It's fun.
Each mind world is structurally themed in a cool way, they improved on the art without changing it at all and made it work.
The twists in the plot are all foreshadowed so it's easy to guess some of them, but there are a lot and the ones that got past me felt pretty clever.
I can sum the review as simply. "If you liked Psychonauts, you'll like Psychonauts 2". There's little things the first game does do that this game doesn't improve on. It has more QoL features, combat is better, story is better.
Only thing that might be a bit of a turn-off is it's not as puzzle heavy as the first game, so take that as you will.
Fun game. The controls work nicely. Plays well on the steam deck.
I lost tons of progress because it won't let me save my game, it auto-saves at checkpoints, its basically making me choose between completing an entire level and being able to exit when I need to. There is no gameplay based reasoning for this whatsoever, just lazy development.
probably the best 3d platformer I've played, I also really loved the story and characters!
it was really fun to 100%
Exquisite. Breathtaking platforming and level design, masterful cut scenes and style, amusing. This will be fun to play all the way through. An unlikely masterpiece.
This game is a lot of fun! I am new to the Psychonauts series so the gameplay took some getting used to. But after some remapping of the keys it quickly made the game much easier to pick up and play. The dialogue is funny and the game play isn't too challenging. Highly recommend!
Really awesome sequel!!! Psychonauts 1 and 2 are some of the best games I've ever played, really nice and fun platforming with good action, I like how you can mix powers to take down enemies, I thought they were gonna be a walk in the park, but sometimes they outnumber you and you get your butt kicked. These games are very underrated, but I wish they were not. The music and sounds are also very good, I love the jazzy tunes, the ambient sounds of the various levels, which the first game obviously had, but with the recent technological changes they sound even better. The characters feel very unique with their own personalities, some are not so friendly as others, but I still like them. Psychonauts games give the impression that it's a game for kids, and it is, but they are like Pixar movies in that they can be enjoyed by adults too, so if you can, absolutely buy this one. 10/10 for the sequel
This game is high budget cinema on the same level as Dreamworks, Pixar and any other studios who made groundbreaking animation in the last six years. This game has the craziest art, music, scenario, game design choices for the entire genre of platformer games. This game has a unique perspective on mental health issues with recognizable humor from Double Fine studio (thank you, Tim Schaefer).
Absolute love and respect for devs, original backers of crowdfunding campaign and also publishers (Starbreeze Studios and Microsoft) who (all of them) helped deliver this project as a finished title!
Psychonauts 2 is the adventure platform game with quirky story and charming theme of psychic spy at 1970 or 1980-year ish. Looks simple at glance but it is riddled with lots of feature that will confuse you at first but you will getting used to it when you play long enough.
The visual is amazing to me, it took effort to make it and it show when you find everything just click to the theme and find nothing weird about it. Music is good enough, raz is likeable guy and his ally are not just pebble on the road, kinda disappointed at the enemy but i guess because it rated for teen there are boundaries to be hold, understandable.
Overall good game to play, i'm satisfied with my purchase and i assure you this is not waste of money at any metric.
Really well made game with creative and unique levels and an interesting enough story. It got so many interesting Ideas packed into it that you'd think they'd run out at some point and then they just *don't*.
Was good enough that I went and bought it even after I had already played most of it on Game Pass
1. This is a comedic, psycological and a platformer type of game.
2. Boss fights are easy but you will die a lot when jumping on platforms.
3. This game is completely bug-free.
4. I think the story is good.
5. This game have lots of collectables to complete.
6. This game takes less than 30 hours to complete ( Main story + some side activities)
7. Would recommend buying this game on sale.
8. For me this was 8.5/10.
This has become one of my all time favorite games. Moving story, Beautiful visuals even when optimized for my toaster of a PC. The action is snappy and game play is addicting. The first one was already a masterpiece for it's time, but this elevates what was there 15 years prior to another level. Games like these prove that video games are a true art form.
fantastic game with a unique tone, humor and style all its own
This game is such a good sequel, it expands upon the abilities and how Double Fine refined the brain environments really goes to show how creative someone can get with making a level around someones brain and their inner turmoils. The platforming really gets a step up in this game is it is more creative with the new abilities you get under your belt. Not to mention the fact that the story itself is fantastic with twists that are well done as there are clues all over the place if you know what to look for. All in all a solid puzzle platformer that really pushes boundaries in how to tell a story in games and you really won't find much like it anywhere else
9/10
GOTY 2021
It's actually incredible that they were able to pull this off, an entirely faithful sequel over 16 years after the groundbreaking original. It's funny it's charming and it's just plain fun.
Bravo, Schafer.
I still think about parts of this game almost every day; brainrot is brainrotting fr
A fun collectathon with a good story and satisfying gameplay. A worth successor to the cult classic. If you loved Banjo-Kazooie or other similar games, you'll love this one.
This game is incredible! It plays beautifully, it looks amazing while still sticking to the original game's style, the music is phenomenal, the characters are still just as fun and interesting, the new areas are cool and a blast to explore, and the story. The story! It expands upon things introduced in the first game in such a captivating way! I absolutely adore it!
A solid sequel! A bit on the short side, so look for this on sale if you're in for cool level design, fun platforming, and charming writing. Doesn't feel like there was an over a decade gap between this and the original. Worth a play over the weekend.
A Collect-a-thon made in modern day, that has all the flair and charm of older generations. "They don't make them like they used to" not this time. A classic that not only holds up to the original, but may even surpass it.
This should be a standard for Sequels! I had fun with the first game and completely understand how it became a cult classic. Then I played this sequel and had my mind blown.
The art design stays true to the original but didnt really have any painful to look at characters (like Bobby Zilch in Psy1). Add on brilliant level design, with fun visuals and theme that really get you into the psychological aspect of characters were very well thought out. Even details of the collectables add a good amount of environmental storytelling.
Short game, I 100% it is 30 hours (and i believe my first 100% complete game). I wish there was more but the pace of the story was so well paced that I don't think I would have it any differently.
I'm Extremely happy to have experience this game. A lot of love went to this project and I see they did not disappoint their fans.
What an amazing 3D platformer! Excellent level design with a huge variety of locations and structures. It’s pure joy to explore the world around you! All of the abilities in your arsenal are used for overcoming obstacles, exploration, and solving spatial puzzles.
On top of that, there’s a decent combat system. It’s sometimes not very responsive, and not all abilities are useful in combat, but the developers still did their best to maximize the use of each hero's ability.
The story is pleasant and insightful. The visual style, music, and sound design are all top-notch. The humor is spot on!
Overall, it’s a brief review, but the game is definitely worth your attention!
was absolutely worth the 10 years i waited for it. a perfect sequel.
Funny, witty, and wild. I loved the first game growing up and this felt like such a fun continuation of it. The levels are so creative and moving around the crazy stages honestly feels pretty great.
Loved it!! From the start to the ending, this game kept me invested with a good gameplay, overall design and story. The comedic moments were very funny and the final act quite intense.
I highly recommend playing it, and if you have the time, playing the first Psychonauts game to get into even more in its Universe and get some of the references is also a good thing.
10/10 for me! (:
Arguably the best platformer ever when you are asking for more then a collect-a-thon with good gameplay. Really nails all of its elements in a big way!
Awesome game, great story, music, controls.
100% the game... but that means there's no more psychonauts 2 to play... the world is cruel....
Had an anitexy attack on the level about the character having an anitexy attack 10/10
What I like:
The whole game is just charming
A lot of wildly different and interesting levels
Very likable protagonist
What I dislike:
The game attempt to tell a deep story, but the characters are just not explored enough to make it work
Disclaimer: The playing hours in inflated due to me leaving the game on at all time. Not indicative of actual game length.
Wacky humor, fun abilities and colorful ensemble of characters with quite an interesting story that eventually grew on me. Expected smoother controls for a platformer. Some of the locations (read mindscapes) are absolutely trippy.
Overall, had a good time. No idea why this game is so underrated. It should have been more popular following after the remarkable first game.
Lives up to the original. Levels, art direction, overall setting are top notch. Combat mechanics and jumping controls can be a bit frustrating at times.
Overall, it's very good. 4/5 on the XPlay scale.
TL;DR: Two good games are good. + Jack Black and Pendleton Ward.
A fun sequel to the original. The Pendleton Ward Easter egg was really funny and I couldn't believe that was a real thing until I saw it for myself. Also, Jack Black is in it!?! That's awesome.
Yes, I realize this review is just selling a game on "x celebrity was in it", but it's a sequel. It feels like a sequel and it doesn't feel like they were trying to do any more or less than the original. Sometimes that's not a bad thing. If you liked the first, you'll probably like this one too. If you had some complaints about the first, this one probably won't address them in any meaningful way. I'm not complaining. I just can't place this as being any better or worse than the original and that's okay. If anything I respect that more than trying and failing to do better.
Close to a perfect game for me. It's rare that a game lives up to and, imo, exceeds the expectations.
There just is nothing else like it on the market, especially among platformers.
It retains everything great about the original and improves everything else. A fantastic polished experience from start to end.
As someone who did not play the first game I must say...
This game is great!
There were a couple references to the previous game I didn't get, but nothing crazy, this game is such a fun psychedelic romp through peoples minds to deal with their personal issues.
I just completed the main story and took my time in levels to get almost everything, but I am still missing a lot (I only have the first 50 achievements from the global achievements) so I plan on getting the rest.
Once I've 100% this game I look forward to snagging the original when it comes on sale.
If you're looking for an off-beat 3D platformer with wacky visuals and an engaging story and characters give Psychonauts 2 a try!
Less funny than one. Raz comes off as a loser while he was basically almost always in control in 1.
Platforming is great. Wish some characters had more screentime.
Good sequel to the first game. even if it took so long 15 years for a new sequel. they double down on the creative & artistic style of the first game and add more to it. great game enjoy 100% the game.
this game was awesome but sadly u cant replay bosses
TL/DR Highlights.
Practically every character in the game is both interesting and quirky.
It was frankly a joy to exhaust all the unique dialogue options with every NPC i encountered as well as stand around and just listen to the background NPC's chatter.
The level design is fantastic.
Almost every world you enter has beautiful, Varied, And unique art direction and gameplay.
Overall 9/10, would definitely recommend to anyone who is a fan of the first game.
Pros.
Feels just like your picking up right where the first game left off.
The story is pretty great and feel's like a direct continuation of the last game.
Character control feels tight and responsive.
General combat is pretty fun and can be somewhat challenging at times if your not just spamming consumables like a sissy.
Lots of platforming if that's your thing. It's not really punishing if your bad at it.
The attention to small details is also pretty impressive, I highly recommend using your clairvoyance ability on pretty much every NPC you see.
Cons.
A few of the collectibles are kinda annoying to get if your trying to 100% the game
Most of the platforming feels pretty fluid except a few sections where for example you have to change the direction while your swinging on a pole. It felt quite clunky and out of place compared to the rest of the game.
Rarely you can end up missing out on one time only character dialog by either moving to fast threw a area or getting your dialog overridden by random chatter from your character when picking up collectibles. (happened to me like 2 times.)
Negative Highlights ?
A certain section in one of the worlds in the later part of them game (Maybe 10-15 min's long) felt really out of place compared to the rest of the game. It had a quite jarringly different tone to it than the rest of the game and even compared to other parts of that very same world.
The area in question felt very forced to me, Like it was something they suddenly decided on or maybe something they went back and added or changed due to the lack of foreshadowing or anything it had and it honestly felt like it was added just to pander to a group of people of a certain orientation.
Adding to the forced or maybe rushed feeling of this one section of the game, It is also Ironically the only part of the game where i ever noticed you ever needing to turn around while swinging and deal with the clunkiness of having to switch direction while platforming.
These guys are all so silly, and I like how it continues from the previous game with the story and themes. I'd love to get more story from this world.
One gimmick and two mixed thems per level.
Excellent animations, music, story, arts.
A clever game, full of symbolic representations.
It's visually amazing, but entirely lacks the humor and character of the first installment. At least we have Rhombus of Ruin!
This game was a faithful continuation of the story of the first game. The gameplay was entertaining and addictive, and the story was well written. All-around a good game. If you were a fan of the first game, you will like this one.
A lot of pros and a lot of cons. Some of the most incredible level and world design I've seen. Seriously some banger levels early on that are mind-bendingly original. And fairly humorous in parts. But, too much gross out humor(?), poor combat system that's overused, filler content blocking an interesting main story and fairly plain platforming make this game hard for me to recommend, despite some of the pros.
If you played Psychonauts the original and are looking for a tried and true sequel, then I think you'd like the game and the story it continues. As someone who played this (and REALLY wanted to love it) I couldn't overlook the flaws above. If you think you can, then go for it. I am disconnected from the franchise, I saw a game with a lot of love put into characters and the worlds they occupy. But too many flaws to merit playing any further.
My recommendation comes from a place of simply not wanting to play it anymore. I had fun playing it especially early on. But these flaws irked me into this feeling, and ultimately I can't recommend a game that drives me to simply want to uninstall.
Much like other games from Telltale, there's a naive childish sense of wonder that resonate with me in these games - silly, but thoughtful stories wrapped up in a colourful fun game.
I didn't expect this to be better than the 1 but oh jeez. Probably the best game DoubleFine has to offer after Brutal Legend.
Final boss in the first psychonauts was a nightmare for me but here it was luckily a cakewalk, and good so, my nerves couldn't have handled another Meat Circus.
The praise:
- it's FUN
- feels, sounds and looks like psychonauts
- huge areas to explore and collectibles to collect
- real musical orchestral soundtrack, makes it feel like you play in a movie
- even after finishing there are more dialogues
The nag:
- raz double jump will be interpreted as wall jump too eagerly, resulting in character ricochet
- estimating jump distances is a trial and error, idk, felt too "fuzzy"
An absolute masterpiece. Still can't believe it was snubbed at the GOTY awards. Double Fine never fails to deliver unique, imaginative narrative experiences with heart and humor. Would love to see them put this level of polish on a remake of the original game as well. Only negative would be not having the return of the milkman.
Absolutely stellar game, a love letter to platformers and some of the most charming characters, and well written dialog I'm ever had the pleasure to experience. It was worth the wait for this sequel. It's fun and insightful in a way that's honestly beautiful to play. Come for the funny one liners and collectables and stay for a gripping plot and interesting twists and turns!
