Just started playing this but i am so happy i did. This is a tough as nails crossover between Contra, Shinobi & Shadow Dancer.
Blasting all enemies and trying to dodge weapons being fired at you.
The pressing up to hide in a doorway and then shooting to kill your enemies feel great and it never feels unfair till now.
Going to play this game a lot more is my idea about this.
You can also play together in 2 player mode.
The game looks fine, sound great and plays even better.
If i would give this a rating then i would give this game (for what i have played) about 8 out of 10 points.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Get this game now!
Love the art style and retro vibe. Gameplay is sharp, no cheap enemies or bosses, you mostly die because of mistakes you make.
Great to pick up on the go and perfect for the Steam Deck.
Fantasic 2D platformer from Easy Trigger Games. Not as hard as Contra, but still quite tough. The game's very inspired by the eighties. Blade Runner, Terminator, The Running Man. There's even some Akira hidden in there. ;)
The audiovisual presentation is extroardinary, with a great cinematic feel. From crisp 2D textures to punchy sound effects and a killer soundtrack. A lot of interesting (and sometimes funny) bosses with great lines. Some are hard as nails, until you memorize their attack patterns. Great variety of weapons too, from uzis to anti-tank guns to skin melting plasma weapons.
All around an awesome action game. Might be even best in class. Give us more of this ETG, I'm definitely on board.
Wholeheartedly recommended!
Rating: 9,0/10
pretty good, I personally like 2d shooting so it's ok for time killing game for me
Its a fun little side scrolling shooter. Sprites give off a super detailed Amiga32/Saturn look to them. Killer soundtrack and killer vibes.
It is pure nostalgia, fun for a dime or a dozen
The Game is Fun. The Controls are great and there is cool asthenosphere thru the different stages. The Biggest problem I had with the game is the Difficulty Spikes. Especially during the Boss Fights. Some of the Bosses are so much harder that the rest of the Game, even on the Easier difficultly. As a casual gamer I am not willing to replay the same level and attempt to kill the same boss for dozens of time. I had a blast playing, but will probably never finish it, because it's too hard.
Originality, ideas, invention, humor, fun. It's been a really long time since I've felt like someone made a game truly "out of love" and for the entertainment of themselves and others. Here I have it again after decades. This game is a gem!
Huntdown (Easy Mode) Review
**Spoiler Free**
Quick Overview: Huntdown is a side-scroller retro arcade shooter and platformer that takes place in a cyberpunk dystopia. The game leans heavily into the pixelated arcade-aesthetic with simple but very difficult gameplay. While this is not a game I would personally recommend to the general audience for anything over $5, I do think it accomplishes what it set out to do successfully, and I might recommend it at full price to a specific niche audience that likes to replay these types of games over and over. Otherwise, the $20 price tag is hard for me to justify.
Gameplay: Huntdown is adequality described by it’s labels as a side-scroller, platformer, and arcade shooter. It doesn’t do anything too novel within this genre that needs to be explained. It’s pretty straight forward, and is exactly what I thought this game would be from the trailer and descriptions. And I get the feeling that was exactly what they were trying to go for: a nostalgic trip down a pixelated retro-arcade lane. The thing that sets this game apart, in my eyes, is the difficulty.
You are a bounty hunter trying to kill 4 gang leaders, and levels are divided accordingly. There are 4 gangs to defeat, each with 5 levels that end with a boss (the bosses are all fairly unique). Each level has 3 optional side objectives: kill x number of enemies, find 3 collectables, and complete the level without dying. There are frequent checkpoints in each level, and there is no respawn limit. So if you die, you respawn before that section and get to try again. This makes the game much more accessibly if you are simply trying to play through it and have some light-hearted fun. Dying doesn’t force you to restart the whole level or anything.
There are 3 bounty hunters to choose from. Each has their own primary weapon with unlimited ammo and a unique throwable item. During the levels, you can pick up a variety of secondary weapons and alternate throwables (each with limited ammo). These add some fun variety, but could be strategically saved for bosses. (Note: You can only carry one additional secondary at a time.) Also, the gunplay is just shooting in front of you. There is no manual aiming with the mouse/stick or even firing up or down. You fight enemies head on.
The platforming is straight forward. Think something like Metal Slug. There are usually a couple of floor tiers to side-scroll on as you fight your way through. So you jump onto and drop down from floor tiers. You can also crouch behind cover, and take cover in doorways. Cover only protects you from ranged attacks. Melee attacks and explosions will damage you even while in cover. But aside from this kind of “platforming” and maneuvering, it’s all pretty linear. This isn’t a Metroidvania where you’re exploring a map. You go from left to right. There is little in terms of timing jumps to not fall to your death or anything like that.
Overall, the game is a linear side-scroller shoot’em up, and it’s very simple to engage with.
Controls:
The controls are simple and straight forward (I played on keyboard, but they recommend playing with a gamepad). For my setup, I used the following:
- Move Left = A
- Move Right = D
- Crouch = S
- Take cover = W
- Jump = I (you should probably use spacebar, I’m just weird like that)
- Shoot = J
- Throw = K
- Dash = L
[*]Action/Switch weapon = E
As you can see, the controls are simple. There are a few quirks, like dropping down a floor tier is “hold down + jump”. But otherwise, it’s all very straight forward. Your primary pistol weapon is semi-automatic, and can require you to spam click to shoot. But most weapons you pick up are fully automatic.
Difficulty: I would say there are two ways to play this game: Casual or Hard-Core. For the casual player, playing on Easy (like I did) is a reasonable challenge. There are difficult sections, but with enough persistence and coordination, you can learn how to get past these sections. I probably died 1-2x per level on average. There were a couple of bosses that ticked that number up to 5 or so. (Apparently I only died 9 times on the final boss. But it felt like much more than that). So on easy, the game is challenging, but not unreasonable. There’s no way to lose, unless you give up.
If you want to play this game Hard-Core by 100 precenting every level on Easy, Normal, Hard, and Badass (which is necessary to get 100% achievements) it will probably be one of the hardest games I’ve ever seen. I don’t actually know what the skill level would be that you would need to just beat the game on those difficulties. But since you would need to have a No Death Run on each level to 100% the game, it is my belief that 100 precenting the game on Brutal is not humanly possible. I can’t even fathom the skill you would need to have to accomplish this. It feels like you would need to “Main” this game, learning every spawn event and attack pattern, and acquiring precise muscle memory if you ever hope to accomplish this. So, you have been warned…
As a casual experience, it can be challenging enough. It’s not very mentally stimulating, because it’s just a lot of action and chaos where you die, respawn, and try again. But I imagine as a game you try to master, it would require every moment of your focus and concentration over the course of your training as you attempt to do the impossible.
Atmosphere: The world of Huntdown is a dystopic one, where a cyberpunk reality has made for a depressing existence for the average citizen. Thankfully, you’re not an average citizen, but a bounty hunter. And your bounty hunting contracts require a ton of action, shooting, explosions, and fast-paced mayhem. This game doesn’t take itself too seriously. There is an obvious tongue-and-cheek satire to this game and how it presents itself. Things like the pixel artstyle and animations are very polished and made with care. But the tropes laden throughout and quippy remarks can be quite humorous.
Personally, I found the character designs of the enemies and gangs to be the most amusing. For example, having a gang based around ice hockey is kind of absurd. I appreciated the humor baked into the title. The locations are also quite visually varied, even though they stick to the same world and aesthetic. Each gang has their territory, and it shows.
The game also has a fair amount of gore. Explosions will blow people up into chunks of blood. I found that you don’t really notice this too much because it can be so chaotic, and you are largely looking at your own character since you are concerned with dodging incoming projectiles and trying to survive.
Overall, the game has a fun retro vibe with humor and chaos imbedded throughout. It didn’t really get me immersed in the world, but it was entertaining in a surfacy kind of way.
Conclusion: Huntdown really plays into it’s genre, and is a polished addition to it. It is a short linear experience that can be a mindlessly-entertaining romp. In the end, it wasn’t really my type of game, but that doesn’t make it a bad game.
If you plan on playing this as a casual experience, I wouldn’t pay more than $5 for this, so wait for a sale. There’s not enough content, and I didn’t find it entertaining enough to feel like my time was well spent. But if you plan on trying to master this game, you will need to replay it to a degree that I suspect is well worth the $20. So unless you are a hard-core gamer that likes to chase record-breaking performances, I would wait for a sale. Even then, I wouldn’t really “recommend” this game. But I’m giving it a recommend because I feel like the game succeeds in what it is trying to do. And if that speaks to you, you’ll probably have a good time.
Music is great, game play is in action. The style of this game remind me of many nostaliga of the past, in movies, musics, games. If you lived in 80s, 90s or even 2000 you gonna love this game,.
Really good action platformer, up there with the greats like Cuphead. If you are a fan of the run 'n gun action genre with stuff like Terminator 2 or Duke Nukem then you'll love this hot as hell work of art.
Old school sidescrolling action. Terrific graphics and gameplay elements, lots of laughs. Just about perfect in the genre!
!00% Recommended.
Good atmosphere, pretty cool gameplay and lots of gimmicks.
Cyberpunk run-and-gun is something I never know I want until I play it, and you won't be disappointed with this one.
Designed with modern sensibilities in mind, combined with old-school difficulty, you'll be having a blast hunting bounties and causing mayhem.
A fun side scrolling 2D Cyberpunk shooting game with 80s OST. It is quite short so recommended on sale.
The checkpoint is fair, if player die at boss stage, then restart at boss stage. Some bosses can be challenging.
The retro fun is definitely 8/10.
Excellent game, excellent graphics, excellent atmosphere, flawless gameplay—neither too hard nor too easy. A homegrown product that masterfully combines tradition and modernity, delivering the craftsmanship and comfort consumers expect in 2081.
A really fun, unique side scrolling shooter that is stuffed with incredible variety!
The most impressive example for me is that each and every level has a unique boss, many with multiple stages, and I can think of only one off the top of my head that felt anything below excellent. On top of that there's at least a dozen guns to pick up, three playable characters with different fire rate and damage stats and sub abilities, and close to a dozen sub-weapons.
The game itself plays great. Bosses are a tad spongey, but mostly tolerable since they're so fun. The stages themselves are a great break between bosses too.
The only objection I can think of is the way some voice lines lean a bit too much on references to oldish action films rather than saying anything beyond "neat, that was a line in a movie", but that may just be John Sawyer.
All in all, highly recommend even at full price!
This game is a must play! Please just buy the game, it's worth it.
Трезвым успешнее, пьяным веселее. ) И только с корешем на пару. )
Huntdown is all the fun you can expect as a side-scroll shoot 'em up, but with added depth of 2.5D dodging (imagine that characters can dodge into and out of another lane), suppressing fire, on-hit stumble (especially w/ melee), and a small degree of movement dash.
The game has a surprising variety of main weapons, secondary weapons (nade, molotov, etc), enemy types, and bosses, especially bosses' behavior and how each boss fight is set up. It's also really nice that there is a noticeable change in the map theme/layout as you progress onward to different areas.
With some satisfying onslaught moments on top of excellent art and sprites, I'd say this game is very enjoyable and worthy to get even at the full price (~10$ USD), close to Metal Slug 3 but without the alternative routes for additional replayability. 8.5/10!!
Huntdown gets so many things right it's hands down one of my favorite games ever. I'm a huge 2D/pixel art fan. I had this game on my wishlist for a while because I had some concerns about it. I'm so glad I bought it.
GRAPHICS
Just amazing. They're so fluid, colorful, and period-correct. The colors pop, the details are well crafted, the backgrounds are so immersive. I often pause for a while just to enjoy the backgrounds. There’s a lot going on in every screen and you can easily miss the details by just running and shooting.
MUSIC/FX
The tracks sound almost like the Mega Drive/Genesis and are really great. They fit the ambiance perfectly. One of my concerns was that the the voiceovers were going to be super annoying and out of place in a retro game. I kind of had some PTSD from going from SNES Mario to Mario 64 where he started talking. That was a huge turnoff for me. Turns out they are just fine. The voice acting is cheesy half of the time, but that kind of goes with the theme of the game.
CONTROLS
Controls are pretty good. I never took a hit or died because of a problem with the controls. Everything works great for the most part. One unfortunate thing is that you can’t dash and jump to pick up speed. You cut the dash immediately upon pressing the jump button and it feels unnatural.
DIFFICULTY
I’ve just finished my second run on Normal. I’m not super skilled and just play for fun, and I was able to finish the game in 11 hours the first time, then 8 hours. I didn’t get or find every item, though. Most of the bosses have a simple pattern that makes it easy to learn how to defeat them in a few tries. Sometimes on the first try in the beginning of the game. Later areas become increasingly more difficult, and you will die several times before clearing them, but I never felt like they were too difficult. Anyone with a little bit of dedication will be able to finish the game. I also thought the last boss was easier than some regular bosses. I died way fewer times compare to some other bosses.
OTHER THOUGHTS
Huntdown creates such a perfect 80’s ambiance that it makes me feel like I am in the 80’s (well, don’t actually know, it just feels super nostalgic). It has Mega Drive/Genesis vibes, even though the system would never be able to run this natively. Every stage has a boss at the end, and they’re all completely different, which adds tremendous variety to the game.
If you grew up in the 16-bit era, this game is a real treat. Even if you didn’t, the game is still awesome. I so wish there was a Huntdown 2.
Really fun platformer, challenging, lots of cool 80s cliches. More technical than Expendabros, if you like that you'll like this.
Man, they went hard on the neo-punk look, music, sfx and even the voicelines fit perfectly.
And it's also very easy to get into, perfect for a chill evening.
A beautifully animated platformer that is as brutal in difficulty as it is fun. It isn't Volgar the Viking levels of stupidly difficult, but it can be challenging, especially some of the boss fights where you may find yourself repeating them quite a bit.
The checkpoint system is fair, the guns pack a punch and most importantly, its a fun game harking back to the days of Contra (this is almost as brutal as Contra, but it's the boss fights that elevate it to that level).
Awesome game...Reminds me of Robocop vs Terminator on the Sega Genesis! I bought it on Switch and completed it a couple years ago. 4$ on sale is a steal!
ABSOLUTE BANGER, the pixel arts, the gameplay just pure adrenaline good ol arcade metal slug-like game, I wish we can get more of this!!!!
Its a simple action game that feels really meaty! I like it!
Fun action but you are not invincible so you don't get bored. The music is awesome too. Hoping for Huntdown 2 babyyyy
Reminds me of older contra, great game.
Nice run and gun game. Old school. Can be quite challenging
doesnt work well with controllers, dont get why that isnt the first thing you fix. kept asking for second player and wouldnt stop
Takes me back to old school gaming! this is mint!!!!
Excellent game, still waiting for a sequel 🤘
It's good.
Really a great game.. I loved it!!! Brilliant :-) please make more games like that!!!!!!
I do not know when I purchased this game. Immediately it went into my favorites and into a collection called Platform Action VG. I put it down and did not come back to it for a LONG time. I'm back in and it is fantastic. Hybrid of Combatribes and Contra and many other action games of that era.
You'll know very quickly if Huntdown is the type of game you'll enjoy. The difficulty wastes no time ramping up. When it does, you'll find yourself attempting the same sections over and over. Some people will like that. Others will become frustrated. For me, it fell into the "frustrating" camp.
For a game that demands split-second reaction time, the characters feel oddly sluggish to control. They move at a pace similar to Mega Man or Shovel Knight, yet there are bullets streaking across the screen, explosions, and charging enemies to contend with. A faster, nimbler character would have intensified the action and made the game play more hectic. But Huntdown infuses a Contra-style 2D shooter with cover mechanics instead. While some players may enjoy that, I found the two styles clashed with one another. There's a lot of time spent hiding behind boxes or in dark alcoves, trading fire with enemies. Since enemies take several hits to bring down, these firefights can last a while. A dash move helps speed up the action, but it's still not easy to dodge bullets since ducking can frustratingly lead into a slide that sends you straight into the enemy. Jumping is a little slow and heavy, too, and lacks the springiness of games like Bro Force. And the 16-bit aesthetic, while nice looking, is overdone by indie shooters. It also doesn't make much sense to theme a game around the 1980s and fill it with 1990s graphics.
Overall, I don't think Huntdown does anything particularly remarkable. There are flashier and more exciting games in this category, and the sluggish movement, cover mechanics, and crouch slide are bound to turn some players off. It's probably a solid enough experience for anyone looking for an old-school challenge; but when it comes to high-octane fun, Huntdown falls short of its competitors.
10/10, outstanding in every way possible.
A shining example of what video games can be, and a true modern classic, destined to be immortalized in gaming history by the virtue of it's pure awesomeness.
If you're able to, buy full price - it's well worth it, and the makers of this game fully deserve such patronage.
A lot of love went into their work here, and it most certainly shows.
What an amazing game. Great graphics, soundtrack, gameplay and level design. If you like 2D shooters get this game!
Masterpiece of a game. Devs I noticed in the cinema level you had an 8-bit "the thing" movie poster! I swear this game was made for me <3
This game is kickass. Cool cyberpunk theme, awesome soundtrack and feels like a modern Neo Geo game. I got it on sale for $5 and that feels like a steal for a game this quality. Even not on sale this game is worth it.
lan oyun tl iken almıştım dolarla 13. kafamı sikiyim
This 80s/90s action movie inspired arcade shooter wears it's influences on it's sleeve with pride, on ode to a simpler age where politics were sidelined in favour of fun, and masculinity was still an acceptable quality.
Set in a familiar dystopian future where crime is rampant and law enforcement non-exisent, you play as one of three classic action heroes, delivering you own brand of vigilante justice (which basically involves shooting, stabbing and exploding everything that moves). If you assumed you'd be quipping one-liners like they're going out of fashion as you go, then give yourself a bro-fist.
The pixel graphics are top-quality, with some impressive attention to detail, and although the shooting mechanics seem simple at a glance, there's enough wrinkles here to make for some surprising tactical depth which rewards good planning or quick-thinking.
Tight shooting mechanics really pull this all together with a diverse arsenal of weapons to use, each feeling distinct and appropriately punchy. The combat moves at a brisk pace and can be difficult on higher difficulties, but doesn't feel unfair.
With a good variety of locations, enemies and well-designed bosses to get through (including a couple of genuinely laugh out loud moments), a Warrior-esque syth soundtrack and some excellent combat, Huntdown comes highly recommended. The only real negative is the lack of online coop, but if you're determined to do this, there is always Steam Remote play as a work around.
See you at the party Richter...
I love this game, it reminds me of the NES game Contra. It's a side-scrolling run and gun. A modern game with 90s and early 00s arcade graphics. The game has a good look and feel. Controls are pretty simple with or without a controller. I appreciate that they are customizable, such as the default movement keys are the arrows and through the options menu, I was able to key bind WASD.
At the time I'm writing this, it is on sale for $3.99 and it's well worth the money. It's a lot of fun. I've started on the lowest difficulty so I can learn the mechanics of the game. The boss fights are all unique and engaging. I also like the Blade Runner vibe the game gives off. I can see why it is critically acclaimed. I highly recommend it.
i was always into Indie type, Pixel grapichs, 2D and run and gun games since i was a kid. This game resembled like Contra my favourite game and its even more better than that, the story the mechanics and the game itself i just LOVEEE IT!!
Just give it a try you'll love it...
Thank you for creating such a beautiful game, Words cant describe how happy i am.
great game kill the gooners
insanely enjoyable side scroller
Really enjoyed this, normal was just the right difficulty for a play through to be challenging but doable.
I have played alot of 2D platformers and this one is in my top 5, its one of the GOATS.
10/10 Mastapiece !
