This game is not fun to play because of the very weird controls that depart from standard platforming conventions. For some reason that I do not understand you have to use the left trigger for jump. The jump feels very floaty and wall jumping is a real pain in the @$$. And the game utilizes some sort of "freeze mechanic" which freezes you in mid-air and makes you temporarily invincible. This mechanic is also used to activate switches.
Glitch's Trip is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. It's a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience.
There's some pointless "plot" about intergalactic breweries destroying your planet, which means you need to do some precision platforming with an inprecise control scheme. There's also a bit of shooting, wall jumping, and you get a neat little shield with a timer (and you can't move when the timer is on).
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The game features simple, cartoony 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort mobile apps. 3D graphics programming does require a degree of skill and competence and unfortunately not all developers have the budget or talent to deliver this, despite 3D graphics cards hitting the mainstream in the 1990's. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. And yeah, this game is like a week old but they still didn't know how to do 3D graphics. In 2024. Even the Nintendo Switch that this was designed for can handle primitive 3D graphics. No excuses.
The controls and game handling are a bit sluggish and floaty compared to other precision platformers like Super Meat Boy. It's janky and unsatisfying to play in comparison to the best games in the genre... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing. They dropped the ball on this one.
Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
Glitch's Trip didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for dying (something that playing crappy obsolete platformers would make anyone feel like doing), trivial to get, but less than 37 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, even the people who own this game weren't interested in it.
The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
At only $1, Glitch's Trip is still... wait a second. It's not $1? It barely looks like it's worth $1. How much is it then? FIFTEEN BUCKS!?!@??? For Nintendo Switch 2D platformer trash? WTF were they thinking? This, ladies and gentlemen, is delusion manifest.
For comparison, the $15 asking price for this game could get you games like "Divinity: Original Sin 2", "Phantasmophobia" or "Valheim". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. Impossible to recommend.
