For under $10 it's different and fun.
Has bugs though freezes about four levels in, had to force quit. Background noise gets very repetitive very fast. Otherwise different and interesting. Wish they would have spent more time on it thought. Can't give it a thumbs up because of the bugs though.
game is compleatly broken ive played it before and it was fine but now when i load the game its nothing but lag and skipping around it makes my head hurt i cant even get enough fps to get to the settings to turn them down
You can literally cut of zombies arms, legs and hands.
I recommend punching the test dummy/zombie with a sledgehammer so he ragdolls and then fucking smack him to dead.
The game is $6 normally and on sale you can get both this and the original out of ammo for $3, what that 3-6 dollars will get you is a simple, fun, and short vr game or games, the entire game is a shooty shooty tower defense with little single man missions to break up the pace and let you use some of the weapons in a more controlled environment that isnt complete chaos and for $5??? it's a fun game made early into vr popularity when things werent certain to take off like they inevitably have, the only real complaint I can find for this game is that the index controllers are not made for this kind of thing but they work all the same, things simply get clumsy at times.
This game has lots of potential but to begin with the graphics were set to high from the get go and changing it with the lag is pretty difficult. And some other things I'm too lazy to list. But as the updates get release I think the game will get better.
Could have been a good game but the first person level are laggy, even in the worst graphics.
It's sad because the "tower defense" mode is really good and doesn't lag :/
Broken mess
The game is unplayable and the devs have no intention of fixing it
Tested with oculus link on the oculus quest 2
While I enjoy OOA, this game is totally different from the original. I originally found the OOA franchise just looking for VR games and thought it would be fun to play. The original game was, this one is a different story. I don't think it will be possible to explain why I dislike this game without comparing it to the original.
Let me explain everything that makes the two games different, both for the better and for worse.
- Gameplay
Out of ammo 1 had great gunplay, the only problem I had with it was the throwing mechanics being totally disgusting and that essentially made grenades useless. In OOA 2, the throwing mechanics have been fixed, this was the first thing I noticed in the tutorial and it immediately satisfied me. However, while throwing weapons were easier to use in this game, guns were completely useless. The only time first person combat is really important is during the first person campaign missions, I will go into why those are the worst later. Guns in this game are a chore to use. Their only use is to shoot bandits which are the only ranged enemies in the game, bandits only show up during the non-first person missions. Again, I will talk about these missions later.
First person movement in OOA2 is essentially the usual expectation I have for VR games, however this expectation is very low. Obviously I wish VR games had better movement but I can't really say more since its not used in the actual meat of the game.
- Campaign
The "campaign" in OOA1 is not a campaign. It is just a collection of levels, however there is a recognizable progression of difficulty in the original game.
The campaign in OOA2 is an actual story driven campaign. There is a story in this game, but there isn't any difficulty progression until the final level which I only nearly failed on my first try. OOA2 is not hard. The levels all have the same strategy for beating them this is it:
(I will discuss all these mechanics later).
Step 1:
Send the survivors to gather scrap.
Step 2: place barricades by the scrap piles
Step 3: place a platform and a guard tower by each scrap pile
Step 4: Healing Doggo
Step 5: Win level.
Notice how I did not discuss the usage of possession at all. This is because possession is useless.
- Possession
Possession is an essential selling point of both OOA games. If you want to possess your units buy OOA1, do not buy this game.
Possession in OOA2 is disappointing for multiple reasons.
1. Gunplay is painful, the double barrel shotgun is very difficult to get used to reloading and if you have multiple guns reloading becomes a massive problem. This makes possession pointless and the NPCs have no trouble aiming and reloading on their own. The NPCs easily carry the player through every level.
2. Resource Management. OOA1 had no focus on resource management. You get a supply delivery, you use it. OOA2 however, uses a resource material called scrap. Scrap must be constantly collected by NPCs during which time they cannot fight. I actually like the concept of scrap being a sort of currency...
But the usage of scrap is what makes possession difficult. This game would not be an Out of Ammo game, without you running out of ammo. When an NPC runs out of ammo, YOU MUST REFILL IT. YOU HAVE TO. So this often results in the player possessing an NPC when suddenly someone screams "NEED AMMO" at which point you MUST REFILL IT, I mean must, if you don't the unit will die, despite having a melee weapon (I will go into NPC AI later). Anyways, if the unit is lost it can put strain on your defenses, I said the game was easy, but what I didn't say was that you had to play it properly. Possession is completely impossible when you have to reload ammo the whole game.
3. Possession is useless. The NPCs have perfect aim and reload like gods. Taking possession of an npc is not efficient nor fun.
First Person levels
The Campaign consists of 3 first person levels and 4 basic god mode levels. The first person levels are just filler .
They are not enjoyable, nor is there ever any imminent danger unless you decide to just stop playing the game. This is a good time for me to talk about Melee weapons. Melee weapons are hilariously overpowered. Every FP level has overpowered melee weapons in it. All you need to do to win is pick one up and you'll be fine. There is no better way I can describe how I used melee weapons other than I just spammed them. Just twist your wrist and the weapon can rip off a zombie's head. There is no danger in the FP levels. Before you buy this game, consider the fact that you will only play 4 levels that are actually out of ammo-esk and even then, you are getting nothing but a tower defense game because possession is just a no no.
NPCs
There are 2 types of NPCs in this game, survivors and enemies.
Survivors:
Nothing special, they're just people, you can assign them to structures and scrap piles. They don't miss their shots.
Phrases: "NEED AMMO" and more.
Enemies:
During my playtime I noticed 3 enemy variants.
Zombies: No danger, they only drain ammo
Phrases: "FRIEND?" and more
Bandits: Dangerous, they should be dealt with immediately... By the NPCs, not you.
Phrases: "WOOOOOO WE GOTCHA BOIIII" and more.
Reapers: Low Danger? They seem to have a ranged AOE attack, but I've never seen an NPC die due to them. Consider them weaker bandits.
Keep in mind that I have only 90 minutes in this game as of writing this review, I did beat the entire game on normal in that time and found none of these enemies to be particularly special.
Structures
The structures are the best part of this game. I am not joking. All structures have upgrades, however the NPCs will not use the upgrades.
Barricade
The barricade is a structure that gives the NPC a shotgun.
Upgrades: Nailgun turret - A nailgun turret, I don't remember if it was automated but I know that I had no use to buy this upgrade since the NPCs COULD NOT USE IT.
Flamethrower - definitely not automated, didn't buy it because the NPCS COULD NOT USE IT.
Upgraded armaments There might be more to this however all I know is that it gives the NPC a SMG, but the NPC COULD NOT USE IT. This upgrade was only useful if you intended to possess the unit and use the SMG yourself.
Guard Tower
Sniper NPC, a must have for dealing with bandits.
Some sort of turret I forgot it but I do know one thing: THE NPCS CAN'T USE IT.
Upgraded Armaments Same thing, plus some molotovs. Again, the npcs can't use it.
Something else (Npcs can't use it).
Platform
Gives the npc a revolver, good for dealing with bandits. A very useful tower.
Some sort of turret Npcs cannot use it obviously.
The healing doggo This is the only upgrade in the entire game that gives the npcs something useful. When an npc is injured, the platform npc will throw the tennis ball to that npc, the healing doggo will then create a temporary healing aura at the npc. This upgrade is a must have.
Forward Base Notice how I actually remembered the upgrade name? Yeah, this is because the game kept telling me "Nice platform, how about you upgrade it to receive scrap!" As you can see, this acts as a drop off point for scrap. This can significantly reduce scrap collection times, also a must have. Only problem is that npc pathfinding is garbage, the npcs will always deposit scrap to the RIGHT side of the platform.
Ok so this review is massive. And I'm tired, here's the TL;DR
OOA1 is a better game.
OOA2 Makes possession useless and only has 4 real campaign levels that have some level of enjoyment in it. Do not buy OOA2, if you liked OOA1, you will likely not like this game. Do not expect more updates to these games. OOA1 still is missing some of the great improvements brought to the second game but it is still better.
CLEARLY ABANDONED BY THE DEVS, JUST LIKE OOA.
While these devs ('mister' hall) should have put there efforts in the original OOA, they made this, that is basicly the same kinda game, but with zombies. The original OOA is even more 'done' and polished than this game. Hall stated months ago that 'there is no money in making vr games, yet has no problem trying twice and charging for (now 2) games that, imho, fall short, while having a great base concept.
I cannot recommend spending money on this. And personally will try to keep away from any more games that somewhere has any connections with Hall. But of course, everybody needs to make up their own mind.
why is there still no free locomotion?teleport is a no go for me and most other players.if you cant handle free locomotion with trackpad then change the option to teleport.so simple no excuse
As much as I wish I could reccommend this game, I just couldn't. I loved the concept, but there is no survivor mode like seen in the original Out of Ammo, and the only way to play is to go through the campaign. Don't get be wrong, the campaign was fine, but I was expecting more of what the original OOA was. I'm going to refund the game and I will buy again if there is a survival mode added. One last cricicism is that not much effort was put into the voice lines.
Out of Ammo was one of the first VR games I have played that is not no-brainer shooter.
I really liked the idea they went for but application was somewhat lacking.
Death Drive feels better in gameplay-wise and it has a soul compared to Out of Ammo.
Although game is fun, it is way too short to next to none replayability.
Once I finished the campaign, I have tried the "hard mode" - appreciate devs going for that by the way.
To be honest, it didn't feel like a challenge even in the hard mode. It is fun to play but it's not in any way challenging to play.
This can be a hard turn off for some folks along with it's campaign being really short. So keep an eye out for that.
I have enjoyed it but if I knew it was this short and easy - I would probably wait for some difficulty fine-tuning and extra content or a sale.
Nevertheless, I recommend the game because we need more devs doing some out of box games in the endless sea of no-brainer shooters of VR. Gameplay feels great and makes you feel VR has much more place to grow except shooters.
PS. for some reason Steam shows 0.2 play time. Actually completed campaign twice on normal and hard mode. Not sure why it's not shown.
This game is one of the best VR games I've ever played! It is too easy so maybe there could be more difficulties. I still haven't passed chapter 5 yet because it seems like endless zombies but I know there is an ending to it. If you know how to pass that chapter then please tell me. Thanks!
The game is pathetically easy, essentially placing a single tower next to a scrap pile secures your economy for the whole game.
There is no variation in the defences as there are only 3 defences available.
Could not find out how to equip defences with better weapons or if that is even possible. However they simply don't need them as the difficulty doesn't ramp up.
Picking up items felt clunky and unintuitive which lead to the first person missions simply not being fun.
Personally controling the towers was more of a gimic than actually useful, as the AI was perfectly capable of manning them. Nor was it intresting as the weapons stayed the same depenent on the tower built.
Overall pretty dull experience.
Worth it.
Buy it and play already.
Right mix of humor and action, fun mechanics.
Good selection of weapons.
Very engaging storeline, relevant to the gameplay.
Solid amount of content for the price.
I would like to see higher difficulty levels added to increase replay.
More of this series please, had alot of fun and didnt want it to be over!
I really like the concept and mechanics of this game. I dont have much play time because I was getting pretty frustrated with how dificult it can be to select units or structures when they are close together. If I wanted to possess a unit who was standing just outside a bunker it would almost always possess a unit standing inside the bunker. This would happen over and over basically leaving that unit useless untill he walked away on his own. Trying to hold my hand at just the right angle to select the unit I want would often lead to accidental upgrades and resources spent on a structure. I understand that I could avoid this with more carefull placement of my units. I could try harder to keep them away from each other but that feels like a chore especially when things get hectic. This may not be a problem for others but for me it made me put the game down. I feel like out of ammo worked better as far as unit selection.
I also think the voice acting is pretty rough but the dialog can be genuinely funny when its not overly cheesy. Some of the melee weapons are held at odd angles, making them awkward to use.
My overall feeling about the game is that its good but has some frustrating flaws. I was really excited to play it but it left me disapointed. I will play it again and if they address some of these issues I will change my review to recommend.
I felt the price is good for the content and experience they offer.
Good concept, well executed and reasonably priced. You should get it
EDIT: so it turns out the game is pretty short, I beat the campaign in 2 hours, but its still enjoyable and I think reasonable for the price. I really hope the devs bring some updates though to better flesh out the systems they have in place. I felt like just as I finally got hte hang of properly positioning buildings and upgrading them the game ended. Would like to see either a few more levels, or an endless mode of sorts, and would like buildings to have more than one level of weapon upgrade. Still a good game. initial review continues below
The campaign has you roaming from place to place in a van, with the levels being places you need to stop for one reason or another. You get some sequences that are played in first person, and they're enjoyable. The majority of levels so far are the strategy types where you build defences and position your guys. They added a mechanic where you're not just defending from endless waves which is nice and increases the challenge. When you arrive you assign a couple guys to collecting scrap who will be defenseless while they collect, so you protect them until you have enough resources to complete the level, at least for the first few levels. That's the core gameplay loop for now, and though its simple it's a lot of fun.
I think I'm on the 5th mission or so, with an hour and half clocked. Not sure how long the game is but really enjoying it so far. Starts off pretty easy but gets challenging when they introduce new enemy types.
It's Out of Ammo but better, better building, better upgrades, better weapons, better story, better gore, better movement, better side missions, just fucking better!
Did I say it's better
Also need the "thankyou very much" song as DLC it's fucking addictive.
This is a real surprise. Out of Ammo was a great idea, and his concept was (still is) very experimental for virtual reality, mixing strategy and shooting action, tabletop and first person perspective. They worked hard adding more game modes and contents, but still the game was a bit out of focus without real goals.
Where Death Drive is built over the Out of Ammo foundations, is just more than a simple upgrade. This is actually a real game, with a campaign than mixes first person and third person chapters in a meaningful way. It has a story and a very humorous zombie environment, I laughed several times finding my all time favourite weapon inside (there are countless weapons to use): a stylized Gibson Flyng V electical guitar used as an axe, than actually is a dangerous thing to manage for your safety even in real life.
First person missions are not just about killing waves of zombies, where this is obviously an important part of the game. It implements a nice dash teleport locomotion like Raw Data, and if you're using a melee weapon you can dash over enemies inflicting damages. Third person are basically the old Out of Ammo way to play, with additional resources to extract like a common RTS, because your goal is to collect enough scraps to continue your journey. You still can use any unit in first person to fight, if you prefer this approach.
A classic issue with the old Out of Ammo was the weak frame rate, and an annoying aliasing. Both are no more a problem, the game run just fine with a 970 and everything is sharp. The only real issue I can mention is the overall lenght, I wish the game was longer (can be finished in less than two hours) but the price is reasonable for the quality delivered and old owners can get a 20% discount buying the Fun Bundle.
The World has fallen to a Zombie apocalypse (again) naturally the only choice is to make some desperate journey to find safety, luckily some nice chaps in an RV provide just such a chance! As I shall (inevitably) demonstrate in video form https://youtu.be/ibogMyq6loQ
Gameplay consists of a mix of pure first person fights for survival in a variety of locations and real time strategy/tower defence like missions which have you towering over the battle like some sort of giant, ordering defences to be constructed and upgraded or leaping into the action directly by taking control of a survivor.
Its very polished and satisfying, with an endearing simple art style. As you would expect from a squeal the gameplay is slick and well paced with a great amount of content for the price (Although more would always be good).
Cons: Teleport movement isn't ideal and the restriction in where you could move to had me struggling to reach scrap piles without hitting things in the real world occasionally.
Zombies aren't very dangerous in the first person missions.
Would also love a spectator cam for making better video content, but that's purely a youtuber thing.
It's fun. Highly recommend to those interested in a zombie tower defense. Plus you can shoot big guns and use melee.
After the tutorial. The game starts off with you defending a pub for 3-5 minutes. They just drop you in the middle of a zombie apocalypse with a real sense of panic. Looking everywhere for shotgun shells. Zombies breaking windows and climbing in.
The animations and decapitation ragdolls are just plain fun.
There's even a little pug dog that you throw a tennis ball and he runs over and discovers sh*t and heals survivors.
The god view and setting up towers in a gas station parking lot is amazing if you like tower defense. Upgrading. Resupplying ammo. Sending survivors out to collect scrap and hoping they don't die.
I think this game is perfect. I love it. I like it WAY MORE than the original Out of Ammo. GG!
