If it weren't for the terrible combat system (you have to load every shot beforehand, plus the game can't decide if it wants to be slow or fast paced) and the horrible spamming of enemies in some places, this would be a really great game..
This game is awesome! Played through it a few times and I always recommend this if anyone wants a metroidvania recommendation.
This game is probably a 6/10. The platforming feels like a puzzle game, so even if the movement is innovative, it's not entertaining. Worth playing for some, but my time is too little
Probably the most unique platformer I have ever played. The control snaps to the closest platform, making platforming quick, snappy, and intuitive. The combat is maybe a little too easy, save the secret final boss (excellent boss BTW). The story is OK, but works well with the environment to produce some pretty good immersion. There are a good amount of secrets and the upgrade system is really good.
Overall a good game worth its price tag.
dont play tales of kenzera: zau, play this!
Really fun Metroidvania. The art style is fresh, and the boss fights are pretty awesome. The movement system in this game is really cool, and makes movement itself a puzzle, which is really unique.
Unfortunately, as the game goes on, a lot of the enemies and areas get more tedious and annoying to fight. A lot of the time these enemies would have been fine in a normal platformer, but due to the unique movement system end up feeling unintentionally difficult both due to the often janky auto-aim, and just the overall feeling of having too many plates spinning at once. Thankfully though, there's a built in "cheats," menu that let me cheese the last boss & mini-boss, because I'd probably just shelve the game before suffering through fighting them "the right way."
All in all though, fun game, beautiful art, great music, would totally recommend.
The game is a little fetch-questy in the late game when it comes to fulfiling the conditions for the true ending, but other than that this is a beautiful and fun game. The art and music are gorgeous and the mechanics and lore are inspired. I started and finished this right after the 2024 election so playing a game where you fight as the literal avatar of creative freedom against an oppressive regime really hit for me and cemented that freedom and art and expression are something that's always worth fighting for. 8.5/10
I recommend playing this on a tablet or smartphone. The movement is much more intuitive using a touchscreen. Worth playing if you want a unique Metroidvania experience with beautiful pixel art.
Novel, fun movement, and I like whatever's going on with its gentle, moody tone. A lot of fun in motion.
I'm having SUCH fun with this game. The lore, the graphics, the map, the design, the MUSIC is AMAZING.
This is basically a souls-like metroidvania.
I 100% recommend this game if you play with a controller. The reason why i DONT is because im playing with a mouse, and it's gotta be one of the most frustrating and annoying ways to play a game.
Half of the game wants to be played fast, with quick reactions, jumping from one place to another zip-zap-zoom. The other half wants you to take your time and look at where you would end up jumping to. The issue is when both of those happen at the same time while the attack has this AWFUL delay. You fire a small spread shot with your hand, but you cant just fire it, you need to HOLD the firing button for a while, which when you have to think fast and use it to stop or start the movement of platforms or to get rid of enemies while on the move its just frustrating and annoying.
Being able to tell where you WOULD land compared to where you are aiming sucks. There's a line indication to where you are going and another line telling you where Dandara will go if you jump, and if things are ideal, those 2 lines will be the same. The issue happens when you know where your mouse is or where you want to go but the game thinks you WANT to go somewhere else and jumps in a direction not intended. There are also a lot of times where you see a jump that you THINK you would be able to make but the game goes "Nuh-huh! You gotta be 3 pixels closer for you to make that jump!".
The fact that its a souls like means that your currency is tied to the place where you last died, and if you die before recovering your currency its bye-bye to all of it. I'm not going to pretend its a bad idea to copy that design, but it is frustrating and it makes me just want to close the game after i fail and miss out on a ton of money that i could have bought upgrades with. The game would be a LOT better if you didn't lose the currency to make upgrades that make the game easier when you die.
PS: You can suicide to re-spawn faster, but for some god damn reason that wont leave a body with the currency for you to pick up, so if you kill yourself you lose literally all your money without any chance to recover it, unlike if an enemy killed you.
Imagine dropping a banger in 2018 and your name’s still barely making a blip, while your rivals are swimming in hype 100 mil times more
HIghly recommended to be played with a controller.
Awesome music, awesome artstyle, awesome themes.
It is a baragaign for the price and should be tried out for the fun gameplay.
HIghly recommended.
This is probably the most unique game in the metroidvania format because of its movement mechanic. Instead of free movement, you can only jump to specific static positions. They give you a bit of aim assist to make it all pretty fluid. Eventually you're so used to it that you're just bouncing around everywhere like it was second nature. The other major element to this game is its soulslike difficulty both in challenge of combat and the very low number of check/save points. You get something like the estus flasks to keep you alive between checkpoints and if you die you potentially go back a long way and lose your "salt". If you die before you collect your salt, you lose it just like in souls games (the salt is used as exp to level you up at checkpoints). The good thing is that certain changes you make to the world are permanent, such as flipping switches, so you can still make progress.
Exploration and variety of locations is pretty good. Some challenges are pretty annoying but not so much that I ever felt like rage quitting the game forever. Most of the bosses are very hard. There are a few "cheat"/accessibility options that permanently mark a save file unable to get certain achievements should you elect to use them.
There's a bug or two here and there but nothing that interfered with playing the game (after I was able to initially get it to recognize my controller inputs). The art is pretty good IMO and the story, while a little out there, doesn't hinder the game. This is a very imaginative and well-realized game. The developers tried something new and it works surprisingly well. Having the game be so hard probably limits the audience significantly but this is otherwise an extremely underrated game. If you like 2D metroidvanis and a higher than average difficulty then you're not going to go wrong with this game
great game and story as well as symbolism reflecting ones internal doubt and struggles yet surpassing them in the face of hope for more substance
this got to be one of the most unentertaining games I've ever played. felt literally nothing playing it. feels like devs just made a check-box list game (it has this and it has that and everything else) but forgot that games need to be entertaining and this game is just not.
battles suck (also enemies design is awkward, why am I fighting some furries with medieval weapons lmao),
platforming nonexistent (you can pretty much just spam jump 99% of the time and be just fine),
metroidvania aspect is tedious (I had several times when I needed to go somewhere and had to run in circles between rooms because there was a single predetermined sequence of rooms you need to go to succesfully proceed. it is connected with the fact that you can only move on salt surfaces and sometimes it is impossible to exit room in preferred direction just because there are no salt surface awailable for your current sequence. it is hard to explain).
anyway this game really is just not fun and art-direction also horrendous (but it's subjective).
after this game you will add more salt to your zero gravity food
