very fun sandbox game really, not much else to say but i do wish they added different kinds of enemies
I quite like this game, just waiting for chapter 2 though.
I love that you can build all sorts of insane stuff from flying houses to jet fighters and some of the mods people have created are the definition of incredible. Considering how little staff axolot has, they have done an awesome job.
This was also the first steam game I ever purchased
thanks axolot for making such a good game!
Scrap Mechanic is one of those games that doesn’t exactly wow you, but it doesn’t make you want to throw your PC out the window either. It’s just... okay. It’s not bad, it’s not great. It’s somewhere in the middle, and depending on what you’re into, that might be enough.
The core concept of the game is solid—build, create, and explore. You get dropped into this open world where you can build all kinds of crazy machines, vehicles, and contraptions. Sounds like a blast, right? And it can be. But the more you play, the more you realize that there’s not a whole lot here to really keep you hooked for long stretches.
The building mechanics are... fine. You can slap together whatever you want, and for a while, it’s cool to see what you can create. You can build cars, robots, planes—hell, even crazy contraptions that barely make sense. But the novelty wears off after a bit, especially when you realize how repetitive it can get. The game doesn’t really offer a lot of direction. Sure, you can just go out and explore, but without a lot of goals or real challenges, it becomes more about tinkering than actually accomplishing something meaningful.
Graphically, the game has a cutesy, blocky aesthetic that’s fine but not particularly eye-catching. It’s not ugly by any means, but it’s also not something that’s going to blow you away either. It’s functional—nothing more, nothing less.
As for performance, it’s mostly fine. There are occasional hiccups and bugs, but nothing catastrophic. The game runs pretty well, but it doesn’t have the smoothest performance in every area. When you start building bigger, more complex machines, the framerate can drop a bit, which can be frustrating, but it’s not a dealbreaker.
The multiplayer aspect is a nice touch if you want to mess around with friends, but again, it doesn’t really do anything mind-blowing. You can team up to build and explore, but the lack of significant objectives makes it more about just... existing together in the same space rather than working toward anything meaningful.
At the end of the day, Scrap Mechanic is a game that’s fun for a few hours, maybe a few sessions, but after a while, you’ll find yourself asking, “Is this it?” It doesn’t quite reach its full potential, but it doesn’t actively disappoint either. It’s just... okay.
Final Verdict: 6/10 — A fun sandbox game with some cool ideas, but it lacks the depth and variety to keep you fully invested for long periods. If you’re looking for a casual, creative outlet, it’ll do the job, but don’t expect to be blown away.
This game is more fun than you might think. You can build whatever you want... and you get to murder bots! waiting for chapter 2 in 2038 :D

Very Fun Game. I build treehouse with elevator cant wait to set on fire next update! Would recommend to people who like destruction and people who like cats! You can build cat. meow
I understand that some people like this game and that's fine this just was not my type of game. It has a couple of small bugs but that is not the problem with it, this game feels like it's trying to be Raft and Minecraft at the same time. The combat is dull and is just you running for your life like your playing FNaF SB if you dont have a weapon, and if you do it's spamming the same thing until you die or it dies. The only positive thing I can say about this game is that you can build some cool stuff. If you buy this game get it with a close friend and play a sandbox game so your in a vacuum with the only good part(s) of the game. This game is buy no means bad I just didn't like most of it.
FINAL RATING: 2/5
It is a very fun sandbox game, even better with friends. However it can and will be buggy, hopefully the next chapter update will be good.
I love this game but the developers have seemingly disappeared.
(No updates on their X/Twitter, and their website has been out of date since 2017)
You shouldn't expect the game to change from it's current state.
The modding community is what keeps the game alive.
**Verdict**
If you want a quirky creative sandbox with lots of love from the modding community, give it a try.
Otherwise, it's not worth your money.
Review is targeted at Survival.
I want to love this game, I put so much effort into loving this game.
It has so many good pieces, but they are just not assembled in a way that's fun. The component farming mechanism for progression is a pain, the world size is a pain, if you happen to lose your cockpit far from home you're wrecked. Survival sometimes feels like an afterthought to add a feature that was highly requested, but didn't quite make it there. The worst part is its _almost there_.
I lost my vehicle twice far, far from home by getting randomly sniped in the cockpit by a bot. Then had to manually walk all the way back to my main base to craft replacements and all the way back. I wrote off my saved game both times and decided to give it another go, but ultimately it killed my enjoyment.
If I were the devs looking to drastically improve survival I would consider the following:
- Replace components with a leveling system, let players unlock things in a blueprint tree one by one instead of farming components non-stop. Its the same method (kill to get progress) but makes non-component dropping bots feel better, and also makes the defense feel more important. You could keep components as a drop to limit access to crafting certain things, but as the raw upgrade/progression they're so rare.
- The required jump to obtain a Spud Gun from no gun is drastic, and the fact that enemies require it at a certain phase without any warning except they will repeatedly snipe you is super unfun and feels terrible. I am punished for exploring the world and seeing a cool thing then going over there to find the same loot but with insanely harder enemies guarding it. Nothing is as fun as losing your vehicle to a robot you've never seen before just chopping it in half or sniping you out of it without a second thought.
- Biomes are "neat" but ultimately feel really hollow. There doesn't feel like any progress in getting to them, why wouldn't I just stay in the lower tiers and farm components? Ember and Chemicals are about the only other thing out there and both are close to home.
🛠️ Scrap Mechanic – The ADHD Tinkerer Simulator
Rating: 9/10 bolts lost in tall grass
If you’ve ever woken up and thought, “I want to build a toaster on wheels that shoots chickens”, then Scrap Mechanic is the game for you. A place where the laws of physics are more like loose suggestions and your only real limit is how many screws you can find... and how much sanity you’re willing to sacrifice.
🔧 Story? Who needs that?!
Okay sure, there’s technically a story – you’re a mechanic who crash-lands on a planet full of angry farming robots and… that’s basically it. But let’s be real, no one plays this game for the plot. It’s like buying a cactus for the fruit.
🧠 Logic? LMAO.
I built a car. It had four wheels. All of them spun in different directions. Don’t ask me how – I don’t even know. The end result looked like a malfunctioning office chair possessed by a demon. But it moved! Kinda.
🤖 Robot AI
The robots are like toddlers hopped up on sugar and rage – they sprint, scream, and wreck whatever you spent the last 4 hours building. It’s like the game whispers: “Oh, you made something nice? Here's three feral carrots with wrenches. Good luck.”
👥 Multiplayer – aka “Should that be on fire?”
Playing with friends is a blast… until someone decides to turn your tractor into a mobile grill with a chicken cannon. Suddenly your peaceful farm explodes every 5 minutes and physics feels more like a loose interpretation than a rule.
⏳ Updates – aka “Just wait until you forget you were waiting”
The game is insanely addictive – you sit down for 30 minutes and wake up 6 hours later surrounded by pistons, wires, and deep philosophical questions like: “Can I make a banana-shaped battle tank?”
BUT – fair warning: updates are slower than a sloth on vacation. The devs are working hard on the full release, which is great… but at this point, it might come out around the same time as Half-Life 3.
Thankfully, the modding community is a gift from the scrap gods and keeps things spicy.
Final Verdict: Scrap Mechanic is beautiful chaos. A game where you can be a genius, a maniac, an engineer, and a total failure – sometimes all at once. If you like building stuff, solving problems in the dumbest possible way, and shouting “IT'S WORKING!” as your creation explodes... this is your new home.
Recommended for anyone who ever built something out of LEGO and thought: “Now what if this had a lawnmower engine…”
🛠️ Scrap Mechanic – Symulator Szalonego Majstra z ADHD
A kto to potrzebuje?!
No, prawie...
To jakby gra mówiła: "O, zrobiłeś coś pięknego? Oto trzy wściekłe marchewy na nogach z kluczami francuskimi. Powodzenia!"
Podsumowanie: Scrap Mechanic to cudowny chaos. To gra, w której możesz być geniuszem, wariatem, inżynierem i kompletnym nieudacznikiem – czasem jednocześnie. Jeżeli lubisz majsterkowanie, śrubki, i absolutny brak zdrowego rozsądku – to Twój nowy dom.
Polecam każdemu, kto kiedyś zbudował coś z LEGO i pomyślał: "A gdyby to jeszcze miało silnik od kombajnu..."
Great game, too bad the updates are few and far betweeen, this game deserves all the love, truly a classic
The fact that this game is nearly 9 years old and still in Early Access (and for good reason, it is NOT a finished game) is pretty sad. The good news is what's currently in the game is really fun, and they're definitely still working on it (at a pretty slow pace) and have been working on polishing the mechanics already there rather than adding new content, which is a good play to make, but maybe not for 9 years.
It gives me a chance of building my own vehicles in this game. Don't care if my creations are ugly but I tried to be a pro builder tbh.
Despite many people going as far as labeling the game abandonware, it has generally over 1000 players average. That should tell you what you need to know.
The developers are still working on the game, although their communication with the community has been limited. Looking forward to the future.
This is a great game. Highly recommend it to all those creative people out there
Good game, but a little bit basic. With mods it can be a outstanding game. Hopfully the base game will get improvements in the future.
9 years and we still don't have Chapter 2. But you sure pushed out Raft super fast...
And Creative Mode only updates?.
Seriously thinking of dropping this game.

Scrap Mechanic is interesting to me because the game changes completely once you get yourself a gun. It can be a bit scary(great fun though) running around with your starting hammer, When I get tired of one game, a new world is seconds away and the maps are all different. Also, really like building MY ideas into solutions to the game challenges. I really enjoy when my family joins me in-game too. Frustrating part, game is in development with no end in sight. Dev's keep teasing the next version, but I've stopped holding my breath. Plenty of fun to be had with the current release!!
Axolot please finish your gammeeeee :'(
Anyways, this game is definitely one of the sandbox games ever(to me at least.) Fun physics, you can build literally anything, survival is fun. My only con is that updates aren't often. Like it actually takes forever(at least right now as of writing.)
I'd recommend getting this game while it's on sale, it's not worth it to buy the game at full price as of March 2025. Hopefully, hopefully, that changes soon.
Best survival/creative game I've ever played :D
Let your imagination run WILD!
This games is great. You can make almost what ever you want. A few downsides are that the game receives updates rarely, survival mode can be a bit of a grind and a lot of building items are not able to be crafted by the player.
This is the best game for survival games, the things you can do is insain. I would highly recomend
realy fun game, they new physics are great and and things i have made are cool. but i nevaer played it that much
Been watching scrap mechanic content since the game came out but just started playing recently, real nice game especially for those that wanna express your creativity, survival may need some reworked and improvement but everything else is perfect 10/10.
Scrap Mechanic is one of those games where you can have an absolute blast, but at the same time, you can’t help but laugh at how ridiculously fun and sometimes downright silly it can be. It's a sandbox game that lets you build anything you can imagine, from cars and machines to crazy contraptions that defy logic. The game’s charm lies in the freedom it offers; you’re not bound by any rules other than your own imagination.
Whether you're crafting a simple car to get around or trying to build a fully functioning robot, the possibilities are endless. And let’s be honest: there’s something about watching your creations go completely wrong or malfunction in the most absurd way that makes the game even more entertaining. It’s one of those games where you’ll find yourself chuckling at your own failures and loving every minute of it.
While Scrap Mechanic can definitely be chaotic and a bit dumb at times (in the best way possible), that’s also what makes it so enjoyable. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to have some fun, get creative, and not take things too seriously. The physics can lead to some hilarious moments, and you never know what you’ll come up with next, making it a game you can always return to for some light-hearted fun.
super addicting game to just drone off playing and some learning in the wiring mechanics is even possible
>game where you can build anything
>build anything with suspension and bearings
>floats
nations rise and fall in the time it takes the devs to launch another half baked update
purchased 2017 back when they cared at least a little
Interesting Game, but still waiting on major elements from dev team. Add more missions, mobs, and features of world to explore. A story mode would be good.
Honestly a little disappointed, This isn't a Single player game, its for playing with your friends, (I don't have any that play, I want a single player). Requires constant reading of the wiki to beat opponents, difficult to Farm for resources because robot waves will appear to destroy your Farm and they get stronger based on Food value and how much you plant. Grinding for resources is difficult, the Amazing and incredible works are inspiring, but Definitely a Late Game feature.
they tyrna bring back a game that was poplar in 2016 they are trying better a game that was poplar 9 YEARS AGO
hey Devs we can see that you are updating the games behind the scenes and and us player would love to see some of what you guys are working on. :)
its a fun base building game and you can play with friends
I want to like it.
I find the lack of direction frustrating, after the first two objectives the game just leaves you guessing where do i go, what am i supposed to being doing is there a point. The crafting and building is ok, the combat is stale. Im six hours in and it feels like a waste of time.
Let me begin by saying that I love this game. Survival mode it fun, but it gets stale after a while. No story or objectives really. Devs have been promising Chapter two for YEARS now. They no longer keep us up to date on whats going on or why there have been numerous delays. They claim to still be working on it, but i have given up hope.
Good game but brain dead developers.
+Hey what should we add in to our survival game!!!
-I think we should add some block types for our creative mode.
+Thats fantasic idea. No one should play our survival mode it is garbage and we should make it even worse.
really creative game! it is different from the other survival games! it has its own vibe
this game is very fun and very underated i know i dont have many hours on it but i have been watching youtube on scrap for about 7 years and i can say god damm its came a far way i would definitly recommend this game
''Wanna scrap'' he said outside Tesco. ''No I do not fam'' said the mechanic as he walks out holding his meal deal. ''You dont leave me any choice'' said the roadman hungrily as he attempts to steal the mechanics meal deal. The mechanic then pull out his spud gun and shoots the roadman 5 times in the head. ''Dont mess with the mechanic and the mechanic wont mess with you'' said the mechanic pulling his pants back up.
Infrequent updates, half finished with no roadmap... and it had so much promise.
Great sandbox game. Floppy ahh physics and slow updates though, better with mods.
okay game but it was abandoned, no updates and too many bugs and too little content
great fun, the challenge stages are great for getting you familiar with the game mechanics and enjoyable too!
fun game to play, especially survival. Even if the game gets boring you can always download a mod or do challanges so that you dont get bored. The game is known for having bugs but that just makes the game even more fun to play. you should always be ready for crazy stuff happening.
very fun game, you can literally create anything, its like Minecraft but 10x better.
very fun, but very limited without mods and can be confusing at first
survival was a let down
