Описание

WHAT IS IT?
Dark, disturbing, unsettling - Beckett is a powerful narrative adventure game that gets under your skin and makes you question everything about yourself and the very nature of reality.

The game is a single-player, point-and-click style experience that lasts around 3 hours. But it will be in your head for a long time after.

WHY WE MADE IT
We made Beckett as a story that could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best of literature, theatre and independent world cinema. It won the Games category in the 2018 BAFTA Scotland awards, made various game-of-the-year lists (2018) and was made part of V&A Dundee's permanent gallery collection.

You could call it a psychological horror. You could call it an anti-love story. You could call it a surrealist nightmare. Beckett is a disturbing, unique experience that will make you question what it is to exist.

The game puts reality under the spotlight, drawing you into a missing person's case set in a dark and unforgiving world. Our main character, Beckett, morns the loss of his wife - she was everything to him, but time has passed and life has lost meaning. Then there's the City, which plays with Beckett like cat with a baby bird, making him act against his will. You must take control, explore, navigate, interact, talk, defy... we're all memories waiting to happen, we're all memories waiting to fade.

A visual novel with superb dialogue, great presentation, and an intriguing, seamless mix of multimedia styles. Not usually my sort of game but if you like interactive fiction, go straight for it.

The writing is purple and juvenile, lining a plot that exists mostly in exposition. That being said, I had a grand time reading out the text of the game with a friend and making fun of this. The presentation is (sometimes) kind of rad! Well worth the 79 cents.

As a auditory and visual experience, it is interesting and worth its cost. However, the storytelling is half baked with too many ideas/themes and not enough focus on any of them for it to be worthwhile. Their inspirations are very visible which is fine but the creators just left them at the very surface level, almost like the creator read a philosophy book's back blurb.
I think that they use the "dark and unsettling" aesthetic to mask the fact there is no substance to any of the ideas they present. each theme presented is essentially a paragraph you read every couple of minutes.
      it's tedious to play through

I want a world where Beckett speed runs are extremely popular on twitch and pass every other game in viewers. Sweaty dudes in bro tanks losing their minds over finding an exploit where you can clip through a wall and skip a bunch of existential dread filled dialogue. Come on people make it happen

A very experimental and I'd say art house visual novel in the same vein as Eraserhead movie or House of Leaves book. The story (a detective drama mostly) deals with topics of getting old, mental issues, trauma, the past and the essence of reality itself.
Becket has a fantastic yet experimental presentation: the whole game reminds a collage of static analog elements, ancient cinema pieces, some stop-motion. THis approach is highly impressionistic and feels like a early 20th century German impressionist film and a board game at the same time.
In terms of writing style and the plot this is for the fans of Disco Elysium and probably disturbing projects by Harvester Games.
Highly recommended if you tolerate indie and art house scene. Will take no more than 2,5 hours and it's actually a visual novel so there's no way to stuck.
