Love the story. It is the closest we get to a Red Dawn video game.
I have played the game before and finished it completely, but unfortunately when I bought it here on Steam and wanted to play, I get the message "Pure Virtual Function Call Error" and I cannot continue playing.
Done...
Nice game...

It's an old game but it's fun.
The adventure is worth buying, especially in the sale :)
good
4/5 star
Didn't age well, but I bet it was good 14 years ago.
short and has bugs
Loved the Story to this game, although short the campaign is a fun one to visit once in a while if your trying to kill time.
Only issues / glitches i ran into were related to buggy animations before cut-scenes.
Such a shame it had to compete with Battlefield and Cod.
Aged poorly, Controls are bad, input glyphs display wrong on XB/S controller, aiming mechanics are outlandish. Graphics held up decently, I've got a lot of nostalgia for this game and don't regret jumping back into it after all this time, if it's on discount or you are here for the nostalgia, this is your game.
Surprisingly, multiplayer is still kicking along, as of 17 Feb 2025 there were I believe 6 servers still functioning, with one of those servers having 6 players on it.
It was a different time in 2011. Instead of defending the Burger Town we instead had to defend true AMERICAN iconography. Hooters and White Castle.
great game for its time now its controls are a bit wonky still fun tho
the story line of the game was amazing and the multiplayer is just as fun
Great game, kinda short but the story is good and the missions are great, even giving you different things to do every now and then.
Definitely recommend especially if its on a sale.
:)
1. I played this game through in about like ~4,5h -> thats very sad
2. Graphic is so bad, in 2012 this was maybe good.
3. I do not recommend this game, its a waste of money
4/10 Points
fun
A fun waste of time
Highly recommended. Get it on steam sale for only a couple of dollars. I have zero problems running it on windows 11 on geforce gpu. Multiplayer is generally dead but the single player campaign is one of my all time favorites. It's a bit short, maybe 6 hours, so play it on hard if you want to stretch it out. The plot of Red Dawn, mechanics like early CoD games, Unreal Engine 3. Just an awesome shooter.
different senarios
you can't even play this game on AMD drivers
Homefront is a unique and compelling first-person shooter that offers players an intense alternate history experience with a surprisingly well-crafted narrative. The game's strongest attribute is its powerful storytelling, presenting a dark and immersive vision of a North Korean invasion of the United States that feels both provocative and emotionally engaging. While the single-player campaign is notably short—around three hours—it packs an incredible amount of cinematic storytelling and atmospheric world-building into its brief runtime, with each level feeling like a meticulously crafted painting that captures the brutal reality of occupation.
The gameplay, though familiar, provides solid shooting mechanics and an interesting variety of weapons that become progressively more interesting as players advance through the campaign. Multiplayer stands out as particularly enjoyable, with a team-based scoring system that emphasizes collective performance over individual kill counts, creating a more collaborative and strategic online experience. The game's maps are well-designed, conveying a compelling sense of a crumbling, occupied America that feels both authentic and emotionally charged.
Despite some technical limitations and graphical shortcomings, Homefront manages to create a uniquely immersive shooter experience that goes beyond traditional military game narratives. Its willingness to explore darker themes of war and occupation, combined with its innovative storytelling approach, makes it a memorable—if flawed—entry in the first-person shooter genre.
DO NOT BUY!!
This game should be de-listed from Steam. It will not work anymore. Compatibility mode, installing physx that came with the game, nothing will get this game working.
Unfortunate, because this was one of my guilty pleasure games. XD
Recommended
had the game for like 5 years.
Finally decided to play it and it got bricked by a new windows update. (pointless, probably)
so annoyed.
During the time this game was originally released it got an insane amount of hate for an "absurd and unbelievable story" and for its many controversial scenes in the game ( the Hilary Clinton clip and a lot of defiled corpses and screaming children in the game ) if you can get past the politics of our world and play this game with a different world view than our real one it really does feel kind of original in a "what if" scenario. the game play feels fine and the quality and controls was perfect with no bugs. Cant recommend this title enough for a taste of what fps games were like when they were first getting so hyped. I think the main reason people just couldn't get behind this is because it honestly feels like a small and unexperienced team made it. Yet this was at the time a big game studio that was trying to make a game to compete with growing titles like CoD. This game while slightly short covers almost all the bases for what I would expect of a game it's age and its very replayable with a collectables system if you're into that. for a price of $5 or under its worth the buy!
.
**DO NOT BUY*** **DO NOT BUY*** **DO NOT BUY***
GAME WILL NOT START. IVE HAD THIS GAME FOR YEARS. JUST DID A VERIFY FILES CHECK BECAUSE IT KEPT SHUTTING OFF AFTER A FEW MINUTES, IT SAID "REPAIRED 1 MISSING FILE", NOW THE GAME WONT EVEN START!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
**DO NOT BUY*** **DO NOT BUY*** **DO NOT BUY***
THIS IS WHAT I HAD TO DO TO GET IT TO WORK
-UNINSTALL GAME (preferably use iOBit Uninstaller)
-goto Windows Explorer and search your PC for Homefront and delete everything that comes back.
-Turn off Windows Defender and everything else in there, Real Time protecting, Cloud delivered protection, automatic sample submission...EVERYTHING in there turn it off.
-Reinstall Game
-Disconnect Internet
-Set Steam to Offline Mode.
-Goto Homefront install Directory and run the game .exe from the game directory
Just did a run through on Freedom Fighters and wanted to play the 'spiritual sequel' but guess that's not happening. The game refuses to launch, and no fix I've found online works. If you missed this one when it came out, you didn't miss much, but it was still fun. Can not recommend in 2024 due to instability and clearly no support.
If you happened to experience "Updating Executables" recently as of late 2024-early 2025, there is an explanation:
1. The HOMERFRONT.exe is broken and outdated from Steam and required you to use an unofficial HOMEFRONT.exe from other ways.
2. NVIDIA PhysX Legacy Version won't let you boot the game, because it required you to use and outdated version of PhysX. version of the game (version 9.09.1112), which you need to installed it on the provided "redist" folder.
If somebody said you need to Set the Compatibility to Windows 7/8, they're either bullsh!t or it worked for them. But that is rarely the case. I have set the Compatibility on the .EXE to 7/8 and even lower as of XP but it did not work. So I believe they are BULLSH!T.
Also, because of the broken .EXE, you may need to disabled your Windows Defender, which could cause a security harm in your PC, which I DO NOT RECOMMEND! How do know this? I tested it, which is worked on the provided original .EXE but yeah, they're not safe. So don't do it! Oddly though, when I turn back on the Windows Defender toggle, there is no flag or notification on it. So yeah again, the .EXE is broken!
Now the benefit you get with an unofficial executables the game is playable for a short-while, but it will also crashed the game. 6 times for me every 2 minutes. It's unplayable and it will wreck your save file. Corrupting them even.
Also did I installed the NVIDIA Legacy Software? Like everyone said? Oh yeah! Absolutely! I have. IT STILL F@#KING BROKEN! If anybody says otherwise, F@#K off!
Solutions? I dunno. Maybe Deep Silver will gives a sh!t by patching it. Until then, the game is broken now in the end of 2024-early 2025.
But if you have a console (PS3/Xbox 360/One/Series X|S), go play it there. Maybe use RPCS3 if you're desperate I guess.
2/10
Frustrating!
Trying to play on Guerilla difficulty for the achievement.
The player controls are so clunky its extremely difficult to manouver around the map. The player character runs like a lazy fat kid, so slowly you get shot just trying to run behind cover.
Each level takes hours because you die so easily and have to constantly restart.
There is no HUD, so no idea where enemies are until you die. Even then you cant see who was shooting at you.
I really enjoyed Homefront: The Revolution and completed the game on highest difficulty. But this game is something else. It's difficult, really difficult.
After dying for the fifty seven thousandth time I gave up in frustration.
every time the intro ended I get kicked out of the game luckily I only paid $2 for this game so only a tiny loss but still this problem needs to be fixed as soon as possible before more people buy this game because this problem makes this game look like a scam
no.
I can recommend this game, its really similar like call of duty for this unknown studio this is really fascinating, 2$ is fair price for this game, i didnt played this game before because i never heard for this game before, very interesting gameplay, only sound of weapons is not too great but everything else is very good
for $2 this game is a MUST BUY. Great controller plug and play so you don't have to play from your office/desk. Feels like an infinity ward call of duty campaign with borderlands 2 graphics.
8.5/10
Homefront isn't anything special, and a game that isn't worth writing much about because of that. Even before starting the game, the options menu is incredibly clunky, and half of the options presented to you are unnecessarily worded in very complex terms for simple options in every category, or just simply don't work nor make enough of a change to be worth adjusting in the first place, and I'd even go as far to say that the game would benefit from most of them being reworked or just outright removed altogether.
The campaign is incredibly bland, and there are more than a few factors that play a part in that, one of those being the ever prevalent brown and gray color scheme of the 7th generation, which makes the game feel very plain and doesn't ever bring any importance to the set pieces and larger sections of the game. Another reason for the game not being anything unique is the story, which is your very bog standard "america good, foreign country bad" that has no substance or context to expand beyond the basic premise, even though I can see potential in the idea of a weakened america being crushed under a stronger enemy and having to rise up and gain the strength to fight back, but sadly they don't do anything with that concept, and the characters aren't special either, they don't have much going for them, outside of some very racial-esque quips about Korean people, which is more awkward than it's supposed to be funny or cool, and it's often incredibly noticeable because it's one of the few pieces of dialogue that isn't swearing and repeated objective reminders. The level to level pacing is incredibly slow, due to not being allowed to do anything or proceed until my squad was right next to me, which quickly became frustrating when I could see and be touching the objective itself but have to wait because my squad isn't there yet when I was in nearly half the time, even more so when in combat where I need to move up to another position, but I can't because I need to follow my squadmate and get them to move by standing right next to them during combat, which often can end up in dying and restarting to my last checkpoint, gunplay is okay and does it's job but nothing exceptional and movement is rough and be a slog at points especially during timed events which require you to be sprinting or to catch up to something. These elements come together to make the game incredibly tiring to get through, and may even make some people drop the game altogether depending on how patient one might be while playing this game.
I can't say that someone should buy this game, even on sale, because everything that the game does is more often than not, done better in other games, even in it's competitors that released in the same generation that this game tries so hard to rival, but fails spectacularly to do so, and should just be left to be remembered for the game we may have thought it was and not what it is, because it wasn't fun, and it definitely isn't pretty.
Great game. I loved the multiplayer on ps3 back in the days. It plays well on the Deck but requires some tweaking in the settings.
Very short campaign, just 3 hours. Took a lot of troubleshooting to even get the game started and almost gave up at some point. The campaign is nothing crazy, just like old COD games except it is set in the world 2024 and the world is semi-modern but with some sci-fi AI machines here and there.
It's a fun game to play through but don't except a whole lot, it is full of cringy and predictable lines and action, but still fun. Don't buy unless heavily discounted. Multiplayer is dead.
Had fun, Dead Koreans, inner child happy, campaign was too short (3 hours) so only buy the game when it's on sale.
Really liked this game. Had a cool campaign and multiplayer was fun.
Sadly, it didn't last long online.
Game is fun. Downvote because of infinite "updating executables" so it can't launch. Apparently there are work arounds but all the ones I've tried haven't worked.
I wish this actually happened
If you are a fan of COD or the spin-off game to this one, then I definitely recommend this game to you! It is a wonderful concept with a couple sizable flaws. Its hard not to see but the game itself is fun enough to get past the lower than standard graphics once you get into the story. The biggest problem this game always had was that its campaign was so short. If you can get it for cheap, go for it!
this game is fast paced and has a great story line
♥
Homefront is a breath of fresh air in the first-person shooter genre. Its innovative mechanics, combined with a gripping narrative and top-notch graphics, create an unforgettable gaming experience. It’s a testament to what independent developers can achieve and a serious challenge to AAA titles like Call of Duty.
dead multiplayer, mid campaign
Campaign took only 3 hours to beat and was kind of a slog but it was worth it for the bad-ass battle of San Francisco finale
I understand how old games can be clunky to play with modern hardware, but if it doesn't launch without some assistance of the community it's unacceptable. I enjoyed the game (before trying to beat it on the hardest difficulty getting past the church, which was hell) and after awhile I wanted to revisit it for the multiplayer since I barely touched it.
Still as good as the day i first played it. wish the MP was still good tho
