Fun and unique gamplay combined with interesting level design that can catch you off guard if your not paying attention
A good platformer with a lot of fun ideas and dialouge.
A great game in every conceivable way except the controls can be a little off on loops and the Megaraph Fleet levels make me relive The Lion King on the Sega Genesis.
So like, this game is like if Sonic and Kirby fucked, fed the resulting child weed and crack, and somehow it came out looking like megaman
I love this game so much
pretty fun
Great game, Gameplay is a combo between sonic the hedgehog and super mario.
Really charming fusion of Sonic and Kirby gameplay. Feels like a classic from the 90s in the best way.
amazing game with a banger soundtrack
I might be hella biased but I like this more than Spark 3
Can really recommend this. Banger soundtrack and fantastic gameplay. Levels can be a bit long and enemy placement isnt always great but doesn't stop it from being one of the best platformers on steam.
Great soundtrack and Fark is really fun to play as.
Im sparkin it.
Fun little 2d platformer. Very reminiscent of classic Sonic and Kirby
Great game. As many others have said basically its like playing classic sonic game combined with kirby mechanics. Its far from a perfect game and there are some issues but for the price point I believe its worth it especially if you get it on sale. The actual amount of content feels worth it. There are slight bugs here and there but nothing game breaking. The story is pretty whimsical and nonsensical so if thats important to you it might not be a good game for you
Spark is like if 2D Sonic and Megaman had a baby that wasn't a fucking disappointment.
Super fun game!!! Like SUPER super fun game!! Each stage has its own unique thing going on and each costume does as well, which adds to the fun!! I love both story modes and the difficulty of each one; they add a nice challenge and makes you have to figure out your own way to defeat each boss. Spark, Fark, all of the characters, are super fun to interact with. So glad to have found this game. Highly recommend!!!
Fun game, really enjoyed it. Some of those later levels made it a little hard to come back right away though
Yes
Let me put it this way, It's rare for me to devote myself to 100%'ing a game that becomes extremely hard by the time the hardest modes are unlocked, but this is so exceptionally well crafted and extremely fun, that it didn't just make me feel forced to do so, it made me want to do it.
I've said multiple times that this game is like if Sonic, Megaman, Kirby and Rocket Knight Adventures had a baby, and it came out in the best way possible, and the music and aesthetics is something to behold as well
I highly, highly recommend it!
This Game has so many issues, Bad Configuration Mapping, Bad Resolution Scaling and also i heard it also can have Frame Rate Issues
AMAZING OMG ITS SO GOOD DONT SLEEP ON THIS GAME SERIES
amazing
Pretty much what it says on the tin. It was alright, but I didn't have enough fun to finish it. Maybe you'll like it more.
The game is certainly not without its faults. The bosses are usually super lame, the game is pretty buggy, and the powerups are very inconsistent in quality. But the core of the game is a blast in spite of these issues. The "collect a thon" aspect of many platformers is pretty much entirely absent, with the game focused around simply going fast in whatever wacky way it has cooked up. The good powerups are what make the game really shine, as the movement bonuses can really allow you to get creative with your traversal. The story and soundtrack had a few laughs and bangers respectively, but neither is a reason to pick the game up if you weren't otherwise interested. Freedom Planet (on classic mode) in many ways feels like a more refined version of Spark, but Spark is certainly well worth the price tag.
Spark the Electric Jester is an homage and spiritual sibling to the original Sonic the Hedgehog games on the Sega Genesis. While it replicates a lot of the good (and bad) of Sonic, it includes it's own unique gameplay spin that feels much more like Kirby. The result is a pretty fun retro-feeling platformer.
Good:
* The music in this game is crazy good. Especially near the end of the game, it has no reason to go so hard.
* The game has it's own design aesthetic, but it feels like a legitimate Genesis experience.
* The game features a large number of different 'powerups' that you can discover in levels and switch between, that all alter Spark's moveset and abilities. This allows you to experiment a bit with how you deal with enemies and platforming challenges.
* When you get the chance to go fast and run through the terrain, the game moves smoothly and really feels like the best fast sections of Sonic.
* Levels have a variety of interesting platforming elements like low gravity, speed boosters, goop that makes you double jump, and more. They are large and full of verticality.
* There's some cutscenes here that are rendered in a sort of old flash style that is a bit rough but charming.
* Spark is the main character, but there's at least one other character to play as with a different playstyle and multiple game modes.
Meh:
* Enemy design didn't feel that unique, and most enemies felt either trivial (only taking a hit or two) or annoying (taking many hits and doing very difficult-to-dodge attacks).
* Spark has the ability to wall-jump which is generally great and aids in exploring. However, it can make precise platforming difficult, since he's a bit sticky at times and you'll find yourself wall jumping or sliding when you don't mean to.
Bad:
* The storyline is...a mess. In the last few hours of the game, you are finally delivered a clearish mission to do, but the many hours before that feel like moving through pretty random places for no obvious reason, meeting random npcs with dialogue filled with dumb jokes.
* Levels are large and varied, but unfortunately much of the space feels somewhat wasted; there's nothing to really collect in the game, so any exploration you choose to do is only going to net you an alternate powerup. It felt like a missed opportunity, to not put in some more secrets to reward thorough exploration.
* There's a bunch of different powerups, but I found myself relying on only a few of them for 90% of the game. The wind powerup is arguably the most accessible and useful in the game, to the point that if possible I always tried to hold on to it and struggled a few times when I didn't have it. I wish some of the powerups had a stronger argument for choosing them.
* This game suffers from the same problem as the original Sonic games; on paper it's about going fast, and levels include sections where you get to move rapidly and it's super satisfying. But they are commonly disrupted and you are forced to slow down and do some platforming that can be really finicky. The choppiness of the gameplay gets annoying, especially when enemies and hazards are thrown in.
* There were a few moments of extreme slow-down in the game, and it didn't feel like it was meant as slow-motion; it was like the game was trying to emulate an older game console struggling to keep up with what was being rendered. That feels a little too faithful to a retro experience, or the result of some unoptimized game logic.
fun ass game like sonic mania
A great game with a few minor hiccups that remind me of yesteryear.
As someone who played the original Sonic Advance titles when I was a kid, this one felt very much so inspired by that series. The momentum of Spark, the dashes, the attacks, they were instantly familiar yet different enough to make them novel. Overall, I recommend this game but I wanted to air out a few issues I had with the game since I'm here.
As much as I liked a lot of the power-ups for Spark, many of them felt necessary in certain stages. There was a few stages in a row where I just so happened to never run into any, either because the levels themselves didn't have any or I just missed them since they're treated a little bit like secrets from time to time. This led to a few frustrating levels where I had none of the mobility-focussed power-ups and the stage clearly thought I should've. With Spark's momentum-based movement, precision platforming never felt as solid as the speed sections or when I was blasting through areas by chaining together attacks and dashes.
Speaking of the dash move, it has this weird momentum locking that was never quite satisfying. I think it's in place so you don't build up insane amounts of speed from nowhere, but then you run into situations where dashing at the wrong time kills all your speed, of which then you can't run up certain obstacles without spamming the dash button, which got old as the game went on. Probably a skill issue, but I can't imagine why the dash move was designed to have that limitation.
I enjoyed the various move sets that you can get as Spark, and like games like Kirby, some are more fleshed out than others, some are more useful, some feel required, etc. You can't really avoid that when you try to have such a diverse set of powers. However, something that was consistent across nearly all of them was a need to mash the attack button at some point. It got so bad my thumbs started to cramp during boss fights, so I wound up making a button mashing macro on my Steam Deck, which fixed the issue for the most part.
While I'm at it, I know this game was released many years before the steam deck, so I can't really fault it for this, but the pause menu has a visual glitch where it flickers the entire screen. It's like there's some gentle flicker effect that's getting exaggerated 100x, making it almost impossible to read the help text that's there for each power. It's genuinely a photosensitivity/epilepsy issue that should probably be looked into.
Other than all of that, the music was banging, the platforming was fun, the combat was varied and interesting, and I had an alright time with the first unlockable character despite some minor criticisms with combat and damage balancing, with some bosses taking ages to kill despite knowing their patterns. I only really played this as part of the Spark bundle I picked up, and had zero expectations since I really only had a knowledge of the third game. I literally knew nothing about this game, didn't even look at the store page before launching it and giving it a try, and I'm glad I did. I think it was a fun little retro romp with just a few of the classic retro blunders, easily worth it's $8 asking price, even more so if it's on sale. Looking forward to now moving onto the second game and seeing Spark in 3D!
This game isn't bad per se, but so far it's just been really boring. The gameplay is bizarre mashup of Sonic & Kirby with momentum-based level design and powerups with different elements and movesets. The problem is that there's no special stages or any kind of collectible to my knowledge, so the alternate routes and speed sections feel arbitrarily there to reference Sonic rather than being there as an extension of the design. The levels all just go on forever too with a consistently 12 minute runtime despite me simply trying to find my way to the end.
The powerups are also not copy abilities from the scant enemies that appear, and they feel randomly strewn around the levels without any strong purpose. In Kirby the levels are always tightly designed with whichever powerups you have access to in mind for combat and puzzles. The powerups themselves also just feel redundant. Most of them effectively do the same thing with the majority having a version of the same melee attack reskinned with a different animation. The only powerups that felt like they were actually related to the level design were the fire and ice powers which allow you to bypass obstacles like lava and water.
I haven't finished yet, but the bosses have been pathetic so far. There's no touch damage which is a huge positive, but the bosses have a lot of pauses as if there is touch damage. So, you can just stand inside their sprite and attack them over and over. Outisde of the intro boss, the level minibosses have just melted so far.
I can at least say that the art and animation are super solid, and the soundtrack is fantastic as well with its mix of disco tunes, rock, and electronic beats. That seems to be one thing consistent throughout all of Feperd's games. I don't know, maybe this is worth it for $8, but it really feels like an amateur fangame. And it's weird that it feels like that because Feperd is a veteran fangame developer, having done Sonic BTS and ATS. You would think that the design would be a little stronger with some games already under their belt by the time they released this. I'm looking forward to playing the sequels, but I don't think it's necessary to go back and play this game based on my experience. I don't even know that I want to actually finish it myself.
This is a 100% recommend from me, honestly a 10/10 game for what it was trying to achieve and I am so glad to have given it a try.
The power ups are good and fun to use, the music is top notch, the levels are beautifully designed and smooth to go through and the mobility feels so good to the point where I was loving zooming through the stages more than I was combat and platforming.
The bosses were really fun to deal with aswell specially when it came to trying out different power ups for different enemies and remembering boss patterns.
I can only imagine what the 2 sequels to this game bring to the table and I can't wait to play them!
This game makes me feel like I'm 12 years old again, sneakily staying up all night playing Sonic 2.
Despite the game beeing very unpolished and drawn out sometimes, I really really like this combination of Sonic and Kirby. Happy that Lake made some of his ideas from his fangames into his own game.
Levels are fun to run through, and the list of power-ups allow for a bit of different play styles to change how you move and fight. I find it amazing and the dialogue while not the best thing in the world, it's charming and put a smile on my face sometimes. I haven't finished the game and I'm 4 hours in at this point but I look forward to what I'll find at the end!
More than just Sonic Advance 4 with Superstar hats - clean movement, banger soundtrack and unique stages the whole way through. Did crash a few times, but checkpoints often.
This right here is the real deal, y’all. Ain’t a game like it. Not only is Spark incredibly fun to control, the level design suits his vast moveset perfectly. You gotta check it out.
its like a classic sonic game if sonic was bad
so in other words its like a classic sonic game
The simplest way I can describe this game as is classic Sonic + Kirby, with a soundtrack that makes justice to both. Absolutely recommended.
Has some performance issues here and there but they didn't bother me enough to make the game unplayable.
I got curious about this game because of its soundtrack. So many bangers, so what do they play over? The answer is the most delicious action platformer I've played in a long, *long* time. The controls are easy to pick up, and extremely rewarding to learn the ins and outs of. The level design is spectacular, once i realized that i really dont need to be joshing to play fast and get good times i had insane amounts of fun exploring the levels as i went. No need to get caught up on missing something that's behind me, there's the same amount of alternate routes, skilled shortcuts, and cheeky rewards for pushing boundaries with your powerups ahead tenfold. The art is beautiful, every level and character you meet are distinct, and none of the level gimmicks feel annoying or too forgettable. I've just finished the first story, and im pumped to see what else is in store!! (having listened to the soundtrack a bunch, i did get excited to hear the "special boss" jingle at unlocking Fark's story. that song goes so fucking hard)
it’s peak.
:)
puta jogo foda

I like this game a lot, especially as a Sonic fan. It has fast-paced and fun level design, good combat mechanics, a cool story, and some of the dialogue is pretty funny, too. Aside from some minor bugs when playing on Steam Deck, my only issue is that I found literally no reason to use any ability besides Edgy. It allows you to walk on walls and up slopes without losing speed, and pair that with the double jump, which gives Spark a burst of speed, and you essentially have free momentum. That problem hardly takes away from my enjoyment of the game, however. It's a super fun game with some super minor problems.
sick game
The REAL Sonic 4
This game was a lot better than I thought going in, and I was already looking forward to playing it after looking for something to scratch the action-platformer itch.
It is genuinely one of the most fun and unique 2D platformers I've played that sells you in on the spectacle (the music especially is awesome). It is rather buggy, performance is spotty, and the levels can go on a bit too long for my taste, but the gameplay, the presentation, and the story its telling makes up so much on whats to offer along with great replay value.
All of this was experienced on a vanilla version of the game, no mods. If you're a brain rotted Sega and 2D sonic fan, this game is for you. As for me, I am absolutely not the target audience. I'm more into Megaman, Igavania's and Vanillaware when it comes to 2D side scrolling. I've only done enough to unlock Fark bc i wanted to see what was up with his kit but... I think i'm just gonna have to entirely pass on that and put it on indefinite hold.
The platforming was... Serviceable. I heavily dislike a few of the levels though, left me thinking "get me outta here, please." Thankfully knight charge attack and the board kind of helps skip through a lot of stuff. Really not a big fan of momentum physics. Probably the reason why i thought about going back to sonic advance series but stopped myself thinking "nah, that's not a good idea, ever." I don't hate sonic, he's part of my childhood, but i certainly have fully developed what my preferences are. Also, this game almost ruined pinball for me.
As for everything else, it's all pretty solid. Simple story with a simple... Twist around the last stage i suppose. You do get an instance where you go "Super." OST/BGM tracks are absolute bangers, i would very much shell out some extra green for that. If you like Megaman X's dash and charge attack, Kirby's ability to get new powers on the go, and Sonic running and level design, this is certainly the game for you. Dashes have an I-frame window for spark if you time it to the attack cue's of the bosses, which was pretty fun and skillful.
Also would like to mention bugs or any technical errors i have encountered. Have not done a full play through test on the steam deck, not sure i could put myself through all that trouble. But in some stages the pause menu error is the only issue i've had, and a minor one at that.
Peak
Game is great, no real game pad support unless it is Microsoft proprietary Xbox controller, which kind off sucks if you have an NES or SNES style controller, even worse support if you have a Sega console game pad for PC, other than that, it is a pretty good Sonic clone, controls just like one, I would recommend you play KM instead of using something like a Sega, NES, or SNES game pad, I know that ruins the emergence. Still great game, would I have bought the sequels can't wait to finish this game, will update on the review.
This jester is so electric
's pretty neat :)
