The best Western game available especially when you are searching spittoons.
the story is good, the mechanics are good, the gags are pretty good
overall this is a pretty neat little game
comedic RPG about cowboy stickmen. gameplay is simple but fun, with plenty of unique dialogue and interactions (including some that let you bypass encounters). highly recommended!
Fun game. I had played this game from start to end at least 5 times. They force you to choose one pardner and then allow you to choose from there how you want to progress. You can bypass a lot of encounters or find very specific interactions based on your prior decisions. The game is fun and I would say completely worth the price. I enjoyed it and liked Gun Manor as well.
Idk man. The combat is simple and boring, the visuals aren't entertaining, the main selling point is the "comedy" but after 2 hours I found myself just clicking things and not reading any of it because time spent wasn't worth the occasional snort. I know comedy is subjective and I'm sure some folks will think this is a riot but I just don't have it in me to keep going.
i havent went outside for the last week. my family have all left me and i lost my job. really addicting game tho, 11/10
I played a lot of Kingdom of Loathing with my friend growing up, I cannot wait to play more of this in his honor.
Quite possibly the silliest game I've ever played. Great soundtrack and incredibly hilarious dialogue set in a ridiculous setting. Imagine if Earthbound and Oregon Trail had a baby and then they sent the baby to clown college but the baby had a real passion for roleplaying as a cowboy. It's something like that. 10/10
"West of Loathing" is a funny RPG that had me smiling from start to finish. The world is bizarre yet wonderfully unique, and the memorable characters make the experience even better. The game feels like a more cracked version of something like Fallout: New Vegas with more western spaghetti elements thrown in it. The focus mostly on side quests and choices that genuinely impact the outcome on your adventures.
The humor is the heart and soul of this game, it's pretty special. While the main campaign isn’t particularly long, the content packed into the game is more than satisfying. It’s also not grind-heavy (unless you want it to be) and the combat, while simple, gets the job done. In fact, many situations can be resolved without resorting to fighting, which adds a refreshing layer of choice to the gameplay.
The only negative i can think of is that there are some quests or puzzle that's not really explained well on what to do that if you're struggling, there's no shame in looking up a guide for it, one of the big side quest of the game of the game requires an object that you find from a random encounter.
if you're looking for a game to have a good laugh and engage in the weird worldbuilding, I highly recommend it.
great game true its just stick figures but the story and rpg style is fantastic i cant stop playing this game i love it i recommend it if you aing got much to do and want a fun/quick game to play
Alright, I am not going to sugar coat anything here.
The good part is the jokes, exploration and the combat is alright.
The bad part is random encounters while exploring and vague quest reminder from your partner.
These random encounters 50% of the time will be real bs, when I was playing for first 30 minutes I somehow encountered a cow that had 84 hp while I am dealing at maximum 7 damage. Considering that much hp has only when enemy has high stats meaning the enemy can two shot the player. Of course there is ability to surrender to the enemy and that sounds fine except it will still count as losing. In this game it is not possible to die, instead of dying player is transported back to his/her room and new day starts. Sounds pretty normal right? Not really because if you had used some buffs that last for day it all will be consumed. One time I surrendered to an enemy and I could continue journey and rest of times it was loss, i don't get it.
Also, player has no idea what kind of damage will deal these random encounters, is it going to be melee, ranged, poison, fire, spooky or lightning? The bad part about elemental damage is that you only get resistances in mid game while you can encounter snakes that deal fire damage before getting to mid game.
This game does not have quest log per say, instead you must interact with your chosen partner and ask about main quest or side quest, but unfortunately your partner most of the time will give vague description what you must do and it gets confusing.
Enjoyed the mechanics, as well as the funny story and worldbuilding.
Great story line, lots of fun. The minimalist graphics are charming.
It's the only game that has ever advertised itself as having jokes in the game, while actually being able to make me laugh out loud - and even once to tears
Having good gameplay helps too.
simply one of the funniest games I've ever played, simple to learn and yet complex enough to make replays satisfying as you work out different builds
This game is like a spittoon, just reach in and i guarantee you’ll find someone you like
funny walk is the best setting and if you dont play with it on you didnt actually play the game smh my head fr fr
really fun and funny 10/10
really cool game with so many different possibilities and outcomes, with a really unique and fun art style, overall really good game, highly recommend :D
Hats. Spittoons. Cow punching.
one of the most enjoyable games i have ever played ,if you are one of the people who read dialogs that is , which is 100% worth it in this one
Great Game, Great Humor, Great writing! personally love the open world aspects, the simplistic Artstyle, and wacky hijinks!
Came back to this game after 6 years, its so good, one of the best games ive played probably
This game is pretty much the story of the characters I doodled in second grade, 10/10
this game is epic, hilarious and ridiculous all at the same time.
i think that this game is wonderful to just boot up and throw on the tv for your girlfrined to watch. its super funny and the story actually goes somewhere, and the SIDE quests are fun asf
This is the best game I have ever played. It has fantastic storylines, it is funny, and it is super fun to play multiple playthroughs.
Funniest game I've ever played! Also a pretty decent RPG, with interesting things to discover everywhere.
A funny and silly western RPG.
Yes, it's ugly but it doesn't really matter.
I've liked the humor so I've played until the end.
If you like "dad jokes", you'll enjoy it too.
I can talk a cow into granting me unholy power, thats good enough for me.
Great game tat has a fun combat style, silly yet in depth story, and many playstyles. 8/10, great re-playability and all around a fun game to put some ours ito.
Not funny enough for the price unless it's on a heavy sale. The gameplay in between the jokes is lacklustre, which only hurts the whole experience.
> rdr2.
Packed with content. Funny. Can roll around in a spittoon.
9/10
West of Loathing is an absolute gem of a game, blending laugh-out-loud humor, clever RPG mechanics, and a uniquely charming art style into an unforgettable wild west adventure. Developed by Asymmetric, this 2017 indie darling is a spiritual successor to Kingdom of Loathing, offering a single-player experience filled with wit, absurdity, and a surprising amount of depth. From its stick-figure art to its razor-sharp writing, West of Loathing is a game that refuses to take itself seriously — and that’s precisely why it’s so brilliant.
Graphics and Style
At first glance, the stick-figure art might seem simple, but don’t be fooled — West of Loathing is a masterclass in using minimalistic visuals to maximum effect. Every hand-drawn character, quirky animation, and interactive environment oozes charm. The black-and-white aesthetic fits the satirical old-west setting perfectly, giving the game a distinctive look that sets it apart from traditional RPGs.
The art style is bolstered by delightful visual gags, from wacky enemy designs (a literal "spittoon enthusiast"?) to environments packed with humorous details. Exploring this world is a joy because every nook and cranny holds a surprise, a joke, or some bizarre interaction waiting to be uncovered.
Humor and Writing
Humor is the beating heart of West of Loathing, and it excels in every possible way. The writing is sharp, witty, and endlessly creative, packed with absurdist humor, puns, and laugh-out-loud moments. Whether you’re talking to NPCs, solving a quest, or reading item descriptions, there’s always something clever to discover.
The game is unapologetically silly, riffing on Western tropes while injecting a unique blend of absurdity and wordplay. It’s not just the dialogue — the humor extends to the mechanics themselves, like choosing whether to specialize in "bean magic" (a mystical art centered around beans) or melee combat fueled by sheer muscle power.
The optional content is as funny as the main story. Spittoons, for example, are recurring items that tempt you into checking their contents — and each one comes with increasingly disgusting (and hilarious) descriptions if you dare interact with them.
Gameplay and Mechanics
Beneath the humor lies a surprisingly robust RPG system. You’ll choose a character class (Cow Puncher, Bean Slinger, or Snake Oiler), each with its own unique abilities, and embark on a journey to tame the weird west.
Combat is turn-based and deceptively simple, yet satisfying, with strategic options that let you use items, skills, and positioning to gain an edge. You can summon a bean golem, throw dynamite, or even talk your way out of fights altogether. For those less interested in combat, the game allows creative problem-solving and often rewards exploration and lateral thinking.
The game’s puzzles are equally clever, striking a balance between challenge and accessibility. Many of the solutions involve paying close attention to your surroundings or thinking outside the box, making every solved puzzle feel rewarding.
World-Building and Exploration
The world of West of Loathing is packed with weird and wonderful locations, from haunted ghost towns to snake-filled mines and cursed ranches. Each area feels distinct, brimming with charm and packed with secrets to discover. The game rewards curiosity — you’re constantly stumbling upon side quests, hidden treasures, and hilarious encounters that enrich the experience.
The sandbox-like structure lets you roam freely, and the non-linear progression ensures every playthrough feels unique. Replayability is further enhanced by the branching paths and the sheer variety of ways to approach quests.
Sound and Atmosphere
The soundtrack is a delightful mix of Western-inspired tunes with a quirky twist, perfectly complementing the game’s humor and setting. The sparse sound effects — from twanging banjos to the occasional “ka-pow” in combat — add to the charm without overwhelming the minimalist aesthetic.
Drawbacks
While West of Loathing is an incredible experience, its simplicity may not appeal to everyone. The stick-figure art, while charming, could deter players who prefer visually complex games. Similarly, the combat system, while fun, isn’t particularly deep and might feel repetitive over time. However, these are minor gripes in an otherwise outstanding game.
Conclusion
West of Loathing is a triumph of creativity, proving that games don’t need flashy graphics or sprawling budgets to deliver an unforgettable experience. Its humor, charm, and clever design make it a standout RPG that offers something truly unique in the genre. Whether you’re wrangling snakes, outsmarting goblins, or just admiring the absurdity of it all, every moment is a delight.
For fans of comedic games, RPGs, or anyone who loves a good laugh, West of Loathing is an absolute must-play. It’s not just a game; it’s a hilarious, endearing adventure that sticks with you long after the credits roll.
Rating: 9/10
Hilarious game, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone who suffers from dyslexia.
Pros: It is funny if you enjoy blunt, in-your-face, and slapstick humor, the characters are witty and the game's lore is adequate. The game is absurdly cheap so even if you don't like it you haven't lost much if you lose the refund window
Cons: Combat is not very dynamic or difficult if you don't use the hard mode hat(which can't be taken off if you change your mind)
Conclusion: buy it if you love the aforementioned comedy and don't buy it if you're searching for an enriching turn-based strategy game
15 hours felt like 50, in the best way possible. Just play it
This is one of the more enjoyable games I have played. It's silly with the way the descriptions go, so if your looking for something Different, this is it. I watched a Utube on it and found it fun. The sound track is nice too. I found the game when Gamer friend recommended it to me.
Upfront, I want to let you know that I will be reviewing the game only on the game's merits itself and not anyone associated with the game or their personal lives. If you choose to not purchase based on the developer or external influences, that is your choice. My review is based solely on the game as an independent entity and solely on it's content.
If you are an old fan of Kingdom of Loathing, then you will find this a great tribute to that game with nice callbacks. But it does have it's own uniqueness as well with the satirical take on the old west. There can be some repetition to the game in places, but if you are being honest, what games of these types do not, it is just part of what gives these games charm, and goes back to it's KoL origins.
In all I found it enjoyable, although I do wish it had better repeatability and more "go off the beaten trail" areas and secrets. It does seem "on-rails" at times and you can only progress down a specific path. The devs should have taken more aspects of KoL into account and given the game a far greater explore-able area, non-linear progression paths, and more things to discover outside the main story line. In all I can endorse this game at the $10.99 price point or lower, you will get your money's worth. But I wish the devs would expand on the game more and add some additional DLCs beyond the one it has, with more story or areas to explore, otherwise it is good for one, maybe two play throughs, then you are done.
Hilarious game with surprisingly interesting game play and story line.
this is a amazingly silly stupid wonderful bundle of joy, 10\10 would pay double to play again for the first time
it is a good game PLAY NOW
every spitoon you see is a opportunity to get good stuff, ignore how absolutely disgusting they are, ignore it completely, loot is loot.
10/10

West Of Loathing is incredible. It's a great game that both holds your hand and helps you learn how to play but also just kicks you straight into the chaos of The Cows, The Cults, The Demon Clowns, etc. 10/10
One of my favorites and most certainly the funniest RPG, maybe even game I own, period.
West of Loathing is a game of plenty, but not density, and that’s said as a compliment. It’s like a hearty three course meal, the perfect proportions of everything from the starter to dessert (even more with the DLC which scales to you). As someone that makes things, I can tell much fun was had when designing this game in its abilities, scenarios, and oh so wonderful writing, and that infectious fun is felt throughout every scratchy line in West of Loathing’s quadruple A graphics.
But comedic writing I feel wouldn’t carry this game alone if the mechanics and story behind didn’t vary some weight, and weighty they are.
WoL is a deceptively strategic game, everything from stats to your choice of horse goes into factoring your encounters and fights. Combat isn’t the only way to win, but when it is it can really push your thinkin’ skills… assuming you don’t power level, naturally. Something the game does not punish you for which is appreciated for runs where one just wants to get in and get out. But that is the point, you have choices in both mechanics and the story, more than many games that boast that as a core feature allow. It’s a freedom long felt lost in modern game design.
The stories especially so. None of them in particular are winning any awards, but together they are more than the sum of their parts. A balance of quality and quantity that you get to pick through and find out how they end, or you can bring to a conclusion yourself (knowingly or unknowingly, in some cases.) I don’t want to spoil any, but I have to encourage those that play to open their mind. Chances are if you hear about a thread of something, you will be able to interact with it and uncover details you’d never think of.
It is an RPG I can’t recommend enough to anyone. It’s beginner friendly (not family friendly, I should clarify) and will make for a great read and ride through this strange take on the Wild West.
Hilarious dark satire on video games and the western film genre. The humor is well balanced and doesn't get too stupid with the silly moments. Fantastic adventure RPG set to a gorgeous soundtrack.
7/10 farts into a stinky canteen - needs more challenging combat
