I love this game

Good for dumb fun - a classic - just don't play with limited lives because much of the bosses and certain normal enemies are poorly designed and will lead you to die repeatedly unless you perfectly execute unfun and tedious movement patterns.

Also, PC performance and settings options are really bad.

Don't just literally emulate and launch it on Steam. Why would I pay for that? Put in some effort for crying out loud.

Continuing my Metal Slug marathon, I wasn't even sure if I'd have enough to say about the games individually. As I played through the first four stages of Metal Slug 3, it just felt better in all aspects. What more could I say? Well turns out I could say a lot – but not about any of those. This is a review of Metal Slug 3's final stage – no, gauntlet.

Throughout Metal Slug 3, you very rarely fight actual humans. You tackle mutant crabs, a boss that summons the Ten Commandments of Moses (not a joke), and giant bugs. You don't even see some of these depending on the routes you take, as stages now have different pathways to go down, which is great for replay value. But I digress – clearly something is wrong with the state of the world in Metal Slug 3, and the final stage has you vanquishing the root of all this evil.

This final stage is longer than the rest of the game. In fact, it took me and my friend more time to beat that final stage on limited continues than the whole of Metal Slug 1, 2 and X *combined*. What's a shame is it's actually a pretty cool stage. It has EIGHT completely distinct areas, FIVE bosses, and has a better three act story structure than any of the previous games in totality. But if I had played this as a kid I don't think I ever would have had enough of an allowance to beat the game.

I can understand the desire to one-up yourself in the most insane way possible, but losing upwards of 40 minutes of progress with absolutely no end in sight is a feeling I expect from a roguelike, not a single stage in a goofy run and gunner. The rest of the game is genuinely incredible but if I ever were to replay it I think I would probably stop after stage 4.

These games keep getting better with each entry, they went ALL OUT with that ending!

Grew up playing only the demo for my Xbox 360, so many things like the "heavy machine gun!" and "rocket launcher!" and "okay!" voicelines were just permanently engraved into my brain so I was elated to get the full version here on steam. Game is huge fever dream but nevertheless it's still super fun, but that last mission is frickin brutal lmao. I kept laughing because it was so over the top and just kept going and going and going lol. 10/10 from me you should definitely play this

small edit: I forgot to mention that the soundtrack as well is absolutely phenomenal

Extreme to the max! Gorgeous pixel art and blazingly fast gunplay. Surprisingly charming story telling and development of enemies and environments along the way. Great way to burn and hour in co-op with the homies.

That's the best Arcade game ever. Epic!

Difficult? Yes. 100% Fun? Yes. 100%. Since it is an Arcade game from the 90s it is the textbook definition of high skill ceiling, and haha guess who's gonna have to spend upwards of 20 dollars trying to beat the game if you're a normie like me. Luckily since this is a PC port, I can have fun and suck ass so that one day I can become good at this game. Would recommend, and am waiting on a friend to hopefully one day play these games with me.

Second best Metal Slug available on Steam, behind the original.

What takes away from Metal Slug 3 is the long, tedious and quite frankly boring final mission, which is longer than the rest of the missions combined. If I were you, when doing a casual playthrough, just stop the final mission after you defeat the Hi-Do boss before all the alien garbage occurs.

Port wise, I think it's a decent port

It's metal slug, but I am marking it down for being pretty much a carvon copy of the original.

One of the classic franchises, this game is really fun, it has really good controls, one of the best run and gun games, it has really good looking pixel art, iconic characters, the music is also good, great couch multiplayer game, its way better with friends, also has achievements and a leader board, so you can compete online for the high score.
Not sure if this one is better than MS2, but stil prefer MS1 over this one, by no means is bad, but MS1 is better.

This is the most difficult and interesting Metal Slug game.

Although I can't finish it without unlimited credits, but it is still worth to play.
