If Freedom Planet was like a better 16-bit version of classic Genesis titles like Sonic, Rocket Knight, and Ristar then Freedom Planet 2 is like an even better version of the 32-bit Saturn games they never had.
The three main playable characters from the first game return along with a fourth protagonist playable for the first time. Lilac having hair whip attacks a long ranged dodge move and a special attack that can either launch her forward or forward and up or down while bouncing off any surface she comes into contact with. Carol has fast attacks, can wall jump, has the Sonic styles rolling attack, a throwable disk weapon that she can teleport to, and the ability to find her motorcycle that she can either ride or store to access later. Milla has slower physical attacks but has a shield that can deflect enemy projectiles that also allow for a ranged attack, a jump you can hold that has her slowly gaining more height, and can call in blocks that follow her that can be shot for a powerful piercing ranged attack or fired quickly behind or below her for some added speed or height on a jump. Neera has a slower but longer ranged spear attack that can also fire ranged strikes when stationary, a dodge that also activates a focus mode that makes her attack faster, her spear thrusts can add to her forward momentum and launch her forward in mid air, and her special ability gives her various ice powered moves like freezing a hit target or making a whirlpool around her to hit near or aerial targets. Despite their differences in playstyle, each of the four playable characters can build up a fast speed that remains controllable thanks to the combination of view space, tight controls, the dodge move that gives brief invulnerability frames, and a lack of instant kill traps and death pits that you would constantly find in the Sonic games. You have to choose a character at the start of the game and play through entirely as them, you can make 10 different save files but this was still disappointing as you would need to acquire any items or side content again for each playthrough. Each character does get some unique cutscenes or lines when they run into some stage bosses and conversations inside of a stage might change as well depending on who you are controlling.
The stages themselves offer a lot of variety with many having their own kind of unique elements to them being the enemy types, unique objects to interact with, or even moments where you briefly control a giant robot or where the game becomes a shoot em up as you take control of a ship. Before going into a level you can equip up to two items and create a potion bottle by filling it five times with the same or different potion types to increase different passive effects, many of these will make you stronger in different ways while equipping nothing or items with penalties can improve your score. The items bring a bit more possible variety on top of what the different characters already add to the game.
The graphics have been improved and the character animations and stage backgrounds have a lot of detail and personality, even for more minor animations like hitting a bumper at a fast speed and having a short period where your character might be running backwards with a unique animation before turning around or Carol still managing to climb on ropes while on her motorcycle but now clearly straining from the effort.
On the normal difficult I found the game to be pretty easy, I never lost all my life stock in a stage forcing me to restart it. When you die you can use one of your lives to either start at your last checkpoint or to respawn in the same spot with only one of your seven life points intact. I played on normal, setting it to hard or equipping no items or items with penalties to get a higher stage ranking would make the game more difficult for people looking for a challenge, and for people looking for even less of a challenge there is an easy mode and a variety of assist options that can be turned on.
With the large number and wide variety of stages with both good level design and detailed environments, responsive controls, a decent story, and variety with the four playable characters and equipable items and potions this is easily one of the better action platformers I've played and the best that has a focus on speed and/or perfecting stage speed runs. The first game was good enough that no one should have cared about getting a new 2D Sonic game with Freedom Planet out and this sequel improves on the first in every way.

the most comically underrated game. outta all underrated games. seriously how the fuck does this only have like 10 concurrent players max. this is peak
Very cool brawler/platformer hybrid with great characters, beautiful visuals, lots of animations, excellent music (some of the best in the genre) and tons of variety. I really recommend it!
Its pretty good but the levels begin to get way too long and the bosses annoying. But in terms of movement mechanics and going fast its really great. There's lots of replay value here too. I'm not a fan of the guard mechanic but the game doesn't absolutely rely on it. As for the writing, it makes me nauseous. But that's the standard for Freedom Planet. Pretty strong game overall.
amazing gameplay, fun characters, nice graphics, and banger music! the devs put so much care into this game and it shows.
If you enjoyed the first one, this is right up your alley. Maybe. I remember one person saying they didn't like the new guard mechanic. The story is engaging, the graphics are colorful, and the controls are fluid.
While it makes improvements from the original game, I'm still not of a fan of the combat. Thankfully pretty much every enemy can be skipped aside from bosses, but I do wish this game franchise would pick a lane and figure out if it wants to be classic Sonic, or if it wants to be Strider. Personally I wish it would just be Sonic, because that is where it shines.
Pure peak at every moment.
It made me cry, not because the story was sad, but because I felt so proud of the developers. I don't know how to describe it in any other way.
It is not often that I play a game to 100% completion, especially when that means perfecting it. Playing through it multiple times with every character, earning the best rank in every stage, beating every par time, grinding to complete collections, let alone in nearly one extensive sitting without breaking to play something else.
Freedom Planet 2 was one of those rare cases.
I came to it hot off the heels of the first after purchasing both on a sale with some steam cards I got for my birthday earlier this year, I knew nothing about it going in, but had previously played through the first several years ago on Wii U, proceeding to not touch it again due to what I will refer to as "Younger me skill issue." I got my ass beat, I'm not afraid to admit, but I managed to persevere to the end. Flash forward to this year, and I still had some struggles, but got through all the same. After enjoying the first, I was more than ready to hop into it's sequel, excited to see what it had in store.
That was back in September, and I now have almost 200 hours clocked into it, sitting pretty on a 100% save file as Lilac with all 63 achievements to my name, and yet still I don't quite feel like I'm through with it, I might very well return another time to take a swing at hard mode, just so I can play more of it, even with nothing else to accomplish, and everything done.
I speak with utmost sincerity when I say that Freedom Planet 2 is one of the crowning jewels of indie gaming: From it's stunning pixel art, to its fun characters, humorous yet compelling writing, wonderful voice-acting, high-octane action, and fantastic soundtrack, all wrapped up in a gripping narrative of war and deceit, with the very world itself once again on the line. This series truly has evolved beyond it's humble roots as a Sonic fangame and into something entirely it's own. The jump in quality between the original Freedom Planet (Still a good game in it's own right, mind you) and it's sequel is astronomical, and nothing short of magnificent.
If you enjoy tearing through gorgeous scenery at mach one as cute but tough monster girls, obliterating all that stands in your way for the good of the world while rocking out to a varied and always remarkable soundtrack that always fits the current mood, and you don't mind a bit of a darker tone in your stories, pick this game up as soon as you can. You'll be supporting an incredible team of developers and in return getting an outstanding example of what happens when a passion project comes to life, without any interference from pesky due-dates or corporate meddling, lord knows the people behind it deserve recognition.
I'll be eagerly awaiting the third entry from announcement to release, if it comes.
Give me the soundtrack already!
Loved the first game, and I love this game
This game has some great hits on the soundtrack
Sash Lilac
Not as good as the first, but pretty decent fun I guess.
tight controls, interesting story, dialog is meh at times, but overall lots of fun with a gradual increase in difficulty that pays off. only completed lilacs characters arc most the way so far and i will be playing the rest.
UPDATE:
Completed first run through. Awesome story. I have to agree with the others talking about the game, the "true ending" boss fight with syntax, robots way over powered, not difficult to get their pattern, but really over powered for speed, health, and that teeny tiny hit box.
But that final cut scene you unlock... damnit it makes all the awkward character writing just not matter. Who cares if the characters need mood stabilizers so they stop acting like an abused cat from a room full of rocking chairs when there's a story arch like that occurring... unsure if I will collect all 13 time capsules on my next play thru's... that final boss is really powerful.
peak platforming, ive played celeste so i know what peak platforming looks like
One of my favorite 2D platformers
Fantastic game. If you played the first Freedom Planet and enjoyed it you'll definitely like this one. Gameplay-wise I find that there's been an improvement across the board. The movement is sick, the levels are fun, and the soundtrack is sweet. As far as the story goes I found it alright, but granted I've only played Lilac's route.
But yeah, if you like sonic or kirby games I would definitely give this and the first game a shot.
Honestly, this is kind of a hot take, but I think the only reason this game series didn't get more attention is mainly due to being perceived as "furry" on the outside, but trust me is pretty good. But yeah, this sequel is amazing, it does distance itself a lot from being a 'Sonic fangame' even if the first game had already lots of influence from other Sega Genesis/Megadrive vidya.
This game pushes a bit more the beat'em'up feel, adding even a dodge button, and slowing just a tiny bit the gameplay sometimes. Speaking of it, many stages are way larger, sometimes levels not being as straightforward as in the first game, but I think this is actually a right step (one of many) in comparison to the first game, giving room for more complex elements and enemies.
Overall this game has so much more content and the OST is amazing even if you'll miss a couple of the iconic songs from FP1. You're likely to finish your first playthrough in around 15-20 hours or so (including beating every level, battle-sphere, boss rematch, etc... but not 100% completion) and it does not feel draggy at all. If you played the first game, basically you'll be missing our lil' alien guy, Torque, and a continuation to the previous villain's whereabouts, which (spoilers from FP2) has a high chance of being subject of a continuation in a third game, since Brevon appears as an Hologram in a secret ending , but to be honest, I think they did good with changing the subject of an otherwise predictable sequel, and giving us in exchange a pretty deep story and lore about almost anything that was rather unanswered in the first game and tons of new characters, including a new antagonist.
TLDR; buy it, it's sooo worth and I love this game, there are very minor caveats but nothing is really stopping the fun.
I pirated the original game on my Wii U. I liked it a lot so I pirated this one when it came to Switch earlier this year. I loved this game so much that I knew I had to come back and buy both Freedom Planet 1 and 2 to show my support. These games are absolutely amazing and will not disappoint in pretty much any way. The music, the sprite work, the characters, all great, especially here in the sequel which blows the first game (which was already good) out of the water in my opinion. The combat is especially good here as well, giving a nice twist to the "Sonic" formula. All of the foes are formidable but never seem extremely difficult and are fun to take down, was was a slight issue I had with the first game (although it could have been a skill issue then. I should probably replay it to compare). The quality of the content and the amount of replay-ability here with the multiple characters with their own side-stories and extra challenges is insanely high for the low price they are asking for. If GalaxyTrail ever makes a Freedom Planet 3, rather than pirate it I will be their first customer because these devs and this franchise absolutely deserve it.
Also, if GalaxyTrail reads this, would you consider possibly restocking the Merga and Lilac plushies? I love goofy plushies like that and would love to buy them from you guys.
Very good sequel to a very good game. Gameplay, music and characters are great, although I think the first game is more iconic and memorable in those regards. Hopefully we get a third game someday, the ending seemed to imply it was possible.
IT'S THE BEST GAME SEQUEL!!!!!!!!!!! they will be better than the first part (which came out 10 YEARS AGO!!!!!!!!!)
I already thought the first game was good, but this sequel raises the bar in every category. For anyone who likes the old 2-D Sonic games, it's a 100% recommendation.
Story sucks, main villain is awful.
It's an improvement over the first game on every other front, and i love this game to bits.
Thank you for existing, Freedom Planet.
Carol is my waifu.
Lilac goes to the Home of Sexual, and suffers microaggressions.
12/12 fun for the whole family
The first Freedom Planet was such a good game but this game is a huge glow-up, characters being fleshed out more, amazing art from Tyson Tan, and a great story that builds upon the first I highly recommend this game.
Fun Game
(As of writing this I have only beaten the game as Lilac.) Freedom Planet 2 is more than just a game for me, it was an EXPERIENCE. This game is a prime example for how to create a sequel that's even bigger and better than the original. From the core gameplay tweaks, the level design bursting with really fun and creative gimmicks, more balanced bosses, the more appealing and improved character designs, the improved combat thanks to the new abilities and the guard move, and the gorgeous spritework--some of the best I've ever seen in a videogame--there is a lot to love about this game. It really says something about the game’s quality when I’d even consider the weaker stages to still be good at the first least. Combined with the items and the ranking system on top of that, you have a game that’s endlessly replayable. But the aspect that has seen by far the largest jump in quality in my opinion is the story and the overall writing. I'd say that the story is really good--great even this time around, thanks to the improved presentation, very likable characters (with Lilac being one of my new favorite characters of all time), great voice acting, tighter writing, fairly high stakes, really funny humor, and better cutscene pacing to name a few things. Merga especially runs circles around Brevon from FP1 when it comes to being the main villain due to how compelling her backstory and motivations were, and how the story explored her relations with Lilac seeing as both of them are the last known water dragons. The overall tone is much more consistent as well, as while the game has its fair share of comedy, it knows when to slow things down when it has its more serious moments, compared to the first game which had some serious tonal whiplash issues. The game even did a fairly good job at tackling more serious themes, such as the effects of colonialism, mass genocide, and historical revisionism to name a few. As for some other aspects, I even really liked the addition of hub worlds as a nice break between the main action stages and the NPCs as well! They also do a great job when it comes to the worldbuilding of Avalice, and how it makes the world feel properly lived in. When it comes to the soundtrack: while FP1 might have arguably higher highs, I still think FP2 has a really awesome soundtrack in its own right, and I really appreciate the wide variety of musical styles. Overall, Freedom Planet 2 is not only one of the best 2D platformers out there, but it's also one of my new favorite games of all time while probably being one of if not my favorite indie game of all time. 10/10, this game is absolutely worth picking up if you're a fan of 2D platformers and women. You don't need to play the first game in order to enjoy the second, but I'd still recommended playing it as it's still a great game in its own right, and it makes it easier to appreciate the changes 2 made. Definitely looking forward to doing future playthroughs with the other 3 characters at some point.
I like dragon girl
It's been a long time since I played 1, but 2 feels like more of the same. But that's a really good thing. There are some additions to the gameplay in the form of items and potions, which are cool. Like the first, this game does an amazing job scratching that classic Sonic itch that we haven't been able to touch since Mania.
yes
buy the first game too
rerelease the merga plush (need)
and uh buy freedom planet 3 when that comes out
Extremely good platformer. Great controls, fun level designs, gorgeous sprite work, surprisingly good story. Superior to the first Freedom Planet in every way, and I already thought Freedom Planet 1 was good. Get this game if you like momentum platformers. Dont bother waiting for a sale, it has a lot of content and is well worth full price.
cool
This game is awesome and expands on basically everything from Freedom Planet 1 and doesn't hold back on novelties. It is SO choice. If you have the means, I HIGHLY recommend picking it up.
...Mint.
It's good game
I cannot recommend this game enough, I feel guilty buying this on sale, I would happily pay double the base price for this game, that's how much I enjoyed my first playthrough. If your a fan of classic sonic the hedgehog, tight 2D platformers and challenging gameplay, you will absolutely love this game. The art quality was also massively improved from the original which is a high bar as the original was gorgeous, same with the music. I'm eager to see what these developers are making next and I hope there will be a sequel to this game as I love the characters and gameplay.
