Описание

Every gaming generation had its hallmark -- and "99Vidas" recaptures them all!

Final Fight, Double Dragon, Battletoads, Streets of Rage… What do all of these games have in common? They all represent the glory of the "beat 'em up" genre, a staple of gaming in the 80's and 90's. Developer QUByte Interactive took inspiration from all of the the unforgetable notes from that game style to proudly bring you "99Vidas".

"99Vidas" is a brawler set in a contemporary world, but that pays tribute to both the classic and the new in the gaming industry. Brought to you in 16-bit pixelated glory, chock-full of references to not only gaming but also 80's and 90's pop culture. "99Vidas" takes full advantage modern era gameplay mechanics, making it the best of both worlds.

6 stages (with more to come) will take you on a journey to different parts of the world to face hordes of fierce enemies and relentless bosses, but you don’t have to do it alone: you can face this challenge with up to 3 other players in co-op play, both local and online.

99 Vidas is one of my favourite modern examples of Beat 'em up genre.

I absolutely love the visuals and the variety in playable characters. The upgrade system gives a bit more challenge to the game, as you make the best decision on how you spend your points in the shop.

One of the best parts of the game is the soundtrack. It captures the essence of Yuzo Koshiro's Streets of Rage music and complements the on screen action perfectly.

I'd love to see a sequel at some point, and this is something that is teased in the ending sequence.

I'd seen this around, but got recommended as a "true beat em up gem". Considering South American devs are often some of the most passionate and creative, I went for it.

Now, I've got a couple 4k monitors and that tends to cause some issues in older games. I usually need to get into the options and fiddle around between borderless or true fullscreen. In this case, unless I manually drop my resolution, I've gotta play windowed. That's pretty lame.

The game itself is a bit like a jank Double Dragon. That is, enemies are very aggressive, and punishes are brutal. You need to learn your move recovery timing and end positioning because doing an air punch (no knockdown) into a couple dudes but being a little out of the hurtbox of one of them means you're going to get blasted. Most enemies have a hard knockdown, and many have an invincible move. The basic kick is a knockback get-offa-me thing, which helps a little, but that goes into the reset where your active frames are fairly short and an enemy standing up might just wake up through your meaty to take a quarter of your life.

The power up system is cool. The basic attacks are very lame, but each character gets to shop for more skills after each level, and they're super important to playstyle. You also get enough money to buy several each level, so level 2 feels a bit more exciting with a bunch of new tech, etc.

The backgrounds are gorgeous and the UI is very clear. The character and enemy sprites themselves look like kinda of a River City Ransom Underground X Scott Pilgrim fanart project, definitely not to my liking. The hard black lines compared to the smooth Street of Rage-calibre backgrounds is too hard of a visual contrast in my opinion.

Bosses are puzzle-ish, with lots of waiting for openings. Only played a couple stages due to the tech issues, but the first dude you mostly avoid and get behind him to beat him up while he's glitching, while the second boss you punch one each time he stops so he gets sick for the stun opening. I don't strictly disagree with this sort of gameplay, because it forces you to move and make good decisions. It's a lot less fun than most beat-em ups, though, where you mostly just create your own openings.

End of the day, there's a lot to like, but it's lacking the polish I would need to struggle through the tech issues. Plenty of "yo, that's BS" moments that I would just git gud through, but I'm not gonna fuss with my settings every time I want to start it up.

99 VIDAS is a slow, sluggish and cumbersome, beat 'em up that tries its best to live up to the games that inspire it, but falls on its face almost every step of the way.

This game is pretty fun. It can be a bit of a drag getting caught between two enemies, or an enemy and the wall, and about all of the bosses just break out of combos, but it isn't bad, it is pretty fun.
