Nice attempt to replicate Vanillaware game design. A bit junky and rough, it's still a nice game, especially taking into accout it's price.
The game is really fun, the art is very nice, gameplay and progression are satisfying. HOWEVER, making the player go through an unskippable cutscene every single time they die to a boss is REALLY bad design, specially when your game has bosses with instant-kill moves (I'm playing on lunatic, I imagine there are no instakills on lower difficulties). I have no problem with the difficulty but these cutscenes make for a terrible experience if you are stuck on a boss, if the custcenes were skippable I'd have no issue with it. Still a nice experience overall.
(Edit: I've now got 100% in this game, besides the issue I mentioned above I think that slow weapons are pretty much unusable until late game where you can spam skills with them since using regular attacks is awful with those, also there's pretty much only one skill worth using and it trivializes every single boss in the game since you take no damage while it's active you can just keep chugging either rage potions or elixirs while using it and it will shred absolutely anything. So yeah, difficulty is pretty poorly balanced, with lunatic mode not even being actually hard, just some bosses have certain moves that are overtuned)
Vagrant is an immersive indie RPG that combines stunning 2D hand-drawn visuals with fast-paced hack-and-slash gameplay. Players take on the role of a mercenary exploring a rich fantasy world filled with lore, challenging enemies, and engaging combat mechanics.

Whilst it harkens back to games from Vanillaware's catalogue (Dragon's Crown, Muramasa the Demon Blade, Odin Sphere) it has enough of its own character that makes it charming to play. It certainly is bit grindier than those games, as the Rift system and some exploits feel like an obligation to continue on the game's harder areas, but it didn't hamper my playthrough all that much. Get it on a sale when you can.
It's kinda fun at the beginning even though it really doesn't play like a metroidvania.
Mid-game boss fights are full of so much flashing, knockbacks, enemies, and projectiles it's hard to know what's going on.

The art style is cool, as in dragons crown, looks like handrawn and the bodies are voluptuous and muscular, the music is decent-good, the controls, animations and mechanics are good, lot of button smashing, equip stuff, and eat ingredients, you can even cook which grants buffs. At first i didn't like the way you move over the map, but then i got used to it. Overall is a decent-good metroidvania, if there is something i can complain has to be the dialogue font size, which is very small and not the best confortable size to read from far the screen, has to keep my head close while playing.
Another day, another bad game wasting time.
This game purposely DRAG on forever by placing very annoying enemies that you can't see (i.e. out of the screen) that can shoot non stop long range attack. Some of them can fly as well, and with the extra ability of TURNING INVURNERABLE AT WILL. Basically, you're standing there getting shoot off screen while trying to platform close too them, while getting shot down the platform and having to restart non stop. Not to mention, some of these attack can kill you in 2~3 shot when you're using the second strongest armour. Meaning that you MUST farm for hours to get a better armour or you simply can't proceed. Death mean losing everything and must be load from previous point. The absurd difficulty is meaningless. Don't waste your time with this one. The frustrating far outweight any possible fun that you can squeeze out of it.
The art style and the combat are the best elements of The Vagrant. The story is just ok, same as the characters; well, except our well-stacked protag, she is awesome.
The game can be finished with the minimum amount of grind, but if you truly wish to have an awesome and overpowered protag, you have to farm lots of mana, unlock the entire skill tree and obtain the best weapon and armor in the game. It will help you A LOT on New Game Plus, if you want to reach the second ending.
The level of challenge is balanced, the most powerful and annoying enemies, including bosses, are in the late game, and guess where you can find the best weapon and armor in the game. *wink* *wink*
In conclusion, for its price, and if the art style looks appealing to you, The Vagrant is worth trying.
good game
This is the 4th hidden gem I have found. I agree with other reviews that say 75% Odin sphere with 10% price, this is a good Vanillaware inspired game with low budget, quite rougher quality, but cheap price.
Positive:
1. Vanillaware inspired art, although quite rough, it is still good.
2. Price is cheap compared to its content. I played 16.5 hours in normal mode to get True ending. I think higher difficulty and 100% completion may give at least 20 hours.
3. Gameplay is quite fun. Many combos and skills upgrade.
4. Story has some interesting plot twists, not straight forward.
5. Overall OST is ok but this might be the weakest positive part. Game is set in fantasy medieval but few OST use guitar which I think not suitable.
Neutral:
MC is an attractive girl with big jug and....bikini armor. I like it but I think dev should give clothes option since it can give wrong impressison as dirty adult game or akward playing it in front of family. Even better, if each armor change mc sprite appearance in game.
Overall I would grade this as 8/10, I received more values compared to its price. If you still hesitated, please get this on sale, the price becomes dirt cheap.
PS: I wish developer continue making fantasy medieval game with Vanillaware art inspired in future.
Fantastic 2D action game, it scratched that Odinsphere itch that I was looking for.
It's also not too difficult, even on the hardest difficulty. It will offer a challenge but it's still doable.
Surprisingly enjoyed the game. Don't be fooled by the outdated look. Hope they make a sequel of it
A very nice Hack n Slash RPG that reminds in look, presentation and atmosphere to the Vanillaware Games you love on console.
The gamneplay is a little grindy but keeps yu entertained. I love the hand painted look of the game. You get lots of gameplay for your 3,99 Euro. Great Game, Great Deal.

Very fun game. No major flaws at all.
Could be good, then someone decided to come up with a key-bind system that makes you develop a tumour. I'm done.
Surprisingly good game, specially considering the price tag, in the artstyle it certainly drank from the Dragon's Crown fountain, as for the gameplay it's more your own style, instead of 4 classes you have 1 character but you customize your skill tree.
This game has pretty solid gameplay, combat, presentation and an amazing style. It's light on the metroidvania aspect, it's mostly straight forward and combat focused, which is a plus in my view as it's playing to it's strengths.
And for the price they're asking this is a no-brainer, if you like beat 'em ups, vanillaware and metroidvanias you're gonna want to play this.
Big boob
I think the marketing process for The Vagrant went like this;
"So, we've a game that's a half-assed Golden Axe clone. It's a bit crap. What should be do?"
"Add BOOBS?"
"Genius!"
Perhaps that's a little unfair, but the robust mammaries of almost every female character are probably be the only thing this game is remembered for. The game's plot is paper thin and, hilariously, often translated incorrectly.
As you bounce along there are plenty of enemies to smite, but it all becomes something of a button mashy mess. Bosses have a huge endowment of health, which prolongs fights to ridiculous proportions.
The environments and enemies are actually really lovely. The backgrounds have a water painterly style and the enemies have a somewhat European comics/ 2000AD look to them. Why the hell they then went for these Rubanesque women that have been ground through an anime filter is beyond me. They look incredibly stupid (although, as I have said before on this site, I have something of an aversion to anime stylings). Even when you change armor your character's sprite doesn't change, she is always in her leather bikini (although your weapon graphic does change. Hmmm...).
I picked this game up because a host of a podcast I listen to said it was similar to Golden Axe. The only similarity is that they are both set in fantasy worlds. Even Tyris Flare could wear the bras of The Vagrant's girls as an oversized swimcap.
I spent three hours with the game before I felt I'd seen enough. Some might get more out of this than I did, but if you want to try it out just wait for a deep sale.
75% of Odin's Sphere at 10% the price.
I really liked this one. Fun hack and slash style gameplay with lite RPG elements with character upgrades. Enjoyable story. Simple world to explore with a beautiful art style. Worth checking out for action fans. My only complaint is that it ended :).
This is an amazing game, I have yet to beat it but I can already tell I'm going to try and 100% it.

There is absolutely nothing special about the game. It seems to be more fleshed out then similar games, but suffers from the same very annoying thing (on that later). The graphic is pixelated, the sprites/bitmaps way too big and do not realy suit a sidescroller of this art. The sound is ok. The BGM is ok. A story does exist but is nothing too special or good, but not bad either (actualy quite typical for such a game). More or less, its an average casual game. You fight the mobs that drop random stuff, you collect it, with it you can equip yourself, ehance that equipment, have a skill tree that unlocks more combat skills and makes you stronger, at various points you can save and access those saves and there is a map (as said, more fleshed out and nice). The big problem is, are, the "bosses"... they do not have one large HP bar, but many. And ridiculous attacks. It does not take long to figure out whats going on and is not particularly difficult, the problem is... you destroy one HP bar and the next pops up and the next and the next... and basicaly, after 2 you want this only to be over, but instead you are stuck in the fight for another 3+. Oh and the story... way too much text, everything can be said in 1-2 sentences, but goes on forever. I want to play and not read a novel, if I wanted to, I would read a good book... and the same goes for the boss fights, I want to go on and fight the same moronic mob for 15+ minutes.
And so, if you do not mind such things, go for it. But if it annoys you as it annoy me, skip this game.

The art style is very good and I really loved the visuals, however there are so many things that the dev did wrong about this one sadly.
The game started good but towards the ends the map design was one of the worst I've seen in games.
What I hate about this game:
I wasted my rage so many times just to close the map.
The map design is awful, the verticality of the maps ruins it as the game doesn't have good mechanics for a platformer.
The final boss was ridiculous.
Monsters can attack from anywhere from the map, you enter a map and boom something attacks you out of the view. It doesn't matter if they see you or not.
Platforming is really, really bad.

Overall, I can't recommend this game to anyone. I think there are much better ones for even this cheap price this game has.

A beautiful game with a breathtaking Vanillaware-like art style and stunning character design. The story was enjoyable, and while the music was generally fine, there were a few standout moments that truly shined.
However, my main criticisms revolve around the rigid gameplay, where you don't have complete control over your character. While these limitations can be frustrating at first, they become more tolerable as you get accustomed to the game mechanics. Additionally, the UI and QoL features are some of the worst I’ve encountered. Many important pieces of information are either hard to find or simply inaccessible.
It's a shame that the developer seems to have stopped working on new titles, as there was a lot of potential and artistry here.

A great game that reminds me of Ori 10/10. But i dont think i can say enough but FUCK THAT FINAL BOSS FIGHT :steamfacepalm: I'm not gonna spoil it but damn man I have never been more pissed off at a game. I highly recommend
My biggest gripe is the map. Opening your map doesn't pause combat, but opening your inventory to eat 20 carrots does? Pick one or the other. Closing the map caused me so much more grief than it should have.
I can't tell you how many times I wanted to close the map by clicking the cancel button only to waste my rage on a skill.
The combat seemed very clunky for me. I enjoyed the ground combat, but the aerial combat kinda of ruined it for me. Could only get a few hits in before I get knocked away or the enemy zips away.
The game can be kind of grindy. Skills cost a lot and I think I filled out maybe half of the skill tree before finishing the game. Some items in the shop cost 5 million gold. I think the most i ever had was around 300,000. Sure, you don't have to buy it or anything from the shops, but then why bother having the shop?
The game is very inexpensive, but it was one of those games that I just couldn't wait to be done with.
Might be a good match for some, but it was not for me.
I played this all the way to the end, and the final boss is ridiculous. SPOILER ALERT: The Final Boss is at least three boss fights in one, and there are no checkpoints: If you die at the *final* final boss you have to start all over, and I was one-touch killed by her. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll play something else now.
hottest vagrant out there
The game has a surprisingly good cast of characters, for example a group of kids laughing at a hobo taking a shît on the streets.

For the 4.5 bucks I had to give to play this game it is more than worth it.
It's a great game for such a low price on sale. Apparently there's a true ending that I've missed, but that's fine. The combat feels good, though the difficulty suddenly spiked toward the end of the game. The upgrade system is pretty cool with flat stat bonuses and skill and combo unlocks. I enjoyed my time with this game!

Great game. Big booba MC, it has a cool artstyle that resembles Dragon's Crown. It also has a pretty decent combat system.

For its price, the game is excellent. Buy and support the developers, they deserve it.

The key word in this game is "jank". And I'll be honest, I usually love janky games. This though, is missing something. The animations are kinda stiff, combat doesn't evolve much, the pathways are very linear, the translation is awful, and none of this is particularly memorable. It's a game that clearly clears the bar from "bad" in my view, but only barely. Nothing new was attempted and the execution is far from polished.
This game is way too good for 5 bucks, let alone 79 cents on sale
