Most of the DLCs aren't worth the price (IMHO) but the base game is definitely worth the price and the time for anyone who likes management sims like Evil Genius, Rimworld, Oxygen Not Included, etc etc.
Played this game a lot. 300+ hrs. Well done.
2025 review. To this day, they still don't have a priority system or task denial system which tells you ALL you need to know about the quality of game to expect, had it for years, never fixed. They have a skill system in place which utilises books and items to no effect really as it is all left to chance who ends up doing what. You have a super jacked carpenter? Too bad your 0 skill miner is on the bench. Could he be mining? 100% yes, Could he be hauling? 100% yes. But no, he is on the carpentry bench while your actualy carpenter is out chopping a tree or fishing lol
Everything else from there is just decorative in a game like this, core mechanics failed there.
Important note: I used to play this game on the ipad.
My review is for ppl that used to play it back on mobile (when it was available) and are wondering if its worth picking it up again here on steam.
If you liked the game back then on mobile, def give it a go here!
especially on a sale. I was at first hesitant and not sure if I would like it due to different controls etc. but it's honestly a lot easier on PC. I breezed through all the levels very easily, also the new ones I didn't know.
The heroes from the DLC can be very helpful. espec the insane fire guy. he can clean mob waves rly good. just be aware that one of the items he needs to be crafted, is a silver ore! If u unlock him early in the store make sure to also grab one of these if u dont have one.
I like the fact that each lvl/map forces u to tackle things differently. if u stick to a fix formula/routine - u will have a hard time. figure out how the specific world functions and adapt. I rly like this aspect!
Having played the game on mobile first, will have teached u how to deal with pathfinding and dwarfs sometimes being stupid. I did not have any issues with that aspect at all.
In terms of DLCs if u start fresh on PC coming from mobile - here is my opinion:
I recommend getting these DLCs before u start a new campaign/fresh full playthrough
Heroes -> worth it. helps a lot! to get money easy and fast: fishing and then deconstruct the old boots u get from it.
Bosses & Monsters -> adds big/extra bosses to the existing maps. I rly enjoyed this one!
Abandoned Mines -> adds to the existing maps. it's free. get it!
Sisters in Arms -> this one also existed on mobile. I rly like the pets and the female dwarfs. especially the pets can be useful to keep the rats and nightly monsters at bay.
Maybe:
Grottoes -> nice to have, but not a must imo. get it on sale. adds to the existing maps
For later once u are done with the normal maps:
Heart of Evil -> new world/campaign // From all the new worlds I liked this one the least.
Lonely Mountain -> new world/campaign // I rly enjoyed this one! u have to tackle the map very differently. very nice challenging.
Temples of 4 Elements -> new world/campaign // I also rly enjoyed this one. Some of the fights can be quite tough. Be prepared.
DLCs not listed here, I have not tried.
Craft The World
Nice game with loads to do with the dwarfs collect resource to craft weapons , tools and build a home
fight some dangerous creatures
explore the world to find treasure
control your dwarf to do different tasks
I love this game, because you can create a great castle and you don't need to complete quests to get positives emoj in this game.
An upjumped facebook game. This in NO WAY has similarities with Dungeon Keeper outside of AI minions doing your bidding. That's it. It's more akin to Terraria where you have no real control over what order things get done in.
Overall, if you can pick this game up for a few dollars, it might be worth it but I highly doubt you'll get more than 100 hours out of it before being bored out of your mind.
The biggest crime this game commits is simply put: tediousness. Your dwarves are not very smart. They do things in weird orders, don't do things efficiently, and overall are just really, REALLY stupid. Mods can help this a little bit but unless you REALLY want a version of Terraria where you have less control, don't get this game.
game is very fun and dwarfs are very sexy
Nice game, graphics etc, but path finding is a killer, gave them several years to fix it before giving negative review, but its still not fixed despite many dlc. so its a NO from me.
This is a cracking little game. I've had it in my library for years but only recently gone back to it and tried to work out how to play. 48 hours in at time of review and I've not even looked at the DLC yet, even though there's a load of it, as the game is something like 10 years old now.
The real beauty of this game is that you can sandbox it, or just work through the campaign, learning how to play, at your own pace.
I'm not even off the first world yet. I know how to do it but I've just chosen not to, as yet.
i like seeing them work its fun
Clearly this game is popular with the mobile game crowd because it's a mobile game at heart with it's overly simplified UI, leveling up system and giant buttons (for touch screens).
So if you're looking for a Dwarf Fortress, Rimworld, Terraria style mix this game is not any of those. In fact I know of no 2D side-scroller game that does what Dwarf Fortress does for base-building and mining underground. (If you can suggest one I'm open.)
Nevertheless, that's not to say this game doesn't have any charm because it does but know what you're getting.
I'd only recommend this game for less than $4.
The game is very fun and easy to play its also a very chill and relaxing game to play, that is why I recommend this game.
Mindless crafting game. Simple enough to not feel like you're building for the generations. Adorable wee people.
There is a major game breaking (WHO AM I?) bug that prevents dwarves to use skill books (YES I HAVE TRIED THE LANGUAGES THING).
i hope the deves fix this. when they do i will change the review.
Yup. Over a decade since release, and content still being released!
Tbh this game is so underated.. I can recommend this to any gamers! Small n Big, Friends N Foes!
I'm really glad they added handles in the game after years of regular development. I LOVE HANDLES!
Fun diversion, great for a one day play session. I found the original game (a bit too) challenging at normal levels, so very much appreciated being able to use the game editor to edit cargo parameters, minimize buggy creatures that ruin gameplay (i.e. the worm), tweak some equipment attributes to make more sense, etc.
No Azerty support! lazy developpers
One of the best games that i have played on the steam platform so far!! I really enjoy the hcallenges and the total control that i have to create and build.
easy to learn Fun some complexity
could be a good game but when you run it in the background whilst watching you tube etc says a lot.
The Dwarves AI is a joke, the pathfinding is a joke. Most of the time the Dwarves stand around with a sign above their heads saying they cannot find a way to their destination.
Build railways and they Walk!!.
Dont waste your money.
Very confusing that you have to pay to get real multiplayer...
Fun little crafting game
A game of sweet and sour. [this review is based on 300 hours of the base game only]
Pros: Looks pretty
Lots of things to craft
Fun if you enjoy making custom bases
Pretty easy to figure out
Cons: Clunky combat
Extremely inefficient dwarf behavior
Craft the World is a cutesy base builder/mining/crafting game with periodic combat against enemy waves. You start each level with a single dwarf armed with a stone knife and a dandy set of clothes. Chop down trees and plants for wood and food. Mine for dirt, stone, and ores along with various other objects. Progress through a crafting tree by making items. Build your base as a tower or castle reaching to the sky, or sprawling across the map. Excavate a survival bunker and expand it to be a warren of rooms and halls with only a hatch on the surface to indicate your home. Prepare food for your dwarves and build beds for them to recooperate.
Combat is very basic, with brawlers, archers, and wizards offering melee, ranged, and multi-target ranged damage. Your base will be attacked from one side or later both sides every so often by a wave of monsters. You can target enemies for your dwarves to attack, tell them to stay inside their house and fight from the doorway, and cast spells such as fireball. Most monsters will be stopped by the outer doors (or hatch) on your structure and will have to attack and destroy it to gain access to your base. Generally you'll have your dwarves remain inside to fight at the doorway because they take incredibly reduced damage if they aren't outside in the open.
The downside here is that the dwarves have an absolutely HORRENDOUS time fighting when the terrain isn't completely level. If they're trying to fight on terrain that looks more like stairs, they'll spend the bulk of their time jumping around like imbeciles and taking hits than gutting their foes. They also have a tendency to fall off of ledges and ladders when fighting on them.
Most of the game will be spent digging, crafting, and building your base. Unfortunately the dwarf AI behavior is lousy. It will divvy up work to dwarves more or less evenly, which often times leads to a dwarf mining one block, then standing around instead of mining the other nearby blocks because another dwarf halfway across the map has "claimed" it. This can be worked around by taking manual control of a dwarf and building more complex things. Trying to build a long bridge of blocks can take a long time if you rely solely on the AI to do it, but with manual control you can click to mine, click to build, and move forward to complete the job much, MUCH faster. (also you can build/install things without having to run back to the stockpile at the base to grab those things)
Craft the World is a mixed bag of good ideas and poor execution. If you like base builders, and can get it for ten bucks or less, it's probably a reasonable purchase. If you want better pawn AI and better control of pawn work priorities, you'll probably be better off with something like Rimworld.
Apparently i bought this at some point and then refunded it.
i dont remember so ill give it a thumbs up.
Play 9 hours, quit the game, return in 6 months. I found the game in 2020 and still haven't gotten bored.
It's a really fun game, but campaign is annoying. Feels unplayable/manageable in campaign mode. Going to tinker with sandbox mode, well, because I am a drama free kind of guy if I can help it. :3
Likes:
-Sleek UI, and you feel rewarded the more you progress.
-Village management.
-Lots more management. Fun.
-Multiple levels to choose from. (I bought all dlc, and base game on the winter sale.)
-Some things get a little wonky with AI, but a lot of it is corrected with work around in game. Such as a dwarf getting stuck in the air. You can control the dwarf to get them unstuck.
-Feels like a great town management 2d civilization builder.
Don't likes:
-Seems the more you build the bigger the enemy zerg which voids out defenses.
-Rats are annoying. They spawn way to much.
-Dwarfs are always hungry despite having food and tables available.
- I really am depressed about the campaign is being so lame, and achievements seem to be locked behind it.
-I kinda wish we could go in better detail about each dwarf needs. Dwarfs feel disposable as the way campaign is set up. Would be nice if we could keep our original villagers for a long play through.
-Thanks, and that is all I have for now. Get it on sale. I don't think you will be disappointed!
Very nostalgic game
A fun base building, exploring, mining and fighting off hordes of monsters game.
relaxing and fun
this game is prettyy fun for a good bit, its the game i look back at my past and be like "man that was fun ima play that for a bit
Well, a 2d game with gathering, fighting and whatnot. However, all the "tutorial" says is that you're supposed to build a base, somehow, put a totem, no info about materials for this "totem" or where to put it whatsoever. Then waves of monsters come every other day flooding you - on level 1 - before you even get to start your base. Dwarves can dig and get all kinds of random materials you don't apparently need for anything, then at one point all of 'em sleep and you wait around for whatever to happen and that was it. If it's really that good as other reviews say, they should possibly work on the tutorial because it's just a major pia for beginners -.-
This game is very fun. You start with a dwarf and build, dig, explore and defend to level up. I have to admit I did have my favourites. I was a very cutesy game that you can easily find yourself lost in for hours at a time. I would recommend.
It has dwarves and they can dig!
Great game. Very chill, and I love the level of detail in the visuals and crafting.
I bought this right after it came out. Since then they have continued to support the game and have added a lot of content. For me it's fun and low key.
Nope. Looks too much like a mobile game.
I paid $5 for it and am seriously considering a refund, its that bad.
Controls suck, controlling dwarfs are a pain, combat is ?? terrible... Jumping is horrible, cannot climb walls that they can auto climb, no idea how to do most things and no simple help with the basics. So much DLC that apparently they didnt put all the useful gameplay in the base game. Not fun with the 20 minutes I could stomach. No wonder I never bothered with it for the last 10 years.... ffs this is supposed to be a popular game?
10 DLC's released in 10 years.
0 bugs fixed in 10 years.
Looks funny, but has a very poor learning curve (which might actually be interesting). For me, it's a big nope because basically no multiscreen support. I wasn't able to run it properly so refunding.
Great game, great graphics infinitely replayable. Lots to do! Very relaxing, or challenging depending upon what you choose to do. Highly recommend!
Good mining game!
Just an over all Great Game!
Just need to say firstly there are no WASD movement options. I'm marking this game as a no just for my own personal record, but if you're someone who does like those types of games then I do recommend it. It seems like a fleshed out game that has content and the graphics aren't bad either but for me its just not my cup o' tea, unless they added features I mention below.
Its basically a colony and city simulation where you tell villagers what to do and they go do it.. I didn't expect that. I was expecting something similar to Terraria or Starbound.
So if you're looking for something similar to those games, this isn't really the game to get. If you like games where you can just point and click and little people go do it, then this is the game for you! Have fun. It's just not for me because no WASD movement and freedom to move with your own character.
If the game had the option that allows you to control a singular character and then have NPC villagers to help you build, I wouldn't mind that and I would actually love a 2D game like that, but this is not that.
Gameplay Mechanics: 7/10
Narrative: 4/10
Graphics: 7/10
Sound and Music: 7/10
Replayability: 8/10
Innovation: 8/10
To be honest, Craft the World was a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect much from a small indie game, but it turned out to be surprisingly entertaining. Combining sandbox building, crafting, and strategy with charming visuals, it offers a unique and addictive experience for those looking to explore, build, and manage their way through procedurally generated worlds.
The gameplay mechanics are enjoyable but come with a few quirks. Managing a group of dwarves as they mine, build, craft, and fight is engaging, and the depth of the crafting system keeps things interesting. However, the AI can be frustrating, with dwarves sometimes ignoring commands or getting stuck on simple tasks. Combat is basic, but the tower defense mechanics during monster attacks add some much-needed tension. While fun, the rough edges hold gameplay to a 7/10.
Narrative is minimal, as the game focuses heavily on its sandbox elements. There’s no real story beyond progressing through the tech tree, surviving waves of enemies, and building your perfect dwarven base. For its lack of structured storytelling, narrative scores a 4/10.
Graphically, Craft the World delivers a charming 2D art style with colorful environments and lively animations. While not visually groundbreaking, the whimsical aesthetic suits the tone of the game well. Graphics earn a solid 7/10.
The sound and music are fitting, with cheerful background tracks and satisfying sound effects for mining, crafting, and combat. While the music can feel repetitive during long sessions, it does its job well, earning a 7/10.
Replayability is a strong point. With procedurally generated worlds, multiple biomes, and a deep tech tree to explore, every playthrough feels different. Building unique bases and experimenting with strategies keeps the game fresh, earning replayability an 8/10.
Innovation is notable in Craft the World's successful blend of genres. By combining elements of sandbox building, resource management, and tower defense, it offers a unique twist on familiar mechanics. While some systems feel rough around the edges, its creative approach earns innovation a strong 8/10.
In summary, Craft the World may not have the polish of larger titles, but it’s a surprisingly fun and entertaining game that punches above its weight. For a small indie game, it’s a pleasant surprise that delivers an enjoyable mix of crafting, building, and strategy, making it a great choice for fans of sandbox and management games.
it's a laid back, fun game. Lots of DLC, load of mods, you can really tweak this game and customize it to your preference. Great sandbox type game. Play how you want, build how you want.
It's an absolute time sponge.
Loved this game. Once you get the hang of it, which isn't hard, very addicting game play loop.
Great fun
