I recommend playing the free game and passing on this one.
For all the effort that went into this, there's much less gameplay than the first game, the story is made entirely incoherent (compared to mostly incoherent but somewhat indearing of the first game), the models used for combat look like generic asset flips, and you don't have the whimsy and fun of the Source Engine controls - as the game is made entirely on Unreal.
More than half of the game is spent without gameplay, it's either cutscene or walking, and there are long stretches of cutscenes that convey very little of substance - most of them could be cut to be a back-handed mention. This is one of the few instances where you need to stop showing and tell some of the information instead - it really drags on.
This feels like Estranged Act 1: Part 2: Baby's first Unreal engine game, and not in a good way. It's a shame it's a paid product, I really don't mean to come off as overly harsh, but you can't charge money for this. This has all of the hallmark qualities of a free game, yet it isn't one.
3/10
It's a great lil series, if you've never tried it yet. I recommend Act 1 and this one all day if you're a big Half-Life/Source game fan. I'm leaving wanting more, that's always good!
I'm sorry I have to say this but as someone who loved Act 1, this isn't even half the game that free mod was.
In order for me to reccomend this, I would have to first reccomend playing Estranged Act 1 first, since this picks up right where that left off and it's free, but if you actually liked Act 1 I can't reccomend this game anymore. Maybe if you really like walking simulators you could start right here.
I don't want to come off as too mean, but I have to be honest if I want this series to improve and reach the heights of the 1st game again.
There's barely any gameplay left, it's now mostly a walking simulator, after finishing the game my stats said I killed 16 zombies and 6 human enemies in the entire game. Most of the charm is also gone with the engine change from Source to the soulles generic Unreal engine. The combat reminds me of asset flip games, no offense to the dev.
Guns look stange and elongated, the sights on the machine gun are so far away when aiming that they're basically useless. Not that you'll use them much anyway, after killing the enemies carrying them and picking it up you'll never fight another human again.
The atmposphere has also been greatly deminished. Act 1 had a more survival horror vibe to it. It was a small unknown island who know where with smaller villages on it. Now they straight up tell you where the island is and there's a huge city on it. I guess the 1st game was more open to interpretation and I interpreted it differently then the developer intended it.
The story also moves at a snail's pace, I don't think it developed at all from the ending of Act 1, more like it wiped it almost completely clean so it could restart in a new setting in the sequel. You never see the scientist again from Act 1 or any other new NPCs.
Also the music is way to overpowering and loud. It just keeps going, not letting me explore, as soon as I step into it's designated room it's on full blast, sometimes I don't even know for what reason. Not that there's much reason to explore, since there are barely any enemies, you don't need supplies, most of the boxes are empty anyways and you can only hold 1 weapon at a time. The only thing worth looking for are the audio logs, although they get shorter the further in you get, until they only last a few seconds near the end of the game. I read everything on the maybe 3 computers you can use but I got no worthwile information out of them. And some QR codes wich I haven't bothered to look into yet.
I'd like to add something positive too, so I'll say I still really like the Mirror's Edge inspired offices and the new Control inspired hallways also look really nice.
Developers have done a good job of recreating the spooky atmosphere from the first part of the game.
HAD NO IDEA WHAT THIS WAS BUT IN LIBRARY HOURES LATER I FINISHED AND LOVED IT WE NEED MORE
its okay, i dont like it nearly as much as the first, the atmosphere isnt as rich, the gunplay feels worse, the story of this sequel sort of goes to shit and has so few interactions with characters and enemies that it isnt even remotely compelling.
An OK FPS with some elements of puzzling and platforming, which, for the most part, still has that "Source-engine game" feel that the prequel had (the wooden supply boxes were truly janky at times though).
The story is pretty generic and short, and while this helps the game from overstaying its welcome, it also makes some cutscenes feel dragged out. Specifically the one towards the end kind of broke the flow of the game for me.
The low price tag does feel right, given that there is no replay value (unless going for 100% achievements). If you find it while on sale, there is little reason to hesitate buying this and giving it a go.
This is more than just a sequel to the free game, 'Estranged: Act 1'. It's actually the second game in a series, but as of this writing the third game is still under development. You don't HAVE TO play the first game to play this one, but I strongly recommend you do.
This one begins with a short prequel which leads up to the starting point of the first game, then jumps forward in time to pick up the story from exactly the point that the first game ended. Both the gameplay and the storyline are pretty much more of the same thing you experienced in the first game, just with better graphics.
And, as with the first one, I don't really view this one as a game either. It's more like a Walking Sim with a little bit of FPS action thrown in, and it's one of those I can only play for about 30 minutes at a time because the camera movement gives me motion sickness.
The keyboard controls are the standard ones you'd expect for this type of game. Movement controls are walk, run, jump, and crouch. Item controls are pick-up/drop item, and interact/use item. There's no leveling up, no skills to learn, and no inventory to manage. There's a couple of simple puzzle situations, like finding an item to smash a window with, or stacking crates so that you can climb them to help get over a high obstacle.
So... since the story picks up here where the last one left off, that means you're still trying to find a way off of the island. You'll tromp through more caves, slosh through more sewers, and yes, find yourself back inside more buildings on the grounds of an evil corporation's top-secret research facilty where something bad has happened.
Of course, the corporation is still jamming all radio frequencies so that any distress calls don't reach the mainland. However, every time you walk by a radio you have no problem hearing John, the guy you met shortly after the beginning of the first game, who is apparently broadcasting from his cabin.
Throughout the game you'll meet, and be attacked by, guys who are the victims of whatever the bad thing is. They act like zombies, but they don't quite seem dead. I'd call them "infected". That would mean the bad thing is a virus, a chemical, or some other biohazard that somehow got out of the research lab.
We still don't really know, as there's still not any real backstory to the game. You'll also have several shootouts with some paid mercenaries who are serving as security guards, and you will eventually stumble upon a mysterious archaeological site which contains several skeletons.
Overall, I liked this sequel, but not as much as the first game. Since this one was just more of the same-old same-old, there was neither any real surprises, nor any twists to keep me guessing. The story was still solid, but was also starting to feel repetitive. In the end, that made this sequel seem to drag on just a little bit too long.
It's short game but really worth it.
Although the gameplay is simple and linear, it does it well and efficiently.
The storytelling is good too
Loved the prequel too and can't wait for the sequel
Just revisited the game to get the achievements I missed when I played it for the first time years ago. It kinda was a nostalgic trip from an era when I was hooked to Half-Life mods and I stumbled upon Estranged: Act I, and consequently Act II/The Departure.
First foremost, I somewhat agree with some people saying that this is a downgrade from the previous part.
Going from a HL2 mod to a standalone game made in Unreal Engine felt a bit off, specially when it tries to replicate the pick-props-and-toss-them-around mechanic from Source Engine.
Still, the game feels nice to play.
The story has gotten interesting, with more background of the enemy factions and the island. Also a cliffhanger teasing the third part. I just wish it was a bit longer.
If you liked Act I, I recommend playing this too. A 5€ game to chill and play in the afternoon.
I will now wait for Arctic Cold (Act III) to come out in the future.
