sometimes a game s so hard
i hate when i dont get the achievements
sob game
(2nd game this week, the other one, The Detroit After)
The Detroit After better than this one, this one little more difficult
Hard, but great.
Fun snes-style shoot-em-up with great music and graphics that invoke the classics of the day such as Gradius and R-Type, but with shorter levels, a map to choose levels on, and a save system.
Even with the framerate issues and playing at 30fps in 'slow mode', I tried the fix suggested in the reviews/discussions, but failed to get it to work. I still had a lot of fun with this one. Good level variance. Most bosses were neat, and I loved the fleet battles levels. Great in 2-player mode. Wishlisted on xBox to hopefully play at a faster framerate and beat it again. I picked it up for $2 in a recent sale. 7 hours was well worth the price of admission.
Long story short, it's a fine game but the mechanics are tuned quite sloppily.
The ship inherently moves too slow and the weapon mechanic works against the flow of the gameplay. The art is nice but the mixture of 3D assets with a pixelization filter and the actual 2D assets is rather jarring.
Good 2D shooting game with a nostalgic feeling.
Has a lot to enjoy between all the weapons you collect, the level design, and the overall visual aesthetic. Control is fully analog too, so dodge bullets with a full 360 range of motion and go full speed or slow down to whatever suits the mood! This game would be unplayable with digital inputs.
There's just a couple major issues I take with it. Dying feels too punishing since you are brought back to the last checkpoint of the level rather than simply respawning with i-frames like you usually do in this genre. It halts all the action and you're at the mercy of what the game deems a checkpoint from there. I'd much rather the devs would just ditch the checkpoint thing entirely. I also feel like although the level design is super creative, it sometimes feels like you need to know beforehand what the right weapon to use for a level is already going into it since you can't switch unless you game over and then continue once you've started a level. It feels very punishing when you lose power up progress on a little bit of everything upon dying and also have to go back to the nearest checkpoint no matter how far along you were a moment ago. The biggest issue with this is speed powerups. I don't know how you're supposed to play this game without scorts and at least 2 speed in some sections. Very easy to unwittingly put yourself in a checkmate scenario too, but you learn. Obviously the better you are the less this is an issue, so still a cool game that really does pull much of the best from the old school shoot-em-ups and mostly improves on it greatly.
Definitely complete the Dunarys level to pick up the scorts secondary fire, because they maneuver around your ship and block shots. The secondary weapons are not at all balanced with each other but pick this up (and later an even better version of the same thing) and you'll have a permanent partial shield plus added primary fire. I've obtained a majority of the weapons and the scorts really are just unbeatable once you get them fairly early on. Bombs (as in your consumable tertiary weapon) are only situationally good to grab since they're competing with shield and speed always, plus almost all of the bomb weapon types just feel too weak except for one which is story-relevant. Only get these if you have plenty of movement and a shield at the same time, or still just go for movement since losing any of it hurts way too much and again the fully analog controls means you'll never have to worry about being too fast to thread between dense sprays of bullets properly. Overall, great game. It's well worth its pricetag and as of writing this it's on a massive sale until the end of October so hurry! I've got my complaints, but this is all coming from a novice player. There is rookie mode which enables a 3-hit shield, but my pride won't let me play it as of now.
Certain bosses can still destroy you even after you have defeated them...it's trash!

10/10
This game is amazing. I came into the community hub shortly after buying it to say how awesome this game was when I realised this is the same people who made castilla. I was like.. oooh.. yea that makes sense.
This game is just awesome. It can get brutally difficult on pilot mode but that's how shmups are I guess. The sound track on this game is far better than that of Castilla. Gryzor87 did great on the music. Some of the tracks were absolute bangers.
Absolutely love the freeware version. Definitely had to get this paid expanded edition.
An amazing SHMUP that is a loveletter to some the best SHMUPs of the 16 & 32-bit era. Strong Gradius vibe to the general stage design that has you dealing with terrain as well as enemy fire. Decent assortment of weapon unlocks, for which the loadout can make a big difference depending on the stage. Lots of enemy variety; most of which are stage-specific to help keep things very fresh.
Some pretty tight dodging and narrow passages to thread, but the fighter handles superbly smooth. Bullet patterns are pretty fair-- nothing too crazy.
"Super Hydorah" is a great ode to shoot-em-up-classics like Gradius and Darius with a nice and retro-ry feel, a good soundtrack and nostalgic atmosphere.
The gameplay feels fluid and true to the oldies, the levels are diverse, there are branching parts plus there is a nice balance of powerup-mechanics and new weapons.
Like all the titles that Locomalito did, it is uncompromising and hard (you lose some upgrades upon death), although more forgiving than the classics (also I remember that the original "Hydorah" had far less savepoints during the campaign, so this version is a lot less harrowing).
A surely entertaining pick for every shoot-em-up veteran and/or enthusiast, that definetly deserves a broader audience!
(Get the free version on their site to try out first, if you are unsure).
If you liked Salamader, Nemesis, R-Type, on the old arcade. get this! the old skool keeps you trying!
Good shoot'em up made in the vein of Gradius. You unlock new weapons for completing missions so your arsenal gets bigger with each stage. There is no weapon swap so make sure to pick right guns before starting the mission. Graphics is ok but nothing mouth dropping. Music and sound is again ok. Gameplay is rather good and controls are tight. Don't expect it to be easy so I recommend to start on rookie difficulty first. There is plenty of different stages and at some points you are able to choose which path you wanna go next. For me the game was kinda slow but that depends on the taste. Recommend this one for Gradius lovers.
Rating 3+/5
Good game.
Absolutely one of the best shmups ever made!
Buy it. its very well made.
Reminds me a lot of Operation SpaceHog (freeware in the very early 2000's). Very fun! Well done overall, I'll be playing a lot more with time.
