Definitely an amazing game, even though the graphics aren't as good as today's, it is expected sense this game came out in 2009. But even though it was made then the mechanics are next to perfect, I honestly don't think I've ever played a game that was this good before. Long story short, it is amazing and for a pretty good price, get it if you can, trust me you won't regret it.
The game is showing it's age for being a 20 year old game but is still decent. Squad AI bugs out every so often.
One of the greatest Star Wars games to ever do it, but a deeply flawed one that I hope gets the change to shine greater in the future.
Much like it's budget cousin WH40K Space Marine, Republic Commando is a linear, story-focused action game shooter that nails the source material. The diegetic nature of the UI and mechanics let you slip easily into the clone trooper commando boots it wants you to march 8 hours in, and it does it extremely well.
From issuing orders to your charismatic and memorable squad, to breaching doors, to taking down Spider Tanks, to wiping the blood and oil off your visor, the presentation is top notch. It's exactly why I would constantly trade my PS2 for my friend's Xbox for weeks at a time, all so I could play Halo and Republic Commando and experience the lovingly crafted sci-fi boots-to-the-ground FPS campaigns.
And once you install the unofficial "remaster" fan mods? Boy howdy are the license holders sitting on solid gold, let alone a Space Marine 2-level sequel.
That said, it's still got a myriad of issues that last up until the game's Halo 2-inspired cliff hanger ending.
For starters, and the most important, the shooting simply doesn't feel that great. The DC-17m looks amazing and has a super fun gimmick of switching barrels for gun types, but none of them have the punch and satisfaction one would hope for. The assault rifle is inaccurate and fiddly, the sniper rifle weekly "pews", the pistol is barely usable, and even the gimmick weapons (a cool shotgun, a Geonosian laser beam, etc.) lack something.
The aforementioned beautiful presentation is nearly at Metroid Prime levels, but the lack of feedback also affects that, too. The edges of your screen being the commando visor is one of my favorite aspects, but it shakes so often as to be nauseating; in the third act something was off, and it would jitter at the slightest mouse movement. I had to turn it off entirely. The game thrives on that helmet HUD, and removing it feels like I'm experiencing a horrible UI bug, naked and unfinished.
Enemy encounters, too, can often be overwhelmingly difficult, one of the causes being the often unsatisfying weapons. Sometimes the game throws so many waves at you that I can't tell if it's a bug or a purposeful unending wave. Enemies also have pinpoint accuracy and seem to favor you, so it's hard to get things done when you squad is pinned or down, and that's not including how bullet-spongey certain enemies are, particularly Super Battle Droids.
The story is also nothing to write home about, but it's serviceable. It's a vehicle for you to jabber with Fixer, Sev, and Scorch while travelling through Republican warships, the forests of Kashyyyk, and the crags of Geonosis. It all culminates to one of the most infamous cliff hangers in video game history, rivaling Halo 2--except Halo 2 got a sequel and ended perfectly. I'm a sucker for huge cliff hangers like this one, but it pains me to know that we may never get a sequel. Disney is the evilest company in entertainment--and the richest--so you can bet there will be no budgets for video games outside of terrible Ubisoft and EA slop.
A wonderful, deeply flawed gem of a game I often revisit. Two short sessions and you'll be wishing you could see the end of Delta Team's fate.
This is my favorite Star Wars game, the gameplay mechanics are totally unique and very fun to play with. Despite this game being pretty old, (and a bit janky due to its age), it is so much fun to play. The story is great, especially if you're a fan of the clones.
Great game still in 2025. The graphics aren't GTA 6 style, but thats ok. The great gameplay makes up for it. Plus I like how you get goo on you after stabbing a trandoshan.
Played this game for the first time this week, and I was missing out. This game deserves all the hype it has around it. Highly recommend playing it if you haven't.
A Star Wars game created before...the dark times.
This is a game that Star Wars fans need to play at least once. It is a great representation of the heart and soul game creators use to put into games in the mid 2000s. Where imagination, respect for source material and new technology worked in beautiful harmony.
This game is what the industry use to make when they cared about not only the gaming community and the product they were creating; but also respectfully adding to the larger Star Wars Universe.
This is a fantastic Star Wars experience. And every time I play it, it reminds me that long ago in a galaxy far away...AAA game companies use to be great.
Haven't played this since I was a kid. The nostalgia is insane and the gameplay is just as good as I remember. If you haven't played it then please do yourself a favor and get it. Excellent use of ten bucks imo.
Very fun, but not really meant for modern computers, has some bugs and the squad mechanics can be annoying. Highly recommended if you do some fixing in the settings and are fine with the jank! Great story and cool levels as well as fun but challenging combat.
Amazing game with an amazing story but horribly optomized for PC as most older titles are. I love the squad system and the gun play is good, especially for its time, but the bugs, glitches, and overall lack of qol features makes some parts less enjoyable or almost unbearable.
masterpiece, the combat the gameplay every mision is made with love, WE WANT SEV BACK
(ash - clones) "shame that everyone's the same"
This game is such a classic and a masterpiece I recommend playing this game my rating I give it 10/10
As a long time star wars fan I've always wanted to play this and didn't play it growing up which I'm surprised I didn't when I played a ton of star wars games. I absolutely love this game and have been enjoying it greatly!
By today's standards Republic Commando has not aged well. Linear levels, no actual progression in terms of upgrades or perks, no collectables or secondary objectives and a story that's not very exciting and ends on a cliffhanger for a sequel that never came. So, why do I recommend it? Well, maybe it's nostalgia or maybe there's something there. The atmosphere, music, banter between the squad and overall feeling is just so immersive! The game actually makes you feel like you're leading this special ops team behind enemy lines characterised by the orders you give them, the banter and the way it gives the freedom to assign them to prepicked locations, which dictate what weapons they'd use. Sure there are frustrating parts like the enemies having a bit too much health sometimes and on the hardest difficulty you can just get one shot if you're not careful, but overall I think, nostalgia glasses fully on, it's a great game.
A classic for its time.
Good story, decent combat and even afew surprises for any new commandos going in blind.
If I ever set foot in Star Wars it'll be with a Heavy ACP Repeater.
This is one of the oldest games I have ever played... but it doesn't feel old. Actually it feels new because of the design of the campaign:
It just has a few missions to play but in those missions it really feels like a complete operation. First you need to elimate them, go there, capture the objective, destroy this etc. but all of these makes sense why you do it, instead of feeling like repetetive missions.
The ai of the squad is so great that not only you really put the effort of the role as a commander but also were totally useless without them. I sometimes got down a lot and the clone troopers needed to revive me that I much, that I felt more like I was the bot.
Stuff like controls and user interface aged totally fine. I never had an issue about that.
The story is fine. Because of this game, I actually found out why they prefer laser blaster instead of guns with normal ammo.
So yeah all in all this is definetily one of my favorite Star Wars games ever and now I understand why so many people want a sequel/remake. Star Wars Republic Commando is masterpiece!
Star Wars' Halo Deserves a Sequel
Why another Republic Commando game, or one like it, was never made is baffling. Complete with squad tactics, tough enemy variants and weaponry, but with a terribly rushed and sudden ending with a random rock song in the credits (but nowhere near as bad as that credits song in The Acolyte.)
I was so into this on Xbox way-back-when that I spent a good deal of Geonosis shooting other Clones, hoping that that would somehow make a few less adversaries for Order 66. I took Star Wars very seriously (unlike Dave Filoni.)
STAR WARS™ Republic Commando — a Star Wars game I didn’t know I needed, but now I can’t imagine having missed.
This game hits differently. It’s not about Jedi or lightsabers. It’s about grit, steel armor cracking under pressure, tight corridors, battle cries, and a squad working together under fire. You’re not a lone hero — you’re a soldier. One of four. And you feel that. Leading Delta Squad isn’t just about tactics — it’s about connection. These guys aren’t just AI. They’re your brothers in arms.
Yes, the graphics are dated. But the gameplay? Still sharp. The squad controls are simple and intuitive, your teammates act smart, and moments when you storm a door or set up an ambush together — they’re incredibly immersive. Each mission isn’t just a level, it’s a piece of a much larger war, and you’re right in the thick of it.
There are flaws. The game can crash occasionally, some enemies are straight-up bullet sponges (looking at you, Super Battle Droids), and a few weapons feel too weak to bother with. And the ending… it hits hard. Not because it’s bad — quite the opposite — but because it feels like the start of something that never got to continue.
Now I get why people still talk about this game with such love. It captures the tone of the Clone Wars better than many shows or films. The bugs, the droids, the ship corridors, the intense firefights — it all just works.
If you're playing today, I highly recommend installing Republic Commando Fix and First Person Legs mods — they make the experience smoother and more immersive.
The only thing I wish for is more. More missions, more squad banter, more closure. A mission during the Battle of Coruscant would’ve been perfect. Or even a simple upgrade system. But even without that — Republic Commando is something special.
A true gem — tactical, raw, and unforgettable.
FOR THE REPUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Epic game it's one of a kind and deserves more love)
Definitely a must play Star Wars game. I mean... fight for the republic, free wookies, slaughter slavers, clankers, and bugs as the badass Delta squad. What more could you want?
✔ Solid gameplay/gunplay
✔ Immersive & relevant lore
✔ Surprisingly decent squad control
✔ Shoot stuff
✔ Blow up stuff
✔ Free Tarfful
✔ Good save/load system
✔ Reasonable difficulty/challenge without being annoying
✔ Entertaining dialogue and characters have life
I'm having an absolute blast, wish it was longer. We need more games like these
think of it as a star wars-themed HALO CE but with ai teammates that you can command in combat. theres a lot of things to like about this game from a star wars perspective. the game actually puts a lot of emphasis on tactics and positioning. the commandos have a suprisingly tactical behaviour and the game nails aspects like door-kicking strategies very well.
the enemies are given more justice here than in the prequels and clone wars. the super battle droids actually fit the "super" title for once as they feel like two-legged tanks. from my experience of playing various star wars fps games i would def say this one has the best gameplay and mechanichs for its time. if it wasnt from the old graphics alone i couldve thought that this game was made somewhere in the 2010s.
the only thing i could complain about this game as that it didnt get a sequel
A great star wars game from 2000's, for me it stands in line with jedi academy. A short action packed game, I'm not a victim of "graphics are everything", so the only things I'd say are: the gameplay, level design, how the game feels... it is definitely showing it's age, but if you enjoy old games, this is a gem.
By far one of the best older star wars games. Although this game has started to show it's age with it's graphics and A.I. it's overall game play mechanics is still an absolute blast to play through to this day. The idea of using 1st person shooting and tactical placements with your squad of clone commandos makes this such an iconic and unique experience. (Classic Soundtrack, Nostalgia, and prequel fun!)
Lastly Although the games settings does NOT have controller support, YOU CAN STILL PLAY WITH YOUR XBOX CONTROLLER. You just need to set up your controller configuration on Steams "Big Picture/Game mode," and use the mouse in order to select different game modes and menu commands, but the in game performance can still be fully utilized through classic Xbox Button layout.
Probably the best classic Star Wars game after OG Battlefront 2.
I love how it makes feel like an actual commander of your squad.
Absolutely love this game, only a few problems though: One, no one plays on pvp servers at all. Two, resolution options are kinda old, I'm stuck playing this game on a 2560x1440 monitor but at some weird stretched resolution. Three, might just be a skill issue, but some parts can be very challenging. Btw, any game devs out there, I would kill to see this game remade in unreal engine! Super fun game, definitely recommend!
i remember sitting in my dads lap and watching him play when this when it first came out
and to play it as an adult now feels great. this game in a masterpiece and deserves a remaster
Quite possibly the Best singleplayer shooter experience of all time.
The only negative comment I could make of this game is that the campaign is a bit short. However The missions we do get are all amazing and action packed and i would much rather that than a drawn out boring campaign. Delta squad's charming banter is forever imprinted onto my memory and I would not have it any other way.
Lucasfilm please Remaster this game and fire Kathleen Kennedy
This review in video form!
I'm going to recommend you install some mods. Apparently it has terrible mouse controls without fixes, and a lot of widescreen formats. So google the RC Reskin Remaster Mod from ModDB, follow the README, have a better time. I didn't realize you could boot the game from Steam after installing mods, so I used a different EXE which did not track playtime (but this is after about 9 hours).
Star Wars: Republic Commando is a Linear Action based First-Person Shooter, with tactical team management. In a galaxy far, far away, the clone wars have begun. You play as RC-1138, nicknamed "BOSS", a genetically enhanced clone. "38" is assigned by the Republic to lead "Delta Squad", an elite team comprised of 3 other enhanced Commandos. You and your squad mates must work together to accomplish critical missions across 3 key locations within the galaxy in order to turn the tides of the war. Pretty exciting stuff!
The game is a first-person shooter. You always carry two main weapons, the DC-15s Side Arm Blaster (which is underwhelming but has infinite ammo) and the DC-17m Modifiable Blaster Rifle. The blaster can be configured into two alternative modes, a sniper, and a heavy grenade launcher. Alongside these four options, you have a free slot that you can use to store weapons you find in the field, or more likely take from the broken bodies of your enemies. It's a shame you can only carry one additional weapon because they're fun to use. But, the way the game is structured , you'll likely need every weapon you find because ammo can get to be pretty scarce when the enemy is throwing huge waves of tanky enemies at you.
But your weapons will only take you so far. It's your team, and how you command them which is the real weapon. Let's talk about it.
Around any given map, you'll see world objects that when targeted, show you icons and holograms of your team. Push the interact key to command one of your squad mates over to it and they'll take that position. There are many different types of these: the sniper point is pretty common, you can have a guy lob grenades from a point, you can even have them man enemy turrets after you free them yp. Sometimes you can have them set traps, or explode obstacles in the way of weapons caches. Whatever you think the best strategy is in any given moment, you can command your boys to carry it out. Even if there isn't a world object, if you're looking at an enemy, you can use the same interact key to have your team focus fire on that enemy, which is key for taking down a big or important target, and critical to success in some missions. On top of these, there are four generalized commands that determine what your squad is doing at any given time.
I was initially a little hesitant about all of these systems and being in charge, because it sounded overwhelming at first. But, it's extremely intuitive and makes for an incredibly satisfying gameplay experience, which I was actually really quick to pick up on. All combined, the blending of each and every one of these systems, brings out a unique gameplay feeling... of playing a puzzle type game.
If i'm being honest, Republic Commando is a pretty simple game. But you're graced with glorious moments where it challenges you. Where you're faced with a tactical situation that seems impossible. Where it seems like winning would be against all odds. You really MUST command your brethren, in a smart way, in order to survive, and succeed. There are some missions that I would consider extremely difficult if you can't think strategically about the environment, your weapons, the enemies, and the battle that will commence.
There are several of these missions in the game, at least one per locale, and I have to say, they are the exquisite desserts to this fine meal of a game. When you're really thinking critically, commanding your team effectively is super satisfying. And sometimes, you do it so right, that your squad leaves without a scratch on them.
As an entire package, I cannot believe that we have not got a sequel or a spiritual successor because this formula is electric! I simply could not get enough of it. I beat it on Medium, then immediately started up playing on hard difficulty again. It's that good!
So now for the question everyone is wondering. Is Star Wars: Republic Commando worth playing 20 years later? Honestly, even today, I am considering this to be a masterpiece game. I feel it's important to note that this is an extra weighty recommendation from me because I have no nostalgia for it! This was my first time playing, and it plays extremely well. Republic Commando gives you a gameplay experience that you can't put down until you beat it. It's so fun to command Delta Squad, to hear their banter one with another, to participate in some of Star War's most iconic prequel battles, to use the weapons from them, and be the boots on the ground within them. Hope you give it a try! Thanks for Reading.
After playing through the game (mostly on easy mode because i suck at First person shooters, especially on PC admittedly so a game like this is basically practice for me in a way) i am beginning to understand why people like it so much.
I just wish the ending had a bigger payoff and didn't leave me as sad as i was, though for what reason it left me sad i don't think i should put in a review for spoiler reasons (even though this game is 20 years old almost give or take)
Simply put though, this game is really fricking good... even though i found some enemies to be either to be ltieral bullet sponges (even on easy mode) sometimes (not always but man time sensitive objectives and bullet sponge enemies is a bit stressful at times ngl) and some weapons to be almost bordering on not worth picking up because they were more or less as weak as the pistol (but i loved using the pistol compared to those other weak weapons tbh).
Overall, although i'm sure some of the more zealous fans of the game and similar SW games might hate me for this, i am giving this game a solid 7,5/10.
All i could ask for is More payoff in the ending, getting to see the end of the clone wars from the perspective of delta squad (at least a mission on coruscant (alternatively in orbit during the huge battle of coruscant in episode 3) or something like in OG battlefront 2) and optionally a skill tree / upgrade system (or just a wider variety of equipment) would be really cool for a game like this and in my personal opinion i would probably give it a 10/10 in whatever reality where these 2-3 things is the case. Sadly, this reality is not one of those :(
I highly recommend the game for people who are fans of the Star Wars universe. There is also something that is nice with the simplicity of older games like this, mechanics are few and it's very easy to learn how to play.
I did not like that enemies are able to take huge amounts of damage on the hard difficulty.
I hope this game gets a remaster with updated visuals and maybe even improved AI?
Best Starwars game ever I really wish people played online though its smooth and ahead of its time 10/10 PLAY ONLINE 2025
Short, but nonstop perfection in every possible aspect. My favorite Star Wars game of all time.
An incredible shooter even without the Star Wars name. Unfortunately the game is pretty short but maybe that's a good thing, maybe one day we'll get that long awaited sequel
A fun team tactics game with some pretty good team AI. It has a lot of variety while still relying on the same mechanics throughout. It's one of the most unique game experiences I have had and making it Star Wars themed is just a cherry on top. There are some game breaking glitches that occur from time to time that require me to reload, and it crashes a little too frequently (at least once every hour and half).
Excellent game and much more memorable characters than current disney "Star Wars".
THE EXPANDED UNIVERSE NEVER DIES
LEGENDS LIVE FOREVER
FUCK DISNEY
i had this game back on the xbox and man its just as good as i remember. I wish they made a sequel... rest in peace you magnificent game.
classic game! lots of fun great story line. true to the Lucas Arts vision. Characters are fun and engaging
radical old school memories, this is what star wars should of focused on. for a 2006 game with its graphics and helmet visor screen, its really just awesome, wish it was remasterd or a second one was made with todays graphics and abilitys.
they really Dont make games like this anymore if you watch the extras u can see how much effort they really put into this game its not very long but its quality over quantity
This Game was amazing and hard in its time of development, but still a great game to play. It'll test your skills almost every mission you play, command your squad where you need them to be and make sure there healthy! The ending was great wish they would make a remastered version or a new series! This game was amazing! SHOUT OUT TOO NEW STREAMERS!!! THIS GAME WILL MAKE YOU RAGE!!! LET'S GO!!!!!!!!!!!
This definitely needs a remaster ASAP. First-person Star Wars squad shooter is underrated.
really good Star Wars game, but oh boy, the enemies do NOT play nice with you if you don't know what you are doing
Right from the start, the missions start to get more and more violent and difficult to overcome... fighting the flying enemies seems easy until one appears with a flamethrower and kills our entire team... even on Easy you can't overcome the first 2 missions... conclusion... wasted money buying this game!!!
I repeated this part of the mission countless times but we ended up getting nervous because we couldn't get through the mission and the game, instead of being entertaining, is a nightmare.
This game hits the spot so well, actually being able to play as the Delta squad is sick. They sadly shut down the online servers but the campaign is so nostalgic and worth playing. I would highly recommend playing this game.
A game with a nothing story, enemies that are either bullet sponges or bullshit, that really should be a game I don't recommend, but I simply cannot because of how cool this game makes you feel. Somehow despite all of it's flaws the rule of cool just skyrockets this game considerably beyond what it deserves.
Dated graphics and clunky gameplay. I don't neccessarily mind that, and I bought it for roleplaying clones in the SW universe. Roleplaying immersion was thoroughly ruined though by the devs' choice to give each clone their own voice. Of course I'd have preferred Dee Bradley Baker or Temuera Morrison, but I would have settled for any unkown voice actor as long as it was a single voice actor.
How am I supposed to imagine being a clone among vode like that? Sorry, not my cup of shig.
Republic Commando is simply one of the best Star Wars games around. The voice performances are great, the combat is great, the music is great, and even the graphics look good despite being an older game. I simply love this game.
It's like Band of Brothers, but Star Wars.
10/10
this was the coolest game ever when it came out still is even better on the steam deck shame no multiplayer the customizations you could make to your clone look cool
Still one of the greatest games ever made, and has a squad management system that works as good, or even better than so many games from the time of its release up to today. The sound design was easily the best of the best, and the combat for it's time rivalled anything and everything. I have no idea how many times I've played through it from start to finish since I first bought the original on CD back it in 2005, but it's definitely double digits. The disc didn't survive it's overuse, but luckily Steam brought it back to me.
It was an honour to play something that the developers obviously cared enough about, to ensure the heart of the source material was there. The immersion in that world is almost timeless still, and I could play it for another 20 years.
(That being said you ARE going to want to grab an easy mod if you wanna play it in at least 1920x1080. And fix the super fast mouse on the menu. The discussion boards gives a few to choose from)
This is the definition of lightning in a bottle.
