Y'all I am FIENDING for the next part of this story because God DAMN is it great- I absolutely love the characters and the writing and UGH THIS IS SO FUN
I can't recommend this game enough. I've been enraptured with the idea of COG games for months now, and I've tried quite a few, but none of them have enraptured me like this one. The detail in the choices, the possible plot strands and the dialogue is the best I've ever seen in these games.
The character creation is stellar, and allows for so many good roleplaying opportunities. Want to be a famous actor? You can. Want to be a hacker? You can. Want to be just an average joe, working a 9-5? You can. Want to be a teenager? You can. Want to be a teenager, who's crazy, allergic to pollen, claustrophobic, has a pet chihuahua and has to look after their kid cousin? You can.
I'm almost completely sure you can make the character you'd envision yourself being in the apocalypse, or a cool character you'd enjoy playing.
Beyond the character creation are your choices. Who would you be? Are you a good guy, a Lee Everett type trying to keep his group together as all hell breaks loose? Are you a complete psycho who kills people for no reason and terrorises your own group? Are you a lecherous weirdo who tries to flirt with everybody they meet? Are you just kind of a loser? There are always a multitude of dialogue options and choices to make with people, and I (usually) felt like I could properly act the way I think my character would in any given moment.
Speaking of characters, they're pretty damn great for the most part. The cast is colourful, and without giving too much away, there are plenty of moments to build your relationship with them, and you'll want to as they're pretty much all unique and fun to engage with. They feel human and flawed, in an engaging way. They can over-react, they can make mistakes and lapses in judgement, but it feels realistic and warranted. I don't want to discuss the characters too much in the review, because I think they're such a fun part of the game and I'd love for you to experience them for yourself.
This game is so much more a "game" than most of the COG games I've played, as well. There's crafting, resource management, time management. Minor elements of base building at points, it feels so much more dynamic than any of the other COG games I've personally tried. Your character's skill (or lackthereof) is so important to all of this, and really adds to the game's immense replay value.
My only gripes are relatively small. I think the character of Jaime is fun, but he's a little too overpowered, bordering on Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu levels. Perhaps that's a little too far, but he's 6'10, built like a brick shithouse, hot, pretty skilled at most things, and can't ever leave the party for any reason. That being said, he's still a cool character and very likeable, but he might be a little too cool, especially because the other characters are much more reasonable in terms of their capabilities.
Speaking of characters, I found that the relevance and dialogue with determinant characters falls off of a cliff in Chapter 2 onward. There's quite a few people that can join your group in Part 1 that don't have a lot to say later on. They don't disappear, but at least from my point of view, they got a lot less relevant. Perhaps a few extra scenes with them wouldn't be such a bad thing. That being said, there are so many characters in the game that I can understand why Jim Dattilo decided to focus on the characters that stick around no matter what.
Speaking of, I found there was still a bit of rail-roading, in spite of the freedom the game gives you for the most part. For example, the twins Madison and Brody. Don't get me wrong, I love Madison and Brody (and my teen MC really loves Madison), but you can't abandon them when they show up, despite there being a dialogue option where you can basically tell them to go die. I think that it'd be very interesting to have the option to have a minimum viable team, like literally just you and Brody, or even just you. How would certain scenes in Part 3 have played out if Brody and Madison weren't in the team (or dead, heaven forfend). Again, I can understand that adding options like this would even further bloat the dev/writing time, and Jim Dattilo is one man and not Larian Studios, but it's still something worth thinking about.
Anyway, with all that yapping out of the way, I'd still consider this the singular best game of it's type, and *absolutely* worth the money for the amount of potential fun you'll get out of it. You will get hours upon hours of fun out this, and it's criminally cheap. Please give this a look, you won't regret it.
I recommend this game if you enjoy other products from Hosted Games, or just enjoy having your choices affect the story. The amount of time you get out of this game is worth every penny. 10/10
Cant wait for more updates in the future.
