Insurgency Sandstorm was fun until this most recent update - by introducing cross play the game has been broken - it limits PvP to 10 players to a side only. Historically with 14 vs 14 the game was really fun. 10 vs 10 sucks, the maps are too big for this # of players. Devs please bring back 14 vs 14 for PC!
Game is addictive if you like milsim and competitive shooter at the same time. But Im leaving a negative review until they put back the 14v14
EDIT 3 days later: Apparently there are hotfixes to PC full player count prioritisation and possible other future fixes re: crossplay. As of right now though, the below still stands.
Sandstorm has been on the downslope for a while, and I could tolerate questionable game design decisions for the sake of good lobbies. It's how I've racked up such a ridiculous playtime (...although that includes time queuing for games...). Unfortunately the latest update adding Crossplay with consoles is the nail in the coffin for me.
There is nothing inherently wrong with crossplay, and think it benefits console ecosystems (i.e. Xbox vs PlayStation) massively. But with PC, I would argue:
i) PC vs console is generally pretty unfair for both sides. Rolling over lobbies was already a thing and now even more so.
ii) it's enabled by default and fairly obscured to disable, so if you want a match you're effectively forced to queue for Crossplay as most PC players probably haven't disabled it.
iii) as a result, the wait times are now even longer to join even slimmer servers when trying to play with people you know, as everyone is competing for fewer spaces.
iv) the maps themselves are not designed for console-based player caps, so when you do finally get into a match, it feels pretty dead.
It was a good ride, had a lot of fun, but this is where I get off.
Crossplay and 10vs10 killed the game. If they don't reverse the change this might as well be the final nail in the coffin.
Bugs, shitty servers and lackluster updates could be bearable but boring, empty (giant) maps where you can't find anyone simply breaks the fundamental gameplay.
Thank you for ruining my favorite game with the latest Update (Operation Resurgence).
The new trailer looks kind of promising on the surface (or for Console Players),
but the Update is more like a mercy shot for an already dying game.
I can't comprehend the genius idea to reduce the default player limit of all PVP game modes by about a third just to get matched with one or two Cross Play users, while the Server performance, Lightning and most importantly the Gameplay feel much worse. 10v10 is unplayable because of quitters and gameplay reasons and the now non-default 14v14 modes without CrossPlay are literally unplayable because you cant even find a match anymore.
but hey... now we got even more skins, cashgrab DLC´s.... and a long ago removed gamemode.
Game is great but the latest update made cross-play default which makes PC players default to 10v10 console lobbies. Just give everyone 14v14 matches guys it's not the same game.
This was a game that I really enjoyed before they introduced cross play.
It is now almost impossible to find a server without and playing with cross play is buggy and has terrible hit recognition.
I will be uninstalling.
Devs hate their playerbase and ruined the game with their latest update. I guess alienating their core fanbase by making the game 10v10 made sense to some pencil pusher at NWI since it would increase shareholder revenue lmfao
10v10 has made an already dead feeling game even worse. Maps are basically silent and you're there is no action. It was worth playing but until you can do 14v14 again there is no reason to play.
This review exists as a form of blackmail. I have played Insurgency for almost 500 hours now, I love this game but recently they have made a change that is ruining a large portion of the fun.
Matches in this game on PC have always supported 14v14 players, but recently they have added cross-play with consoles and are limiting matches to 10v10 because for some reason they don't trust consoles to handle the extra 8 players. You can disable cross-play, but they have made it the default. So now, only experienced players with the know-how to disable it do, thus leaving the servers with the normal lobby size (14v14) mostly empty. This is tragic, 8 less players throws off the pace of the game that I know and love.
New World Interactive should just make it so consoles can play 14v14 matches. I highly suspect most of their user base is on PC, so if the last gen consoles take a performance hit, so be it.
If this is fixed I will delete this review, or replace it with a positive one. God bless.
the game does not feel the same after the last update.
with cross play being the default option, it makes it impossible to find 14v14 games.
OMFG, i've been playing insurgency since the original insurgency: source (2014) and this recent update has been a complete DISASTER, 10v10??? are u fckin kidding me? it has completely altered the experience fundamentally. This isnt't insurgency anymore, push and firefight just feels barren and empty. The core insurgency experience has been removed from the game. FIX THIS RIGHT NOW NWI!
I CANNOT recommend this game in its current state, the game has betrayed it's OWN design, stay TF away from this game if you haven't bought it already, play the original insurgency (2014) or honestly just buy call of duty: modern warfare 2 (2009) because that is essentially what this game has become after the most recent update.
PLEASE FIX THIS NWI!!!!! ffs, who thought this would be a good idea??? I'm going back to source until the fix sandstorm. ffs...
Insurgency has been an all-time great game until the most recent patch where they reduced the player count to 10v10 for cross-play.
The game modes/maps are not designed for the reduced player count.
Force the console players to 14v14.
I will change this back to positive once 10x10 change is reversed.
This update has completely killed the multiplayer experience for me. After over 2000 hours, seeing my favorite shooter crash and burn like this is infuriating. The dev team is completely out of touch and incompetent. Frame drops, trash servers, and mandatory 10v10 have ruined the game with this update.
This update has changed the flow and feel of this game for me in an overwhelmingly negative way. Frontlines and push with 10v10 are boring, slow, and frustrating. Players quitting forces me to play 7v7 or worse on large maps like Crossing or Outskirts, making me not want to play the core game modes. They removed the ability to pull up another player's steam, making it harder to friend other players or check for VAC Bans, making getting rid of cheaters harder.
No one asked for these changes. It seems like the devs are shooting the PC player base in the foot to try and keep the console player base on life support for another year or so. This is just another terrible change in a long history of terrible changes things like like removing map reshuffle, making Skirmish a limited-time mode, and then adding defusal and free-for-all instead in an attempt to leech off the Call of Duty player base instead of sticking to their roots. This game has been on unstable ground ever since the original dev team left with the quality and quantity of content declining every update.
Hopefully, the dev can pull their heads out of their asses and rub their last two remaining brain cells together to fix things until then I cannot recommend this game.

The new update seems to have ruined the experience, for myself at least. With crossplay enabled you are defaulted to a 10 v 10 game mode which is far worse than 14 v 14. Console players might not notice a difference but for PC it is a big downgrade. Trying to find a match with crossplay disabled is impossible as by default it is enabled.
Until maps default to 14 v 14 or crossplay is disabled/reverted I will have to leave this negative review, which pains me as this is a game I love.
Last update is absolutely horrendous
-Upsides:
- 3 new weapons
Crossplay (though largely irrelevant due to the lack of console players)
-Downsides:
- Poor implementation of WCX (MCX) and AR-7090: These relatively niche weapons should be in the Advisor class, as the
Rifleman class already has 9 options, excluding these two.
The developers attempted to add Picatinny front grips to a Keymod handguard on the WCX, resulting in a visually
mismatched and floating appearance. A free 3D model of proper grips could easily have been used.
- The AR-7090 uses rudimentary sights on top of the carry handle instead of the correct ones.
- No new map
- No new game modes
- No new mechanics
- No new gun upgrades
- No gameplay balance adjustments for current game modes
Excellent balance between arcade and realism FPS gameplay. After years of playing it, I still like it.
Surprisingly good.
Amazing gunplay, intense firefights and nice graphics.
They earned a redemption arc after it not being optimised in the start, it now runs beautifully on max settings with lots of bots spawned in for large scale battles.
Good amount of weapons, attachments and loadouts to mess around and experiment with.
Don't forget the workshop, allowing new maps, weapons and the such.
It is a steal for 8 quid at the moment.
really good really realistic really bombastic really idk really ok really guntastic really real really tactical really something...
I only play local play because I hate human interaction. The game is okay, there are many mods and custom maps. Recommended for wasting your time whose life is no longer useful
Perfectly made military-shooter game that will make you feel like you are actually deployed for a mission or a battleground. Sounds are the incredible point of this game, its very well made and resembles all the real life aspects. Its definitely by no means the most realistic one compared to other popular shooter games excluding 1 or 2 games.
Another great Insurgency game! Bullets actually hurt in this game so if you like playing COD on core then well... good luck...
great gunplay and general movement. very immersive voicelines (probably would scream like that if i was in a gunfight as intense as in insurgency) but very small player base as im always running into the same people. WE NEED MORE PLAYERS!!!!
Absolutely fun to play. Played for a long time on console, now moved over to play on Steam. Sucks that the studio doesn't exist anymore and killed all hopes for new Insurgency, but that's the industry these days.
One of the best tactical shooters available. great players and even better devs.
Very fun tactical shooter, devs are still updating the game with new content.
Amazing graphics, well optimized, realistic but not to the point where it ruins the fun
Excellent gun play and sound mechanics. Wide variety of maps, features, and customization.
This game is excellent for those who love a realistic depiction of firearms and explosives. Developers should add more guns and more optic choices and change the 1-2x holographic to 1-3x.
A good mix of tactical-shooter and less-serious action gaming. About everything I could want in a chill, team-based fps.
Like most shooters but on permanent hardcore mode. Very fun even when losing a round.
10/10 amazing game. My french friend and I we are playing this game for a while now. Its pretty cool, we have alot of fun and we met some cool fun people but the problem is ... you are in the game and you see a dressed black men with a bomb the only thing you hear is "some realistic phone ringing" and you explode with him. It gave me PTSD...nice game experience!!!!
I would certainly say this is worth it for people who are willing to have an immersive tactical FPS experience. It's basically a remake of the original Insurgency (source) but with more added content. In my personal opinion I think this game is better than other tactical FPS games out there at the moment. I'd really recommend this to people who have experience in tactical/milsim FPS games because if you're a newbie you won't enjoy dying in the open too often. That's how it is in almost every tactical/milsim FPS game.
There are two side to this game:
Frustrating, engaging multiplayer, and fun, repetitive PvE.
To sum the both up, multiplayer is very much ruined by cheaters and sweaty assholes that may as well be cheating, but redeemed (occasionally) with moments where everything just goes right. Maybe you pull of some John Wick type shit in the final stretch, I dunno, but those moments are definitely there.
The PvE is without a doubt, my favourite part of the game. Incredibly target rich environments with you and up to eight other guys? Great fun... for a few matches or so. It could be that I just don't have the inner fatty required to sit on IS all day, PvE or not, but it gets real boring really quick. Sure, you can ramp up the difficultly with hardcore, but that just makes it a less arcade-y experience, not a gritty PvE FPS like I was hoping for.
That's really it. A could-be fun game riddled with walls (not the cover kind) and short-lived PvE highs that has me wishing there was a 'meh' recommendation.
It's a good game, but there are some issues (although it's probably mostly just my lacking hardware), but I did just buy the 1+2+3 year game pass, and the customisation options aren't appearing (the game does recognise that I own them, they're still locked though, it's weird) I'm restarting the game just now to see if that was the issue. Still love the actual gameplay though :D
Pretty cool game but the community is 1/3 weird veterans who never grew up, 1/3 actually cool veterans, and 1/3 people shouting the n word
amazing game. i think its by far the best game out there. i do wish they added more guns or even change them up every once in awhile or something and maybe a few more add-on's. skins are real cheap wish is nice. overall game play feels nice the movement is nice the leans are great. sometimes when you spawn tho you die fast which can get annoying but thats not often.
Its realistic somewhat and fun ,But i like the first game more ,I moved on to Squad and i would not return here again for two reasons, too small maps and more focus on Close combat ,its still fun but not too much for me
the gun play is some of the best ive found in a shooter like this. you're gonna die A LOT, you wont know where you got shot from without talking to team mates. 10/10
its a good fps with a bit more realism than cod can jump in and play as no pay to win and with certain game modes strategy comes in to play making more of a challenge.better with friends and can be annoying at first as you can to die a lot from people you cant see but once used to how the game plays really enjoyable.
DISCLAIMER
If you're planning to buy this game today: don't. Not until they fix the servers. Not an, "Oh man the the server can't register my shots!" kind of server issue, but, "Why is everyone getting 800 ms ping!?" kind of server issue. And I have no idea if NWI is planning to fix this issue or not.
[Gameplay - PVE]
This game has both co-op and PVP. However, I never touched the PVP, so this will only explain the PVE game modes.
In Co-Op, you have Checkpoint which is capture several objectives around the map, Hardcore Checkpoint (clue's in the name), Survival where you're only armed with a pistol and a dream, and Outpost, a wave defense game. Disable Outpost, and you should be able to have fun.
In Checkpoint, there are several "classes" of operators that you can choose, like your Demolition, Sniper, Gunner, etc. But the differentiating factor is your Commander and Observer. Commander and Observer can call in fire supports, helping you finish your objective.
The weapon systems are amazing. While it does have recoil, it's not the kind of stupid recoil kick you'll get in other games. The damage model is also great -- your buckshot shotgun won't suddenly turn to birdshot after several meters. The Fire Support is also amazing, allowing you to call in artillery strikes, Gunship, even A-10 BRRRRRRRTTTTTT. They have cooldowns and limits so you can't call that Gunship multiple times throughout a single round.
Also, if someone's phone is ringing, shoot them immediately.
[Graphics]
The graphics are okay. Nothing mindblowing, but it's not bad. However, it felt rather unoptimized and would become a stuttery mess whenever a wave of enemies are spawning. Low-Medium settings should be good enough to lower the duration this stutter occurs, especially during events (or custom servers) with a lot more characters, and the graphics still look decent as long as you don't pixel peep. With the amount of chaos that usually occurs in the round, you probably won't have time to pixel peep, anyway.
[Sound]
Amazing. From the sound of your weapons, the voiceover, the environment, the fire support, and, of course, the voice chat; they're being done exceptionally well. The voice from the radial wheel (or chat wheel) change according to your situation, and you can even trade insults with the AI bots. You can also hear when the AI enemies call for fire support, they can also hear your communications with your team. There are 6 types of "voice" in the game (3 for security and 3 for insurgents), and I know that one of the voice in Security (Spec Ops) have around 1500 voice lines. I've played for 300+ hours and I still haven't heard all of the voice lines.
Not just that, but your .50 cal sniper rifle would make your ears ring when you magdump it. The sound of the helicopter as it comes in to either assist you (or massacre you, depending on which side you're on). The sound of the A-10 gun run. They've done an amazing job at this.
[AI]
AI is decent. They sometimes are so dumb that they'll stand around while being shot at (especially while holding a grenade), but sometimes they toggle their wall hacks and shoot you through a wall while you're deep inside a room and the enemy is outside. However, mostly they stay between these ranges.
[Bugs/Issues]
A lot. Sometimes the servers just crap itself. There are quite a lot of spots, especially around the objective room, where you'll rubberband if you got close to it -- this is usually a small area in the room, the size of the resupply box. Sometimes the enemy artillery could shoot through the ceiling. Sometimes you'll spawn in the ceiling as you get fused with other players that are spawned together with you, and the game would kill you because you're outside of the normal map. Sometimes the game decided, after an update, to send every player a "voice ban" because they got reported abusing voice chat, despite never even using voice chat.
However, one of the worst ones was that enemies could sometimes spawn inside the wall of your objective, making you unable to capture the objective. There are lots of annoying and critical bugs that has been there since forever.
They also have performance issues. Especially when spawning a wave of enemies, you can "feel" them coming from the stutters. This would worsen if the game is spawning a larger than normal amount of enemies.
[TLDR]
This game is really fun to play with. The graphics are okay, the sounds are amazing, the gameplay is great; this game is criminally underrated. However, the server issue is a problem that they need to fix, as well as patching out bugs.
I like that this game is realistic and the teamwork needed is difficult. The weapon customization is alot of weapons and i enjoy all the different classes to use. It is pretty funny though the AI dialogue between enemies.
A lot of FPS games claim to be "the most realistic".
Well, I gotta say: Insurgency Sandstorm is the first game that I've played, that felt like it actually understood how guns work. From the graphics to the sounds to the physics to the handling, this game just really understood the assignment and manages to really make the immersion happen.
I'm no good with words, so if you want an actual good review and explanation why this game is awesome, go watch TheRussianBadger's video, he's already said it all.
Just the right blend of arcade and realism for me. Guns sound and play excellent, gamemodes are fun, very, very few bugs. My go-to FPS
Super fun game! Its the perfect blend of arcade shooter and hardcore shooter. if you have ever played arma or squad and thought it was too hard, and when you played call of duty said it was too fast paced. this is the perfect blend of both worlds. game is still active and worth a buy at full price
very nice! tactical, 1-2 shots kill people(unless you have a low caliber from too far away)
Made me enjoy tactical modern fps again
Game is fantastic on what it brings. Sounds are exceptional, gunplay is pretty solid, overall it's a very good game and still holds its own even today. Hopefully when they make a sequel they should expand the guns and make the gun customization more broad like COD's gunsmith or Tarkov's, they should also include more biomes like a forest. Character customization is pretty cool too, if they expand that to the sequel it's alright.
I got the game for half off which is a bargain multiplayer is pretty fun and the game is compatible with mods so you customize it to your liking. Co-op is pretty fun to but the bots can be complete bull s**t sometimes, what do I mean? close quarter game play you'll sneak up on a Bot while turning a corner and he wont even be facing your direction 9 times outa 10 he'll draw his gun quicker than you and dink you in the head or sometimes they'll shoot you through concrete walls , and there's no kill cam so you cant see who killed you or where, not to mention they are pretty lethal with grenades. Last but not least switching to your knife is painful not only is the animation clunky and stiff but it feels like your knife is lost in your pocket that's filled with change for the laundry mat along with your earbuds and chewing gum. In my personal opinion its a great game you can enjoy it if your a casual player that has 20 minutes to kill or you can take it seriously and be competitive a solid 7.5 out of 10
I've got dozens (if not hundreds) of hours in the Xbox console version, and this pc version is so much more awesome: mods, less wonky aim, better framerate, etc. Players are a little dicey as some are trolls and some of the seriously high ranks just run through objectives and hoard the glory and gunplay, but still a great time most of the time.
