I don't know how it was possible to make this fully-fleshed-out of a game. LOTS of puzzles- they unlock portions of your brain you didn't know were there, but never get you too stuck. A lot of GENIUS game design went into the crafting and interweaving of each mechanic- each very thoroughly explored. Seriously this game is such a masterpiece.
CrossCode feels like A Link to the Past but they dialed up the puzzle to 11, and then some. The dungeons are hard, frustratingly so. Faj'ro Temple I'm looking at you. Heck, even the transition areas (trails) are filled with platforming puzzles that took me hours on end just to find a path.
Combat is.. fun? It's a lot of mouse-clicking and aiming. You get four elements to toy with, each with their different fun power ups. Even the basic neutral element has some good power ups. The enemies are less fun somehow. Many of the dungeon enemies need you to try different combinations (elements, even positions) to find their "weak spot" so to speak, otherwise you'll be doing miniscule damage (especially true for bosses). Still, figuring those out it part of the fun I guess?
Exposition is a bit on the long winded side. Early on you might get overwhelmed with the amount of information they throw at you and/or all the side quests you get. Even the menu was confusing at first. But you get used to it.
Anyways, if you like a combination of (really hard) puzzles and (somewhat repetitive) combat, go get this game.
I really didn't enjoy the controls, expecting me to do precision movements with this system is just silly.
I gave it a good try, but there are some negatives that are killing it for me and I'm not getting hooked the way other players are.
Good:
- Puzzle design
- Pixel animation quality
- Boss encounters
- Player upgrades
Bad:
- Motion sickness (unusual for me)
- Fiddly keyboard and mouse controls
- Pixel art causing invisible elevation or paths
- Grinding quest chains
- Repetitive music loops
Pros
puzzle inside the dungeon is very good.
nice pixel art.
the main character is cute.
Cons
In open map, long distance back tracking, tedious to find a path climb up.
Every map is a maze.
the combat is ok, i guess.
CrossCode is so much fun. I loved the combat, the puzzles, and the story. If you want a meaty RPG that doesn't require any grinding (if you're willing to do the side quests) then I cannot recommend this game enough.
The game does have some issues, mainly in the final chapter. I also did not like how many achievements required a massive grind even after entirely beating the game. These things definitely hurt my momentum, which is why I'm going to take a break before playing the DLC.
Still, I think CrossCode is about 97% of the way to a perfect game experience.
Very good story, great sound track and nice art. That makes it a 10/10 for me.
Probably the best solo game I've played in a while. Combat is great, puzzles can be a little grindy, but overall I had a blast exploring and discovering things. Only thing I might be sad about is the lack of pvp, which was my favorite mechanic.
The game does it's job well, i loved the characters and the combat is actually wuite enjoyable, although if you're looking to play this game, keep in mind that one of the requisites is to have an geometry PhD, brain juice is REQUIRED
Excellent soundtrack, beautiful world, really cool story, janky as fuck combat.
An excellent action-puzzle game. Great art design and exploration, and good characters. An absolute steal for the price.
One caveat: I do experience some motion sickness with the way the camera shifts when aiming. I got used to this over time, but it never completely went away
Well, it certainly took a while, but I finally finished CrossCode.
When starting it, I never thought it would be this grandiose. Crosscode is a gigantic game, stuffed to the brim with content, that is in my opinion, both a blessing and a curse.
First, let's start with the good. Which is QUITE A LOT:
The Story... It's incredible! While it feels light-hearted at first, it touches some deep existential themes and will leave you thinking quite a few times. The way the story is told is very consistent, all the main characters are well written, have great visual designs, their dialogues are consistent, and it's fun to see their development as the story goes on, but they never lose sight of who they really are... As cynical as this sounds for this game.
It plays great, it has good, precise movement, awesome combat, and great interactivity. The combat is just exceptional, it has those elements, long range, short range, and the special arts are just pure insanity (especially level 3). The enemies and bosses are usually great, some aren't (more on that later), but most of the bosses felt beatable and fair, even though HARD AF.
CrossWorld oozes charm, the world of the game has several different regions that look and feel awesome to explore, and that aligned with the awesome graphics, incredible pixel art, and a great soundtrack, makes the experience one level above other games of the genre. All maps are fun, feels metroidvania-ish, but it's not really that. The cities are well designed and nice to explore too. It's supreme!
Some mixed feelings:
Well, Crosscode is not an easy game, it's clear from the deep combat and powerful enemies that Radical Fish expected you to suffer a little, and it's fine. There are a few things I don't like, like enemies that fly or go below the ground, those can be boring to beat, but there's always an easy way to kill those. It's a fair combat, some bosses are brutally punishing, but nothing is unfair or has issues with telegraphy. Also, it's pretty rare to get hit out-of-screen, but it can happen sometimes.
As for the bad:
The puzzles, oh boy... You need to have a huge brain to beat CrossCode without help from guides or something. Even some chests require you to have a degree in 4D chess to obtain. And hard puzzles are not a problem, I like puzzles! BUT, like I said, CrossCode has CONTENT, it's a huge game, and yea these hard puzzles everywhere and at all times can get very frustrating and annoying.
The dungeons are immense, some with over 1 hour long, filled with pixel-precision puzzles and unique powerful enemies. Yea, these get annoying too, especially in that part where there are 3 dungeons in a row. I don't like when my open-world game restricts me into a dungeon for that long.
Now, my biggest gripe with this game is the controls. Seriously, I HATE the controls. It feels subpar on kb/m, and it also feels subpar on gamepads. You need to be precise, but the melee combat in the keyboard is just HORRENDOUS, you need to keep the cursor above Lea while using the direction in the board to attack in that direction. Why not use M1 for Melee and M2 for Ranged? I just don't get it, and you can't rebind mouse buttons too. I had to keep switching between gamepad and kb/m, so it was gamepad for combat and kb/m for puzzles and menu navigation.
Conclusion:
In the end, CrossCode took me around 60 hours to beat (save time), which is quite a lot. In Steam, I have logged almost 93 hours, but that's mostly because I got tired of the game on some occasions and went to watch a video or do something else with the game open. Honestly, I feel like it overstays its welcome a little, but it is not that the game is filled with filler, it's just too much to do and discover. The DLC has a good change of pace, so it gets better. The DLC dungeon is by far the absolute best of the game (more on that in the DLC review). Overall, I think CrossCode is one of the best indies around. While it has its flaws, the good parts are just too damn good. I love and cherish this kind of game, with true creativity that pushes the boundaries forward.
With all that said, Alabaster Dawn is most likely a buy-on-sight situation.
Can't believe I missed this game's existence for the past 6 years. Easily the best old school RPG I've played in ages. Beats Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes by miles. If you like action-based combat (incredible), exploration, and Zelda-style dungeons/puzzle solving, you'll love this game. Don't sleep on it, you won't regret it.
This game combines the high-speed addictiveness of some mobile brawling games with a really unique and enngaging storyline. At the pace at which it delivers its content (battles and puzzles), I am surprised at how long the main story lasts and how big the dungeons are. I'm halfway done and up until now, the game has kept me entranced continuously. Movement and combat are super fun, and everything is just very polished - although its a different universe, it feels a lot like a 2D Zelda game on steroids to me, and I am loving every second of it. Big surprise hit for me - and clear recommendation, even after all these years.
9/10 Beautiful pixel art, amazing story and characters, great gameplay, what's not to love? This should be considered one of the best indie games ever, with Undertale and Omori and such.
An incredible mix of addictive combat, A LOT of very interesting puzzles and a great story. CrossCode has it all, it is a hidden gem, 10/10 game.
There is a huge amount of puzzles, secrets and quests. The puzzles are somewhat hard, tho they were very fun brain-teasers and there were only a few I had to look up.
Most games aren't both heavy puzzle solver and combat and this game does an amazing job combining them. The combat is fluid, you have a skill tree where you can, at any time and at no cost, switch between what some abilities do.
If you want a great action indie game with tons of bosses, play Crosscode.
If you want an RPG with a great story and characters, play Crosscode.
If you care about amazing pixel art and music, play Crosscode.
If you want something that's up there in terms of quality and polish with indie titans like Hades, Hollow Knight, and Slay the Spire, play Crosscode.
If you want a game that gives you a ton of high quality content for how little it costs, play Crosscode.
If you've ever enjoyed playing MMOs with friends, play Crosscode.
If you've always wondered what it's like to play MMOs with friends, play Crosscode.
If you've ever wondered if it's possible to make a well written silent protagonist, play Crosscode.
PLAY. CROSSCODE.
Amazing RPG, great puzzles, shockingly HUGE amount of content.
After finishing the story (A New Home included) im left with 1 thing, as of writing this, this game takes the spot for my current favorite game of all time. The art style, music, characters, gameplay, story, everything is perfectly packaged into this 20$ game, i feel bad for even buying this on sale.
The game feels refreshing amidst the other RPG's, it throws a lot of features at you right at the start which might be a lot for everyone but it does it so well. All the intricate details about the combat and puzzles are explained great and the game lets you get used to all of it by the time you are faced with tougher challenges, and puzzles.
Now for the puzzles, either you love them or hate them. Personally if you are looking for only action driven RPG without much of the bus stops that puzzles in this game are, then i would suggest to pass up this game, for me i absolutely loved them. I was never a guy who enjoyed puzzles in games but this game changed my mind, the more you progress through the game the more elements you unlock for combat reasons, but they are not only used brilliantly for combat, they are integral part of solving puzzles in so many different ways aswell, sometimes i appreciated them more than the actual combat.
Characters are all written, not perfectly, but in a way that not a SINGLE one of them feel like a side fodder ready to just be used for plot reasons and become forgotten as soon as they fulfill their purpose, all of them have their quirks and character and feel like actual real players of the game and it makes you like them and care about them. The protagonist, Lea, is one of my favorite ones aswell, i've never had expected that a protagonist who can't speak would be the one to show the most emotional connection between herself and the others she gets to know along.
Music in this game is absolutely gorgeous, thank you Deniz Akbulut, it always hits the right spot in every single moment, be it the hectic combat or the bop that is the Faj'ro temple while you are running around shooting at the bubbles, or the more dramatic moments in the story, it just hits different.
Combat is very intricate, there are decent amount of mechanics you need to keep in mind when going into fights, like elemental resistances, what type of build you want to roll with. There are a lot of modifiers which can dictate what kind of playstyle you want to go for, do you want to max out your close range melee mashing damage, or maybe spec into guard type of playstyle where you try to parry most of attack, maybe max out your focus (my favorite) and let your high crits and your constant barrage of attack arts demolish your foes, you can pretty much customize the way you combat however you want and it is amazing. Each element has a certain focus like ice being more defensive and shock being very quick and big damage but that still doesn’t invalidate them in other segments of the combat. Apart from monster slaying you will do, there will be couple PVP (against other character players) battles which in my opinion are the peak of the combat in Crosscode and there you can truly test your skills since they can also use all the tricks you can aswell.
TLDR: Amazing game, amazing soundtrack, amazing characters, very good story and i adore it, try it if you have the time :)
Immaculate game. Fell in love with the story and is my favorite game because of it. The combat kept me engaged throughout it all without it getting too hard and having variety with its skill tree. Loved the accessibility sliders which helped me through some of the puzzles in the dungeons and a boss if it got too a frustrating difficulty. Completed the game a few times because of the new game plus making it a new experience. The final boss of the DLC took me more attempts than i'd like to count but it was still amazing because you had to use all of the tools at your disposal to stay alive. Overall amazing game and would love to play it for the first time again.
One of the best games I ever played. Just ideal for me. It will be both logically and manually difficult but not too difficult to be frustrating, has very interesting plot, great graphics and soundtrack. 10/10.
Haven't finished the game at time of writing, but incredibly fun gameplay and a great story!
This game goes under a lot of radars, but its one of the best RPGs out there. There's a playable demo too, if you want to try the combat system and see how the game feels. It's 10/10 in my book, and I don't hand out perfect 10s lightly!
But be warned: This game has some of the most brutal puzzles in all of my gaming experience. Do not be ashamed to google a puzzle, I nearly lost my mind in one of the later dungeons due to my defiant stubbornness to not google walkthroughs, and I can't actually be certain that I'm exaggerating about the losing my mind part.
Actual Peak, and I don't mean that lightly. While Crosscode might be difficult, it's in a way that always feels satisfying, where every problem has a solution if you search closely enough.
Few games come closer to the full package than this one, in my opinion. Gameplay, story, visuals, music, everything's as close to perfect in as perfect a combination as I can think of. Others have likely gone more in depth on why than I have, So if you have to take something from what I have to say, take this:
Crosscode is a masterpiece, one that far too few people talk about. Try it. You won't be disappointed.
This game very quickly turned into a favorite of mine.
A lot of the boss fights are awesome, even the side-quest ones, and there's a lot of good puzzles that build upon each other really well, though the sheer amount of them can get exhausting over time.
The characters are pretty charming too.
YESSSSS!!! 9/10. One of the best pixel games I've ever touched. Perfect graphics, perfect combat, perfect story, perfect world, perfect everything. Would 100% recommend
Only critique is the length (about 60 hours) and that some puzzles can be aggravating.
10/10 story, both heartwarming and engaging. Combat is a delicate combination of fun and versatile, all while still being challenging. The scenery and world-building in so ahead of its time, not to mention for a game built on HTML 5. A must try game for people looking for a chance of pace from modern games.
This game is absolutely incredible. I bought it on a whim on a Switch eShop sale and fell so deeply in love with it that I bought the game a second time just to have it on PC. It's that good.
The dedication put into this game shows throughout the whole thing, from the little in-jokes and references to the genuinely amazing story. I'm not joking when I say that during my 1st playthrough on switch, I cried, laughed, felt most emotions that media makes me feel; and then I felt it AGAIN on my second playthrough here. This game's story and characters are so well done; and the gameplay is no slouch, either! It's incredibly smooth and satisfying to play (when I'm not getting my face handed to me by overleveled foes or stumped by a puzzle; one of my only gripes is that this game is HARD sometimes). The combat is admittedly not really as deep as advertised imo, since I often felt like I was just swinging away at the enemy and dodging occasionally, along with switching up elements sometimes, but what's here is so fun that I don't really care if it's not super deep. Against strong enemies, the game starts to feel almost souls-like in a way, with how I would keep dying and learning how to better combat them. And once you hit your first S-Rank killstreak you can never go back man, it's so fun! That's not even getting into the puzzles and exploration, both of which are very fun, and the sheer amount of sidequesting material to be found.
What I'm trying got say is this: PLAY CROSSCODE RIGHT NOW!! You wont regret it.
(oh but don't play this w/ keyboard & mouse. There's no autofire on keyboard & mouse so you have to click every time you fire projectiles and it sucks. Play with controller instead, since controllers have autofire and it is so much better. Other than that this game is amazing)
dis game is peak. ~50-60 hour playtime, SUPER engaging top-down combat, a skill tree that is easily hot-swapable and really fun to use, jumping between various modes that can be further specialized to suit any situation. really scratches the itch of fast-paced combat and rewarding a modest amount of technicality. also the characters are great and the story is good. pick it up
Extremely good puzzle game dressed as action rpg, which it does fine but if you're craving a puzzle game with a side of action rpg, this is the purchase to make
This is one of the best action RGPs I have ever played, at least in a pixel art format.
I would like to congratulate the devs, imo they understand what makes a action RPG a fun game and did a great job putting into this game. They have gained a new fan and I am enthusiastically looking forward for their next work
I love the gameplay, it is fast paced, dynamic, clever, keeps adding mechanics that work really well together when mastered, makes great use of the environment it is a joy to play and despite the length of the game, the combat and exploration never gets boring.
The puzzles are amazing, and not your typical boring (usually too easy) puzzles from most JRPG games, they once again make excellent use of the game mechanics and environment, and will make you think outside of the box to complete them, it is very engaging and rewarding.
I also love the concept (I won't spoil it here because I found that on my own and it was a please surprise), it something unusual that I personally never seen applied to a RPG before, it definitely allows for some interesting mechanics explanations within the game.
As a lower note, and because no game is perfect and there's always room for some criticism to be made for future improvement, I'll mention the parts I enjoyed the least:
The overall story of the game is actually quite decent and kept me engaged throughout the game, but is also not a writing masterpiece, most characters fall within quite cliche stereotypes and do not wander from these troupes throughout the game, the main character, despite her funny enough lack of dialogue, is probably the most interesting for me which is a good thing because well... it is the MC so you want it to be an interesting character.
The puzzles....again? Yes, well hear me out, while they are very interesting and unconventional, they are also very lengthy and a considerable amount of the gameplay is spend on these, which on certain times I found it to be too much and I just wanted to progress on the overall story and punch some mobs; some of these puzzles also have time mechanics which can be a bit frustrating because you know what to do but because you have miss pressed a button or hit a wall by mistake you have ruined it (this can be made easier on the settings so it is less of a problem but still).
Once again, congrats to the team behind this game, absolutely amazing.
Great game, I love when games have fast combat and the design here is really good.
The story is good, as a huge MMORPG player this definitely has a bit of a soft spot But I wouldn't say it's some grandiose story. The characters are alright but the narrative approach as it tries to be a single player in an MMORPG is really good.
The Dungeons are somewhat challenging, there's a lot of puzzles everywhere and it can feel like a chore at some point. But I don't mind, it reminds me of old JRPG like the Tales of series where they had annoying dungeons that would make you want to quit. So if you're not a person who likes puzzles you may hate this.
Last and most importantly, the combat is where this game truly shines. Honestly i have no words, I only hope you read this and try it if you love games with good combat design.
Gameplay - challenging
Aesthetics - appealing
Story - engaging
Music - hyping
CrossCode is just perfect~ I'll preach it like a religion.
The action combat is quite complex and that while every kind of build can work it'll always be challenged that you might wanna master all the other playstyles.
Its puzzles boggle the mind, as they should, it's always connected to your progression as a the player character. It's always satisfying to accomplish them and the pay off of it leading to the boss fight set piece that utilizes everything you've known and learned, crowns the experience.
The artstyle has a special place in my heart~ it is beautiful and consistent.
The story pulls on your heart, and the setup of the world makes you feel like it's an MMO with other people but it's not. Our main protag, Lea, is THE BEST silent MCs out there. Not so silent as she can only speak 3 words, but her personality is something to fall in love with along with all the other characters.
Music is just a Yes~ how good do you want it? YES. How banger and epic do you want it? YES!
Please play Crosscode! It might just give you a time of peace in life in the midst of all the chaos in the internet and in the world. Heck I'd jump into CrossWorlds were it real.
100/10
After playing this game I think ill spend the rest of my life trying to find something that is similar to it.
-The story is so good I couldn't stop thinking about it and was excited to find out more in the next chapter. The art, music and combat is great and the characters feel like real people. This is one of the games that is so good getting 100% is completely valid.
I just realized I never left a review for this!
IMO this is a must play, especially for those who enjoy a more retro graphic style. But the movement is far from "retro", the action is smooth and fast paced. But the puzzles really make you stop and think.
On top of all that, it has a brilliant story line with multiple twists. Some I saw coming, some I absolutely did not! 11/10
Hidden gem!
The puzzles become a bit hard later, but otherwise cool pixelart, good story and fun combat.
This game does a better "Sword Art Online" Than the actual sword art online games. Oh, and the games mechanics, characters and graphics are top tier! 10/10
Bought this game + DLC on sale and didn't touch it for some time. A few weeks later and i was "hey, i have nothing better to do, lemme check out this game" and BAM, played it nonstop and it's now my Top 1 game (even got all the achievements lol). Lovable characters, amazing combat mechanics, beautiful art style and music, well crafted puzzles, easy 10/10. Really worth giving it a try.
I can't describe it but something about this game feels so good. It may just be everything though
Really fun game, love the puzzles, gameplay and story :)
Game well-worth full price.
-amazing battle mechanics
-plenty of main/side quests
-uniquely designed boss fights
-x1 expansion pack
-assortment of weapons/armor
-top tier story writing
Solid 8+/10, worth full price, sale price is a steal. =]
Good game, a very old school zelda style-ish game with a combination of puzzle solving and challenging combat.
However puzzles can get quite overwhelming if you are not a puzzle enthusiast, fortunately for me I love solving stuff so this is my jam but I do have to say that the pacing and the balance between puzzle and combat is very jarring. It would be better if they can tone down the puzzle aspect
Puzzles and Combat is phenomenal in this game. Story is quite intriguing too. Can only recommend
Just starting out, but this game scratches that "being 12 again and running around elwynn forest with a sense of adventure" itch that no game has come remotely close to scratching. If you're nostalgic for that sort of thing 100% give this a shot.
This is possibly one of my favourite games, like top 3. The puzzles are hard yet teach you all the mechanics needed well. The combat is so fluid and fun. BIG SKILL TREE. The story is brilliant and the characters are all so expressive. The music is so peaceful/tense/joyous and very much fits the situation. The over world is massive and fun to explore, with parkour at every step and screen. The art is charming. Overall I very much love this game, and I highly recommend it.
There's a side quest where mafia parrots overtake a building you have to be the hostage negociator.
Really love the characters an the stoy ad the gameplay! excited for the teams next game!!! 0w0
It starts out strong but quickly becomes an absolute chore to play. The story isn't great and the characters that the game forces you to run around with are awful. One is has the temperament of an ADHD riddled toddler and the other is the insufferable guy from the "Uhm Axually" memes and having to read their banter makes my eyes bleed. Many of the puzzles are not hard, but tedious. A lot of the enemies just fly around or burrow around completely impervious to attacks and many, if not most, fights end with you character standing perfectly still aiming at enemies and just waiting for them to become vulnerable. It's a drag that most fights grind to a complete stop this way. 90% of all chests in the game reward you components to gear that you can combine at trader. Basically, every chest is about 1/8 of a piece of gear that will mostly likely be obsolete by the time you make it. I say 1/8th and not 1/4th because most gear needs more of each component than you get in a chest. On the other hand, a lot of times you can get those same parts by fighting enemies. Both become a chore. It's not great. There's a quest that has you hunting down all of the plants in the game and getting a require amount of drops from all of them. It's terrible. Why would anyone want to fight plants for hours on end.
IDK, I remember the hype around this game. Maybe I'm too late to the party. Maybe if I had got it when it first came out it would feel fresh and new and exciting. I'll prolly end out rushing through the rest of the game just so that I can say I beat it but I'd rather do my laundry, the dishes, shovel snow, make my bed and vacuum up my house. At least when those chores are done I have something to show for it.
Great game, beat it on my switch, and enjoyed every second. 10/10.
Portable its the way to go, was kind of annoying doing all the puzzles in PC (unless you use joystick), but didnt have problems in Switch.
a love letter to classic RPGs, Cross Code tests your dexterity, and mind in a game filled with wonderful worldbuilding, and above par quests.
