A Note From The Developer:
First, we should address the elephant in the room - SAELIG has been in Early Access like 7 years. That's a long time. What's the deal with that then?
Well SAELIG is a hobby project I work on after work and on weekends, and there is no set ending or final design. SAELIG continues to evolve over time and is updated fairly often with fixes, tweaks, and new features. So while SAELIG is in Early Access, it's less because it's missing lots of content, and more because I see it as a living project. It's always evolving and changing, and I feel like the Early Access tag is a convenient way to indicate just how much aspects of the game can change between updates.
The Game:
SAELIG is a strategy game that blends simulation, RPG elements, trading, and business management, where your goal is to ensure the survival, wealth, and legacy of your family. Set in the Dark Ages of England, you’ll step into the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex during a time of turmoil. Engage in commerce, manage your enterprises, and make crucial decisions to carve your own path and leave a lasting mark on the world for generations to come.
You have the freedom to shape your destiny and play your way—become a trader, a business owner, a hardworking labourer, a landlord, a cunning criminal, a vigilant watchman, an influential abbot, a skilled hunter, or explore other roles. The choice is yours.
SAELIG features a dynamic, living world where every action counts, and each character leads a life of their own. You’re not here to save the world or play the hero—you’re here to live your life, make your choices, and do your best to thrive in a world full of possibilities.
SAELIG offers many possibilities for how you approach the game, giving you the freedom to shape your story in countless ways:
Begin your journey however you choose—from beggar to business owner and everything in between.
Forge your own path, regardless of your starting point.
Find love, start a family, and build a lasting dynasty.
Rise to power as an Abbot running the church, or take charge as a Town-Reeve, placing yourself above the law.
Take on a humble job and earn your keep with honest work.
Become a gravedigger, earning silver by tending to the dead, or care for the village children at the Learning Hall.
Forage for resources and sell your findings at the market.
Hunt wild animals and profit from processing their hides and meat.
Trade goods between markets and seize opportunities for wealth.
Establish towns and build them up alongside the other civilians.
Adopt orphans and send them to work in the mines.
Invest in properties and rent out homes for steady income.
Run a variety of businesses to supply towns with vital goods.
Buy land and develop it, helping the community grow.
Manipulate the economy, start fires, hoard resources, and create chaos if you wish.
Turn to a life of crime, stealing your way to riches.
Fight for survival against brutal Viking raids.
Win the favour of the King and rise to the rank of Thegn.
And so much more—your story is yours to create.
SAELIG has a living world that deepens your experience:
A living, breathing world where every character is striving to survive and thrive.
Every character has a full life, from birth to death, and the ability to influence the world just like you.
Experience multiple generations—when your character dies, continue the story as one of your children.
Dynamic seasons and weather that impact the environment and gameplay.
A variety of buildings to construct, purchase, and upgrade to suit your needs.
Fires and diseases that can devastate not only your home but entire towns and villages.
A living economy where every item is produced and consumed by the population—nothing exists without purpose.
A knowledge system that rewards practice and mastery, allowing you to improve skills through repeated actions.

Pretty solid game, has some bugs and quirks but I enjoy playing it overall. Based on some game play videos I watched on YouTube the game has improved overtime. I hope this will continues, keep it up Atorcoppe!
It just lagged and crashed. Clunky and far away from being a smooth experience.
A great LITTLE GEM for thoes who love games like "The Guild"
So me personally i really wish games had demos. this game alone took me 65 minutes to get through the tutorial. I took my time, and i am sick. 1 thing the game didnt mention but i learned. You can rebind Keys for controls like for the camera. I not a fan of the base setup lol. but i was able to change it to what I want.
The tutorial never mentioned or showed any combat, no archery any of that sadly. i was hoping to see what that entails.
so far this game is essentiall Guid game remake. but imo way better more detailed from what little i have seen.
other issue is something most everyone talks about. Inventory management is clunky, i know dev is looking into it, and i was aware of it Before purchase from reviews, and other vids all mentioning it.
overall i wish this had a Mid option. its not bad, not imo thumbs Up at this point of playtime. i doing the review now while its fresh. and deciding if i play more. or refund.... its hard for me to stick with a game when they dont even have demo. Let your product sell its self. i really like to run around for few hours get solid feel for the game. before being commited.
still 15.00 isnt end of the world either.
The better "guild 3" with issues obviously mostly the small stuff and unclear or rather diffculit spikes. I was supirsed how you can pickpocket people but the money gain is awful! However, for example hunting is very punishing where you can end up hiting stuff and it goes outside the map. Uppgrading stuff is also qute confusing for example I maxed out cart and suddenly I needed a horse to pull the cart, but in reality you should be able to push the cart. Another annoying thing that I found was that if you have a wife you cannot tell her what to do or how to get a job.
Besides these issues, the game defeintly has a really cool AI when it comes to compitition compare to the guild. Possbilities are also neat just wish the years were longer I felt like I went from 18 to 25 in NO time.
Fun for the amount charged for this game. Fills a medieval simulation type hole in my heart.
Basically some weird mix between Kenshi, Crusader Kings and perhaps Stardew Valley.
You play in simulated 880(?)AD england on one of a few decently sized maps with "passive" kenshi-esque control over your character. And it is one of those games that really simulate a world. The player is just one of hundreds of people populating it, no special treatment whatsoever. I love this design.
It's a bit janky, sure, the depth is limited, yeah, but it is one of those games that has a damn vibe. And it has this special quality of telling a different story each time.
Like, this one:
I started out as a bum, met a rich girl, proposed to her, got turned down because i didn't have enough money, grinded out the money... and then she had allready married another guy.
So i was pissed, moved to a different town, bought a hut, and met my future wife. And she is, without a doubt, the best virtual wife i have ever had (Which sounds way more sad than it is);
She has good stats in "waylaying" and melee, so she constantly gets into fights and tries to mug people. Sometimes she is successful and we get some cash, usually she fails, someones bones get broken and we have to pay a fine. When she isn't doing that she is buying ale and mead from our cash. Oh and yeah, she is also pregnant.
In short, this game is incredibly cozy and criminally underrated.
Saelig is a 10/10 medieval simulation that allows you to do practically anything from being a beggar to creating your own town or building a business empire. I was impressed with these options and the graphics. It's definitely on my top ten favorite simulations!
Impressive title from a single developer.
The first game in a long time to hit those The Guild 2 vibes, but SÆLIG has its own distinctive flavor. I like the setting and time period a lot.
Pathfinding needs more love, you can tell characters *really* want to follow roads, I'm guessing this is the most compute-efficient, but it leads to your characters taking detours sometimes, which can be frustrating in a game that's in part about time management.
Overall, it's a cozy medieval life simulation game. Thoroughly recommended
It's a surprisingly zen game. I did a trader start. Manually ran around moving goods to earn money. At some point upgraded my tent to a hut, planted a vegetable garden and grew my own food. Used my cart to continue trading, eventually saving enough to buy the local bakery. Now I'm employing 5 people and supplying the town with bread, while still earning money from lucrative trades.
The dev seems responsive in Steam Discussions and on Discord, and patches the game regularly, so for a passion project that's still very active after many years of development. So it's fun already, and likely will become even more fun as the dev adds more things to the game.
Fantastic game similar to The Guild, it is in early access but the developer updates it regularly, any bug reports are addressed quickly. Had an issue that the dev fixed for me in less than an hour! New features added all the time, buying early access games can be really risky but this one has truly surprised me with how active and helpful the dev is. I think this game would also be really enjoyable for any Sims players that like to mod their game to a medieval one, or enjoyed The Sims Medieval.
Any game that allows me to defecate in someones house as a form of revenge gets a thumbs up from me.
I love the idea of this game, really awesome!
However, it is a no from me as it stands..
The UI is a disaster.
1. No information about skills, what are they good for? Some are obvious but other less so. Ingame info is lacking in general. Everything should have long on-hover descriptions on what it does, how to use it, what is it good for, how to do it...
2. No progressbar on skills (shows only how much XP needed for advancement, like 0.767exp till level, what does that even mean? Am I 76% towards next level? How much do a I get per task? No explanation.. ).
3. If I level up a Skill, why not show it to me in the Log? You see all sorts of stuff but not leveling up a skill? Or really just show a huge "Archery leveled up to 15!"in the middle of the screen.
4. Camera is really poor. Zooming, rotating all is very wonky to say the least.
5. Animals are so hard to spot, and the trees being in the way is just very bad. Make the trees invisible when close to camera. This has been standard in gaming since at least late '90ties.
6. Game speed changes on its own sometimes. I have it on 4, pause the game (BTW why is default for Pause ENTER-key and not SPACE-key like in 99.9% of all games?) and then unpause and I'm suddenly on 1 speed. Why? Also I'm missing +/- speed change buttons. I have to use keyboard.
7. I should always see what my character is doing (think Sims), e.g. small icon next to their portrait, or even just text would be very helpful, as it often gets stuck somewhere doing something unproductive.
8. Queuing up tasks, (again thinking Sims)
9. Game is pretty slow even on the highest speed.
10. Leveling up skills should be faster in the low levels, and slower in the higher. Seems bit unbalanced.
11. Talking to other NPCs is really clunky. Even initiating conversation is uneasy as they are often "busy". Then the convo is basically randomly choosing things to say, to get + or - relationship.
That said, I really like the idea and will for sure revisit this game should more progress be done in addressing some of these issues.
This game is great, and I have heard the developer really cares about it, which shows. It also gave me a situation I wasn't entirely familiar with in video games, helplessness.
Short story time, skip if you want:
I was a town bard, playing my way to fortune by going to the town square and playing a tune, then using the money to buy housing and create a real estate empire built off of my music playing skills. It was going well, got another house and rented it. Got a wife, she got pregnant, both of us were making good money. Then the vikings attacked... My house where my family lives was inconveniently built right next to the river where the vikings tend to land, and you cannot directly control any other character other than your own. I watched in helpless desperation as they began torching houses, making their way to mine, and I had no weapon or armor or skills to be able to defend my wife, who was in my house sleeping. Luckily the town guard came in last second and saved her and my house, but how long until they come again?
It's strange being in the position in a game where you are the helpless villager, just praying someone comes in to save you livelihood.
TLDR game is great, feels like there is a ton you can potentially do and there's always more being added!
This is the game I have always wanted. The RPG is there, the town building is there, the AI is solid, the viking raids are great; I absolutely love this game. I lurked for 7 years waiting to buy this early access game and I think now is a great time to get it. It's very fleshed out from its previous jenkiness and it is just getting better and better. Dev, thank you for pouring your heart and sharing it with us.
I really enjoy the open world aspect and that so many options are available. Some minor pathing issues but otherwise very smooth. For the current price it is a steal, so begin your thieving carer and make the steal!
This game is not easy, but it is very stimulating and fun.
The people who reviewed this game saying it's boring, lack imagination. If you are used to FPS games, this is probably not the game for you.
There is no coddling, and the path you choose is up to you. That said, this is a living, breathing, game. The NPCs are competing for the same jobs and resources as you! This includes relationships!
Social interaction is paramount in this game. You will not survive without it.
The game is not without frustrations, however. But, that is to be expected with any early access game. The tutorial is too long and more confusing than helpful. The controls arent traditional, and that makes some aspects tedious. Like speeding up time using the =/+, for example.
I found this game while insomniac searching youtube, and I'm glad I did.
Kudos to the dev. Even though I've had to start the game 4 times, it might be my new addiction. I'm digging it.
The game can easily compete with its main competitor the Guild series and is even better than the Guild 3. The business systems are more refined and the game feels more fleshed out. While there are areas that can still be improved, the dev actively listens to the community, engages in the steam discussions and accepts suggestions, so I have no doubt in the future of this game.
Great game, constantly being updated, it already feels better than the guild games.
The fact that this developer keeps chipping away and has stuck with this project and not abandoned it like so many other developers is an absolute win. Well done good sir
SAELIG SLAPS.
GG
Good game that is constantly being updated.
A responsive developer with a solid foundation for a great economic simulator.
As a spiritual successor to the cult classic The Guild 2 this game works fantastically.. This game has a really in depth economy which any strategy game could spend hours delving into. Not only is the economy in depth but the numerous character iterations are fascinating. From avoiding tarnishing your reputation when committing crime to attempting to employing adopted children for free labor. I think any gamer who enjoys other similar in depth games like kenshi, dwarf fortress, or rim world should defiantly give this game a try.
beauty
Has been a great game thus far - good game mechanics, economic systems, graphics/models, etc. It is excellent to see the continued a regular release of updates from the devs. Would recommend if you enjoyed games like Manor Lord, Banished, or the Patrician series.
Amazing game, it should be way more popular
This is the best medieval life/business simulator I have played, it's amazing.
With a highly detailed gameplay evolving the people, relations, power, family's, seasons and businesses.
There is so much replay ability, multiple maps, and so many ways how you can play the game that it evolve every time completely different.
You can create your own business and supply it with ingredients from the market/traders or create your own supply chains (farms, mines etc.)
I love also the way you can improve and upgrade your businesses in several aspects.
I highly recommend this game to everyone that likes games like Medieval Dynasty, The Guild, Tropico or any other medieval city builder.
Did I mentioned Viking invasions... that you can turn that at on as well?
Amazing indie medieval life sim, decent graphics, good optimization, extremely active and responsive dev. Given that this is basically a one man team, the result is astonishing. For me personally this game > Dynasty games (Medieval, Sengoku) or Bellwright. It scratches the same itch but more rewarding and more QOL in place. It doesn`t have the same PR traction that the bigger titles have sadly, even though it is much better shaped than most of those. Give it a try, worth every penny <3
Bitch had more money than me, burned her house down.
Killed her in the middle of the town. What you gonna do? Throw me in a pit? I'll get out and impregnate half the ladies in the town, fuck it.
More than half the town is now inbred. I'm now the theign. You think your rich, I'll burn down your long house and buy it just to sell it to someone else.
Nice wife you got there, mine now.
Don't like the way you spread slander about me, I'll just rob your house every day. Still spread slander about ME? Time for me to become theign and kill you in front of everyone.
I am the law.
Worth it, hadnt played in a long time but now it's a very decent game, already more than worth it.
if you like the Guild games you*ll love this one.
very detailed and fun game. i havent even began to scratch the surface yet and im having a blast. very excited to see what mischief i can get my self into. I think its really cool the dev is keeping this game in a progressive state adding new stuff to it.
This game has really evolve well since I first bought. It is a challenging game, but really who wants an easy game that only takes a few hours to beat.
Very good game highly recommend it! Multiple paths you can take, well detailed and all done by a single developer who responds and is always updating.
This game is incredible! It combines survival, management, political, and economic simulation all in one. You start as a humble villager and then choose your path: perhaps earning the King’s favor, growing a business until you can buy an entire city, charming everyone as an entertainer, or diving into pickpocketing, arson, and other criminal stuff. The choice is yours, and it’s so cool!
Amazing medieval life simulator game. The living world with all NPCs living their lives, earning money, spending money, marrying, taking decisions depending on their situation and maybe even personality, instead of being on the some predetermined loop. This is what makes this game special, indeed a truly living breathing world.
You control one character, who has practically the same options as NPCs. And the freedom to live as a minstrel, employed butcher or get to own businesses or even become the most powerful and richest owner is entirely up to you. Plots to build on are limited predetermined on each map, but you can re-build houses to businesses and back and there is also an empty map, where you can found several villages.
Game is still in development and is planned to be undefinitely as ongoing life project. Solo developer Atorcoppe from New Zealand is a really active and nice guy, and if you want to be part of journey this game goes, I recommend the discord channel.
Ok, so this really is like the follow up that the Guild 2 should have had. It's just so good. If you like the Guild 2 games, definitely try this. I particularly love the new update, which is about building a town from scratch. So much fun! There is a lot of a variety of gameplay, and you don't have to follow a definite set path. The dev, Atorcoppe, is very responsive, and he is actively working on the game by himself, which is impressive. Give it a go!
You can be a crap boss.
its chill
Bought it today and played it the entire evening.
Yes, it's still a bit rough around the edges, as is to be expected from an Early Access title. But even so it already has a depth of gameplay that a lot of AAA titles don't have. It's not overly complicated, but there's a ton of things you can do.
Love the many details. Like how flirting is easier for women than for men. Hunted a deer on my way home, it was just next to the way so hey why not? Working as a teacher in the nearest town. Long commute every day, but good salary. Dream of opening a school in my own village. Very cool gameplay.
This game rocks. if you likes the guild this game is MUCH better in terms of " you can lose its not that hard to" and understandable/fun to play. Blending building ( dynasty and structures), upgrading skill ( and buildings) along with RPG elements on a open scale has been done perfectly> I have owned this game for many MANY years and the developer has stuck with it all this time. I'm a BIG fan of " the dedicated little guy" and this title with its creator has absolutely been a very wonderful experience.
Thank you Dev. I'm a big fan.
Well that 2 hours went by fast. I really like this game, especially because it's almost identical to The Guild which I also liked, but this has a better user interface. The game is time-consuming, and a lot of the game "play" involves turning up the time acceleration and watching (doing absolutely nothing) while you wait for some task (or series of tasks) to finish. So it can be boring, certainly. The interesting part is in anticipation of seeing how some plan can come together (or fail to come together).
The first hour went by slow, because the game is very slow loading the starting menu screen and even loading a new game. I complained about this and the dev responded wanting to see my laptop specs - but the bottom line is, the game just feels slow when loading when I'm used to games taking a certain amount of time on my hardware already. So I really had my doubts. I don't remember the Guild feeling this slow at load time. [Actually I have The Guild 2, but I'll just call it "the Guild".] I did, however, try closing all other apps so I'd have a little more RAM available when I started the game and that felt just slightly better. It still took about 3 minutes to load a (very early) game save for continuing the game I had just started.
My mind was changed after spending another hour just playing the game. Yes this game feels a lot like the Guild, but it has some really nice additional features, the first one being that I can set up the "urgency" of the game by changing how many days go by before a season changes, and how many years go by after 4 seasons change. These weren't configurable in the Guild, and so I always felt really rushed to hurry up and find a wife and pump out some babies post-haste. Now I can be a slob and take my time.
I'm playing as a landlord - so I have 2 little extra houses which collect some rent, on top of my starter house. So I set up the house to allow butchering and leather tanning. Then all there's left to do is go out foraging for food and firewood, and if I see a wild animal go hunt it, and hope to get a usable hide and some meat. It turns out this is a hard way to live, as there isn't a great abundance of wildlife. But I can't starve either, as there seems to be an infinite amount of vegetables available.
By accident (or curiosity) I pressed the "customize character" button, which then said "You will now customize the character, and any coats you are wearing will be put into your inventory". I thought "that sounds like a really bad idea, because I just want to go hunt that fox I had just clicked on." But no... there were no buttons for changing my mind. I hit "ESC". Nope - I'm committed. Then it took me to a screen to change the characters facial hair, etc... Oh god I don't care! So I clicked accept and then he's just out in the middle of some alternate universe and I have no idea how to get back to where he was before I hit that button! Ugh! I just quit the game. Too confusing.
The UI is also, in some places, deplorable. There are multiple currencies and plenty of ways to get confused, and there is a hodge-podge of trying to make up for it which could easily be clarified in the UI, but currently is not, and possibly never will be. There are also condescending people in the forums who will rave that there's nothing confusing here. It feels a bit like talking to a room full of gorillas. Not my cup of tea. The dev is polite at least. You have been warned.
"I don't want to spend time figuring out what you mean. I don't want to ask in forums or look stuff up in wikis. It should just be obvious from the interface."
https://steamcommunity.com/app/612720/discussions/0/4851030723893505584/
So... I think it's safe to say the game is not quite ready for prime time yet. Definitely rough on the edges. But there is some fun to be had too. I think I'll keep it, and try to get some enjoyment with it as it is. If you liked The Guild - you almost certainly will immediately feel at home here - this feels SO similar. Some people have said this is what The Guild 3 should have been. And I guess others like The Guild 3 better.
The dev is also very responsive to discussions/suggestions/complaints.
I think of this as a babysitting game. You have to point the character here and point the character there, and tell him to do this and do that. It's always one thing after another. He's so helpless he can't think for himself, and the same for employees after you've hired some. But all the other NPCs - they do think for themselves. They are going through exactly the same thing you are going through - same economy, same rush to the market to get that thing before someone else does. Hopefully you'll find a way to stay alive in this race.
Finally - what I haven't gotten to yet, because I just started playing, but what I like so much about this type of game, is the progression from being dirt poor, barely making ends meet, starving almost daily and working incessantly, to building up enormous wealth along with a city-wide economy. That is really the core fantasy, and it rocks!
i really want to like it, but it is very rough. the controls, camera, ui are all so jank.
With AI players all having their own goals and lives to lead, the game is never the same twice. Love it!
Saelig is what The Guild fans were hoping The Guild 3 was going to be.
As someone who adores The Guild 2 I give Saelig by highest recommendation, It rides that odd line between management sim, city builder and RPG beautifully.
PLAY THIS GAME and as a bonus give a small developer who are passionate about games and development support; they deserve your money and support more than Ubisoft, EA and Bethesda combined!
good
Bought this game in 2019 and I come back to it every so often... it only improves every time I return. However, the get rich quick scheme I had set up got removed.
The method would be to harass a nice rich lady/man into loving you enough to marry you day one... once you got ahold of their wealth, it was all well from there.
They nerfed the harassment method... I have to work for my money now :/
----------------------------------
It's all fun in games, would 100% recommend this as a fun game to relax on!
Really enjoy this game!
I discovered Saelig in February 2024 and just hit 1k hours of playing it. Obviously I love this game.
If you like this genre of life simulation in early medieval Britain you might want to give it a go.
The game is early access since 2017 and is constantly being improved.
It is amazing that a game is being developed by only one person. And he is answering questions and responds to the player community.
