Description
A multiplayer survival game of parenting and civilization building. Get born to another player as your mother. Live an entire life in one hour. Have babies of your own in the form of other players. Leave a legacy for the next generation as you help to rebuild civilization from scratch.
Hey folks, I'm Jason Rohrer, and I've been working on One Hour One Life for more than three years. I've been doing everything myself---I drew all the graphics on paper with pens and markers, I coded the entire engine from scratch, I composed and performed all of the music, and I even made all of the sound effects. It's a very personal game, and it's really unlike anything else that's out there. It's also a huge game---over 1300 fully interactive, craftable objects already. And it's only getting bigger, with weekly updates adding new things all the time. The game was initially released on my own website in February of 2018, and over the intervening months, I released 29 updates off-Steam. I've promised to keep releasing weekly update for at least the next two years, with the end goal of making the largest, most comprehensive crafting game in history.
Okay, so what about the game itself?
First of all, you only live for an hour, where each minute marks a passing year. You join the game server as a newborn baby, and some other randomly-chosen player is your mother. You depend on her for your survival. And why will she be willing to waste her valuable time and resources to keep you alive? Because she's going to die in an hour just like everyone else, and if she wants what she accomplishes in her lifetime to have any meaning, then the next generation (aka, you) is her only hope. And if you survive into adulthood, you may get the chance to have babies of your own---other players, just joining the server---and those babies will be the next generation that gives meaning to your own life accomplishments.
Across this ever-growing family tree of generations, players are collectively conducting an enormous project: they are rebuilding civilization from scratch. The online game world starts out as a near-infinite expanse of wilderness (four billion meters wide from east to west, and four billion meters wide from north to south, with a total surface area of over 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 square meters, or 36,000 times bigger than Earth). The very first player to join the server is Eve, and she starts out in the wilderness as the root of the family tree. Eve and her immediate offspring lay the foundation for the future civilization, perhaps making a few primitive tools, cooking basic foods, and starting a small farm as they scrape out a meager existence before dying. Future generations will build on this primitive foundation, eventually mastering more and more advanced technology, including domesticated animals, metal working, permanent buildings, and transportation networks.
But as real-life history has shown, civilization is fragile. A generation that is born into the lap of luxury---on the backs of their ancestors' hard-won accomplishments---can just as easily squander their inheritance as build upon it. Key resources run out over time, so careful management, planning, and organization are necessary to prevent an inevitable collapse. Thus, the game graduates from the individual challenge of primitive survival in the early stages to a group organizational and leadership challenge in the later stages. How do rules and procedures for group survival propagate across multiple generations? What did our great grandparents have in mind for this village?
The main mode in the game involves being born as a helpless baby to another player as your mother, but you can also play with your friends as twins, triplets, or quadruplets. One baby is hard enough to take care of---any mother that can successfully take care of quadruplets deserves the eternal gratitude of you and your friends.
All of this is happening on my own centrally-managed, persistent servers, and your purchase includes a lifetime account on these official servers. After you buy the game, you can instantly connect to this world with no configuration or server set-up. It all just works. You also get access to the full source code, including the server code. Technically-minded folks can run their own private servers, or even use the powerful content editor to make their own mods.
I hope you'll join us as this sprawling civilization-building experiment continues to unfold. Many thousands of players have already collectively lived over 400,000 hours in this endlessly-changing world so far. Before the Steam release, the average playtime for each player was 17 hours, with dozens of players logging over 500 hours each, and 94% positive off-Steam player reviews. This is a deep and rich game already, and there are still hundreds of content updates to come.
No two lives are ever the same, and a new story always awaits on the other side of the [GET REBORN] button.

Game does not work on Windows 10, waste of money.
One of the most unique games i've ever played... It creates amazing and unforgettable stories. I didnt expect to cry while playing this... It has a huge learning curve and an amazing community who is willing to help any new player
Awesome game! such a fun concept and leads to some great interactions and funny stories.
not only after 5 minutes of playing did i want to kill myself in game it made me want to do it irl as well buying this game is basically tying the noose already "so grow some balls and just do it"- shia labeouf
This game is so fun but its the most tearful game ever you get born first life then you have a nice mom then you have to watch her die and say the saddest last words anyone ever heard like why would you say that overall this game relies on teamwork and social connections so yeah try it out if you want to.
The premise is good and my kid loves this game, however I've had to ban weekend gameplay for my kid becuase you get the people who like to go on redrum rampages and ruin it for others. I tell myself this is life learning, as people are awful at times in real life as well. Otherwise it's good typing practice and good practice for assessing the situation and acting accordingly to aid the development of your colony.
If you've blocked someone for previously acting like a psychopath (redrum rampage) there shouldn't be the possibility for you to end up spawning in the same location again. Devs please revise this. My kid ended up in the same town as a knife-wielding idiot that had already been previously blocked by my kid. The idiot took out a lot of other players again and my kid never should have had to contend with this person after having already blocked them.
Very nice community.
Got no fucking idea how to play this game, but my gf loves this game... so this game gets my recommendation.
Born into the 'Pie' family.
Mother taught me how to make pies from an early age.
Mother died, I carried on her legacy of making pies.
My twin sister became the leader. Together we raised children.
I taught my son how to make pies; he died young.
I had 3 daughters, I taught them how to make pies.
Lived a great life with my tribe, making pies.
I got old, my daughters held a pre-funeral for me as we said our goodbyes.
10/10 gaming experience, the community is awesome. The only downside is.. you make friends, then may never see them again once your time is up.
Lovely game, just checking my hours. :)
I was playing within the two hour return period and decided to go as far away as I could with the remaining time.
With 15 minutes to go, I popped out a kid, told him he was screwed, and carried him as far as I could. When I was almost at the 2-hour mark, I gave the kid all I had and told him to be brave. I then popped out a second kid in the middle of nowhere (Shit), and had to tell the three-year-old to take care of his brother. XD
I'm not sure if I should return this game now. (Good luck "Scout" and unnamed child).
was born inside of a tattoo shop
my family was dedicated to tattooing
i learnt how to tattoo
they taught me how to play
they died
i carried the legacy on
i gave birth to a child
i taught him how to tattoo
i died and we held a funeral for me
10/10 amazing experience
Fun game, isn't too overwhelming to new players.
sometimes when i read the notes people leave at graves i cry
pretty cool, wish I was able to start civilizations more often
The dev is arrogant and it shows as the development continues. His egotrip on making video games (All of which besides this were a flop) prevents him from taking any suggestions or criticism that would improve what used to be a unique and fun experience.
I don't see this changing anytime soon, so buyer beware.
This game is a really fun concept but in pratice it's pretty janky and hard to play. The controls are very hard to understand and it makes the whole thing very frustrating
this is why you dont make games too complciated
This game is what kept me alive during my darkest times, the community is awesome and friendly, just give the game a try. Even if you don't like it, it's always refundable!
As a new player, I do not recommend people to try this game. I will write what impressed me and what makes me, unfortunately, leave, even though, I love the game.
I'll start with the positive:
1) The idea of the game;
It is simple and brilliant at the same time, get used to the fact that in this game everything you did can be in vain, or the contribution is so insignificant that it is not visible. It's a bittersweet feeling.
2) Drawing style and voice acting;
It has caught my eye instantly, I respect the developer's work, everything looks like it was drawn by hand, and this takes a lot of time and effort.
3) Nice part of the community;
Thanks to all the good people who taught me and gave me tips, for all the sweet and funny conversations. These moments have a special place in my heart.
Now to the cons. I will describe only why I do not advise you to play:
1) Griefers;
This is the main reason. Oh yeah, these rats are everywhere. This game has a mechanic for killing other players, I don't understand why it's there at all, the developer could have easily removed it and the game would not have changed. Griefers always have an advantage, because it's impossible to defend against an attack. Imagine a situation, an apocalypse has happened (more on that below), all the progress of the entire server has been erased (they justify this by saying that they want to clean up lags, but in fact it lags just as much as before the server was cleaned). You need to manage slowly building a city and not starve to death, I chose the role of a cook, I try to figure out how to feed everyone, and then 2 rats come and just kill everyone. Sounds fun, right? Rip Celeste family. There is a curse system, but it does not solve the griefer problem, not at all. Everything you did before is absolutely in vain. I am against games that always give an advantage to such people. And mind you, for a second, it's a game about building and developing a civilization.
2) Apocalypse aka server cleaning;
I don't even know what to say here. Players have the option to make a chain of actions to start the apocalypse, it seems to take a lot of time. I saw cars here, and what tiny percentage is there that I'll be lucky enough to end up in a developed city and make my own car? With such purges, I have 0 chances. I can still come to terms with the fact that everything will have to be built anew, if not for griefers.
This is my subjective opinion. Of course, it's up to you to decide whether to try this game or not, but at least you can get acquainted with all the pros and cons beforehand.
as a new player i am very happy with this games community. i read a review for this game clamining that there was people with multipul acunts ruining everything but i can confidently say that everyone i have met in this game is a human. the being born to a mother mechanic means your mother who is a player will usaly offer to teach you game mechanics so when i had children in the game i got to pass down my farming knlodge then my child who was also a new player had 3 children one of wich went around with a knife. i was growing old and i gave the hat my mother gave me to my daughter for her to pass down to the next generation and then i died and by pure chance when i cliked the get reborn button i was reborn to her daughter in the same colany and i eventualy was able to communicate to her that i was her mother. and then her sone murdered someone. that was just one experance in this gem of a game. overall its the players in the game that truely define it. i have yet to meet a toxic player. probably because it takes time to get stuff done in this game unless you work with the colany so everyone seems to just contribute if you steal stuff you cant really do anything with your loot so its just more fun to improve the colany. you can lern mechanics from other players rather then the wiki and overal the game mechanics feel like they were desinged to be taught to you by other players rather then a tutorial or wiki. honestly this game is such a unique one.
i have never played this why is it letting me review??? i would like it if i got it for free tho please
I enjoy the communal gaming aspect where you can only contribute in a limited means to a bigger "project".
first time playing got a very advanced village the people there were so nice. I learned to make pies. Mother died but came back as a kid. We just kept talking to each other. After a while the village got smaller till my second round playing I was the last survivor in the village. I died next to my family's graves. I then got reborn and one on my family's body's was in this new village. I spent my whole life that time looking for my old village. I couldn't find it.
The Rain family were so kind! 10/10 will definitely reborn again!
its fun
good
i really like the social aspect of the game, people are very friendly and helpful. the role play is nice also. i think railroads between villages would be a nice touch. overall great game.
With my 308.8 hours on record, this review has been a long time coming, 7.49 USD is a steal for such a wholesome game! Even if you play it once and you are done, you will make your own story along with your family, but if you come back wither you had a bad experience or an awesome one you are going to keep making really neat experiences in this game! Bring your own roleplay into the game to spice up your life or even joke about the weather irl! (Just don't be too edgy, REMEMBER WHOLESOME! This game is the very definition of being human, you will meet the kindest of souls and the darkest of demons here ((Theres plenty of OTHER games for your dark humor (((not this one))) Just know if you come to this wholesome game with ill intentions (Griefing, racism, or just being super edgy you will be sent to donkey town and it takes 70 years to rejoin society again) so drop your spare change and join one the most wholesome game communities on steam! Also, if you ARE gonna grief why not start the apocalypse event? (YES THIS IS A THING YOU CAN DO YOU CAN START AN APOCALYPSE AND END ALL CIVILIZATIONS!) One last and final piece of advice, beware the 1st of April you fools!!! ;D
great game.
Got sent to donkey town for griefing
refund, boring asf i have to be taken care of for a while and it just gets repetitive
good game (too lazy to write a review)
god i really wish he added the atomic powered robots
its verey good, im still not very good but i have fun polaying, i would recommend this
EVERYONE IS NICE FOR NO REASON
its worth it if you are a good roleplayer and if you like grinding and leaving marks on your world. if you are that type of person then this is for you
fun but make sure to not go to neighbor tribes worst mistake of my life
gets updated a lot, very cool to progress through generations and also give birth to your mother
An amazing concept, executed with love.
There's more to it than what meets you at first sight, because, well, doing anything within an hour is a real challenge, so you end up reincarnating over and over, each time contributing a little, which is a different way of playing from other similar games. This also makes it impossible to achieve anything without cooperation and coordination with others. This gives way to some philosophical contemplation, if you ask me.
As in other games of this type, recipes for making things necessary for survival, or required to advance the plot, can get really complicated. A [reference](https://onetech.info/) is essential, something that I hadn't known about in my first couple of rounds, because I simply didn't expect the depth of the game.
I also like [the way](https://onehouronelife.com/newsPage.php?postID=10980) the [next game](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2787060/Another_Hour_Another_Planet/) is being developed, with anchors in the first.
As a young teen, for years I've dreamed of an online/survival/family based game. I would map out various ideas on paper. First, it would be a survival game where the player would be born to another player. Then, the user would have to find food by hunting or farming to survive. During the game play, there were a plethora of options, such as building a family (which were other players), making friends (other players of course!), finding wilderness areas to call home, crafting new stuff, and so on. There were no games that succeeded in matching my expectations. Several years later, I stumbled across "One Hour One Life." I was shocked. It was everything I've ever wanted. It was the game I've dreamed of for years! In only a few hours, I made the purchase with my hard-earned money. In only a few hours, I already have a lot of well-cherished memories from the unique game play and diverse stories the community has created.
It was worth every cent. Thank you for creating the game I've always dreamed of.
Always new things to do and learn
overwhelmed by the amount of crafting recipes while trying to play the tutorial
already filled with frustration i do not know if there was a search function for recipes but would reconsider playing again if one is introduced or exists
Very cool game. Great idea and artstyle.
really great game with a lot of love put into it, it should have many more players than it does
Amazing game, if you like civilisation life sim game. 10/10 🏙️👍
It's a fun game but it's confusing at times.
You create your own entertainment in this game. If you are not creative and goal driven this game isn't for you cause nothing exciting is gonna happen unless you make it happen.
this has quickly become one of my favorites. i think you can only describe it as a story builder, and you can really come up with pretty much any idea you want. even more if you get some mods.
Really wholesome community so far. I really like it!
Emergent game play at its best
