This game stole my will to live and I will prob never understand the basics of combat. But its ight
great game, hard to learn and keep up with experienced players, but awesome time
This game is absolute bullshit, evryone that play this game should uninstall and shower, specially those that are lvl200+
So simply put I love this game, If your somebody who likes challenging game play has a really good community that plays regularly, the community has grown small therefore you will often encounter quite a few familiar passionate faces every day that keep this game alive, I can't recommend for anybody outside Europe since the game is dying everywhere else. But if you are from Europe you will always find people to play with. You will always hear about the learning curve and yes it's going to be frustrating. But there are a lot of people in the community willing to teach you and help you become better. The game isn't always about winning and killing people, the duel servers are generally just a fun place to hang out so if you like GMOD or VRChat with a indeph melee combat system then I recommend giving this game a shot though I'd suggest buying from G2A or your prefered key seller since it's not quite worth the asking price anymore.
skilled players will make this game not fun for anyone who just wants to play it without needing to be at the top of the leaderboard every game. because they NEED that like a junkie needs his fix.
pve is fun, theres alot of community content but the community is dead so
its fun but if you have ping above 50, good luck. its incredibly hard to master and even if youre a baby with 5 hours and choose not to play rank, you will just keep getting obliterated over and over again. if you enjoy suffering then that's your game. as much as i love silliness and funny moments that are plenty its just tiring to learn it with little reward. /
Takes up a lot of storage space. Is on Unreal Engine, so bad optimisation. Consant file malfunction.
Amazing fun, ridiculously high skill ceiling. Some people are GOOD at this game.
Games horrible steep learning curve no good places to start team killing out the ass horrible community
this is the first time i write a review the game is good nothing is wrong with it except some small things that will hopefully get fixed i'm writing this review because i was permanently banned from a server for no reason the only thing i saw before getting banned was the guy laughing at my ping i'm literally in middle east UAE and the game has no middle east servers how is that my fault? as i said the game is good there's a lot of nice people but some people really piss me off kicking and banning for no reason
TLDR: The devs listened too much to the top 10% of players and now the game feels unplayable to those not putting 30hrs a week into this nearly dead game.
I played this game on day of release and put 40 hours in the first week.
This game has reached a semi-dead semi-unwelcome state where only the top 15% still really play it. The game sold over a million copies and had ~40k players for its first two months and then fell off to ~5, now it hovers at 1500 per day. I think this is because the only people still playing are the people who were good from day one or have put in the time to really stick around. The changes to shields in patch 10 resulted in a lot of people being unable to keep up with the higher skill players in the frontline and invasion modes. The changes to horses has also meant you can't really do a lot of the same silly stuff on those either. The game feels to have moved in a purely balanced 1v1 direction and it's real heart came from the silly character customization and voices and the lutes and flutes people and the shenanigans of combat. Now it's hard to land kicks, avoid being decapitated from drags in 3v3 scenarios, you can't rely on a shield to keep you safe, and horses feel super unpowered. This game isn't how it started and it's not the competitor to Chivalry 2 it could and should be. Bring back old shields, get rid of couching limits, maybe change the drags a bit, and stop focusing on the ranked modes that very few people ever got the game for.
Fucking hate this game with everything I stand for. The game is a shit fest of broken animations and servers more dead than my will to live.
11/10 would play again, would recommend to new players
Y'know, I really liked this game when it came out. Lots to experiment with and certainly best in its class.
I've redownloaded it a few times over the years to see what's changed and what's new.
This most recent attempt was the most abysmal. The official servers don't even work anymore, and the game runs like World of Warcraft on an '02 laptop on modern hardware. Save your time and live vicariously through someone who plays it for a living.
The combat is essentially animation abuse simulator. The skill is determined by how much you are a willing to stray from normal gameplay to the gaping abyss of tweaked DPI, uncanny animation cancelling and other bullshit.
nearly 6 years after release and it's as dead as expected. 1 server running the main gamemode - any other populated server is full of sweaty tryhards dueling.
can't recommend a title where 50% of the damage taken is from allies
plus new flinching system to punish you even harder for your allies' mistakes.
2/10 in 2025. Get drunk and use a longbow to have fun with this dead software.
good game play, good variety with all the ways you can customize your character and loadout, really fun game to kill time once you get a hang of it, but not a big fan of the community, lots of weird furrys and lgbtq+ members talking very sexual in chat and lewd images of some furry blushing or something along the lines of that in their pfps, tired of seeing the names and pfps after I die, I know theres options to get rid of it but there is one option that gets rid of seeing the names at the bottom middle of your screen but also gets rid of health bar, wish there was a option to just get rid of just the name, but keep health bar
For about 2 hours of my first few games I was mad, and thought that this game deserved a trash review, but after playing it a few more times and learning a few tips, I have become quite ok at it which is a feat of its own. After putting in a few hours of gameplay and mastering my own fighting style the game became very fun, even though sometimes I still whiff uncontrollably. Would absolutely recommend this game to people who are willing to put in the time and effort afforded to it. IF YOU'RE A CASUAL PLAYER AND ARE NOT WILLING TO MASTER THIS GAMES COMBAT STYLE THEN YOU WILL HAVE AN AWFUL TIME PLAYING THIS.
Very good, I love cutting peoples heads off and shooting people off their horses. The movement and attacking reminds me a lot like DayZ
Bad game. Bad combat philosophy. I bought the game with the interest of medieval combat. This is not medieval combat. This is animation manipulation, high skill floor to play, and a pretty gross community of "veterans" (imagine calling yourself a veteran on a video game, yikes.) The community is small and only left with people who've played this game like its their job. They'll tell you to get good and expect you to get killed for the next thousand hours on repeat until you learn the terrible mechanics and animation manipulation of how combat is abused in this game. After 50 hours on game, i expect to be able to fight, you won't. You'll just be cannon fodder. Do not buy this game unless your desire is to be cannon fodder for the people attached to their chairs on this game. It's not new people friendly and it has very high learning curve that most casual gamers will not want to take the time to learn.
This is an amazing game. It's full of chaos, fun, silliness, combat, bards, insults, hard battles, gorgeous armor and weapons, etc. However, the glaring fault lies in that skilled players simply bait a block or swing and then kill you. They do this over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, match after match. A heavy weapon like a maul can just float in the air in endless feints until they bait your actual parry or swing and then you are dead. It's a fundamental exploit in the most core mechanics of combat.
There is no actual swordplay and exchange of tactics if the uber-tactic, the one that has virtually no drawback and wins most of the time, is going to dominate the battlefield through its cheesiness. Buildcrafting means little when you just have to optimize for swing baiting. The only time the combat really shines is either 1v1s with really skilled players who can counter each other or in groups where the swirling melee is chaotic enough where using those tactics isn't as fruitful.
Again, combat being the core mechanism of the game, the weapons themselves don't feel all that different. All your swings it's like you are swinging a bucket of water. I dunno folks, its great fun but if you are actually trying to have some good fights with people the pros will just mop the floor with you using cheese.
I just get beat by high levels but i combat that by playing the cancer classes
its medieval COD. no magic, just a bunch of guys crushing heads with swords, hammers, firebombs, catapults- one of the most funnest experiences with multiplayer out there. some guy with an executioners sword will kill
you way too many times.
I wish more people played this.
Nothing beats this mindless slasher game. Great time killer. One suggestion though is that I wish shields were breakable. Theres no reason they should have unlimited stopping power
If you find better multiplayer medieval hack and slasher please let me know about it!
10/10
you can slice your worst enemies in half with a giant sword, and shoot them with crossbows and there's lots of bloody blood blud. blood bloody blood go bloodrrrrrrrrrrrr blood blood blood blood blood blood. blood
Not worth it now that the game is well into its life cycle and only the most loyal players remain to haunt the deserted servers preying upon noobs such as myself. You can't easily host your own private server to play with friends, so you're at the mercy of the randoms joining a public server and wrecking you.
Cool concept, though. If the game had a system to teach you how to play properly or some actual skillbased matchmaking it'd stay installed rather than just collecting dust in my library. I guess playing against bots is fun occasionally, and the demon horde mode makes that interesting. Ping/latency also plays a role in being able to parry and beat people.
Ironically the game that's supposed to fix Chivalry 1 issues is plagued with the same problems, crazy drag and acceleration of swings make the game look like LARPing knights doing break dancing. Compared to Chivarly 2 which I feel had a less hardcore fighting and more RNG/tactical mix imo, here in Mordhau you can barely defeat a level 200 sweatlord who has macros and increased dpi, maybe if you gang up on them.
And of course the game is full of russians and weirdos on chat.
So maybe go play Chivarly 2 for PvP.
At least it has a co-op mode, which is okay-ish, not great or good but okay-ish. In horde mode in later stages 99% of time you can't manage to protect the lord from the enemies, while in turn in demon horde mode the later stages is just huge spam of enemies, which you won't survive unless you spec into two-handed.
Only redeeming quality is the armors and appearance customization, which is pretty vast and interesting.
steep learning curve at this point as it's an old game. Lots of fun to be had, mad bant's in the chats.
If you enjoy first person swordfighting and stuff, this is for you.
Whilst its fun in places (and im alright at it) , it does needs work. Bad connectivity with the servers, bad matchmaking balance which needs limitations on weapon types.. Everyone half decent knows maul and halberd are ridiculous. The games fight style reminds me of LucasArts Jedi Knight series, but just not as good. There is not really any skill required IMO. Just swing someone in the back with a high strike weapon and stay out of crowds.
good game a bit difficult on beginners if you want less complex simpler version more meme-able try Chiv 2
sometimes its the worst game ( when you have to fight people who are over level 200 as they are too good ) or it is funny as there is friendly players playing lutes or people running past saying good day
Used to like this game despite being crazy unbalanced. I essentially completed the tutorial and was immediately matched against really high level sweats, but the mechanics of the fighting are overall pretty simple and it was still enjoyable. Played 20 hours in total over a few weeks when one day servers simply died and couldn't connect anymore. Waited a few days without being fixed and then uninstalled. I recently found out the game is back online and has some zombie update so I thought I should install it again and check it out but now I can't even go to main menu as it gives me EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION error instantly. I'll stick to Chivarly 2 which I discovered when MORDHAU died. It's also imbalanced as fk, you'll be lv 3 fighting lv 1000 tryhards often or even smurf accounts for no evident reason, but at least the servers are stable hah.
Lets be honest - Mordhau is easily the best "sword game" out of Chiv and ig For Honor, however. The animation "breaks" when you slow the swing so much so that it breaks the animation and it "phases" through the guard/parry needs to be addressed bad. I could not care less if its "high tech" its blatantly unfair when the whole game revolves around its combat system and having a tech that just "nuh uhs" your parry is straight cringe. Other than this its a good game. Still cant recommend at full price, not worth it, get it on sale like i did for 6$
Game created by Chivalry 1 players unsatisfied with Chivalry 1 Devs, Ended up being the people that gave them the fuel to create the game in the first place.
And now the cycle continues, Mediocre support from developers creates a unsatisfied player base, Fueling the players themselves to make their own Melee game because its so clear how badly of a job was done that they feel like they could do a better job themselves, Having Zero experience, Creating your own competition in a completely dead genre that previously had almost none.
incredible indepth combat system ruined by redditor fueled patches from 2020-2021. Some issues with things like CFTP being a complete total defense from any weapon in release. Solved by a CFTP Detector patch.
Mordhau went in the direction of Chivalry 2 and Nuked all the depth from the combat in favor of something so restricted it feels less complex than rock paper scissors, And we saw how well the Chivalry 2 Release did, Why would we remove all depth in the combat of the game in favor of something that cant retain any players.
No support or love for any game modes, Ranked, BR, Competitive, Even Horde didn't see any love or effort form the Developers team. Horde got some half baked reskin that honestly modders were doing a better job than you guys are with this newest horde release. How are you supposed to retain players with a SINGLE game mode. Frontline/Invasion cannot be the only game mode that sees any love whatsoever. The only other thing retaining players is The cosmetic system that was done quite well But only lasts so long.
Community Management and Previous balance team (if one even exists now) feels almost completely disconnected from the game outside of forum posts. At least crush tried his best to communicate with the community for better or for worse.
Buying community created content then not Releasing anything with the content you purchased from your community so we cannot play/use it anymore.
Create a Amazing UI, Then completely Gut the entire UI System for a console port half baked TERRIBLE UI System, Force it upon PC players UNFINISHED, with half of the images for weapons missing, and no ability to switch back to the previous UI and then NEVER update or fix it.
Why not just go Free to Play, And bring in a Fuck ton of micro transactions (Custom Classes and Weapon Skins were always the most popular part of the game Anyways) And with that money put love and effort back into making a amazing IP that did so amazingly well on release, But we somehow failed to improve upon, For ignorant or financial reasons i assume.
No Anti Cheat, Every cheater has to be manually visited and banned The closest thing to a anti cheat is client values being sent to a server created by the community.
The BIGGEST problem in my opinion, Server Side Registry for inputs. Did you parry that swing? No you did not it happened 40ms Too late for the server to register it.
Are you a higher ping player with around 60-70 ping? Well your Feint and Morph windows are Shorter than other players because the server doesn't allow for it.
I understand you fundamentally do not want things like Parry and Windows to be registered on client for cheating reasons, But we do nothing about the cheating anyways, Your weapons release and turn cap can still be edited with a memory editor so having parry and other windows on it seems almost meaningless. Maybe they did it to stop Desyncs that were happening in chivalry 1 but i seriously doubt it.
My fear with this IP and other game developers creating Melee games, Is that they will fall into the Trap
Triternion and Torn Banner have fallen into, And that making a simplified watered down combat system to appeal to casual play is the correct way forward for the genre.
When i think the Chivalry 2 Release was very clear that whats appealing about these games is the combat having a incredible amount of depth and complex systems intentional or not, Creating a very high skill ceiling for these games has always been the biggest factor for retention in the playerbase.
Would i waste 5 Years on this game again if i had the chance to take it all back?
Yes this game is fire.
don't buy this game. its filled with nothing but losers who have dedicated their lives to being the sweatiest motherfuckers on the planet instead of getting a job or something else productive. the game just fucking sucks, the weapons don't work properly, they are all effectively shorter than they appear. I think we all have an instinct i us that tells us if we can reach out and touch something, or if it is too far away... but that instinct doesn't apply here because you'll always think that you can reach that guy with your big-ass fucking sword, but you can't. you'll never reach as far as you know you could in real life with the exact same fucking weapon in the exact same fucking scenario. but that's not even the worst part. the worst part is the fact that everybody else can reach a million fucking lightyears out with their dumbass fucking daggers and shortswords. oh and dont even get me started on the blocking and shit. everybody elses weapons must be made out of styrofoam with how fucking fast everyone swings their fucking swords. I get hit with a bigass fucking slow as shit sledgehammer twice or even three times in the time it takes me to block one time with my shortsword. dont buy this piece of shit fucking game unless you like torturing yourself with stupid bullshit that doesnt make any fucking sense and goes against what you know should be possible in the real world. "realism" these nuts.
Nothing quite like finally getting the armor piece you wanted to complete your set and then getting clubbed in the face by the same ol' naked maul men.
You'll see people in the comments complaining about toxicity and hackers and yada yada - those have been around since the games inception, nothing new. There's still good people around. Plenty of 1v1 community servers to pick from.
For people considering, you should definitely at least try the game, it can be really cool when you've got a united team (as rare as that may be on those big 64 player matches). You can make the dream knight you've always wanted to be, with cool swords and everything. The combat mechanics are solid, but it has an INCREDIBLY high skill ceiling - don't try too hard, you'll be okay. It's a little grindy, but considering how long it takes to "git gud" as a player, you'll have the items before you have the skill. It has a PvE mode as well that is VERY fun (and convenient for grinding), you should give that a shot if nothing else. There are DLCS, but none are necessary, and this game could never be P2W with the way it works.
Just have fun. I certainly did.
Game is essentially rock-paper-scissors with a swordplay veneer. It can be somewhat good if you already know what you're doing, but to the uninitiated (people with less than ~50hrs game time) it gets frustrating, big time.
This game is saturated with toxic sweatlords, and not just in PvP. People will grief you for (literally) completing objectives in Demon Horde.
really fucking fun actually, make like a gladiator game or roman game now please and thank you
9/10
meh at best, melee has some advanced stuff but range needs love. Just running around with fire bombs and throwables was okay but not enough for what it is.
it is fun, but gameplay based around unintended exploits like dragging and acceling + devs and veteran players refusal to acknowledge this problem killed the game. unfortunately there is no other game with such an in depth melee combat system besides maybe chivalry 2
The game is janky, slow and very unresponsive. You'll press a button to run, kick or block and your character will stand there and do nothing for ages
garbage slow buggy horrible netcode, unbalanced, whole player base is sweaty vets just buy chivalry
More red parries than my hours in this game.
Save your money and don't buy this piece of sh!t game.
If you need more details on why you should not buy it read Graczent's review.
Its the best sword fighter out there. Maybe not as fun as Chiv but special in its own way.
"muh realism"
Meanwhile, archery/ranged combat can basically never 1-hit kill someone even if you shoot them in the head.
Also meanwhile, gaytards run around pants-less and helmet-less with a zweihander and hit you through your parry because they're abusing the absurdly longlasting hitbox of their sword and dragging their aimpoint AWAY from you.
Fuck this piece of shit game, "better than chivalry" my ass, just different bullshit.
Also on life support too, don't expect anything of significance to be added.
Very fun first person sword play game, the survival mode is peak. The only problem with the game is it currently is full of try hards and toxic people who will judge the way you play. If you can get past the toxic people the pvp is really fun, making a ballista in the middle of the battle field will never get old.
it's very fun, with engaging swordplay and a variety of weapons and armour to choose from, though, PvP can be very annoying at times, 8/10
Dead servers, and very unfriendly community. My estimate is that you have to at least dump 50 hours in order to get sort of good at the game. Because the servers are dead, there's barely any skill based matchmaking so you're only going to get matched up with cracked neckbeards who have 1,000 plus hours in the game. It's possible to get good obviously, but you're not gonna have any fun during the process.
Game has no room for new players. Community is now toxic and overun with weirdo's. Servers are dogshit and only saving grace is the occasional update.
