2nd best sonic game, just behind unleashed imo. its still really great and a bit more consistent and easier to get into. no clue why they bothered remastering this but hey have fun with this on next and last gen consoles. lots of great mods for this too.
This game is phenomenal. However there are some bull reviews about easily fixed issues 1. The delisting, so what? buy the game in the bundle or cry me a river, me personally a full remaster with a second game added in is more worth it if you don't own the game already. 2. Starting up the game. Now sorry your controller has constant connections issues, not my problem. 3. "Sonic keeps doing this" now again, sorry your controller has constant connection issues 4. "Game too hard" It's one of the easiest in the series! you are just actually bad.
I've heard this game be acclaimed time and time again as one of the very best Sonic games. I'm not that huge on Sonic as a franchise but I did grow up with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Sonic Heroes on the Gamecube and I have miraculously when I was a kid beat Sonic and the Black Knight on Wii and Sonic Forces on Switch, all have interesting things about them such as great music, short bursts of fun gameplay and solid controls (albeit some games do have issues with the controls in general) and since I was beginning to get into a depression slump I needed something colorful and bright to play that would keep me happy.
I'm pleased to say that yes, this game has made me feel somewhat better over the last few days, but I cannot say for sure that this is the absolute best Modern Sonic game. Look, I haven't been able to play every single mainline Sonic game (I have unfortunately played Shadow the Hedgehog which is now going for 100+ dollars at one of my local retro game stores, mainly because of the new Sonic movie coming out) but as far as I'm concerned Generations was decent. It did it's job and it still holds up to this day. It's a beautiful looking game and one of the best games visually of the 7th Game Gen. Everything is so bright and colorful and vivid so the game just looks downright appealing to begin with. The soundtrack is also awesome. Would I say it's as good as something like Sonic Forces soundtrack? Maybe not. But it's still a VERY high bar for the entire series to begin with, especially since they are going back to old tunes from previous games.
One of the things I've absolutely been pleased about here is the fact that they do not ignore games that have been lambasted over the years. Instead, they acknowledge them while attempting to make gigantic improvements and adjustments to some stages like ones from Unleashed and 2006. I think most developers/publishers are ashamed of the legacy of some of their games they have made in long running series, but Sonic Team proves that you shouldn't be scared to look back on the past. The Classic and Modern Sonic levels are joyous to play. I found the controls satisfying for both of them and when the game rewards you with speed, it can feel like you're king. Granted, Sonic is not all about speed but careful platforming and level design in the 2D Games, but when you find ways to go fast you just feel like the game is giving you something in return. I enjoyed the story which was also decent but cliched. The twist at the end of the game is very obvious if you really think through before getting there, but it's still nonetheless an enjoyable part of the game.
I found some elements to be annoying such as the Challenge Stages and the Boss Fights. Some boss fights take longer than expected due to being unaware of how to proceed with some of them. Sometimes as well they can feel tedious. And the Challenge Stages are very tedious as well. The design choices for these parts are just not very good. When the game runs on complete simplicity and thrills, the Challenge Stages just completely slow the game to a halt with it's need for more complex design that should have been more simplified to begin with making a lot of them just feel like a chore to get through. You only really need to do 9 of them (3 Each time a part of the world unlocks) to progress to the end, but you still need the Chaos Emeralds, which is not so hard to get considering you can get them via Boss Fights via Shadow, Silver and Metal Sonic.
Bottom Line: If you like Platformers or Sonic games then this should be obvious. I'm recommending this, but be warned that this is a very outdated package. There are no video settings attached in game, but are composed directly from a Config Setup Menu that is old and unwelcome in the year 2024. Sonic x Shadow Generations apparently has better settings options and an entirely new chunk to the game with the Shadow Generations package, so while this is still worth playing, it may be best to wait for a sale on the newest release of the game as this has been delisted as part of inclusion in a bundle. I am beginning to see why, mainly because of the archaic settings menu, but it's still worth picking up. I do want to go back to some other Sonic titles and spin offs, so one day I'll eventually get to them.
Classic Rooftop Run Music is the greatest track 10/10

very good game i like a lot, its gone but the remaster looks so sexy i don't think its as big a deal as origins, still, you now miss out on 1.12 sonic generations
8.5/10 game. My only critique is that sonic is way to slippery, and the occasional glitches that just takes you away from the immersion of going fast. overall pretty good, but can be frustrating when a glitch hits you when you are on a run to get a new record.
This game is fun, especially with mods installed.
Incredibly scummy behavior from SEGA to arbitrarily delist this game solely to force people to buy their "new", overpriced 3-hour long Shadow Generations game, which they forcefully bundle up with Sonic Generations.
This game is really good until the end of the game where it becomes just ok, probably better now to just buy the remaster though since you can only get this version in bundles and you get more game with that one. Left me wanting more of the modern gameplay, which is a shame because a lot of modern sonic is a mixed bag so I've heard.
p.s. play green hill act 2 and choose Sonic Boom as the music, greatly enhances an already good level
I think this game is really fun, I really like it, but I have constant lag with it... My PC can handle very large games pretty well, but this is something my pc can't handle? I've tried everything to get it to stop slowing down randomly during levels (the in-game timer doesn't slow down with everything else), but none of it works, not even using mods to disable things :/
I really hope the newer variant of this game doesn't have these issues
This game is the most fun i've gotten out of a sonic game. Can only recommend this to everyone who is a 3D-2D platformer fan. If you mod the game it becomes even more fun. (I recommend the Redux Sonic mod!)
Comparing the original to the new Remaster included in Sonic X Shadow Generations.
Pros: No weird writing that doesnt match animations, no Amy cupcakes, no Rouge nerf, works with tons and tons of mods.
Cons: No Shadow Generations, outdated config launcher that might not work 100% depending on PC, cant buy without bundle due to OG being delisted.
Fantastic game, havent played the new remade one yet but this game is great either way. Great game play, iconic and nostalgic bosses and themes and call backs. Massive W sonic game and you should play this no matter what.
When Sonic X Shadow Generations was announced, I replayed the original version after over a decade since I last played it on console when I was a kid. This time however, I 100% completed it including all challenges, achievements, and S Ranks.
It's just like I remembered the first time I played it, I had a great time with it.
It's truly the best boost-style Sonic game with amazing levels, vibrant visuals and fun side content even with the story and writing being just whatever.
It's a solid great game in general, and it's a shame that future 3D games of the series could not reach the same level since Lost World decided to go with a different experimental style, Forces suffered from short development time and inexperienced level designers, and although Frontiers is pretty good in its own right, I don't think it's quite up there yet.

This is the first ever Sonic game I've ever played on my PlayStation 3 sometime around in 2013. This game introduced me to Sonic and I'm glad it did because this will remain as my favourite Sonic game and I'm so glad that It got a remaster. I will be playing that too because I love this Sonic game a lot, I even still play it to this day.

Whilst a bit short and with a pretty lackluster story, Sonic Generations manages to contain an enormous amount of fun and engaging gameplay regardless. Both Modern and Classis Sonic enjoy some of the best level design they've ever had as they speed through fun remixes of past games from across the franchise. Whilst a remaster is coming out soon, the original is still well worth the price and a must-have for any Sonic fan or just general platformer fan!
I played and beaten this game back on the 360. It's honestly a really good game, It may not appeal to everyone because of the Boost mechanic on Modern Sonic but I remembered Fondly at how fun this game really was. Also Kudos to Sega still allowing this version to exist.
There's also things that will be different in the new game like complete rewriting but keep a similar story from Ian Flynn and also this is the version in which Rouge still has her cleavage and bigger breasts. They were cowards censoring her breasts in the new games smh.
One of the best sonic games out there, cant wait for shadow to have his version of this game

I bought this game when it was on an insane sale back in the day, dirt cheap. The game is definitely good, with amazing levels for both modern and classic, good callbacks and stage selection for the main levels, challenge missions can be decent sometimes, and amazing music. I really only like the classic boss fights, because they die in 5 seconds, and that's how I judge how good a Sonic boss is (I like CD Restored, 3&K, and Shadow Reloaded).
Real shame on them for making this only available through the bundle now. Buy that on sale if you can hold off on it long enough. Use this to avoid Denuvo until it *maybe* gets removed for the new version, somehow. You get mods with this too.
Sega starting to censor shit in Sonic does stink, though. I thought that it would take longer for their absolute fear of a bunch of 9 and 40 year olds to cross over to the games, definitively.
I don't take this franchise seriously; I just like the characters and the world, even though the latter never was that coherent and the former have been gone missing for over a decade at this point. I just play the old games I enjoy, and that is what it is.
I just hope a little black kid from the ghetto gets to enjoy these games like I have enjoyed them. Revisionist history does just make that a tad bit harder. I hope they will stop, which they won't. People will defend the billion-dollar corporation, and they will still make HUGE money from shit like that.
I can still hope.

One of the best Sonic Games on Steam. The movement and speed in the 3D levels is absolutely perfect, it reminds me of the movement in my favorite Sonic game Sonic Unleashed . The 2D Levels are great as well, but i prefer the 3D Levels in this game, but i really like the idea of having 2 different type of mechanics in one game, as it brings in some variaton. One thing that I don't really like is, that you lose a life when restarting a level, as it makes getting the S-Rang kind of annoying.
The best 3D sonic game behind Unleashed In my opinion. Its unfortunate that its getting unlisted on steam but I'm very excited for sonic x shadow generations. (I just wanted to write a review before sonic x shadow generations released, but I still mean every word I've said)
Gotta pay my respects to this game, it's gotten me through some tough times and is one of the best Sonic Games out there. Short, but so damn fun to play. Hyped for Shadow Generations and it'll be fun to see what they do with the remaster. Still, as this game is, a fantastic time.
You guys have GOT to stop delisting games in order to push your stupid ass new games dawg, some will want to go back to the original, and that's ok. Anyways, sonic generations, this is still boost sonic at its peak, the controls are more streamlined that the previous boost games (and future ones for some very very odd reason), classic sonic doesn't feel all that bad either, and the level designs are all memorable (I believe there's only one stage here that overstays its welcome). This game's only real flaw is the story and voice acting, but be real, who is playing sonic PRIMARILY for story? Hell I skip cutscenes in sonic games with stories I actually like. Anyways, if there's any boost sonic to play, it's this one. It has the best boost sonic stages, and the other half of this game is a 2D sonic game. Beats the gimmicks for past and future entries after the grand reset after 06 graced the world with its brokeness.
It's the one I like the most because the land and grass textures are supreme.
The menu screens are so advanced I still don't understand.
The techniques used in this version are not to be missed.
I still wonder how far the team could take things.
Originally bought this on Xbox back in 2017, It is been my fav game since then, now I have (actually good) PC so I buy it once more (but guess what.. now I have to buy two copies of Sonic X Shadow Generations to keep the streak alive :)
Amazing Game i have it on the XBOX which i already 100% completed it. & like i said on the Sonic Adventure 1 Review, i hope shadow generations will be like sonic adventure 3, Also i have waited 8 years for Them To Finish The Generations Saga & i'm glad that they're, Hopefully we will get to fight the time eater & i'm Looking forward to fighting mephiles Again since Sonic 2006 & people hate that game for no reason cause that game was our adventure 3.
This game is definitely worth your money due to the modding community having great mods coming out for this game in 2024 so yes I recommend it

keyboard controls are awful to use and ingame only xbox button prompts are used
controller often disconnects or your mapping gets jumbled up randomly and fucking Y becomes the pause button for some reason etc
weird stuttering and what feels like CONSTANT dropped inputs which is a huge detriment for a fast platformer like this
and weird bugs where you get flung into the goddamn stratosphere probably because the original xbox 360 game ran on 30 fps while this is 60 and they didn't account for it correctly idk
also pretty damn cringe that they're making u buy the same game twice with shadow generations and charging $50/60, no way that game will be worth more than 40

Sonic Generations will always hold a special place in my heart. This game has seriously brought comfort over the many years that I have played it and it will always be one of the best 3-D Sonic games ever made. The culmination of iconic music and levels combined with amazing Gameplay for all demographics of the franchise. The PC version of this game is truly the definitive experience as you can take full advantage of over a decades worth of modding from the community, expanding the content of this game to even further heights. This is truly a timeless masterpiece from Sega/Sonic Team.
Finally, a good way to play Rooftop Run, a bad way to play City Escape, and a just alright way to play Chemical Plant.
Both Modern and Classic feel fun to play. Music is amazing and the game looks great. The only thing lacking is length and story. It doesn't run as well on modern pc now, and you may experience freezes or crashes sometimes.

controller inputs stop registering when you play for more than like 10 minutes, controlling with a keyboard also just feels horrible. game won't launch if you try to play above 60 hz, even then, the only option above 60 is 75. seems that modding fixes a lot of the issues with the game, but i shouldnt have to go out of my way to mod a game for it to work

I've always recommend this game to fans and people who love platformers in the past. Its a blast! its a game i come back to every year!
Unfortunately, this version of SONIC GEN will be leaving STEAM soon. Id recommend picking this one up before the remake (SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS) releases in October. If you want to experience the original unaltered version of Sonic Gen, pick this up ASAP.

Best boost Sonic game I've played. Really gives a sense of speed (which Forces failed miserably at) and has some of the best levels of the boost era. The classic levels are good but can have some frustrating moments. Classic Sonic controls better than Forces' version but nothing beats the original games. Graphics still look pretty good too. I hope Sonic X Shadow Generations is good because Generation is getting delisted.
