuinely the worst of the three. Modern sonic is not any better. Many of his moves from earlier games are gone including drifting. Making him feel more stripped back and bare bones from those previous games.

Last one is the Rookie. He feels like an even more stripped back version of the sonic in this game. They try some new things like the Wispon and the grapple. The Wispon is implemented....fine, but definitely nothing new. The grapple is mostly either in place of a homing attack or just for set pieces, its also nothing special. The only thing I would say was great about the avatar was the customization.

In fact that's all this game has that's really good. You just have to actually play the game to unlock the options in order to customize the character, and that is not fun.

overall this game was a complete step in the wrong direction for Sega and they did not do this game any favors. If you REALLY want to pick this game up for whatever reason, wait for it to go on sale. Otherwise I would not recommend this game.

Don't buy Forces unless it's 75% off (lowest price) and if you plan on installing mods (which will cost about 25 gigabytes of your local storage). Also, if you want Forces, consider Sonic Colors: Ultimate as an alternative. Even though that game has it's issues, I've found it to be more re-playable than this.
In other words, Forces isn't worth much when you have better options for Sonic games or similar. There's like 4 other titles that have way more meat to them.

I completed the game 100% and gotten all the achievements, so I can confidently say I gave it a fair shot. My final verdict? The game is mediocre, I’d rate it a 5/10. I would only recommend it to die-hard Sonic fans.

In my opinion, bringing back Classic Sonic was a mistake. Instead, they should have focused on Shadow, with his stages set before Eggman took over, the Avatar with mission-focused stages, and Sonic, whose stages could serve as a hard mode of Shadow’s stages, taking place after Eggman had already taken control.

Its like they changed tails back to his pre-adventure 1 personality, albeit not being the worst tails characterisation in the series

This game killed my interest for Sonic for years until the movie came out don't play this.

I need to apologize to sonic colors, that game is a masterpiece compared to this.

Despite what the ultrafans and video games nerds think, this is a perfectly fun and enjoyable Sonic game. It has its slight ups and downs, but it looks gorgeous and the story is quite cool, and I love its vibes, and the music is heavenly. And the fact alone that they finally let a sonic fan have their own character in a Sonic story and play around is like, godlike, even though it doesn't go its full potential, which makes sense since this is a first. The only real complaint I can think of is plot-wise, which is that its got too much Sonic in it ironically, given this is supposed to focus on the "forces", the resistance that rose in absence of Sonic to defend the planet when he got taken down, otherwise Eggman wouldn't be able to take over in the first place with Sonic defending it. Less Sonic content wouldve meant more time to focus on our avatar, but ah well.
However, I wouldn't say it's worth the full price if I go by value, and I recommend getting it on sale. But yeah to a Sonic fan it is totally worth it and I highly recommend it.

I liked that the game was very easy to complete getting all the S ranks in the shortest amount of time possible. I also liked the fact that you could actually play as 4 different characters (Sonic, Classic Sonic, the Avatar, and Shadow) for the first time in a long time, and that you could customize your Avatar for the first time ever. Those are the only things that I liked about this Sonic game though. Every thing else ranging from the story to the overall level design is terrible and lackluster. Just when I thought that Episode Shadow was going to be fun to try out after beating the game, it turned into the shortest Sonic game I have ever played. That is right, it is ever shorter than the original Sonic the Hedgehog. If you can look past that and only focus on being able to play as all these characters as well as playing the game casually, then by all means try it. But in my personal opinion, this game is worst than Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 which was revered to as the worst Sonic game for a long time, and I would not recommend Sonic Forces to anyone unless it is on such a huge sale. Short and kinda cruddy and ruined Classic Sonic's reputation for a bit, but I still like it enough to give it a good review. Just buy it, like, 70% off. I bought this at full price like a LITTLE FOOL. Mod support is pretty decent.

This game is not worth the money it should have been free after Dreamcast Sonic started going down hill the levels are extremely to short and what’s up with the customization with your character they could have left that crap out the controls are not very responsive it feels like a delay the game is very fast pace which would be a good think if the control where not so laggy the sound track is okay I will keep playing until finish but really wish I could get a refund

This game is actually pretty good. I feel like people are hating the game, just for the point of hating. Like sure, Tails fearing for his life after building up his courage from Sonic Adventure 1 onward brings it down. But the gameplay is good, Infinite is a great villain and you can create your own character.

the game itself is mediocre, and i played it on a PS4 years ago already, but bought it on sale for PC to play mods. honestly if you can get Overclocked, it is worth trying to get this game on sale.

It was on sale and I'd already sold off my PS4 copy so I repurchased the game here mainly for completionist sake. I did not love this game on release and if I were to say I have a least favorite Sonic game I've always said this one. I wanted to give it another shot just to see if I missed anything, and... I mean kinda? I can find more of the good stuff now in hindsight and when the series is in a better place, but the problem with Sonic Forces was never that it was a horrible game, but that it was a very mediocre one. Painfully mediocre.

Returning to the boost formula after doing something completely different for Sonic Lost World, Forces completely abandons any promise that Sonic Generations had shown for future titles. The wide branching paths of Gens' level design has been replaced by long corridors and narrow pathways with any deviation lasting for mere seconds at a time while deemphasizing or outright removing mechanics like sliding and drifting. Along with incredibly simplified level design, everyone just feels worse to play now. Modern Sonic's double jump, carried over from Lost World, is so incredibly heavy and unreliable and it makes any 2D platforming section very uncomfortable to get through. I would say the level design is mostly what holds him back though, he doesn't suffer quite like Classic Sonic does. Classic Sonic is no one's favorite part of Generations. He doesn't have the same physics and momentum based gameplay that defines the Genesis titles, but he made up for it with a really over powered and super fun to use spin dash which could just hurl you across the stage and create opportunities for big ol' jumps. Here, the spin dash has been nerfed into the ground and straight to the earth's core. Now he has nothing, in addition to the worst music in the game. Releasing this the same year as Sonic Mania just made all those flaws soooo much worse. The new guy, your avatar is also not very impressive. It's just a slower Modern Sonic with a weapon and grappling hook. Grappling hooks are awesome of course, but it's just a glorified homing attack.

I can appreciate things like the music and visuals more than I did in 2017, like the final boss has a pretty sick guitar riff goin by the end, but Sonic Forces is not a game I can recommend to anyone besides Sonic Completionists. I mainly have it now to maybe try out some mods. I mean you can beat this whole game quickly enough to still get your Steam refund in time without even trying to a speedrun or whatever. Sonic games being short is nothing new of course, some of the best ones you can beat fairly quickly, but in those cases you should reasonbly expect a higher quality experience with minimal filler. Sonic Forces just feels like 2-3 hours of bad filler, where every stage stops before it ever has an opportunity to start. Classic Sonic shouldn't even be here! There are still a few Sonic titles I haven't gotten to in my backlog so this might not remain as my least favorite, but it's one of the most shallow entries the series has ever seen.

Already a mediocre Sonic game to boot. Music is of course great. Story is lacking. Dialogue is cringe worthy. Infinite is a dope design, but written poorly and severely underutilized. Game is only around 2-3 hours long. And the biggest kicker, is YOU CAN'T EVEN LOAD A SAVE FILE ON THE PC VERSION. What in the world? This is awful. Not much else to say. If you ever decide to buy this while its on sale, DO NOT buy the pc version if you ever want to take a break or go back later and play again. Because your save file will just not be there.

Edit: The game seems to save/load just fine on Deck, so it seems to be a desktop exclusive issue.

It's exactly what I was wanting out of Sonic Forces. I didn't want to become brain dead from not finishing a gigantic open world with map pieces you'll never find in less than days, already did that. I didn't want to destroy my controller because of Vector's tennis challenge, and I wanted more than the retro but wonderful Sonic Mania PC. I wanted something arcade-y like SegaSonic The Arcade Game with more color. Forces is just perfect. Not tear your hair out difficult, but like an amusement park ride with 5th generation sprite scaling. The first space scene is a stunner and just gorgeous. My pockets would have exploded and all the quarters would have fallen out like Sonic losing his rings if I was seeing and playing this in the arcade in 1989. The outfits gimmick doesn't add much, but it doesn't hurt either. Not sure why the detractors are looking for Mania or Frontiers or Generations or Phantasy Star in Sonic Forces. a title for luscious refreshing play. I guess all the old school walk-in coin-op arcade hall people are already dead, and so anyone alive doesn't understand the concept of a game that gets you stoked for a normal amount of time but doesn't last several weeks or months. I did enjoy the amazing Frontiers, but that's not what I am looking for in Forces. Imagine camping out at a coin-op arcade for days, living there, eating around there, not bathing, etc. Not looking for that in Forces. I just want to see my hot rod go, flame paint finish and fire out the exhaust.. Highly recommend it for the old school park walk, enjoy the Sega graphics type experience some people seek after.

This game is a hot mess of mixed and missed opportunity and potential, some stages and fights are great, while others are about as short and fast as the time it took my father to leave after my birth. While I enjoyed several parts of the game itself it has been the mods that made it for me, standalone it wouldn't even save my progress. I had to troubleshoot for hours and download a mod just to save my progress which is incredibly frustrating as it is laughable. The reuse of assets is also greatly disappointing and I know it could have been better. The story is fine but very "candied," sugarcoated, etc. Its a fine experience for a Sonic fan but it isn't breath taking, its a opportunity we missed and I only hope Sega learns from it.

Man, there's a lot to say. Despite fans trying to gas up 06 and saying that it can be redeemed, this is somehow hailed as the worst Sonic game by some. While it's not *that* bad, it's also far from good.

Controls : Momentum makes no sense. 0-100, you just start zooming, you WILL die because acceleration is insane. Classic Sonic controls so bad

Level design : Insanely bland. There's a pulse here and there but you will forget about most of it. Visually pretty though, and some good ideas on that front.

The Avatar stuff : the Avatar is fine, but you are drowned in endless missions, endless pop ups for parts, ranking up??? A lot of weird decisions that just feel outlandish in a Sonic game

Overall, you'd be better served going for literally any other Sonic game. Just a puzzle of a game that I cannot and do not want to solve.

People give this game too much hate. Sure its not the greatest, but I would say it is still worth your time if you are into sonic. I got this game on sale for 10 dollars, and for that price I think I got my moneys worth.
The game is very short, 30 stages for the main story and 3 for the Episode Shadow expansion. The level design for the 2D portions look like they could be made in a level editor, so it isn't as good as the other games. The Episode Shadow levels are all the same. I think they are supposed to be different in some way, but I couldn't notice anything.
The avatar creator is very interesting. Nothing I would ever want to see in a future Sonic game, but it is a unique inclusion. I think the outfits and the options for what animal you can be and stuff are unique and diverse, the customization is good for a kids game like this. As a little kid I could definitely see myself making thousands of avatars.
The cutscenes are well animated. They didn't look so smooth to me on my computer, I am not really sure why. The voice acting and lines are kind of corny, but that's not really out of my expectations for a sonic game. Along with that, the soundtrack is actually pretty good, which is unfortunate. I wish this soundtrack could've accompanied a better game, but eh that's okay.
Overall, should you buy this game? It depends. I would really recommend buying it on sale rather than full price. It was fun to me, but its not the first option I would go for. There are cheaper and better sonic games you can get on steam that are leagues above this one. But if you are really curious, getting this game on sale isn't too much of a sacrifice.

Genuinely worse then 06, atleast Sonic 2006 has entertainment value with how bullshit the story is and how glitchy it is. This game commits a worse crime then being a rush job, it's just boring, bland, and safe.
The story is so promising but they do absolutely nothing with it.
They completely kill any enjoyment I had playing as classic sonic from generations.
The avatar is pointless and just a lamer version of Modern Sonic, who is literally a pressing X to win simulator.

buy this game when its on sale. gameplay was okay (ecxept classic sonic i hate you) but i recommend if you still wanna buy it then install some mods to improve the game. overall not a bad game but not good either

Has its ups and downs but I genuinely had fun with this game ! very pretty and liked the music

This is fine and it is playable, but it is just very basic gameplay. Frustrating how this game is the one that have the "Eggman rules the world" concept, but it is what it is. I wish this concept is done more, and we get to use different Sonic characters, but whatever. The most I have for this game is honestly dressing up my OC with different outfits.

Also, buy it when there is a big discount.
